51 books70 followersAlthough I was born on a Yorkshire farm and went to school there I have lived most of my adult life in Scotland, UK. I am a widow now but my husband was a dairy farmer. My son continues farming and my younger daughter has a farm ice cream parlour. They both live near to me so they keep me up to date with life and changing trends and I enjoy my grandchildren’s company.
I did not start writing until my elder daughter went to university. I entered a Woman’s Weekly competition and I was fortunate when Lynda O'Byrne, the fiction editor, wrote to tell me she had liked my entry and suggested I finish it and send it to publisher Robert Hale. It was too long for their Rainbow Romance format but I made the changes suggested and it was published under the name Lynn Granger. Three more followed. I shall always be grateful for the early encouragement and patience I received at that time.
The purchase of an Amstrad computer for the farm accounts was a boon. It had a word processor - a great improvement on my typing and Tippex. This enabled me to write the four longer sagas in the Fairlyden series which starts around 1850 and follows the generations to the end of the First World War. My husband helped with research of farming history for these, delving into his collection of Scottish Farmer Albums going back to 1900. I wish I had listened to more of the stories from my grandparents.
Since winning the RNA Elizabeth Goudge Trophy in 2000 I have written eleven more sagas, all with Scottish settings.

This was a nice, clean romance about fresh starts and meeting your soulmate, with likeable characters and a lovely setting of a Scottish dairy farm. The only issue I had was with the writing style; I just couldn't feel the sparks between the MCs and at times it felt like they were reading the dialogues instead of having a conversation.

Roxanne Carr get a job as a companion to elderly Amynta Baxter in Scotland .First meeting with Amy son Ciaran was a little tense,but soon Roxi wins the hearts of Baxter family.
It was sweet and heartwarming romace.I liked the fact that community get together in the time of need,neighbor helps neighbor,this found family it's exacly what Roxie needed.Full of hope and love this book leave me with a warm feeling.

Roxanne Carr was raised on a pedigree dairy farm in Debyshire in the English Midlands. She loves working with her father and gives up her chance at university to help run the farm after the death of her mother. Roxie is never happier than when she is helping to build up the pedigree herd but is heartbroken after the accidental and tragic death of her father. Her brother Tommy inherits the farm, and his new wife makes it clear that Roxie is no longer welcome.
Roxie applies for a job advertised for a helper-cum-companion to an elderly lady in a small farming community in Scotland. She is successful and with little time to lose travels up just with a few belongings and a heavy heart.
Things get off to a sticky start when she is stuck for hours in a traffic jam following a terrible car crash, and she arrives several hours late. As if it couldn't get worse, she gets lost and finds herself at the wrong address, stuck behind a tractor and being berated by an irate farmer. Almost in tears, she arrives at her new employers nearby house to find a surprisingly sprightly old lady who welcomes her warmly. Her employer, Amynta Baxter, is actually the mother of the grumpy young farmer, Ciaren. As time goes by, Roxie and Ciaren begin to see each other differently, and a bond begins to form around their common love for dairy farming.

From the very first page, this story settled around me like a comfort I didn’t realise I needed. The opening felt so natural — almost as if I’d slipped into the passenger seat beside Roxie as she headed north towards her new life in the south of Scotland. I warmed to her instantly. There’s something about her determination, her kindness, and her quiet hope for a fresh start that made me root for her straight away. She’s one of those characters who feels real from the moment she appears on the page: capable, grounded, and still carrying the kind of hurt that so many of us recognise.
And then there’s Ciaran. I had a feeling from the start that there was more to him than his first impression. I loved the way he was introduced — prickly on the surface, yet you can feel there’s far more to him than the situation allows you to see early on. Watching his true nature reveal itself, layer by layer, each one softer than the last, was one of my favourite parts of the book. The way these two gradually come to understand each other felt honest and believable, shaped by the everyday rhythms of farm life and the quiet moments in between. The author handled it with a tenderness that never felt rushed or forced.
One of the things that really stood out for me was the farming element woven through the story. As someone who enjoys reading about farming, I absolutely loved how genuine and grounded these parts felt. It added a richness to the setting and made the whole book feel even more real, rooted in the community and the landscape.
Overall, this is a beautifully descriptive, heartfelt story about fresh starts, emotional healing, and finding genuine connection in unexpected places. I loved the characters, I loved the setting, and I loved the gentle warmth that runs through every chapter. It left me with that satisfied sigh you get after spending time with characters you genuinely care about.

What a charming book this is. There is nothing pretentious about it - this is a love story pure and simple, and a beautifully written one at that. It's old-fashioned, slow-burn pace makes it a comforting, heartwarming read. Trying to make a new start in life, Roxie takes on a job as a companion to good natured Amy Baxter. The two get on wonderfully, even with Amy's crotchety son Ciaran on the scene. Romance is the last thing on Roxie's mind - but love has a way of sneaking up when you least expect it ...
For me, Amy stole the show - she's absolutely delightful and I can just picture her. But I love how all the main characters are so well drawn and rounded, and I appreciated that this novel doesn't follow the over-used plot thread of last minute misunderstandings and drama. The problems are overcome by kindness and understanding.
There's no huge earth-shattering plot here, just a gentle story. For me there is a bit too much detail on farming life, but that's a personal preference. In the context of the story it makes perfect sense. Reading this is like sitting beside a babbling brook on a sunny day - soothing and a balm to the soul. The perfect escape in the hectic run-up to Christmas. Read and enjoy.

But I love how all the main characters are so well drawn and rounded, and I appreciated that this novel doesn't follow the over-used plot thread of last minute misunderstandings and drama. The problems are overcome by kindness and understanding.
There's no huge earth-shattering plot here, just a gentle story. For me there is a bit too much detail on farming life, but that's a personal preference. In the context of the story it makes perfect sense. Reading this is like sitting beside a babbling brook on a sunny day - soothing and a balm to the soul. I've been so taken with books set in the Scottish Highlands recently and as soon as I spotted this front cover image and title, I just had to give this book a read.
After the death of her father and the loss of her family farm, Roxanne flees to the Highlands and takes a job as companion to the lovely Amynta, hoping to escape and make a fresh start.
Although the job looks like the perfect solution, the reception from Amynta's son, Ciaran, is more than a little frosty!
I adored this book from the start and just knew that this initial frostiness was going to thaw and warm into something a little more given time.
I really felt for Roxie and the whole situation that she ran from.
I can't imagine how hard it was to leave in the first place but grieving on top of that too.
Ciaran on the other hand kept all his emotions hidden away and it was great to see the story unfold and his layers to break down gradually.
The setting was perfect and it was great to see the workings of the farm in this area.
I love the rugged landscape and the wilderness of Scotland but haven't ever read descriptions of working this land.
The writing style had me hooked from the start and I was completely immersed in the wonderfully descriptive storyline and drawn into these characters' lives.
This was such a great first read by this author and I'm really looking forward to reading more books in the near future.

She meets Amy's nephew, Ciaran, who isn't exactly friendly, and feels she didn't exactly have the best start. But Roxie soon realises that in Scotland, she's found a new home, and new friend, and perhaps even something more.
At the beginning, I knew I was going to like the characters and warm to them, even Ciaran. Roxie was a lovely protagonist, and I really liked Amy as a character too. I imagined how it would feel to be in Roxie's shoes, because Amy seemed a lovely person to work for. As I carried on reading, I noticed that while the book felt like an escape, I somehow felt very much at home with the characters.
This was a romantic read that made me smile. It was cosy and heartwarming, but it wasn't sugar-coated. It was also very easy to read, the kind of book that I would curl up with when I just want to relax.

Oh my goodness - what a truly delightful story. Easy to read but full of emotion, friendship, community and family.
Roxanne feels forced off the farm she has helped to establish after the death of her father and the rushed nuptials for her brother Tommy and Gilda-who really was a totally unlikeable character. She certainly duped Tommy in the worse ways.

Roxanne feels forced off the farm she has helped to establish after the death of her father and the rushed nuptials for her brother Tommy and Gilda-who really was a totally unlikeable character. She certainly duped Tommy in the worse ways.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and what a wonderful way to be introduced to her.
When Roxanne Carr flees to Scotland after a personal tragedy, she soon discovers how different things will become as she settles into her new life as companion to Amynta Baxter. Roxanne is a fabulously complex character, with facets of her previous life in Derbyshire slowly being revealed and I loved how these revelations constantly surprise Amy’s son, Cairan, a man who has his own preconceptions of her. The description of the Highlands took me instantly to this incredible part of the country, and although this is a tale of fiction, it was easy to see just how knowledgeable the writer is.
There is so much to love about this story, there’s drama, friendships which become deep and true, and I especially adored Amy. And although there is some sadness, this tale is also about hope and following your heart.

This is a light romance set in the Scottish Lowlands with themes of loss, love, found family, and hope. It is heartwarming throughout and the rugged descriptiveness of the setting is beautiful.
I really felt for Roxie, after a really tough period in her life, she sets off up North, only to come across a tragic road accident, which leads to a frosty reception from her new employers son when she finally makes it to her final destination. It is clear from the off though that once Ciaran defrosts a bit, he and Roxie would get on like a house on fire.
I loved the relationship between Roxie and Amy. It was so heartwarming and just what Roxie needed to heal.
I also enjoyed seeing the familial and friendly relationships playing out between the lesser seen but no less important to the story characters.
I thought the storytelling around the dairy farming was super interesting and great to shine a light on the trials and tribulations of such an important profession.
This is an easy to read story and while it was my first experience of this author I would definitely not let it be my last.

Initially hostile, Ciaran comes first to appreciate and then feel more strongly for Roxie and their relationship gradually develops, as does her caring for Amynta and for helping the family generally.
Later, Roxie’s estranged brother asks her to return to help him with his herd and she needs to decide whether to go back to her old life or remain in the new one.

This was a very sweet, clean romance set in Scotland. The main characters, Roxie and Ciaran, had a bit of a rocky start (you'll get the reference when you read the book!), but soon found themselves drawn to each other. Roxie recently lost her father, so she jumped at the opportunity to take a position as an aide to Ciaran's Mom Amy.
While this story is set in current times, there are some "old-fashioned" situations that the reader finds themselves harkened back to the 50's or so. That doesn't take anything away from the book, but lends some innocence and sweetness to the mix. I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Roxie and Ciaran, and the Scotland locale makes it even better. Warm and cozy romance!

She is caught up in a serious traffic accident on her way and is delayed, she arrives late and is chastised by Amy's son Ciaran , a dairy farmer as was her late father.
Amy and Roxie however form an almost instant friendship, with Amy hoping Roxie and Ciaran can get over that first meeting and become good friends or maybe more?
Over time a friendship and slowly romance blossoms and they learn about each other and their losses that bring them closer.
I loved the way their families and friends blended together despite some differences and bad circumstances.

This was a lovely book it was the story of Roxie who had taken a new job in Scotland after her brother had got married and his new wife made it clear she was no longer welcome on the family farm.
She traveled up there to discover that the people were warm and friendly finding herself attracted to the handsome son himself a farmer.
All the,characters were well drawn and nice apart from her brothers wife Gilda who turned out to be not the,women he brother thought she was but
It was a very nice story and everyone was happy at the end

Perfectly Delightful!
I enjoyed reading this wonderfully charming story. The characters were so vividly described that you wanted to become absorbed in their lives and their story. I love books with a true human element along with descriptions of everyday life. A romantic love story, family that comes together to deal with and overcome whatever life throws at them. A very wise lady that understands just what is required to keep everything on an even keel. Truly delightful. I enjoyed every word.

After the death of her father, Roxie accepts a job as a companion for an older woman in Scotland. From the get-go, Roxie has a run in with the woman’s son. Gradually, however, she proves her worth to everyone around her.
I enjoyed this story immensely. Roxie and Ciaran were well-written, and their behaviour was both mature and intelligent. The story was engaging, and I found myself very quickly invested in the couple’s relationship.

This is the first book that I have read by the author and I will definitely be reading more by them. This was such a beautiful, heartfelt novel. From the very first page the author's writing had me hooked and I was swept along in the story with the characters. I loved the place settings in the story and there was a great cast of characters. I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading more by the author.

A lovely sweet book that is gentle in its entirety. Read it in 24 hours! Though her story has foundations of tragedy and grief, the book is a quiet read. It made a refreshing change from books filled with spice and unnecessary drama.
An enjoyable love story with very heart warming characters. The kind of Scottish love story I would certainly love for myself… anyone Scottish bachelors willing to try it?

Oh my goodness if a book could give you a cosy blanket and a big hug this would be it.
I was fully invested straight from the beginning, lovely Roxie and grumpy Ciaran stole my heart, then add in all the side characters and that was me lost for the next few hours reading this sweet and beautiful love story, based in the gorgeous Scottish setting.
The book cover drew me to the book first off but the writing and characters really sell this story.

I should preface my review with his statement. She had me at Scotland!
This was an enjoyable read, and the author knows her stuff when it comes to farming.
I thought the couple fell in love too quickly. Yes, love at first sight does happen. The only friction between them was at the beginning of the book.
I loved Roxanne (Roxie) and Ciaran’s mother, Amy. They were believable and down-to-earth folk. I’ll look for more books by Gwen Kirkwood, because she’s an excellent author.

This is a lovely, cosy romantic read about two people, with common interests, finding each other. It is set in the farming community and is a slow burner but the pace soon picks up for Roxanne as she discovers new feelings for Ciaran. A nice, feel good love story set in the beautiful Scottish Borders. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

New author for me, I've hit gold!
I had not read this authors works before but I'm a fan! Everything about this book was believable, the story line, the characters and being transported to Scotland! It is such a well written story that draws you in and you can't stop reading... read it in one day!

3.5 stars, what a sweet story. I loved all of the characters and how charming the book was overall. I was rooting for everyone, laughed and teared up at parts. Loved the Scotland setting. Highly recommend this one! Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for the ARC.
