After the shame of Lydia’s unforgivable elopement with Mr. Wickham, the Bennet family is plunged into the depths of disgrace. Elizabeth, certain that the scandal has irrevocably severed any possibility with Mr. Darcy, travels to London where her father is engaged in a desperate, fruitless search.
There salvation arrives from the most impossible Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.
Darcy, armed with his intimate knowledge of Wickham’s true character, achieves what no other could, locating the errant couple . But his help demands that Elizabeth confronts the profound consequences of her own pride and hasty judgments .
As Darcy takes every step to redeem the Bennet family, offering protection, security, and a path to a respectable future for Lydia , Elizabeth watches the man she thought she despised become the most honorable and generous gentleman she has ever known.
In the tense aftermath of the crisis, will Elizabeth and Darcy retreat into their former prejudices or claim the happiness won through mutual respect, profound gratitude, and a love forged in the fires of great misfortune?
Elizabeth and Darcy get their HEA here, but they're not the true focus here. This is Lydia's story in a version where Lydia is recovered, though too late in some ways. She doesn't conceive. She does grow. The most memorable moment for me is when the men are deciding Lydia's fate and Mr Darcy argues for informing her fully of all the particulars (W's character, debt, lies, and dishonorable conduct towards young women as well as his exact demands in exchange for marrying her) and letting her choose. This leads to a scene that is a turning point in her own understanding and growth. Lydia gets her own HEA. W is shipped off to India (I don't prefer this solution. I'm never sure why any other place should be saddled with him. When he's impressed or sent to debtors prison, I always imagine he'll have limited access to women, but it's a very common solution.)
Darcy acts as the older brother the Bennet's needed.
I recommend it. Lydia is broken apart and grows anew.
A very interesting and well structured novella - 4.25*
I very much enjoyed this book which allowed the reader, and Elizabeth, to see Darcy in action as he negotiated the situation between Lydia and Wickham. This allows Elizabeth to see that her changing opinion of Darcy is not false.
I very much appreciated the way in which the characters of Lydia and Mr Bennet were written. They are often portrayed as rather two dimensional but here the author shows the complexity of their characters to a far greater extent.
A sweet, elaborated account of the search for Lydia after her elopement with Wickham. Elizabeth accompanies Mrs. Gardiner and the children to London, where Mr. Bennet, Mr. Gardiner, and Darcy are hard at work recovering the missing girl. Darcy's solution is clever and satisfying, and it leads to a second proposal much more quickly. I really enjoyed the author's writing style.
Quick read, fine writing. Just really liked this Darcy and how he handled Lydia situation. But it didn't somehow feel like a complete book and didn't affect me emotionally. E&D don't really talk, wish they had a conversations atleast.
In spite of the fact that the story is mainly focused on Lydia, I enjoyed it very much. We get to see Darcy taking care of business and doing the best he can for Lydia. Elizabeth is also in London, so she has the opportunity to see that Darcy is truly a fine man.
