After being turned into a shadow-wielding, bloodthirsty Daemon in 1649 by Lilith, Xander moves through his dark, immortal life with new meaning. As the first Lamia on earth, he must lead the Courts of Daemonium to maintain the balance between mortals and Daemons. More importantly, he must ensure he remains in control of his own mind to prevent Lilith from taking over again. Those around him are not safe, he can never allow anyone too close. Yet in 1882, his entire world shifts in the most unexpected of ways…
Adriana is an inexperienced Luciferus Incantrix who will take her great-grandmother’s seat in the Courts. Her light-summoning power is the strongest hope they have in the fight against Lilith, but she is burdened by self-doubt and unable to bring forth the magic they need—until she meets him.
With Xander’s guidance and antagonising antics, Adriana must use her emotions to strengthen her magic. But can she live up to such high expectations? Will she be the saviour they need? Or will the pressure and her conflicted feelings for Xander be her downfall… and his?
Her light has the ability to cut through his darkness, to shine through his despair. And she has the power to destroy every ounce of his control.
Lord of Shadow and Blood is the first book in the dark fantasy series, The Courts of Daemonium, and is intended for mature audiences. Please check trigger warnings before proceeding
I fear my heart is lost in the Lord of Blood & Shadows !
So let me explain. From the start of book you step into a time capsular, war, despair, fear … pure chaos of man. Alexander Duran has been fighting for his LIFE ! He’s the kind of man that put responsibility above happiness, his family above his selfish needs. He succumbed to the voice disguised a salvation. Only to damn himself and his brother to life as a Lamia.
Adriana ! A woman so tender with the heart of a thousand lions.I just love how even in the face of adversity she will speak up EVERY-TIME. I cried when Adriana cried, I laughed when Adriana laughed. And I felt physical and emotional pain when Adriana begged for “no more”
And this is only book 1
Striga is hilariously delightful. A great grand mother we can all relate to.
Nicolia, a great sense of humour, however touch what is his and die
…. Fight me later but I’m starting to think Norman is just a misunderstood man.
Im soo in love with this book not just for the romance but there wasn’t a single moment I felt like I was disconnected. The plot of this story has you asking question and checking the corner of your room for unnatural shadows. I WAS LOST every step of the way. As the plot evolves there is so much information to take in from characters, back door deals and time period caricature. Remember this is only book 1 !
“Lord of Shadow and Blood” is the debut novel from Lucy May Smith, and the first book of “The Courts of Daemonium” series. And what a debut it is!
Smith’s intricate lore and world building makes for an in-depth read, one that’s captivating and evocative, with rich and multifaceted characters that deal with real trauma and mental health issues, alongside the fantastical challenges they face. Yes, this version of our world is steeped in mythology and the supernatural, but thanks to these developed and interesting characters, it’s still hugely relatable.
What also makes it relatable is the social and political commentary that is purposely reflective of the troubles of the world today, using the ever-successful trope of a rebellion of outcasts against a tyrannical leader/political leadership. However, it’s Smith’s fearless and unapologetic ability to go to extra mile into dark places that not only subverts expectations, but flat out flips the table, scattering them across the floor.
Smith’s use of prose is noteworthy, too. Inspired by classic authors such as Hardy, Brontë, and Stoker, her language is elevated, but without being obnoxious, and flows like poetry. She doesn’t patronise her audience, nor does she alienate; she writes with the perfect balance of someone educated, passionate, and astute in her craft.
Not just the classics, Smith is also knowledgeable in various mythological concepts and lore, evolving and weaving them together into something unique and complex; this book being only the tip of the iceberg of the overall series plot (as well as several novellas – the first of which, “Tales of Daemonium: Volume One” is out on 14th February 2026 - see my ARC review). As her editor*, let me assure you, this is just the beginning.
But don’t worry, there’s a healthy dose of romance, humour, and wholesomeness in amongst the fighting, and battles, and politics. Our lovable, headstrong FMC, Adriana, and infuriating yet charming MMC, Xander (a new Shadow Daddy Book Boyfriend for you all, say thank ya 🙏), lay the groundwork for gleeful kicking of feet, swooning, giggling at 2am when you know you have a 9am meeting, and some delectable scenes that create quite a storm (barn scene, I’m looking at you 👀).
It is impossible to not be enraptured by these two characters but their romance, whilst a through line in the book, is not the main focus overall, and is also not all what these two are about. They have histories independent of each other, distinct personalities, flaws, highs and lows, growth and incredibly strong arcs. Their story isn’t just about love and sex, cute banter and chemistry; they have agendas and desires beyond each other, with deeper, individual narratives that would still stand if the romance were to be removed. Smith understands how to make characters nuanced and fully developed, whilst also providing all the things we want in a Romantasy – enemies-to-lovers, “touch her and die” vibes, spice, emotional highs, dreams and hope and… and then she’ll flay every good feeling from you, discarding them in bloody shreds, and leaving you to wonder what the f— just happened.
Do not expect this to be your standard Fantasy Romance/Romantasy. Do not think you can predict how Smith will weave this tale or future ones. You cannot.
I am continually astounded by the depth of knowledge, consideration, and imagination in Smith’s writing. Follow her, follow her books - she will astound you, too.
*Whilst I am her editor, I wish to assure you this review is unbiased and honest. I was introduced to her work by a mutual friend and was instantly blown away – before she even came on as a client. Lucy is genuinely an excellent storyteller and I’m grateful for our partnership every day.
This book?? Dark, seductive, and completely addictive. I was hooked from the first page and did NOT recover 😮🔥
Immortal daemon courts, shadow magic, and a MMC who is constantly fighting to keep the darkness from consuming him?? Yeah… this hit EVERYTHING I love.
Xander is that morally grey, powerful, slightly unhinged energy I will always fall for. The internal battle he’s fighting—trying to hold onto control while something darker threatens to take over?? It adds so much intensity to every single moment.
And then there’s Adriana—light against his shadow. The contrast between them?? Perfect. She’s powerful but uncertain, and watching her grow into that power while being pulled deeper into Xander’s world was so satisfying.
The tension between them?? Unreal. The push and pull of light vs. darkness, control vs. desire, power vs. vulnerability… it’s constant and it HURTS in the best way 🔥
And the world-building?? Rich, layered, and darkly atmospheric. Courts, politics, ancient power, and a looming threat that keeps the stakes high the entire time.
✨ Read this if you love: 🖤 dark fantasy romance 🔥 morally grey, powerful MMCs ✨ light x darkness dynamics 👀 tension-filled, slow-burn connection ⚔️ immortal beings, courts, and high stakes
This one is intense, emotional, and completely consuming—I’m already obsessed with this world 🖤
Lord of Shadow and Blood is a dark, dystopian fantasy packed with political intrigue, a fresh take on Daemons (witches, vampires, wolves) and a magic system born from tragic origins. Unfortunately for the characters, the tragedy doesn't stop there. Nowhere close!!
The story starts off as a period piece and by the end of part one, you take a disparaging tumble into present day. The AGONY I felt for Adriana and Xander.. Their love story is fated to be tragic and I can only hope that they find the solid ground their relationship needs in the end.
But in the meantime….gimme all the drama, civil unrest, war, angry Gods, alliances, betrayals and emotional damage 😈😈
“I cannot decide if you are my salvation or my torment. Here you stand, the beacon in my darkness, the sun that warms my frozen life. With every look, every touch, you are the harbinger of my downfall. You have the potential to ruin my control of everything that I am, everything I have tried to hide.”
P.s. I signed up for the Shadow Daddy MMC with an infuriating mouth and fell in love with the badass, tortured soul of the FMC. After everything she endures, she holds on to her humanity, protecting the vulnerable and somehow till possesses the ability to love and be loved. I will say no more so I don’t spoil anything.
I also love that Adriana is just as (and eventually MORE) powerful than the dark & dangerous, feared-by-all, first vampire in existence—Xander.
Make sure when you inevitably throw your kindle, you aim for something soft! Happy reading! 🥲
4.5 ⭐️ rounded up to 5! 🌶️🌶️
LoSaB is the first book in a NA dark romantasy trilogy! I'm so honored to have received an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own and freely given.
If you love vampires, dual timelines, and beautifully written emotional trauma, this is the book you need in your life. I’m rereading it right now after devouring it last year, and it is DEVASTATINGLY good 🧛 the kind of story that lingers long after you finish the last page.
Prepare to fall in love, break a little, and lose sleep because you won’t want to put it down. Go support my friend and grab your copy! 🖤📖✨
This book...it has torn my heart out and left it in pieces in the BEST way. I admit, while reading part 1 I was a little nervous that it was leaning toward instalove, but the more I read, the more I realized that Lucy had something up her sleeve and unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it!) I was right. By the end of Part 1, I was left staring at the ceiling and devoured the rest of the book so quickly. Lucy's writing will hook you instantly, like a Lure, and keep you in its thrall til the last page, when you end up desperate for book 2 (like me!).
Tropes 🥀 Friends to lovers to enemies 🩸Betrayals 🥀Alliances 🩸Daemons x Witches x Werewolves 🥀Multiple POV’s 🩸Magic 🥀Shadow wielder
Lord of Shadow and Blood is not got the weak hearted. This book seeps tragedy and the author has you seconding guessing characters motives throughout. I’d like me you enjoyed the scenes of Stefans blood rage from The Vampire Diaries, then look no further. There is plenty of blood lust and rage that makes his antics seem unworthy.
Lucy has created a world where pain, suffering and hope all collide together and you are praying these characters make it out alive or at least in one piece.
(When you get to chapter 14, you will know) 👀
I absolutely adored the multiple POV’s and how the story is set across multiple timelines to get a full picture of how the story is unfolding.
By the end of this, I wasn’t sure I loved or hated characters! Who do I send my bill for emotional damage too??
This book ended with a cliffhanger that had me screaming at ungodly hours in the morning “Haven’t they been through enough”
I’m looking forward to seeing how the author takes the story in the next book! Lilith is not my friend, I despise this character with all my being!
📖 Review – Lord of Shadow and Blood ✍️ Author: Lucy May Smith 🌍 Genre: Dark Fantasy Romance • New Adult 💡 Tropes: shadow wielder x light bringer, immortal MMC, tragic past lovers, reincarnation/reunion, enemies-to-lovers energy, forbidden power, fate vs choice, morally grey hero, touch her and die (but make it tortured), trauma-bound connection, slow burn with explosive payoff ⸻
Lord of Shadow and Blood isn’t just about darkness. It’s about what happens when darkness learns to feel… and refuses to let go. It’s about power that corrupts.Love that survives it. And the devastating truth that sometimes… the person who destroys you is the same one who would burn the world to save you. Xander isn’t a hero. He was never meant to be. He was created to kill. To consume. To obey. A weapon forged by Lilith and unleashed on the world without mercy. And for a moment…he liked it. That’s what makes him dangerous. Not the shadows. Not the power. But the fact that he remembers what it felt like to enjoy the darkness and hates himself for it. So he builds control. He builds rules. He builds an entire world around the idea that he will never lose himself again. Until her. Adriana is light. But not the soft kind. She’s wild. Untamed. Still learning what she is and what she could become. She doesn’t fit into the world she was born into. She doesn’t follow expectations. And she doesn’t fear monsters. Not even him. Especially not him. ⸻
What starts as curiosity becomes something far more dangerous. Because this isn’t just attraction. It’s recognition. The kind that feels like memory. Like something unfinished. Like two forces that were never meant to meet again… finding each other anyway. Their connection isn’t gentle. It’s unstable. Volatile. Built on tension that never fully settles. Every interaction feels like standing too close to a flame. Every glance lingers just a second too long. Every moment carries the quiet threat of losing control. And Xander? He doesn’t fall. He restrains. He distances. He fights himself harder than he fights anyone else. Because wanting her isn’t just dangerous for him. It’s deadly for her. ⸻
This isn’t just a love story. It’s about guilt that never fades. About choices that can’t be undone. About the unbearable weight of loving someone you once destroyed. Because their story isn’t beginning. It’s continuing. And it carries blood with it. ⸻
🔹 What I loved: • Xander — dark, controlled, terrifying… but deeply human underneath • The internal conflict — constant, raw, and incredibly well written • Adriana — strong without being untouchable, emotional without being weak • The dynamic — light vs shadow, control vs instinct, restraint vs desire • The tension — not just romantic, but psychological • The world-building — rich, layered, and morally complex • The trauma element — it adds depth, not just drama • Protective Xander? Absolutely devastating once it hits
🔸 What could’ve been stronger: • The pacing between timelines can feel slightly abrupt at times • Some emotional transitions could’ve been explored even deeper • Certain side conflicts (political/world stakes) could’ve had more buildup • A few moments deserved to breathe longer before moving forward ⸻
💡 Perfect for readers who love: • Morally grey, tortured MMCs who fight themselves more than anyone else • Shadow powers + dark magic aesthetics • Light x dark dynamics with real emotional weight • Romance built on history, pain, and unfinished connection • Slow burn that turns intense rather than soft • Stories where love doesn’t fix everything—but still matters • That moment when control finally breaks
Perfect if you want something dark, emotional, and quietly consuming. ⸻
📌 Verdict: A haunting dark fantasy where power is a curse, love is a risk, and redemption isn’t guaranteed. A man made of shadows who refuses to become a monster. A girl made of light who refuses to fear him. And a story that proves… sometimes the most dangerous thing isn’t darkness. It’s feeling.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 — for atmosphere, emotional depth, morally grey perfection, and a Xander who doesn’t just protect… he fights himself for her.
🖤 Lord of Shadow and Blood is about the moment a monster chooses not to be one… and the woman who sees him anyway
You may be wondering why I'm reading a dark fantasy book in the lead up to Christmas. Well, friends, while this isn't my usual "Christmassy romance" that I read during the festive season, the romance in this book is one of the best I have read this year.
While not quite "insta-love" (ew), I adored how Adriana and Xander were instantly drawn to each other and their love just continued to grow the more that they bickered and bantered with each other. Xander knew just how to get under Adriana's skin immediately, in his own playful way, and equally she worked out how to get Xander to put down his guard. Xander's backstory is particularly tragic, and I understood why he had walls up and why it was hard for him to let someone get close to him, but it was beautiful to watch him suddenly become like a giddy teenager in love (despite being a centuries-old vampire).
I use the term 'vampire', but the terminology in this book is different from your usual fantasy terms (such as 'vampire' 'witch' and 'werewolf'). It's very important to read the glossary at the beginning, because there are many different species of daemon and even within species they have different powers and that means they have different titles. It did get a bit confusing for me at times and I had to keep referring back to the glossary, as the lore is very detailed. Also there are a lot of side characters to keep track of outside of Xander and Adriana's romance.
Lucy May Smith's writing style is exquisite, particularly the way she details the emotions of the main characters. And the quotes that Xander speaks - wow. All other declarations of love from MMCs pale in comparison. Also I am a big fan of how this is primarily set in the 1800s, and the author obviously did her history homework to get the details on society spot on. Adriana was my favourite character, with her feistiness and little care for being seen as a "proper lady of society".
If you are looking for a dark fantasy with detailed original lore, that will give you a rollercoaster of emotions and leave you wanting more - give this one a try!
I love jumping into a book blind so I didn't even read the blurb, loved the cover and the title. Met Lucy at a book pop up event and knew that LoSaB was going to be my next read.
Paranormal, romantasy with dual POV. Lucys world building and depth of characters, grabs you and pulls you into her realm of magic. She writes exquisitely, with a poetic easy flow.
The MMC - Xander (my new Shadow Daddy) Fell in love with him from the beginning. Dark, brooding, control issues with a 'touch her and die' vibe and a 'put right the wrongs' morals. Then the fact that he has 'brothers' who you slowly get to know (I'm hoping book 2 gives us more depth and storyline for a few of them)
THE FMC - Adriana, vulnerable, self doubting, emotional - in a good way and super stubborn. Grows into a strong woman after trauma and loss shape her story. You want her to have her HEA.
A spice level 🌶🌶 (I do read heavy dark romance) that kept the fire burning for the reader and didn't ever feel like it was just thrown in as an extra. Tension and build up prior to the barn the was perfect and the scenes were delish to read.
Filled with - Family, friendship, love & fight for whats right, protect those you love balanced with Pain, loss, heartbreak, politics and traitors.
The end of Part 1 was 'gut wrenching, soul shattering'. Left me internally screaming NO and OMG! I had to take a breather and let my heart rate recover. Once time out turned into a need to know what was to come next, I just couldn't read the following pages of Part 2 fast enough! Then you get hit with a Plot twist bigger than the Twister movie! Prepare yourselves for the excitement and curiosity that Part 2 provides.
Be warned this is a cliffhanger ending that leaves you needing book 2!
Sit down, open the pages and jump into a world that will take you through a portal that you will not want to leave.
I first want to say (again) how proud I am of my girl Lucy for getting her first book published! I fell in love with LOSAB a long time ago when she first told me about it and I beta read for her. Now, I have fallen in love with her book all over again.
This is absolutely not your usual love story. It's heartbreaking and tragic yet so beautiful. Adriana and Xander are both troubled people, dealing with their own burdens and inner demons but their love is powerful, so much so that they hold the power to destroy each other. I loved how their relationship grew, the way they were drawn to each other in a way they couldn't understand (the way Xander yearns… oof) until they could no longer ignore it. The way Xander got under her skin to give her something to fight when she felt weak. I loved their banter at times, seeing a lighter side to both of them. However, don't let the love story fool you. This book is dark and twisted, combining magic. politics, war, and bloodshed.
Lucy's writing is absolutely amazing. The way their emotions are written is so raw and real and at times, it will absolutely gut you. You'll swoon, you'll cry, you'll laugh, you may even want to hate the characters at times. The world building is top notch, creating an intricate magic system without it being too overwhelming (in my opinion but there's a glossary to help) and realistic characters that are not always perfect. I cannot say enough good things about this book, it is always going to be a favorite of mine. Forever. Xander Duran is going to be your new favorite morally gray shadow daddy (need I say more?), mark my words.
Lord of Shadow and Blood is OUT NOW so treat yourself 😉
Xander is the world’s first Lamia, a vampire with shadow magic, who was created after an unfortunate encounter with Lilith. Xander knows that he is not a good man, but when he meets Adriana, an Incantrix with elemental powers and light magic, neither of them can stay away from each other for long.
This is absolutely not your typical romantasy, and it will leave you reeling and questioning everything you thought you knew about love and the lengths you’d be willing to go. The trauma is real.
Xander is written beautifully; he’s a complicated character with a past he’s not proud of, and it takes him a long time to come to terms with the fact that he could possibly be happy. Adriana is so full of light (literally and figuratively!) and totally rejects the notion of being a typical lady. She starts out so strong and determined, but in the end struggles to come to terms with who she really is. Their situation is so unique and you can totally understand why it is so difficult for them to overcome their struggles.
Xander and Adriana’s relationship is just one facet of this story, and it is interspersed with a centuries-long war with Lilith and her children, bringing chaos to the world, and it holds a mirror up to the injustices and xenophobia that we see in our world today.
Lucy has built an incredible world and you should all read it now!!
Xander is a centuries old shadow wielding nightmare with control issues and a mouth that should be illegal. Adriana is light, fire, defiance, and absolutely not interested in being quiet or obedient. Put them in the same room and it is pure tension. Not insta love. Real pull. The kind that grows sharper every time they argue, circle each other, or refuse to admit what is obvious.
Watching Xander unravel was DELICIOUS. Watching Adriana step into her power was even better. She does not soften him by shrinking. She meets him head on. And the fact that she can stand toe to toe with the first vampire in existence made me feral.
The lore is dense and unapologetic. Dark gods. Political chaos. Blood. History. Betrayal. You do have to pay attention. And honestly I loved that. This book does not hold your hand. It dares you to keep up.
HAWT AF!
Also the writing. The emotion. The lines Xander delivers should be framed and banned from public consumption because no man fictional or otherwise has the right.
This is tragic. This is romantic. This is messy. This is powerful. This is a shadow daddy book that actually delivers.
Read it. Scream quietly. Throw your Kindle somewhere soft. Thank you GEMMA BABY for suggesting I read this arc and THANK YOU LUCY! ONTO THE SECOND!
3.5⭐️ (rounded up to 4 for Goodreads because I devoured this in a single day) This book and its plot is very well thought out. It’s gothic fantasy at its finest. It’s got angst and it’s got spice.
What it didn’t have was an MMC I’ve never seen before😬
A dark haired, golden brown skinned, shadow wielding, mind reading, mind speaking, very powerful, Lord of *insert land(or shadows) here*, tortured and has guilt for everyone’s problems because he blames himself for them. Called Xaden - no sorry, Xander.
Other than the MMC basically being a replica, this book had a fantastic premise. A completely new magic system, a curveball that came out of nowhere, and it dealt with a lot of politics, never a bad thing to have real subjects dealt with in books but REAL WORLD POLITICS? ….. it’s fine! I can deal with some real world politics but seeing “Manchester” and “UK parliament” in a fantasy book just brought me straight out of the magic.
I could also see the pieces of tv and literature that heavily inspired this book but does any of my review mean I didn’t love it? Absolutely not. I consumed this book within 10 hours of on/off reading. I will recommend it to literally everyone I know.
Oh, and the FMC is a lightning wielder too?😬
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
If you are looking for a lush and immersive world to get lost in, this is your book. It may feel a bit dense at the start—like many fantasy stories with deep worldbuilding—but the payoff is totally worth it.
In this book you’ll find:
🥀 Twisted romance 🩸 Immortals among us 😈 Vampires, witches, and werewolves (with a twist) ✨ Political intrigue 🔥 High stakes
Lucy May Smith takes figures from biblical tales and folklore and makes them entirely her own. The worldbuilding is original, with its own set of supreme gods. The characters aren’t cardboard tropes, but complex people with trauma, emotional depth, and contradictions (okay, they’re immortal—but you get it).
This book made me reflect on many topics: discrimination, the absurdity of war, misogyny, the state of our world today, and more. But the theme that stood out most to me is how, sometimes, the real enemy lives in our own minds—the poison of our own thoughts and emotions.
I highly recommend this book, and I can’t wait for Book 2.
The scariest part? This is a debut. The baseline is already insane, and I know this talented author will only get better.
Lucy's writing is beautiful and detailed and shows such great promise for an epic storytelling future. I can't believe this is her debut novel! She is also one of the loveliest authors I have met recently at book events.
I love her ability to submerge you completely into her complex and multi-layered story and lore. It is well thought out, with details that put you directly into the mindset of the characters and must have taken so much thought to lay out plot wise. Huge applause for that, as I know how complicated a process that is. It has tragedy, dystopian darkness, tortured souls, possession, emotional damage and betrayal, blood lust rampage and danger. If you aren't triggered by any of that, then this is definitely a great fit for you.
The only thing I was missing was a MMC I could root for and even though it's dark fantasy and doesn't pitch itself as a romance... I still really wanted Xander to be less 'blood-lust crazed under the influence of a certain [spoiler free] darkness' and more someone who I could like. But maybe it was always destined to be tragic. So that's what readers will need to find out next!
There are some really s3xy scenes that will get your own blood racing and I think they were well placed to lighten some of the brutal twists. For a debut novel, I think this is an incredible feat and one that must have taken many late nights to achieve and I applaud her effort and creation. I also love the whole packaging surrounding the book and the beautiful cover, too.
The main characters are of course, magic-wielding beings in love. One of them is a vampire. So this book contains plenty of blood and sex, because if you're looking for a title like this--no judgement--that's what you're hoping for.
But, you're going to get so much more. Underneath the genre fanservice (which itself is well-written and satisfyingly spicy and violent,) you'll find an engaging and well thought-out story: a parable about justice, oppression, and broken people trying to make it in a broken world.
The worldbuilding in this novel is fascinating. Covering more than a century of the main characters' supernatural lifespans, it showcases a changing world as people and politics adjust to the immortals living among them.
Our heroes suffer as they pursue (and avoid) love. It shows how good people can make horrible choices, then how to move on, picking up the broken pieces. Well done, and I look forward to the next installment!
This was a roller coaster. Certain parts I was like YES! (The beginning was great) then it got kind of ehhh for me (I’m not a huge fan of insta-attraction: love and this kind of felt like that?) and it slowed down. Like okay, we live happily ever after…maybe I’ll DNF and come back later.
BOOM. 50 percent ish rolls in and I’m like WHAAAAAT?! I actually had to go back and read a few chapters again because I thought I missed something. Seriously did that happen???? My JAW DROPPED. WOZZA WOZZA WOZZA.
It picked up speed and then some. I was so invested in the damn time skip and everything that happened and then we get a somewhat resolution? I WANTED MORE ANGST. I WANTED MORE GROVELING.
The whole setup of the book was interesting. The magical system was different and I really appreciated the blend of some of my favorite books I could semi see in this. I cannot wait to see where this goes.
Huge nod to a glossary at the start of this book - which details the magic weilders and their powers etc. Think this is absolutely ESSENTIAL!! 👌👌👌
I was sucked right in about ch3 and became totally invested early on!! Both Xander and Adriana were extremely complex characters in their own right and working through a LOT.
The plot line was fantastic, and the book was fast-paced with political intrigue, mental health and anxiety issues. But I really enjoyed the dynamics between 'Lupus' - werewolf shifter, 'Incantrix' - Witches and Humans!!
Once I got the end of Part 1 I died a little inside and had a literal WHAT THE HELL?!?!? Noooo!!! moment. But no spoilers here 🫶
Can not WAIT for the rest of this series to be written 😍😍😍 I neeeeeeed them!
By the end of chapter 3 I was hooked. At the end of chapter 14/Part 1 I WAS PANICKING. My heart has never beat harder. I was in shock trying to compose myself. THE AGONY I felt deep in my bones. This book made me FEEL and I absolutely love that. I had no clue what was coming and the plot was like nothing I have read before. ALSO. 🚨NEW SHADOW DADDY ALERT🚨 need I say more??!!!!!!!
Lord of Shadow and Blood is a NA Dark Dystopian Fantasy with Vampires, Witches, and Magic Mythology. It starts off as period piece and then ends up in the present time (which is where the rest of the series takes place) which is such a cool concept.
I CAN NOT WAIT FOR YALL TO READ THIS. I have nothing but good things to say about this book/master piece.
Lucy has created an intricate world of magic, daemons, and mythology that is immersive, compelling, and will keep you begging for more.
Xander and Adriana's tragic love story had my heart in a vice and me gasping out loud. I was conflicted every step of the way between wanting them to get a happily ever after and wanting them as far apart from each other as possible. It was an all-out war of my heart.
The characters are beautifully nuanced and flawed. Even the side characters are lovable and make me want more of their stories.
I cannot wait for the next book. It ends on a cliffhanger that lets you know the stakes are about to be raised!
A beautiful debut by a talented author. I am excited to see what she does next!
have i left my vampire phase? no. bc it’s not a phase. it’s a lifestyle.
Lord of Shadows and Blood is a dark romantasy where the only thing that is faster than the speed of the plot moving along is Addie and Xander’s relationship.
lemme tell you: Xander pisses me off so much and gives me emotional whiplash. he thinks Addie is the immature one when one moment his thoughts are how beautiful Addie is and getting rid of people who touch her. and the next? they’re in a screaming match because he can’t handle what he feels for her. Adriana’s no better.
but man do i love it. the will they/won’t they? the “i hate your guts” to intense kiss? tt gets me every time.
AND THAT’S JUST PART ONE.
so thank you, Lucy May Smith for writing characters that make me SO ANGRY. i love them.
I rated it 4 & 1/2 stars Lord of Shadow and Blood si not your typical romantasy. It is dark, sexy and full of epic twists that will leave your head reeling and your heart hurting.
Adriana and Xander are two very complex, damaged characters who's story is tragically brilliant. I absolutely adore each of their characters, and just want to wrap them both up in cotton wool and hug them.
I loved the two different vibes from part 1 and 2, finding it made the story even more interesting. Part 2 was a whirlwind of drama and chaos and I loved every second.
The ending has left me SO nervous for these characters and for what will happen next. Lucy definitely has me in a chokehold and I cannot wait for the rest of the tale to unfold.
The start of the book began as a backstory would and left me in a complete whirlwind once I got to part 2 of the book. This being in a good way. I think that the emotional and tough subject matters of not believing in yourself and the feelings of guilt are ripe within all the characters for one reason or another and are represented very well. There is plenty of lusty, spicy moments to bring the mood up from a devasting story when it is needed most. Probably this is one of the only books I can say made feel something lately and is an enjoyable read all round for those looking for something emotionally destroying and dark. I can't wait to read book 2 when it is released!
Absolutely fantastic debut from the beautiful Lucy Smith, I am extremely honoured to have been able to ARC read this beauty (even if I am a bit late finishing, I do apologise🫣) and I need the next book now! I absolutely love the characters, this is definitely not your usual love story and with the slow burn🥵 I absolutely loved Adrianna & Xander's relationship, how they are both troubled people but their love is powerful! Near to the end I was getting real angry at Norman & that stupid Lucas Rook & then bloody Caligo comes back like wtf?! Lucy please give me the second book ASAP, this is living rent free in my head for a long time😍🖤
Thank you Lucy Smith for allowing me to read an ARC of ‘Lord of Shadow and Blood’.
Packed full of political intrigue and steeped in lore, this dark fantasy book isn’t one to miss! Follow Adriana and Xander on their quest to defeat Lilith and stop the incoming war between Daemons and mortals. All while trying to navigate their own complex love story. The narrative spans multiple centuries and deals with themes of tragedy, betrayal, magic, love, and loss. It’s hard-hitting, and really packs a punch. Thank you for making me fall in love with these characters, then breaking my heart. Bravo.
‘Lord of Shadow and Blood’ is the first book in a main ‘Courts of Daemonium’ triology, with further novellas planned… and I for one can’t wait to read more!
This was an awesome vampire tale… with honestly just about everything you could imagine… vampires with elemental abilities, lupus’ , elemental, foresight incantatrices!
This has a great romance plot in the story but however the main plot had me hooked! Xander and Adriana have the most brutal story you will be swooning over and the spicy scenes… 👀🤨
It’s full of mayhem and the ending lines this perfectly up for the next book!! Loved it
my first real dip into fantasy with so much lore! it's dark and beautiful and oh lord (hehe) does it have some tastyyyy moments. I love the different timelines and all the feelings of love and loss that keeps you guessing until it doesn't! This is only the first and it's highly recommended if you love a complex story!
One of those novels you can't put down once you have started. Kept my interest from the first page, brilliant character creation and storyline. Would definitely recommend Lord Of Shadow And Blood, it is a must read for fantasy lovers.
