I bet you never thought you'd need a sassy grim & glam reaper to give you the proverbial shake to "stop being so f$&kin hard on yourself"... Unfortunately for those who don't like being wrong, The Glam Reaper’s Guide to Slaying is here to do just that.

This is a quick, quirky little read that takes familiar lessons about self-love, confidence, negative self-talk, and accepting yourself and gives them a spooky little makeover.. The advice itself isn’t necessarily groundbreaking, but I actually think the presentation is what makes it work... Instead of feeling like someone is standing on a motivational soapbox telling you how to live your life, it feels more like getting a pep talk from your most unapologetically fabulous friend.. We do have spooky season right around the corner and this would make the perfect little add to any collection, but especially if you're one for displaying little conversational coffee table books. 

My only real "complaint" is that it’s very short, and  maybe it's just ME with my life being a trainwreck, but I could have used an additional lesson or two (or 72) .. I understand wanting to keep it "simple" so it has a better chance of feeling relateble... However I also feel as if we'd be surprised at the amount of similarities on more intimate levels we as humans go through... Maybe it was because I loved the character so much but I really wouldn't have minded a whole novel, just reminiscing on their life lessons and what got them to that point. 

Overall, this was a really fun, lighthearted reminder that sometimes we need to stop listening to the voices that make us doubt ourselves, embrace our weirdness, and give ourselves a little (a lot) more grace... It may not reinvent the self-help genre, but it sure does mix up the bag.. Making the usual reminders a lot more entertaining... Basically, if you like your motivational advice with a side of spooky, sassy, and slightly unhinged, the Glam Reaper might be exactly the life coach you didn’t know you needed. If I knew Perseopne wouldn't just light something on fire in protest, I'd hire them to coach my life in .25 seconds

The Glam Reaper’s Guide to Slaying by Bill Crisafi is an illustrated self-help book combining humor, the macabre, and affirmative language. The Glam Reaper is here to give readers some truths about self-love and treating others right.

Overall, there were a lot of sentiments that I have seen on social media over the years such as not putting others down to lift yourself up and that it's OK to be yourself even if other people don't get it. I don't know if this is the kind of book that is going to hold hard-hitting truths for most people, but it could probably serve as a reminder for others or be a fun gift for a friend who thinks of themselves as a glam reaper in their own way.

Because I got an ARC, I'm not sure what the final version will look like, but I would say that the art was sparse and pretty much exclusively the handful of characters that are used to deliver the affirmations and the truths. It's quite minimalistic and I can see the fashion influence from Bill Crisafi’s background.

I would recommend this to people who need a self-love reminder now and then

I enjoyed this spooky, sassy take on self-help. If you ever felt the need to have a grim reaper in drag stop by to set you straight on self-love, this is the book for you. It's full of cheeky takes on self acceptance, embracing your uniqueness, getting along with others, and a few other topics. The illustrations are fabulous and the cast of super cute characters is right out of Halloween season.

I don't normally listen to self-help books, but I'm a sucker for a great cover and title, and this one had me curious enough to venture outside my usual reading habits.

And I'm so glad I did because this was hilarious!

Beneath all the macabre humor and ridiculousness, there was something surprisingly wholesome about it.

I feel like we all need a little Glam Reaper sitting on our shoulder. She's a little angel. She's a little devil. But in the best way possible.

We are often our own worst critics, and sometimes we don't have a little Jiminy Cricket being our conscience to guide us through life. Instead, we're left with that internal voice, and let's face it, that bitch isn't always very nice.

What I loved about this book is that the Glam Reaper becomes the voice you actually want to hear. The one reminding you to give yourself some grace, laugh at yourself occasionally, embrace your weird, and stop beating yourself up over every imperfect thing you've ever done.

I've often said to my own kids, picture your negative thoughts about yourself as tiny paper cuts. How many would you have by the end of the day? If it's more than one, then it's one too many. We would never intentionally spend all day cutting someone we love over and over again, yet somehow we don't think twice about doing the emotional equivalent to ourselves.

Sure, it's easier said than done. You can't magically wake up one morning and decide you're never going to criticize yourself again. But The Glam Reaper's Guide to Slaying offers a wonderfully bizarre reminder that maybe the voice inside your head doesn't always have to be the one holding the knife.

Sometimes it can be the one reminding you that you have value and you're perfectly imperfect just the way you are. And that's okay, too.

Now, the audio is an experience all on its own.

Joel Froomkin was hilarious, and between his narration, comedic timing, character voices, and the perfectly placed sound effects, every character felt completely unique. The best way I can describe the audiobook is like listening to living illustrations. You aren't physically seeing these wonderfully bizarre characters, but between the voices, personalities, timing, and sound effects, your imagination certainly is. It made an already entertaining book that much more fun.

And maybe there's something particularly fitting about experiencing this book through audio. You're quite literally putting the Glam Reaper's voice inside your head, except this time it's not the asshole reminding you of everything you've ever done wrong. It's the one telling you to stop being so damn hard on yourself.

And frankly, that bitch has had the microphone long enough. Let the Glam Reaper have a turn.

POV: The Glam Reaper wears PRADA!

Okay, hear me out… What if your next motivational speaker was a sassy, glamorous Grim Reaper who showed up just to tell you: “Stop being so effing hard on yourself.”

Honestly..... I’m listening.

The Glam Reaper’s Guide to Slaying is a quick, quirky little read that takes those familiar reminders about self-love, confidence, negative self-talk, and accepting yourself.... and gives them a deliciously spooky makeover.

Is the advice completely revolutionary? No. But honestly, that wasn't the point for me.
It doesn't feel like someone climbed onto a motivational soapbox and started yelling inspirational quotes at me. It feels like your most fabulous, slightly unhinged friend grabbed you by the shoulders and said: “BABE. Enough. We are not doing this to ourselves anymore.” And THAT presentation is what made it work for me.

It's lighthearted, fun, a little weird, a little spooky, and honestly… kind of comforting.

And with spooky season creeping closer?! This would be such a cute addition to a book collection.... especially if you're the type who loves books that make people pick them up and immediately ask, “Okay, what is THIS?”

BUT I HAVE ONE CONFESSION… I WANTED MORE. And maybe that's because my life currently resembles a dumpster fire with Wi-Fi, but I could have used another lesson.
Or two.

The book is intentionally short and simple, and I completely understand why. It makes the advice approachable and relatable. But I kept thinking about how much more there could have been. Because beneath all those little life lessons are things so many of us quietly struggle with.... self-doubt, insecurity, feeling like we're not enough, beating ourselves up over every little mistake.

And I would've happily spent an entire novel getting to know the Glam Reaper, learning the stories behind those lessons, and hearing what brought them to those realizations.

Basically…I wasn't ready to clock out when the Reaper did.

Overall, this was such a fun little reminder that sometimes we need to stop listening to the voices telling us we're not enough.

We need to embrace our weird. Give ourselves some grace. And maybe stop treating ourselves like we're the villain in our own damn story.

It doesn't reinvent self-help. It just makes the familiar advice WAY more entertaining. So if you like your motivation served with a generous helping of spooky, sassy, glamorous, and mildly unhinged…

Yeah.

The Glam Reaper might be the life coach you didn't know you needed.

Would I hire them to coach my life? Absolutely. Would I trust them around flammable objects? ....Probably not.

This book is basically self-help for people who would rather be haunted than be told to “just think positive".

The Glam Reaper’s Guide to Slaying is weird, macabre, profane, unexpectedly wholesome, and completely committed to the bit.

At its core, the actual advice is pretty simple: stop letting negative self-talk run your life, embrace what makes you different, set boundaries, don’t tear other people down to feel better about yourself, and live authentically.

But you’re not really here for groundbreaking self-help.

You’re here because apparently sometimes you need the Grim Reaper and a collection of demons, ghosts, witches, and other assorted weirdos to tell you to get your shit together. 😂

The humor is what makes this work. It’s campy, morbid, pun-heavy, occasionally ridiculous, and constantly willing to undercut its own motivational message with something absurd. The illustrations are a huge part of that comedy—sometimes supplying context that isn’t obvious from the words alone.

They’re also the reason this landed at 4★ for me rather than higher.

I understand exactly what the author is going for, and by the end I was completely on board with the bizarre visual style. But some of the darker and more grotesque imagery was genuinely jarring, especially compared with how light and playful the material felt in audio.

And the audiobook is fantastic.

I experienced both formats, and if I had to choose only one, I’d pick the audio. The performance absolutely made the experience for me. The delivery gives the humor personality and makes the macabre material feel breezy and playful rather than particularly dark.

That said, having both was probably the best experience of all. There are visual punchlines in the illustrated edition that made jokes click in ways they hadn’t in audio. Apparently some jokes really do require seeing the pumpkin’s thong. 💀

This is definitely a know-your-audience book. Expect profanity, dark humor, macabre and occasionally grotesque imagery, body humor, death jokes, and some delightfully stupid visual gags.

If that sentence made you recoil, probably skip it.

The premise here is basically: Death, but make it fashion. The Glam Reaper rolls through the afterlife collecting a crew of certified disasters — Miss Phillip (a demon with her own inner demon, which is very "it's demons all the way down"), Orange Frog (bullied over her fit, relatable), Miss Rotten (a pumpkin who tears down other pumpkins because she's projecting), Sexy Ghost (haunted by her own cringe era), and Babushka Toad (struggling to keep her garden alive).

The whole thing is basically a TikTok girlboss pep talk dressed up as a funeral. "Tell those voices in your head to drop dead" shouldn't hit as hard as it does, but here we are.

The art carries a LOT of weight since this is basically three sentences of text per page, so if you're not into the visual style, the wisdom alone isn't going to save you. Also the puns. So many puns. If you're allergic to the word "slay," this is not your book — it is used at a frequency that should require some kind of licensing fee.

Where it loses me a little: none of the "life lessons" are actually new. It's the same "stop being mean to yourself, stop tearing others down" content you've already absorbed from every self-love infographic since 2019. It's advice I'd give to a child (but this book is def not child friendly).

TLDR: A quick, campy little confidence boost that reads in twenty minutes and will absolutely end up as a coffee table book in a gay man's apartment (affectionate). Doesn't reinvent self-help, but the Glam Reaper could tell me I'm mid and I'd thank her for it.

I am probably not the target audience for a book with "slaying" in the title, which may be part of why I enjoyed this so much. Bill Crisafi is funny, strange, theatrical, and completely himself on the page. There is plenty here about confidence, creativity, figuring out who you are, and refusing to make yourself smaller for other people's comfort, but it never felt like I was being lectured by somebody who had recently discovered self-help. He's lived some things. You can tell.

I especially liked the parts about getting older and continuing to become yourself. That's something I understand much better now than I did at thirty. There is a ridiculous idea floating around that eventually you're supposed to settle into your final form and stop changing, dressing strangely, making things, taking risks, or surprising people. Absolutely not. Crisafi's whole Glam Reaper persona feels like a cheerful refusal of that idea, and this old crone approves. If anything, age has made me less willing to waste what time I have left pretending to be more respectable than I am.

This book made me laugh, but there were places where it caught me off guard too. Under all the glamour and wicked humor, Crisafi has some tender things to say about surviving difficult periods and making a life out of whatever remains. I liked that he never sanded off his weirdness to make the message easier to sell. I've read enough inspirational books to last several lifetimes, and most of them blur together almost immediately. I won't be confusing this one with anything else.

Wasn't all too familiar with the author's work, or that of the Glam Reaper prior to reading, but the description caught my interest, so I had to check it out.

A self-help book, the presentation and focus of which is more geared towards women, also offers advice that introduces perspective and introspection, for just about anyone. The Glam Reaper is our guide throughout the literature, dropping grains of knowledge or providing advice on topics we all may have experienced at least once in our lives.

With each new scene, the Glam Reaper helps their friends with the issues they are experiencing in life. For example: how we can approach and handle our own intrusive thoughts or inner demons. This can extend to how we perceive ourselves, as well as how we think others see us. Both play a role in our personal dynamic, our identity of which being shaped by these factors.

One thing the author captured perfectly was the warmth of having someone like the Glam Reaper in your life. It's about building up instead of tearing down. The art work is pretty trippy, and in light of its more minimalist leanings, there is a lot of detail captured between each character or scene. Overall, this was enjoyable for both the content and the wisdom gained as a result of the experience.

Are you too goth for the Hallmark store? You wouldn't buy this book.

However, if you are about to go to college and your slightly dotty aunt wants to buy you something for your graduation party and knows nothing else about you than that you like dark clothing (and are possibly part of the queer community), this is absolutely the book you will unwrap. You might not read it for most of the semester, until your roommate sees it, guffaws that it looks "Like, totally lame," and then leaves. Only then will you open it up, see your aunt's inscription where she tells you how proud she has been of you (even when you beheaded your Barbies), and page through it. It won't take you fifteen minutes to read the whole thing, unless you linger over some of the weirder illustrations. None of the advice is *profound,* but this isn't Nietzsche over here. You don't pick up this book to be astounded by wisdom. You do it because you want Instagram-ready comics that fit your aesthetic.

The next time your roommate calls it lame, you say, "Nah, it's actually kinda okay. Check out this frog's boobs." And your roommate reads it, quotes something, and that becomes one of your inside jokes until graduation.

🎧 ARC Audiobook

I had no idea what I was getting into, but I absolutely loved the cover and title. The Glam Reaper’s Guide to Slaying is a quick little “you better work, bitch” kind of book with some really fun audio production.

That said, I honestly think this story would work better as a physical copy. It feels like the artwork probably adds a lot of depth that doesn’t fully come across in audio alone. I may give it another listen, but I think I’d want to read it with the illustrations first.

At first, I genuinely thought this was a children’s book…that just happened to swear. Lines like, “You can always fix your doom and gloom if you just adjust your shitty attitude a little bit,” completely threw me off.

The whole thing gave me major “the flower girls are drunk again” vibes from Monster-in-Law. It’s quirky, over-the-top, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. I think an immersive read with the illustrations and audio together could make this book shine.

The self-care message also felt pretty surface level. Most of the advice seemed obvious, but maybe that’s the point—it keeps things simple and approachable. I’m still kind of stewing on this one, and I could definitely see my opinion changing after experiencing it in a different format.

I'm not into self-help but I am into anything spooky which is how the title caught my eye.

I'm also not on social media so I had no idea who the author is, but the description intrigued me, so I gave it a try.

Framed as a self-help book aimed mainly at women, the Glam Reaper is your recurring guide, offering short, practical pieces of advice and perspective on common life issues.

Each scene shows the Glam Reaper helping friends with personal struggles, which was both sweet and funny; how to face intrusive thoughts or inner demons, how we view ourselves, and how we imagine others see us.

We can all relate to these moments of self doubt and these perspectives influence our identity and personal relationships.

The author captures the heartwarming feeling of having someone like the Glam Reaper in your life: having an inner voice that builds you up instead of eroding your self esteem.

I liked the illustrations—they'll appeal to fans of spooky vibes and even to readers who aren't a fan of that style.

I appreciated the book's supportive messages, though they didn't offer anything new.

The Glam Reaper and her fabulous collection of friends each have their own struggles, and I loved how the book tackled them with humor, sass, and genuinely encouraging advice. The illustrations fit the tone perfectly and made this feel like a quick, entertaining read that you can easily pick up whenever you need a little confidence boost.

I especially enjoyed the cheeky mantras and reminders throughout. It’s definitely not your traditional self-help book—and that’s exactly what makes it work. It feels like getting advice from your most unhinged, fabulous friend who is absolutely determined to make sure you stop being so hard on yourself.

Let me start by saying I don’t typically read anything labeled “guide to.” Why? Because I don’t usually find them interesting. HOWEVER, this one caught my eye from the beginning because of the cover. A Grim Reaper in red heels telling you how to slay? Um, yes please!

This is a very short and sweet guide, and most of all, the illustrations are a GEM! They are fantastic and fierce. By the end I was like, “I need my nails done and some heels!”

When it comes down to it, I related to many of the lessons described in this book. It really hit home after the very stressful term I’ve had but I persevered and this book really gave me some important reminders about recharging and sitting in stillness. It also reminded me to give myself some positive affirmations and remind myself that I am doing my best. At times that can be hard to do when life gets so busy and I end up neglecting my own emotional state.

Overall, the illustrations are amazing and this is a quick read with some great reminders that sometimes you just need to slow down, take care of yourself, and remember that when you’re in front of that mirror you should say, “I am a hot bitch.”

The Glam Reaper's Guide to Slaying: Life Lessons for Rebellious Souls by Bill Crisafi was a delightful, sassy, uplifting, illustration-heavy book that had me talking to myself, saying "yeeesss," and nodding along in agreement the whole time.

I read it in about 20 minutes, and I can already see myself coming back to it whenever I need a dramatic, glam, confidence-boosting pick-me-up. This isn't a traditional book. It's an inspirational work of art, and I can absolutely see myself buying copies for my sister and friends.

The story follows a fabulous Glam Reaper on a journey to pick up their friends on the way to a party. The artwork is colorful, engaging, and bursting with personality. It's unapologetically for the girls, the gays, and the theys.

5 Stars - For anyone who needs a reminder to take up space, embrace who they are, and absolutely slay while doing it.

Bill Crisafi has written a self-help book for the ages meshing together the occult, drag, and his passion for fashion.


I honestly don't know what can be more empowering than a Glam Reaper telling me that my vulnerability is my power.  


Miss Reaper teaches us self-empowering lessons through example with her friends.  A demon goat with, a frog witch with a unique bikini, a jack-o'-lantern wearing a thong, and so many more!  


This book, through amazing artwork and captivating dialogue, teaches us to be unapologetically ourselves.  Be confident and hold our heads high.  Find joy in the everyday because life is beautiful.  Accept that we all make mistakes and should give ourselves grace to move forward.

The Glam Reaper's Guide to Slaying is the hilarious, sassy, and surprisingly uplifting pep talk I didn't know I needed! Listen to the "therapist" diva, reminding us that even demons have inner demons and that it's okay not to be our best selves every day. Through laugh out loud comedy and relatable moments of negative self talk, she encourages you to tell those voices in your head to "drop dead!" This descriptive, witty audiobook had me smiling from start to finish, and at only 22 minutes long, I immediately listened to it back to back. I could honestly play this every day whenever I need a reset, a confidence boost, or a fabulous pick-me-up. Can I please have a daily visit from the Glam Reaper?

I'm hoping there's more books like this from Bill Crisafi!
