Milow can’t speak. Her father took her voice before she ever had a chance to use it, leaving her trapped in silence and haunted by memories no one should ever endure. Every day is a reminder of what was taken from her, and every moment is a quiet battle to survive the shadows of her past.

When she arrives at a new foster home, Milow expects nothing. Just another place where she doesn’t belong and isn’t loved. But then she meets Ashby, her new foster brother, who has lived through his own hell. Somehow, he sees her, and without words or judgment, he understands her in a way no one else ever has.

Growing up together, their bond deepens into something unbreakable. Ashby becomes her protector and the one constant in her life. They spend years leaning on each other, but childhood doesn’t last forever, and that closeness starts to shift into something more complicated and intense.

As they grow older, the world gets crueler. The bullying Milow has endured her whole life never lets up, and it only becomes heavier. At the same time, the pressure on Ashby keeps building as school and swimming demand more from him.
Milow has to decide how much of herself she can risk in a world that has never treated her gently, while Ashby has to choose what he’s willing to sacrifice to reach his goals.

But after everything, they know one truth: no matter what it costs, they will always choose each other.

CLOSE TO YOU is an epic and emotional coming-of-age novel with a HEA that deals with heavy topics.
This book is not meant for sensitive readers.

AUTHOR'S NOTE
Each book in this series focuses on a different couple and tells their story. All the stories take place during the same time period, so events in one book may overlap with those in another. You will encounter familiar situations, locations, or characters from the other books, but from the couple's perspective featured in the current story. Because the books share the same timeline and interconnect in this way, they are meant to be read in order (or, in the future, as tandem reads) and cannot be fully understood as standalone stories. Together, the books form a continuous, interconnected series.

That said... Milow and Ashby will get at least 1 more book!

A NOTE FROM NISSA

The Through the Years series will have multiple interconnected books, with each couple getting at least 2 books. And the way I'll be writing/publishing the books is very focused on the timeline! So, in Close to You, the main part of the book starts in summer and ends in winter. Milow and Ashby's story isn't over yet, and while they had a happy ending, there is still SO MUCH I have planned for them. It was impossible to fit everything into one book, which is why some things haven't been discussed yet. Ashby's past, for example.

The series follows each couple over time, with every book focusing on a (roughly) six-month period of their relationship. Each story captures a distinct phase, so you see how they grow, struggle, and change in that window. Together, the books build a longer timeline, letting you follow the couples "through the years." All the books will overlap in timelines, and there will be familiar moments from different perspectives.

So, when you feel like there are questions unanswered, know that they will definitely be answered in a future book.

Thank you for reading Close to You, and for loving and understanding my characters!

I can't wait to share more stories with you.

⤷ probably my fav book of the month so far! SO GOOD EVERYONE TRY ITT!

⋆˚࿔ 27th review of the year

"she wasn't built to carry resentment. she felt deeply, but she never clung to hatred. there was too much love in her for that. too much compassion that stretched even toward people who never deserved it."

₊‧꒰my thoughts꒱‧₊ 🦢
⤷ wow ok. i've been seeing this book a lot on booksta and was instantly intrigued! the cover is stunning and i love supporting new/debut authors 💌 this seemed right up my alley too. coming of age, EMOTIONAL romance?! sign me up. the author is also just the sweetest ever so i enjoyed reading her book 🥹 for 500 pages, i FLEWWWW thru this! her writing was very nice and there were parts where i teared up (happy and sad) i loved the first 100 pgs getting to see milow grow up. HER PARENTS. OH MY GOSH I LOVE THEM 😭

⤷ i wont say more bc i recommend going in blind, but PLEASE check tws!! anyway, i loved our two characters a lot + cant wait to read about other couples in this series! my biggest takeaway was milow and how she dealt with forgiveness. oh shes such a good example + role model i LOVE HER SO MUCH 😭

i recommend this to everyone! it is also 100% spice free. my only qualm is that there were some questions i want answered from their pov which i will put in the spoiler section below!

dont click if you havent read 💌

🫂| overall i hope more people read this so we can all yap! i also wonder if we'll get more of this couple as the series goes on?! i feel like there's MUCH more to say. 🙌

"you dont have to be fearless. being scared or nervous is part of life. just dont let the fear make the decisions for you."

"i think the right people are worth standing in the storm for."

"she let it pass, like it wasn't worth the space in her head. it was fascinating seeing how she always chose calm over bitterness, and that quiet kindness of hers was exactly what made me so proud of her."

i’m sorry, but i don’t think i can finish this book… i’m 33% in, and while the beginning was quite nice, i already find this book so obnoxious and insufferable.

the author reminds us of the fmc’s insane intelligence every two sentences. not to mention, these chapters are spent with everyone just glazing the fmc continuously in a way that doesn’t even feel authentic at all. the last time i had this was with violet from fourth wing. i’m sorry, but all this constant talk of how amazing the mc is BORES me. i would prefer that you show me!!! rather than tell me constantly oh my god. this kind of writing always feels to me like the author’s either self inserting themselves or is so bad at writing that they have to tell us in the boldest font just how perfect and wonderful their dear character is. stop trying to force me to like your protagonist from
the get go! why won’t you let me form my opinion myself??

not to mention the mmc is SOOOOOOO extremely worried about the fmc. while i like mmcs who worry and yearn for their love, when it’s this overdone it just feels so unrealistic to me. again it feels like they’re trying so hard to sell me their chemistry. stop knocking at my door, im not interested in hearing about our savior and lord jesus christ… i know some people like this and i respect that, but i personally strongly prefer more subtle romances, where you get butterflies and learn to love them through genuine and realistic build up. i don’t like perfect characters. i like flawed people.

my problem with the romance genre in general is that often, it just feels so…inauthentic. like you can often tell that romance authors try so hard to convince you of the pair’s chemistry and the characters in general, which is why romance books are always a hit or miss for me as i often feel like im being sold the characters personalities, stories and vulnerabilities rather than being shown. there is always so much potential which always gets executed rather tragically. unfortunately, this seems to be the case here as well, (of course i can’t speak about the entire book as i only read a third of this, but time is precious, so i’d rather be spending my time reading something i enjoy more.) i’m sad, because the plot actually sounded so amazing to me and it started out well enough, but when they were at this party and there was this common trope of the mean girls with “way too much make up on” and “boobs that looked like they were pushed up”, i got icked off SO bad. please, i beg you all to be more creative and stop shaming girls constantly for wearing make up and dressing freely. i’m annoyed by it because truly, the wattpad era is gone! stop this behavior dude. how about we be girls girls and look for more creative ways to display our character‘s struggles in social settings? of course there are textbook bullies sometimes, but come on. i’m tired of reading about fmcs who are so much better and nicer than all these other women…

i hope i wasn’t too mean, im not trying to insult the author or anything and i believe the author can definitely do some amazing work because clearly she has some amazing ideas - personally i did in some ways like stanley and scottie and also wesley and the mcs, though they were all quite one dimensional from what ive read, but to me, it’s just the execution that is lacking here.

── 3 stars !! ˚🗝 ⋆。
⤿ spoilers marked┆ ⋆˙⟡

this was...boring.
which is weird bcs this was such an anticipated release for me and it just fell so short in every way 😭

i will admit the starting was great. intriguing even.
nessa really nailed the child voice, the immature thoughts and feelings of a little girl who didn't know any better to the T but idk as the story progressed, it just kept like ... declining? almost the same topics were repeated like every chapter, making it drag so much towards the middle, which then piled a ton of shit in the end.

˚⊱🪷⊰˚ milow

milow was great. i liked her a lot but i feel like her trauma was... idk, downplayed? it felt weird that she was abused for all those years and there was no mention of any flashbacks or any sort of trauma in part 2 until it was actually revealed which was weird bcs one does not forget shit like that easily. plus the whole thing with hailie really pissed me off bcs

˚⊱🪷⊰˚ ashby

ashby was well...bland. don't get me wrong, he was sweet and caring and protective and all, but i saw no real romance between them? is that weird since this was literally a romance book? his character honestly felt like a side character ngl and then all he ever thought about was protecting milow and looking at milow and everything milow. which sounds amazing for a few pages, sure, but please, we need characters to have a functioning brain that process normal life and thoughts apart from the fmc too. and then all his trauma.

˚⊱🪷⊰˚other characters

stan and scottie were cool but they had no real depth tbh. the whole point of stan was to be a goofy empty head kinda person and the whole point of scottie was being the girl that resisted him and it was...meh.
jesper was actually an amazing character, ngl. loved him the most.

˚⊱🪷⊰˚overall thoughts

i feel like the author was heavily inspired by binding 13, which was very evident in a few scenes and topics, esp ashby and stans bromancs which i could tell was heavily aiming for johnny and gibsie level of friendship but again... it fell short. same with scottie and stans relationship (which was probably aiming for gibse and claire?) like sure scottie and stan are gonna be a couple but we did not need to make half the book about them, which was exactly how it felt. there was no real point to most of the side characters as well bcs like i said, they showed no real depth.

the reason this was still a three star read is because it got me out of my (new books) slump and despite being bored a lot, i actually enjoyed some of it? lmao i probably sound crazy but yk those books that are nice to read but aren't perfect? it was kinda like that 🤭

overall, i genuinely believe that this book had so much potential to be great but its just that the execution of it wasn't great which was the main reason it fell short.

I saw the previews for this book on TikTok and couldn’t wait to read it. I have to say, it wasn’t what I expected. I loved the beginning as much as it pained me, but I really liked how we saw Milow grow up and goshhh when Gus found her and protected her at the fire station made me sob, like the way she walked in pyjama in a winter storm damn. BUT I did not like the romance at all. I think I expected a heavier book, especially concerning the MC’s past. I would have loved to see her growth through it all, not only her mutism but the fact that she had been sexually abused as well. At the beginning it was clearly mentioned how traumatic it was for her, but when the romance picked on it was totally brushed aside which I think made me step away from the romance (and the fact that they were both adopted in the same family and calling them mom and dad🙂‍↕️🤚). It was still good, but for such heavy topics, I think it could have been taken care of better. Loved looooved the friendships and little group they had going on, absolutely obsessed with Stan, literally my favourite character.

“Always and forever.”

Love that is present in presence navigates the growth of every kind of love there is to exist. Being there for someone, no matter the situation, is a love unlike any other.

If I would choose to represent love in a physical form, I would choose the roots of a tree. Each root speaks of a type of love and this story holds the root of presence. Being there for someone, no matter the situation, is a form of love that navigates friendship. And what is friendship if not love.

The love between Milow and Ashby was rooted in the friendship that had grown over years, its strength and depth shown in the way Ashby always ran to her whenever he came home, in the way Milow found comfort in his eyes, in the way they broke down in each others arms.

From the moment they met, Milow and Ashby’s story spoke of warmth, healing, and so much love that it would fill a thousand sudoku books. Milow, despite her traumatic past, was so kind. And Ashby, through his struggles with swimming, chose to smile. Both carried a strength in their hearts that were leaden crammed with feeling.

Close to you is a story that we’ve all lived, being young and discovering things and experiencing emotions, it’s part of growing up. Anxiety is a quiet sort of entanglement that is unique to everyone but when seen, it’s a soothing type of comfort.

If a story of friendship and kindness speaks to you, I recommend Close to you. It comes out March 17th.

Thank you for the arc💘

It’s a good book, but I can’t help feeling like it had so much more potential. The first part was incredible, but the second felt like a completely different story. It left me a bit uncomfortable, especially because the author introduced some very heavy themes and then didn’t really follow through with them, which made them feel more like shock value than anything else.

I don’t usually like ya because It’s often juvenile . However this book didn’t feel that way. The emotion in this book >>>. .. the friendship group . I didn’t expect this book to have a friendship group that cares about each other so much..

I do wanna be clear before you see the short positive review that this for me was not perfection - it was a cute book with trauma and emotion in it . I could feel that the author is new to writing .

I do need add this the last 20% of the btw WTF. Like truly the last big felt like a huge mess of a book so it became a 2 stars. Other than that it was an enjoyable book . This book also lowkey gives binding 13 vibes .

This book had trauma in it but it worked - it didn’t feel like it was there just for the sake of it . This is a book marketed as a sad gut wrenching book and it totally is but is also a sweet book - both in romance and non romance plot wise too . I do wish we got a glimpse into what the mmc experienced before he was adopted into the same family too. We see what happened to the fmc and what she experienced but not the mmc .

Let me be clear ( since i know some people aren’t a fan of this kind of thing - the mmc and fmc grow up in the same family ( all 3 kids in the house are adopted by the parents ). But the fmc and mmc are more like best friends than brother and sister - considering they aren’t related .

the fact that all these characters in the group know sign language for the fmc . Like they all understand sign language because the fmc cannot speak at all . So they understand what she’s saying when she signs / they sign with her sometimes too and I love that . The fact we have a cast of 4 characters in one group ( two of which being main characters ? and a 5th that is there too .

I feel like sign language rep isn’t a thing that happens often in romance books especially not a whole friendship group that knows it and understands solely for one of the characters whether they be main or side character . So I absolutely loved to see that.

4.8⭐️| I don’t usually give out five stars, but i was seriously debating abt giving this one this rating. i feel like it deserved it, and i definitely did enjoy it! i ended up not rating it five stars, but by my standards, the rating i gave is pretty high.
i didn’t expect this book to be so heartbreaking. i was a bit hesitant to pick this one up because i wasn’t sure if i would enjoy it, but i am SO glad i did. i was convinced to read this because someone compared it to boys of tommen (and if you know me i ADORE boys of tommen with my whole heart and soul) so here i am. 🤩 close to you was so heartbreakingly beautiful, and ashby and wilow are my roman empire. like why can’t i have an ashby in MY LIFE oml
ashby is one of THE book boyfriends. he’s such a sweetheart and so patient with wilow it makes my heart ache
i stayed up all night reading this book because i couldn’t put it down. in the end i had to go to sleep because i had a braces appointment at 7:15 AM the next day (therefore wake up at 5:30AM). i did not sleep schedule did not thank me this morning.
from the beginning of this book, i cried. i can’t even COUNT on my two hands how many times i sobbed while reading this book wilow u deserve so much better
the whole hailie thingy was absolutely insane i feel like she died out of nowhere. i felt bad sure she had an abusive father or whatever but that does NOT give you an excuse to act the way you did i don’t care. i have a really iffy relationship with eyes and fingers being broken for some reason like i actually can’t stand it and that scene made me want to throw my kindle across the room i’m ngl
i can’t imagine how wilow must’ve felt. they broke her fingers and she couldn’t even communicate correctly, as hailie took that from her.
still i loved that wilow didn’t magically get her voice back, and i really enjoyed reading about her story. when ashby broke down after he found out he got her vocal cords surgically removed by her father so he could abuse her omg 💔
no like literally reading the first part of this book was actually devastating. i can’t.
now on to my issues with this book:
first, this wasn’t really an issue but the arguments between stan and scottie were amusing at first but then they got a bit irritating. i’m convinced scottie does have some type of problem or something similar because of the bonus chapter and way she acted (constant mood changes, fainting, dizziness, sickness, etc) so. it was hard to like her at times when she was so mean to stan (i love him sm🥹).
i wish that the other characters around wilow stopped babying her so much. wilow is an amazing complex character and it was kind of annoying to have ashby or the others feel like because she was mute she was more “weak” or couldn’t handle herself. i love ashby he’s literally so cute but im glad that in the end he atleast realized he was being a bit too intense😭😭
i liked the writing style of this book for the most part, but there were some scenes that with the way they were written made me cringe a bit. 😬
also, my main issue with this book was the fact that wilows sexual abuse was barely talked about after the first part. sure, when they found out why she got her vocal cords surgically removed mentioned it, but i felt as though it should’ve been interpreted more in the story. this was not simply a tiny detail and i wish it would’ve been included more, because sexual assault marks people forever and shouldn’t be mentioned “ocasionally” in a book where the fmc lost her voice (the main plot and virtue of the story) because of it.
apart from this, i loved this book and i can’t wait for the next book to come out!!

3.75 ⭐ rounding up to 4!

Spoilers!!!

The first half and even up to 60% was a 5 star read to me! I was genuinely loving it but when the bullying started (or in a way worsened) I just couldn’t get how Ashby didn’t protect her or stand up to her bullies??? Stan did that, Stand the friend??? Not Ashby the lover boy???? Why? Also, the scene at the pool and the other times with Aspen and Hailie he should’ve just shut them up, you know? He was too passive and I would have loved if he was actually protective of her at school where the trouble was, not at home in their safety. Also, why did Stan punch Bennett and not Ashby??? C’mon…

Another thing that annoyed me was how toward the end everybody just kept on saying they love each other. It got too fast, too sweet. I get it, found family, love the trope but it was a bit too much for me.

Anyways! Other than these things I genuinely enjoyed it and will most probably read the rest of the books 📚

I stayed up all night reading this book, it was so heartbreaking, gentle and beautiful.

It’s a YA romance with no spice; it’s so soft, emotional, and quietly heartbreaking. Milow’s story is heavy and painful. She can’t speak and the way her silence is portrayed felt incredibly real.

What really stayed with me, though, was how deeply I related to her. Not just the skin-picking, but her anxiety and the way she keeps everything inside. There’s a line where she talks about pretending she’s fine so no one worries, pushing everything down and just moving on like nothing’s wrong, and that hit really close to home.

The relationship between her and Ashby is beautiful. Their bond was so genuine and sweet and the way he understands her without words made me so emotional. He is so patient and protective and I love him so much 😭🤍

Despite all the heavy themes, there’s also so much gentleness in this story. I absolutely loved the found family! The people close to Milow all love and respect her so much and that was so beautiful to read 🤍

for weeks now i’ve seen promo for this book and just knew i had to read it. let’s just say, the promo didn’t disappoint.
besides seeing the promo, i went into this book not knowing what else to expect and im so glad i did. the emotions exploded as i read it and i wish i could go back and read this for the very first time again.

the amount of times i cried, laughed, smiled and applauded for milow. oh that girl needs protecting and im so happy she has ashby for that. however, the best thing about her was despite it all, she was able to stand up for herself and the people she loved.
ashby, i couldn’t have thought of a better character, in this fictional world or another, who would’ve been the best for milow. his kind, caring and generous soul is one of the best i’ve ever read about.
i cannot wait for more books in this series and to see them throughout each!

if you are wanting to read this, i recommend looking up the trigger warnings prior as it focuses on dark topics.

While I did enjoy the overall theme and the relationship, it felt like it was missing emotional depth.

My biggest issue was the lack of real yearning. You could tell that Ashby loved Milow, but I didn’t feel it as strongly as I wanted to. There was barely any intense inner monologue where he dwells on her or shows that kind of overwhelming longing that makes you ache as a reader. It all felt a bit surface-level instead of deeply emotional.

I also wish we had gotten more insight into Ashby’s trauma. It felt underdeveloped. And his reaction to everything that happened wasn’t strong enough. He just didn’t seem angry enough for me.

On top of that, the story felt somewhat repetitive, and I was hoping for more drama and stronger plot development. The ending with Hailie didn’t work for me either. Milow forgiving her, combined with the sudden tragic backstory felt forced.

If you loved The Boys of Tommen series, this book shares a similar emotional tone. It focuses more on the FMC and MMC's relationship throughout the years and watching them move through different stages of their lives. It felt incredibly tender and real.

While the book explores heavy themes, including SA and bullying, the author handles them with care~

Just want to start off by stating that I truly believe the author has so much potential, genuinely! I wish her the best and I hope that she brings a better writing style to the table as the years go on, definitely rooting for her! No hate to her at all! I really loved the original concept of reading about mutism and the overall characters/love story between them and then I found out that they were foster siblings so I felt icky reading about it. I downloaded the book on Amazon prime and still decided to give it a go.

I couldn’t get past it, I really wanted to but I just couldn’t. I’m up to chapter 29 but have not pushed past it. The dynamic between the FMC and MMC felt as though it could’ve been executed better, at the very least I wished that they had met at the foster care facility and then lost contact, later on finding themselves again during high school instead of being adopted by the same people. I couldn’t get past the fact that they grew up like siblings, both referenced mom and dad constantly when talking to each other, their other older brother viewed them as siblings and I found it strange that we never saw the public’s reaction to them being very close. The parents never noticed and it isn’t mentioned anywhere throughout the book who milow is to ashby through the public’s eye. It makes the readers confused because we sit there and go how does the mmc introduce the fmc to other people, classmates? Does he never call her his sister or adopted sister even though it is true- she is his adopted sister.

As a 24 year old, I also understand how it is to be 17 once. I understand the concept of arguing over little issues that turn out larger than they should be. I just couldn’t get past the constant spotlight on Stan and Scottie and their relationship dynamic. There were a lot of petty arguments that just seemed childish, truly reflecting their age. There wasn’t anything of true substance they really struggled with or argued about for it to be constantly brought up as ‘big issues’ that need to be resolved for them to be together. I became frustrated that it was being mentioned all the time, it seemed like a filler for the book.

I also had trouble understanding why we never heard about the struggles that come with being sexually assaulted and abuse in general. For example, her father would drink alcohol but then we later see her go to a party with alcohol-she doesn’t drink but still, no mention of that atmosphere and what it was like for her. No mention of any tests that were done on her to identify that she was sexually assaulted by her father, no therapy sessions, no confiding in others that she felt pain and had nightmares. Besides skin picking and anxiety, we don’t see any signs of trauma that a lot of survivors go through and deal with on a day to day basis. I would’ve loved to have seen some good representation on how traumatic it can truly be and how certain situations can trigger traumas. The very start of the book was triggering (part one) in a way that we witnessed what had happened between her and her father but after that, it was like all was forgotten. as someone who studied psychology for a period of time- we studied a girl that was isolated from society and the effects it had on her development. There was no mention of it within the book, she was isolated and no one knew of her existence but we don’t see any developmental issues from the isolation- I wish it had been covered more.

I also felt like the language that was used in PART 1 felt a bit mature for a 6 year old at times and the language in PART 2 felt childlike for a 16 year old.

Overall, I haven’t been able to finish it due to those reasons. Chapter 27 was hyped up a lot so I diligently read the chapters to get to it but didn’t really feel like it had much of an impact. We never see milow fall out of line, we never see her rage- her adopted parents hid the real reason she was mute and then it cuts off to ashby’s point of view instead of a potential climactic moment between her adopted parents. I wanted to see that rage, the grief, the sadness and anger but never did. people with mutism express in different ways but we never saw her express anything more than a bit of discomfort.

I hope for the authors book 2 that she will give time for herself to allow the writing to flow a bit more consistently. I believe I would be way more keen to see a love story between Stan and Scottie entering their college years, graduating high school and seeing how their relationship flourishes. Best wishes for the author, it was a good storyline overall and I hope she uses these points I’ve written to better her writing, she’s on the right track! Just needs some more practice and that’s totally okay ❤️
