When I tell you this book took me on such a riveting mind blowing journey, that doesn't even begin to describe this book! Easy five stars, no question!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The atmospheric character building was next level, seriously genius. SERIOUSLY!!!!
It gave me such an unsettling and disturbing feeling and yet I couldn't stop reading out of pure and complete desperate need to know what could possibly be awaiting around the next corner from this authors masterful mind.
If you pass on this trust me, you will be missing out! I can totally see this as a movie... as a matter of fact, I NEED this to be a movie!
The 3rd Gift by A.G. Mock 4.5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (rounded up to a 5) Spice: 1.3/5 Cursing: min+ Format/Source: ebook from author and Epoch Thrillers Genres/Tropes: domestic psychological thriller, holiday, twisty Audience: Adult Setting: Charlotte; Gatlinburg Characters: Josh, Ria, Abbey, Marjorie, Fritz, Katarina 👍 short chapters, multi POV, medical/blind rep, service dog rep, twists, well written characters, perfect length 👎 cursing
Description: When Josh and Maria accept an invitation to a wealthy new neighbor's holiday party, they expect champagne and small talk… not a twisted pact that will test their already fractured marriage. Drawn into a game they don’t yet understand, the couple is lured to a remote mountain cabin by three cryptic gifts and the promise of a life-changing opportunity to solve all their problems. The catch? One of them must die... a fact only one of them knows. Trapped by a blizzard on Christmas Eve, each desperate minute brings them closer to a reckoning they won't see coming. Because this was never about the money… But vengeance wrapped in a bow.
My opinion: Mock pens another exciting psychological thriller that is the perfect length (not too short but doesn't drag on either). The short chapters and the multiple POV made for a quick and effortless read. The characters were so well written that I grew very strong feelings towards them. I loved that Ria had medical issues to include diabetes and its many complications and that she handled those symptoms so elegantly. Cheeko, the service dog, was awesome as well. The book was very fast-paced and kept me on my toes wanting to read more. I found the twists to be quite shocking and unexpected. I did not appreciate the cursing in the novel - personal preference. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys very twisty psychological thrillers. #bookstagram #booklovers #epochthrillers #thrillerbooks #booktok #joshandria #twisty #servicedog
It’s almost 1am and I’ve just finished this in one sitting because I genuinely couldn’t stop — I had to know how it ended.
The 3rd Gift is fast, intense, and completely driven by momentum. Short chapters, escalating stakes, and a central premise built around three “gifts” that come with devastating moral consequences. Wealth, health, and a third option that turns everything into a question of sacrifice — not just what you’d choose, but who would pay the price.
At the centre of the story is Josh and Ria, a marriage already under strain, complicated further by infidelity, secrecy, and an imbalance of power that becomes increasingly uncomfortable. Ria’s blindness is handled thoughtfully and plays a meaningful role in the tension, particularly in how trust and dependence are weaponised as the story unfolds.
The Christmas setting shouldn’t work as well as it does, but it adds to the unease. Once the story shifts to a snowed-in cabin, the atmosphere becomes claustrophobic in a way that genuinely reminded me of The Shining — isolated, tense, and quietly menacing.
I didn’t always like the characters (and I don’t think I was meant to), but I was completely invested in the choices they were making and the fallout that followed. The twists come thick and fast toward the end — some I anticipated, others I didn’t — but the execution kept me hooked regardless.
And Cheeko absolutely deserves a mention. A grounding, comforting presence in an otherwise unsettling story, and easily my favourite part of the book.
Dark, bingeable, and very hard to put down — especially if you go in blind and trust the process.
The writing often felt juvenile and inconsistent, jumping between third person and a character’s direct point of view in a way that was distracting rather than intentional. There were also frequent moments where sentences didn’t quite make sense, whether due to missing punctuation or unclear phrasing, which pulled me out of the story more than once. I found myself rereading passages just to understand what was being said.
The excessive use of the word “babe” quickly became irritating, and the way Josh spoke made it difficult to push through at times. The sexual scenes, unfortunately, gave me major ick and didn’t land well for me at all.
Despite being just over 200 pages, the book felt much longer than necessary. Overexplaining certain moments caused the pacing to drag, and this story easily could have been much shorter. I also guessed a couple of the twists fairly early on, though I will say that some of the end reveals did give me a genuine “oh shit” moment that I don’t think many readers will predict.
I didn’t absolutely hate this book, but I also wouldn’t recommend it to a friend. The writing style alone made it hard not to DNF. I also wish I had known about the trigger content beforehand; had I known, I likely wouldn’t have picked this up at all.
Overall, it was… interesting. Not terrible, but not great either. The ending sort of saved it for me, but not enough to bump the rating higher.
Just finished this gem last night and wow, what a perfect little Christmas thriller tied up in a red bow ( and an evergreen sprig! ).
From the first chapter you are drawn in when you are introduced to Josh as he receives a gruesome Christmas “gift” with a cryptic note simply stating “I know it was you”.
From that moment on the momentum of this book is like a rolling log, from the Christmas party that Josh and his disabled wife attend where the offering of the three gifts is made, to the finale at a secluded cabin in the midst of a winter storm, the twists, turns and revelations keep coming!
Just when I thought I had a satisfactory ending to an already diabolically intense roller coaster of a story, Mr. Mock decides to hit us with yet another punch in the face ( as is his style, lol )!
If you’re looking for a quick but intense holiday read to get you through the stress of the season, this one is it! Highly recommend!
I absolutely love when a story has an actual jaw-dropping twist in it and this was definitely that for me! This is one of those story where nothing is as it seems. The story is fast paced and keeps you engaged the entire time. Josh and Ria move to a new neighborhood and accept an invite to a neighbor's holiday party. This party isn't just some normal holiday party though. They end up drawn into a game that puts their fragile, already fractured marriage to the test. They are lured to a cabin by 3 gifts with life changing opportunities but of course, they also come with a price! The story is very layered. I enjoyed the character development and twists that kept coming! This is a definite must read this holiday season. It's one of those you don't want to miss out on. If you read Now Is the Time of Monsters by A.G. Mock, then you know what a ride you're in for!. But if you haven't, what the heck are you waiting for!!
I knew this book would be good, but this was a wowser!! The 3rd Gift by A.G. Mock gives you a psychological Christmas thriller and more. So many surprises throughout it, and the ending, a BIGGER surprise. You will think you know what's going until the 😲 moment! I also loved the short chapters, and multiple POV's! It makes it hard to put it down.
Overview: "Behind every Gift Lies a Secret. Behind ever Secret, a Lie.
When Josh and Maria accept an invitation to an eccentric new neighbor's holiday party, they expect champagne and small talk… not a twisted pact that will test their already fractured marriage.
Drawn into a game they don’t yet understand, the couple is lured to a remote mountain cabin by 3 cryptic gifts and a life-changing opportunity.
The catch? They come at an inconceivable price.
Cut off by a blizzard on Christmas Eve, each minute draws them closer to an unthinkable showdown.
Another amazing book from A.G. Mock! I don't want to give away any spoilers. The 3rd Gift kept my interest from the first sentence until the last. The characters were well developed and the story had a twist I did not see coming. Wow! The book had a little of everything. Mystery, romance, adventure, thrills and chills. The main characters Ria and Josh seem like a normal happily married couple..at first. Then everything explodes in the first chapter. The couple attends a party and that changes everything. It is the beginning of the end for one of them. Ria and Josh are gifted three gifts and finally end up in a mountain cabin during a blizzard. There is no way out and the true relationship between Ria and Josh is revealed. It is horrific, dysfunctional and borderline psychotic! I did not see this coming but the ending blew my mind.
A must read. I was on the edge of my seat through the whole book. Josh and Ria getting ready to celebrate their 2nd anniversary in a cabin in the woods. The weekend trip was the 3rd gift given to them by a new neighbor where they just moved. This was the 3rd and finale gift given to them by the neighbor. Just like the 3 Wise Men. The first gift was wealth, the second was health and the third was the weekend trip to the cabin. But the weekend doesn't go as planned or does it. This book has everything you could want in a thriller, lies, deceit, torture, murder and surprises around every corner. Pour Ria, blind and diabetic. Should you feel sorry for her? Josh, trying to be a good husband, especially after the infidelity..... but is he. This is a great page turner. If you walk away from reading it you can't wait to get back to it to see what happens next.
A.G. Mock is a master of the modern thriller, and The 3rd Gift is proof. This is a chilling, perfectly paced novel that takes the cheerful setting of Christmas and twists it into something truly sinister. If you’re looking for a book to read by the fire that will make you look twice at every shadow, this is it.
The story is ingeniously plotted. It opens with an immediate hook, and the tension never eases up. Mock uses the isolation and tradition of the holiday season to great effect, building a sense of dread that is both palpable and compelling. It’s one of those books that you keep telling yourself, "just one more chapter" until the book is gone.
The 3rd Gift is holiday reading for people who prefer their snow with a side of suspicion. It's sharp, clever, and absolutely deserves its 5-star rating. Highly, highly recommend!
This is a perfect thriller for you or anyone this Holoday Season. We follow Maria and Josh this Christmas as they move into a new neighborhood to try to get away from and fix some life and marital issues. They have some interesting new neighbors and some Josh has some very Interesting choices to make when a new neighbor propositions him with her version of the 3 gifts of the Magi representing wealth, health, and well…death. The choices seem quite easy to Josh. Or so he thinks. I promise. You can’t get to Amazon fast enough to get this on your shelf. But you are in luck. Launch day is November 25th. Plenty of time to preorder. You won’t be disappointed.
This book took me on a roller coaster ride, in a good way of course, because I didn’t want to get off.
There were lies, infidelity, deception and so much more! You will think twice about holiday parties or parties in general. This is a holiday book you don’t want to miss, plus the proceeds are going to charity.
I was totally blown away at the ending and was not prepared for it. It’s one of those books that aren’t that long, but stay on your mind for a long time.
✨ The suspense in this book is absolutely off the charts! I found myself audibly gasping at the twists—like full-on jaw-drop moments that had me flipping pages faster than I could breathe. 😱📚
With the holidays coming up, this is the perfect book to cozy up with. Whether you’re curled under a blanket with hot cocoa or hiding from family drama (no judgment 😂), this thriller will keep you completely hooked from beginning to end.
Well, I certainly didn’t expect some of this twists and turns. Especially the one at the very end.
Imagine being blind and relying on your husband to help guide you through life. That was Ria’s life after losing her site to type 1 diabetes. Her and Josh have been married for two years when they attend a party. Josh is proposition with three gifts that’s are life changing but they come at a large sacrifice. Does he accept them?
This page turner will keep you guessing until the last page.
A.G. Mock’s The Third Gift doesn’t just tell a story…it detonates one! Every chapter hits like a shockwave, pulling you deeper into its dark, mesmerizing world until you’re breathless, goose-bumped, and absolutely convinced you’ve just witnessed a master at work. It doesn’t just whisper its story; IT ROARS IT! It grabs you by the spine, and drags you through a cinematic, heart-pounding ride you will NOT recover from.
OMG this book only took me a couple of days. You can read it in one this book had my head all messed up in a good way lol even though it’s a Christmas themed book you don’t have to just read it on Christmas, but it begins at a neighborhood Christmas party were even the HOA members were invited so you know right then and there things are going to pop off and it does, but you’ve got to read it to believe it because you would never imagine this ever
I was not ready for this book! It's my first by A.G. Mock and it was perfect - dark, intense, and full of deception. Josh and Ria have a lot of issues in their marriage, but in a new town with new opportunities they're hoping to rekindle the love they once had. When a proposition presents itself, it alters the course of their plans.
With quick chapters and an action packed plot I found it hard to stop reading and often read until I dropped my book at night. Highly recommend.
This book was ..just wow!! It’s my first book by this author and I’m hooked!! Christmas or not, this is a must read! It’s the perfect suspense, horror. You think you know, and you may know a little, but you really have absolutely no clue!! There was even a tiny bit of spice.
The characters, Ria and Josh move to try to get on a better path and save their marriage, when Josh is offered a new twist, but at what price.
Not going to lie, I went through so many emotions reading this. I even found myself holding my breath and tearing up a few times. I honestly would love to see this turned into a movie! I would be the first to buy tickets.
A.G. Mock turns a holiday party into a nightmare wrapped in red ribbons and razor sharp secrets. Twists hit like snowballs to the face, loyalties shift constantly, and a failing marriage, three unsettling gifts, and a blizzard that seems downright malicious make this a holiday thriller you won’t forget. Perfect for anyone who likes their festive cheer with a wicked grin.
This story puts you in a chokehold with the very first sentence and keeps you on lock down until the last word. I can't count the times that I caught myself audibly gasping while reading this. I sat up so late reading this that I literally had trouble keeping my eyes open. I didn't want to stop reading and go to sleep. I wanted to know what happened next sooo bad!
Trust me, you will NEVER guess what comes next so done even try! Just enjoy the ride. This book is so good that you might have to read it twice!
