The Calm & Connected Parent: An Attachment-First Guide to Raising Resilient Kids in the Age of Screens and AI

Rate this book
Tired of the cycle- ask, repeat, yell, regret? You’re not alone. With constant pings, packed schedules, and big feelings, parenting today can feel impossible.

Written by Todd Sarner, MFT, psychotherapist, parenting coach, and founder of Transformative Parenting, this warm, science-based guide draws from over two decades of clinical experience and mentorship with attachment pioneer Dr. Gordon Neufeld, where Sarner also served as a former Faculty Member of the Neufeld Institute.

The core your child doesn’t need perfect parents, they need to feel genuinely connected to you in the moments that matter most. When that connection is secure, cooperation, resilience, and healthy maturity naturally follow.

Inside, you’ll learn how

• Create emotional safety and secure attachment your child can truly rely on the foundation for everything else

• Navigate screens and AI without losing connection or your authority as their guide

• Lead with calm confidence using firm, warm boundaries that teach rather than punish

• Turn defiance and meltdowns into opportunities for trust, growth, and real skills

• Repair without shame when things go wrong (because they will)

• Build three essential capacities in your child creativity, resilience, and wisdom through daily rhythms, not forced outcomes

This isn’t permissive “anything goes,” and it isn’t authoritarian control. It’s the middle path of attachment-first leadership steady, warm, and clear. The kind of parenting that brings less chaos, more cooperation, and a home that feels safe and sane again.

Most parenting advice treats symptoms. This book strengthens the foundation so discipline, screen boundaries, and emotional regulation flow naturally from secure connection, not compliance tactics.

Lead with love. Guide with confidence. Raise kids who can think, feel, and choose well even in the digital age.

I found this book super helpful in teaching me a simple, kind, loving way to parent. I read a chapter a day and looked forward to the times I got to read and learn. The author's approach was clear and doable. I finished each chapter with more grace for my kids and their behaviors. I learned methods to help them develop the tools they need to succeed in the future.

What Atomic Habits did for the way I think about building habits, I have a feeling The Calm and Connected Parent by Todd Sarner is going to do for the way I approach parenting. That is not a comparison I make lightly.

A lot of the advice here reflects things I already do, which was both reassuring and a genuine confidence boost. But even with that, I still came away with an abundance of practical, actionable ideas that I am already putting into practice. Sarner writes with clarity and warmth, and the advice never feels preachy or unattainable. It meets you where you are.

This is a book I will come back to repeatedly. The kind you keep on the shelf not as a keepsake but as a working reference, something to dip into as your children grow and new challenges appear.

My one complaint is almost embarrassingly nitpicky, but here it is: the resources section at the back mentions a weekly newsletter on the author's website. Reader, there is no weekly newsletter. I searched thoroughly and found nothing but links to the book and a free masterclass. For a book this good it barely registers, but it did leave me slightly deflated when I was ready to sign up.

Four and three quarter stars. Hugely recommended, especially for parents looking for something genuinely practical rather than just reassuring.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and Attachment Solutions Press for my copy.

I really appreciated this parenting book. It was practical, clear, and easy to apply in real life, which is exactly what I needed. Instead of overwhelming theory, it focuses on simple ideas that actually make a difference in everyday situations with kids.

What stood out most to me was how realistic the advice felt. The author understands that parenting isn’t perfect and offers solutions that are doable, even on busy or stressful days. I found myself reflecting on my own approach and making small changes that already feel helpful.

The tone was supportive without being preachy, which I liked. It felt more like guidance than criticism, and that made it easier to stay open to the ideas.

Overall, a very useful read that I would recommend to any parent looking for practical strategies and a bit more confidence in their day-to-day parenting.

I have received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Released on November 19th, and wow this one was inspiring

If you’re a parent who’s trying to juggle big feelings (you or kids), longing for more presence, or wanting practical strategies that actually fit real life, this is a must-read.

What I loved most: it doesn’t pretend parenting is perfect or peaceful all the time. This books gives you tools to slow down, regulate, and respond. You become the parent you want to be and there will still be trying or challenging days

It’s gentle, relatable stating good points that stick with you long after you finish the book.

A Refreshing Middle Ground in Parenting – What I loved most about this book is how it avoids extremes. It’s not permissive, and it’s not controlling—it’s thoughtful and balanced. Sarner explains why connection matters before discipline ever works, and that insight alone was eye-opening. The sections on repair after mistakes felt especially humane. Parenting doesn’t suddenly become perfect, but it becomes calmer. This is a great read for parents who want long-term emotional strength for their kids, not just short-term obedience.

Less Yelling, More Understanding – This book met me exactly where I am as a parent—overwhelmed and trying my best. Sarner doesn’t shame you for mistakes; instead, he shows how to repair and reconnect. That alone makes this book stand out. The emphasis on emotional safety really shifted how I respond to meltdowns. It’s not a quick fix, but it’s a meaningful one. If you want a calmer household and a stronger bond with your child, this guide is worth reading.

This book provides a practical, attachment-based approach to parenting that focuses on connecting with our children as the foundation for our relationship. It helps parents gain skills to raise resilient children, while also providing parents with permission and grace to take time for ourselves and remind ourselves that we are humans who are going to make mistakes; and that’s okay.
