How to Stop Snapping at the People You Love (As Well As the Ones You Don’t): A compassionate guide to rage, regulation and repair

Rate this book
In this practical guide, psychotherapist and bestselling author Anna Mathur helps you understand what your anger is really telling you so you can catch it sooner, calm faster and repair more deeply.

You didn’t used to be like this.
The sharp words, the slammed drawers, the guilt that follows.
You tell yourself to hold it together, but somehow, you keep finding yourself back here.

Anna knows that moment well. One evening, hot and exhausted in her kitchen as her children argued and whined, she felt the heat rise up and spill out in a shout that left her shaken and ashamed. That moment became the spark for this book.

What if your anger isn’t bad, and it isn’t something you need to get rid of?

In How to Stop Snapping at the People You Love, Anna helps you reframe rage not as shameful or dangerous, but as a signal pointing to unmet needs, crossed boundaries and emotional overload.

With gentle insight and practical tools, you’ll learn how

spot your triggers earlier and recognise what your anger is trying to protect

pause the spiral when you feel the heat rising

recover faster after you’ve snapped, without drowning in shame

repair more deeply, so conflicts don’t leave lasting damage

communicate your needs and boundaries with more steadiness and clarity

use anger’s energy for change, not destruction

This is a supportive guide for anyone who feels stuck in cycles of irritability, overwhelm, and regret, especially in the relationships that matter most.

Because anger doesn’t mean you're broken, it makes you human. And when you learn to listen to it, it can become your greatest source of clarity, compassion and connection.

In the first chapter I thought this will be a nice practical book. In chapters 3 and 4 I was crying. In the following chapters, I had so many light bulb moments. And now that I'm finished, I'm thinking this book might actually change my life.

Full of compassion, insights and practical advice, I found this book very helpful and it resonates so well with me as an often overwhelmed mother of three.

I highly recommend the audiobook which was so well narrated by the author. But I'm thinking of buying a hardcopy just so I can return to it in some time and underline important parts.

How to Stop Snapping at the People You Love (as Well as the Ones You Don't) is a book whose title I found funny. However, the book itself is anything but funny. It is humourless, entertainment-free, gossip-free — and probably the most serious book I have ever read (or, in this case, listened to on Everand).

⭐ I give it 5 stars because, despite the lack of amusement, it was incredibly thorough and carefully written.

It covers topics such as our family background, cultural influences, different stages of life (including hormonal changes such as menopause), our everyday workload, the challenges of having children and a career, what we eat, how we sleep, and so much more.

🧠 The book also includes many questions to ask yourself when you feel you're about to snap, as well as practical tips to help you become more self-aware, emotionally regulated and calm.

Another thing I really enjoyed was the author's voice — literally. She narrated the audiobook herself, and I found her voice almost healing. She gave so many relatable examples of our emotions, our anger, and what actually happens in our bodies when we become overwhelmed.

❤️ I recommend this book to everyone who is interested in the topic and who wants to slow down in this fast-paced everyday life.
