125 books169 followersKeiji Nakazawa (中沢啓治; Nakazawa Keiji) was born in Hiroshima and was in the city when it was destroyed by an atomic bomb in 1945. All of his family members who had not evacuated died as a result of the explosion after they became trapped under the debris of their house, except for his mother, as well as an infant sister who died several weeks afterward. In 1961, Nakazawa moved to Tokyo to become a full-time cartoonist, and produced short pieces for manga anthologies such as Shōnen Gaho, Shōnen King, and Bokura.
Following the death of his mother in 1966, Nakazawa returned to his memories of the destruction of Hiroshima and began to express them in his stories. Kuroi Ame ni Utarete (Struck by Black Rain), the first of a series of five books, was a fictional story of Hiroshima survivors involved in the postwar black market. Nakazawa chose to portray his own experience directly in the 1972 story Ore wa Mita, published in Monthly Shōnen Jump. The story was translated into English and published as a one-shot comic book by Educomics as I Saw It.
Immediately after completing I Saw It, Nakazawa began his major work, Hadashi no Gen (Barefoot Gen).This series, which eventually filled ten volumes, was based on the same events as I Saw It but fictionalized, with the young Gen as a stand-in for the author. Barefoot Gen depicted the bombing and its aftermath in graphic detail, with Gen's experiences being even more harrowing than Nakazawa's own. It also turned a critical eye on the militarization of Japanese society during World War II and on the sometimes abusive dynamics of the traditional family. Barefoot Gen was adapted into two animated films and a live action TV drama.
Nakazawa announced his retirement in September 2009, citing deteriorating diabetes and cataract conditions.He cancelled plans for a Barefoot Gen sequel. In September 2010, Nakazawa was diagnosed with lung cancer and in July 2011, metastasis from lung cancer was found. He died on December 19, 2012.

الحقيقة يا جماعة جن الحافي بقى ممل جدا.
عايزين قنبلة نووية تانية عشان الموضوع بوخ.
بجد مبقاش فيه قصة، مبقاش فيه مأساة تضاهي مأساة القنبلة و اللي تقريبا خلصنا كل المعاناة الممكنة اللي ممكن تسببها.
ايوة لسه في امراض و ايوة ناس هتموت كمان ستين سنة من تاريخ القصة بسبب نفس الأمراض.
بس بعد فاجعة القنبلة و بعد فاجعة السنين القليلة اللي بعد القنبلة، مبقاش فيه حاجة تتقال ولا تتحكي.
قضينا نص الكتاب نحكي عن السلام و لازم نحقق السلام و لازم مظاهرات عشان السلام و اللي هو عمره ما هيتحقق لأن الناس بطبيعتهم مش كويسين.
الندية دايما هتبقى موجوده، الخوف من الآخر دايما هيبقى موجود، الطمع دايما هيبقى موجود، و الشر دايما هيبقى موجود.

Natsue suffers from appendicitis which is actually cancer. Gen and his brother decides to seperate to go on their respective ways. Gen feels very isolated but soon gets over the feeling and decides to live with Ryuta and friends also because the city council decides to break down his home as under compulsory acquisition which make Gen furious. Gen decides to take the path of self reliance.

بعد خمس سنين من إلقاء القنبلة علي اليابان ومحاولة جن واسرتة في ممارسة حياتهم بشكل طبيعي
تتطور الاحداث في هذا الجزء بإشتعال الحرب بين كوريا الشمالية والجنوبية عام ١٩٥٠ واستغلال بعض التجار اليابانين للظروف والتربح من بيع الأسلحة والمعادن لكوريا للتربح من الحرب
وعلي صعيد اخر ينشط بعض اليساريين في اليابان ويعارضون الانسياق في الحرب الكورية
مع طبعا بعض الصراعات المعتادة في حياة جن مع الأوغاد واثار القنبلة الصحية التي أصابت اصدقاءة

Kesedihan semakin menjadi di bagian ini. Meski lima tahun telah lewat dari 1945, ketika bom atom menghancurkan Hiroshima, nyatanya luka itu semacam sekam yang kapan saja bisa membara dan menghabisi generasi Gen.
Gen sudah sekolah menengah. Kebencian kepada perang dan bom semakin tegas. Gurunya juga demikian. Namun, nyatanya kebencian ini justru menjadi bumerang, karena Gen dan orang-orang yang meneriakkan perdamaian dianggap sebagai komunis. Karena mereka tahu Amerika yang menjadi pimpinan sekutu sedang memanfaatkan Jepang untuk terlibat dalam perang saudara di semanjung Korea.
Luka selanjutnya adalah banyak generasi seangkatan gen yang selamat dari 'mati langsung', namun menyimpan akibat radiasi menahun. Ada yang kena leukimia, radang usus tanpa sembuh, bahkan kehabisan sel darah putih.
Tetap menarik dan asyik diikuti.

Vol. 8 of Barefoot Gen is a bit more of a hodgepodge than the previous books. There are several narrative threads here:
1) It’s 1950. Gen has a conflict with a boy at school. He learns that the boy wants nothing more than to die.
2) The Korean War begins and there’s an increasing anti-communist sentiment. Gen’s teacher is accused of being a Red.
3) Gen gets in a fight with a man who is war profiteering
4) Gen tries to save a friend who seems to be dying from an infection
5) Some updates on Gen’s brothers
The series continues to be consistent.

نستكمل في هذا الجزء حياة جن وجميع اليابانيين المروعة من بعد الحرب رغم مرور خمس سنوات على انتهائها وسيطرت أمريكا عليها فقد جعلتها جحيماً لا يطاق.
وفي هذا الجزء يتم التطرق للعديد من المواضيع المهمه التي يعاني منها الناس بعد الحرب :
_وأهمها "تجار الموت" هم أثرياء الحرب
من استغلوا الحرب وسعيدون بها لأنها جعلتهم أثرياء.
_ أيضاً تحدثت عن بداية الحرب بين الكوريتين وتأثيرها على اليابان.

several new story lines - the hiroshima baseball team giving hope to the people, the war in North Korea (which I admittedly know too little about so I learned something from the story and front matter), and the pacifist teacher who looks a lot like Koji and reminds us of Gen's dad. This volume really gets on the pacifist/anti-war soapbox, which I totally dig, but I can see how it would be annoying for others.

تجار الموت هم مصاصو الدماء الذي يتاجرون في كل شيء يتعلق بالقتل والخراب ويكسبون من وراءه الأمو��ل. تاريخ الحروب لا يتغير منذ العصر الروماني إلى الآن، الإنسان لا يتطور ويتمسك برأيه فينتصر أو ينهزم ويتكرر هذا دائمًا، ما تغير فقط هو التقدم العلمي وتطور أسلحة القتال. فالحروب لن تنتهي والبشر حيوانات تتصارع، إن كل إنسان له فكره الخاص ودينه وله ما يكرهه ومن يحسده، إنه كائن أناني ولهذا لن ينتهي الصراع بين البشر أبدًا، والحروب هي طريقة طبيعية لتقليل عدد السكان. الأمريكان بعد استسلام اليابان يريدون أن يحركوا اليابان على هواهم فإن زاد من يعارضهم فلن يستطيعوا ذلك، اليابانيون يشتاجرون من أجل أمريكا، وأمريكا هي التي أقامت الحرب الكورية، لماذا كل ذلك؟ كله من أجل مصلحة أمريكا. يقول تشارلي شابلن: إذا قتلت شخصًا وأنت تسير في الشارع، سوف يقبضون عليك وتعاقب بالإعدام، لكن عندما تذهب إلى جبهة الحرب كلما قتلت أعداء أكثر حصلت على نياشين وأصبحت بطلاً. من هنا، بدأت اليابان تدرك أهمية التعليم الابتكاري، فليس مهمًا الحصول على درجات مرتفعة في الامتحانات، لكن المهم أن يفهم الطالب ويتعلم شيئًا مفيدًا من أجل مستقبله، هذا في الخمسينيات! وعلى ذكر السياسية فأنظمة الدول الكبرى تضغط على الدول الصغرى لتحارب بدلاً عنها، وبالتالي يُقتل ويعاني مواطنو الدول الصغرى، الإنسان لا يتطور أبدًا لماذا لا يستطيع حل مشكلاته بالتفاهم؟ أصحاب السلطة هم من يقيمون الحروب والذي يعاني بسبب القنبلة الذرية أكثر من يعرف فظاعة الحروب. وبالنسبة لهم، يكون الطعام هو الشيء الوحيد الذي يقلب حزنهم فرحًا. ينهار جن أمام منزله الذي يهدمه المجلس المحلي ويصرخ بأن الديمقراطية الحقيقي تعني أنه لو افترضنا وجود ١٠ أشخاص ووافق تسعة واعترض واحد، فيجب أن نستمع جيدًا لذلك الواحد ونفكر فيما يقول. ولا يكون أمام الحزانى سوى السكر، الفقر الشديد والبحث عن المخدر. مجددًا يتذكر جن كلام أبيه: "اليابان لا تملك موارد طبيعية، وليس أمامها كي تعيش إلا أن تقيم علاقات سلمية مع دول العالم وتصدر إليهم منتجاتها، أما إن حاولت الاستيلاء على الموارد الطبيعية للدول المجاورة فسوف تحاربها تلك الدول وبالتالي سوف يموت كثيرون في تلك الحروب. من يشعلون الحرب هم تجار الموت الذي يستغلونها لمصالحهم الشخصية ولا يهمهم ما يحدث لبقية البشر."

What a moment in time to read this volume as an American.
Here we open with a student who is aggressive, saying war will always happen and there’s no cure, angry at the world. Gen fights him, and he pleads to be killed. Later we learn it’s because he has leukemia and knows he will die, but doesn’t know exactly when. He had hoped to become a baseball star, but hope is lacking in all ways for him.
The Korean War is starting, and the Americans are using Japan as their base for the war. Will they bring the people of Japan into it? A favorite teacher is sacked by the Americans for teaching peace and speaking out against the occupation and war. Natsue gets sick, and can’t heal properly because her immune system is so shot. Gen discovers drinking. Japanese war profiteers make money off of war industry. Houses in Hiroshima are being destroyed for “city peace project”. The remaining Nakaoka boys split - Akiro for Osaka to become a businessman of peace, Koji to get married and become an engineer of peace, and Gen, 13, going to live with Ryuta, Katsuko, and Musabi as Hiroshima orphans.
Absolutely glossed over in American schools and education is the occupation of Japan post WWII. In fact, Japan disappears from our history books after VJ Day. Sure, people might know we still have a military base there, but no one thinks why or how we got it, or what it means to the Japanese. And Japan is not allowed to have any “instruments of war”, making them reliant on the US for military assistance. Which, given the current administration’s destain for our allies, makes me worry about them. What would Kenji Nakazama think about the shift toward getting defense missiles and such, the way Japan is being forced to reconsider its constitution and article 9?
Very sobering. I can see why some might think it’s a bit preachy, but I always find that a strength of the series - his purpose in telling his story is clear and never wavers.
Here we open with a student who is aggressive, saying war will always happen and there’s no cure, angry at the world. Gen fights him, and he pleads to be killed. Later we learn it’s because he has leukemia and knows he will die, but doesn’t know exactly when. He had hoped to become a baseball star, but hope is lacking in all ways for him.
The Korean War is starting, and the Americans are using Japan as their base for the war. Will they bring the people of Japan into it? A favorite teacher is sacked by the Americans for teaching peace and speaking out against the occupation and war. Natsue gets sick, and can’t heal properly because her immune system is so shot. Gen discovers drinking. Japanese war profiteers make money off of war industry. Houses in Hiroshima are being destroyed for “city peace project”. The remaining Nakaoka boys split - Akiro for Osaka to become a businessman of peace, Koji to get married and become an engineer of peace, and Gen, 13, going to live with Ryuta, Katsuko, and Musabi as Hiroshima orphans.

"Satu pembunuhan melahirkan satu penjahat. Berjuta-juta pembunuhan melahirkan satu pahlawan. Jika kau bunuh seseorang di jalanan, kau akan dihukum karena pembunuhan. Tapi kalau kau pergi ke medan perang, semakin banyak orang yang kau bunuh, semakin banyak medali yang akan kau dapatkan dan kau menjadi pahlawan yang lebih hebat lagi."
Kutipan film Monsieur Verdoux-nya Charlie Chaplin disampaikan Gen kepada Mr. Ohta, guru sekolah Gen yang "mengundurkan diri" dari sekolah. Mr. Ohta bisa dibilang adalah aktivis antiperang. Hal tersebut membuat dirinya termasuk dalam Pembersihan Merah yang dilakukan aparat pemerintah. Idealismenya yang antiperang membuat Mr. Ohta dituduh sebagai komunis.
Gen menolak Mr. Ohta mundur sebagai guru. Apalagi dia dan kawan-kawannya menyukai cara Mr. Ohta mengajar dan bersikap sebagai guru. Gen (lagi-lagi) menjadi penggerak. Bersama teman-temannya, ia membolos dan datang ke rumah Mr. Ohta, meminta Mr. Ohta tetap mengajarkan mereka. Tentu saja aksi Gen dkk mendapat tentangan dari kepala sekolah.
Kebencian Gen terhadap perang makin memuncak saat ia mengetahui seorang mantan tentara yang menjadi penjual bahan senjata. Yang membuat Gen muak karena penjualan bahan senjata tsb membuat perang tiada henti. Gen makin muak dengan orang-orang egois, pemerintah Jepang, dan Amerika--yang selalu memicu perang. Bahkan hingga kini. Amerika (dan beberapa negara lain) selalu terlibat dengan perang dan kekacauan yang terjadi di dunia. Perang-perang yang diyakini sebagian orang sebenarnya untuk kepentingan bisnis senjata. Hhh.

The series jumps ahead to 1950 with his volume. Gen has moved forward into middle school, and he has a new teacher. This teacher is someone who wants to teach about the horrors of the World War II and promote piece, and that brings him into conflict with the school administration (and Japan's government). It is clear that leadership wants to rebuild pride in the country and in the emperor, and that can only be accomplished if people forget what happened. When the teacher is fired, Gen and his classmates jump up to try and defend him.
Gen also finds himself confronting some of the new ills that are arising in the new Japan, including drug use, arms trade (and getting rich off of it), and the rise of the Korean War, which may drag in Japan since the United States is using Japan as the launching place for their air force.
It is really interesting to see Gen growing up and Japan evolving and starting to physically heal as time is passing. Radiation sickness is still pretty prominent in the storytelling, but it is clear that the troubles facing Gen and his loved ones are changing with time. Nakazawa continues to reintroduce secondary characters from earlier in the series to contribute to the storytelling.

في هذا الجزء يكمل جن كفاحه للعيش هو واخوته المتبقين من القنبلة، والاصدقاء الذي اجتمع بهم اثناء المأساة في هيروشيما بعد مرور مايقرب من خمس سنوات على سقوطها، من خلال استكمال التعليم، والعمل باليد.
ايضًا يتطرق هذا الجزء لبداية الحرب في كوريا وانفصالها إلى دولتين الكوريتين الجنوبية والشمالية، كذلك سطوة امريكا وسيطرتها على كل تفاصيل الحياة في اليابان، واستغلال بعض البشر لأنقاض الحرب لجلب الاموال الطائلة، وجشع الانسان في الاستيلاء ع بيوت العامة التي شيدوها بعد الحربب بأقل الامكانيات وبجهود شخصية حتى يقوموا بهدمها وبيعها باسعار اعلى جالبة لمكاسب اكبر على حساب هؤلاء الناجين من الحرب.
للحرب وجوه بشعة، وبعد الحرب لها وجوه اكثر بشاعة.
كذلك يتطرق هذا الجزء للبحث عن العيش بسلام دون حروب، واختباء كثير من الاعمال السيئة تحت هذا المسمى لأغراض غير انسانية ولا تمت للسلام بصلة وإنما هو فقط الإستغلال والاختباء تحت هذه الشعارات.

It is astonishing to see what lengths people will go to make you hate them.
What seemed to be a war-loving and cynical person, ended up being a war-hating, and relatively kind person, a person who was depressed because he thought he was going to die of radiation poisoning.
The effects of the Atomic bomb were not only physical, but mental too, the depression that comes of knowing your going to die before you were supposed to can change people for the worse, but if you pry deep enough you can find the persons true self.
This is what Gen did, and his compassion for this person who, just before, tried to kill him, is incredibly inspiring and made me rethink some of my actions to others in the past.
Treat everyone with kindness, no mater how they treat you, because even if you think they are bad people you may be wrong and uncover something that you didn't expect

اليابان بعد خمس سنوات من الكارثة في سنة ١٩٥٠..
ويبدأ الجزء الثامن من مانغا جن الحافي بانفصال الكوريتين وحربهما وتأثيراتها على اليابانيين على الصعيد النفسي والمالي من ظهور تجار الموت وفرط الاستغلال وغير ذلك..
في هذا الجزء يتطور الجانب الاجتماعي والاقتصادي والسياسي بشكل أكبر على ضوء الواقع الذي يعيشه جن ومن معه.. تبدأ المظاهرات المناهضة للحرب والداعية للسلم ويرافق ذلك صعود نجم المستفيدين المتاجرين بدماء شعوبهم.. ويتعرف جن على شخصين في مدرسته الإعدادية الأول مدرسه الرافض للحرب الداعي لتطور اليابان بالعلم لا بالقوة.. والثاني أيهارا زميله المريض الذي لن يعيش طويلا رغم إبداعه في كرة القاعدة.. وطبعا يؤثر جن المتفائل في كليهما..
أرى أن هذا الجزء هو الأضعف حتى الآن من سلسلة ناكزاوا كيجي

A saga de Gen se inicia em 1950, cinco anos após a explosão da bomba e o Japão vive o medo de se envolver num novo conflito bélico devido à eclosão da guerra entre as duas Coréias divididas, mesmo estando longe de se recuperar da devastação da segunda guerra.
Também conheceremos a realidade do abuso de drogas, como a poderosa e devastadora metanfetamina, recurso desesperado de algumas pessoas a fim de superar a fome e todo o sofrimento consequentes do conflito.

Five years after the war, Gen's life and adventures continue. Now we are getting into the Korean War, and very specifically, into the people making money off war, the origins of the Cold War and the Nationalism and Government repression.
The Gen saga provides a very interesting lens through which we can explore and learn about the Japanese society and history shortly after the bomb. It pushes for pacifism and resistance to blind authority.
Definitely a classic, it has become one of my favourites.

Setelah orang-orang mencoba bertahan hidup akibat dampak dari pengebomam di Hiroshima, peperangan kembali meletus di semenanjung korea. Hal ini nampaknya ikut mempengaruhi Gen dalam memandang sesuatu.
Rencana penggusuran rumah-rumah yang dibangun susah payah dari sisa-sisa pengeboman demi membangun sebuah 'kota perdamaian' membuat Gen semakin gusar. Pemerintah menutup mata dari apa yang terjadi di lapangan, orang-orang terdampak makin tersisihkan.
Perjuangan belum berakhir. Perang masih terus berjalan, mencoba menginjak-injak harapan yang mulai muncul di permukaan tanah bekas pengebomam.
Rencana penggusuran rumah-rumah yang dibangun susah payah dari sisa-sisa pengeboman demi membangun sebuah 'kota perdamaian' membuat Gen semakin gusar. Pemerintah menutup mata dari apa yang terjadi di lapangan, orang-orang terdampak makin tersisihkan.

Mais um volume que mantém a qualidade da série. Como já é característico, há momentos bastante pesados e emocionantes, contrastando com cenas cômicas que reforçam o tom otimista com o qual Gen encara a vida, apesar de tudo.
Enquanto Gen, Ryuta e as outras crianças sobreviventes precisam lidar com os fantasmas deixados pela bomba atômica, os Estados Unidos seguem ocupando o território japonês, e o Japão entra em guerra com a Coreia, tornando a sobrevivência em Hiroshima ainda mais difícil. Agora adolescente, Gen se vê obrigado a enfrentar a necessidade de conquistar sua própria independência.

Another great volume. Those who roots for the war and use it to get rich will be burned in the darkest places of hell.
What I really love about this book is that no matter how hard and impossible life can gets , he neve gives up. He always take the hits and keep pushing back and moving forward in a way that motivates anyone to keep going no matter how many setbacks they might get. Cause one day the sun will rise again.
