Lying to the Boss

Rate this book
Sleeping with the boss was a mistake. Wanting him again is worse.

Tage
I moved across the country with nothing left to lose—no boyfriend, no money, no confidence.
One reckless night at a bar, I let a stranger pull me out of my own head.
He was commanding, gorgeous, and exactly the kind of mistake I needed to make.
Then I walked into my interview… and he was behind the desk.
It's fine. It'll all be fine. I'm good at pretending, right?
But Lane Anderson won’t let me forget that night no matter how much I plead for him to stop.

Lane
I’m good at one-and-done.
Handle the heat, walk away, no attachments. It’s never been difficult—until him.
Tage shouldn’t matter. But I can't forget what we did.
And now he’s here, in my office, pretending we’re strangers… and I can’t get enough.
I’m not the playful type, but with him? I want to tease. Push. See how far I can go—inside and outside the office.
I’m a master at getting my way and staying in control.
But none of it is working on him.
And it's driving me crazy.

One night stand fail

Tage is new to Chicago and decided to go out. He has a great night with an older guy the night before his interview. Imagine his surprise when the person he hooked up with turns out to be the one needing a personal assistant.

Lane doesn't do attachments. One night and done. Then his one night stand walks in interviewing for his personal assistant job.

I loved the banter between these two. Tage was determined to be professional and forget the night they spent together. Except Lane is persistent and impossible to forget. I loved the push and pull as they tried to decide if they should fight or embrace what they both wanted.

Tage is uncomfortable around people with money. Lane is determined to break through whatever is holding him back. I loved the way Lane never flaunted his wealth just used it. He earned it so why not spoil the man he can't forget.

Short and spicy one night stand to office romance to so much more.

It’s been a while since I read a MM story and this was an excellent book to get back into it.

I absolutely loved the two main characters Lane and Tage. They are both wary about letting anyone into their lives.

When I read this I thought the ending was quite rushed but now as I’ve had time to think I believe this was the perfect ending to their story.

Lying to the Boss is part of the Business & Pleasure shared world. Each book can be read as a stand-alone. I can’t wait to read more in this shared world.

And Tage and me? We love each other like we were just meant to be.
^ Page 188.

I have got to stop allowing myself to read novellas, they're not that interesting. The plot is always rushed too!

The men have a one night stand before Tage ends up walking into Lane's office the next day for an interview. Lane makes hints about seeing Tage again while Tage is rude to him and can't even hold a conversation properly. They then go away on a business trip so of course they have sex before deciding they're gonna try be together. They spend a weekend together, Lane gets into an accident, 3 months skip, 2 months skip, the end.

I get it's 188 pages but was there a need to rush the ending? It's a little funny because usually with this author I find that their books are too long. I blame the novella, they don't tend to work well for me.

If anyone happens to read this (I doubt it), I only read this one because I spent 4 hours searching for a book to read and the blurb made it sound interesting.

Speaking of blurbs? Fix it. The kindle and the book, his name is Lane Monroe but on the Goodreads blurb it's Lane Anderson.

As for my earlier comment on Tage being rude, Lane takes him to dinner and he's trying to get to know him. Tage can't even talk properly or say more than 2 words per sentence. He's pissed that Lane has money, end of story.

I'm not even sure why Tage hates rich people for. His parents were clearly neglectful and couldn't spend longer than 5 mins with him. But otherwise?

But yeah, I think I need to leave novellas for a long time (potentially forever).

Snappy banter, past baggage, and a third-act explosion that completely delivers!

Tage breaks up with his man, packs up his entire life in Boston, and flees to Chicago completely skint and with his self-belief in absolute tatters. He decides to have a wild, no-strings one-night stand at a local pub just to escape his own head for a bit, completely falling for a gorgeous, commanding fella. The absolute shock comes Monday morning when Tage walks into his make-or-break job interview, sits down, and looks up only to realise the man behind the executive desk is the exact same bloke from the bar: Lane Monroe, the cocky billionaire CEO. Tage scrambles to keep things strictly professional and pretend they are complete strangers, but Lane refuses to let the memories drop, turning the workplace into an absolute pressure cooker of forbidden tension.

I thoroughly enjoyed the snappy banter and the sharp friction between them, especially how Tage refuses to let Lane throw his immense wealth around, practically hating it whenever the billionaire tries spending a single quid on him. The pacing delivers a fast, satisfying contemporary burn that avoids lagging, keeping you hooked as Lane drops his smooth, arrogant exterior to show he genuinely cares about the lad. Tage acts slightly too defensive about his past secrets at times, when you just want them to sort it out, but his heavy emotional baggage makes the stubbornness understandable. It is a properly high-heat, high-chemistry office dynamic that balances the billionaire age-gap trope without turning clinical or dull.

This quick M/M romance absolutely delivers if you are after a sharp, entertaining workplace story featuring a truly charming billionaire who falls incredibly hard. It is perfect for readers who love high-tension bar encounters turning into forced office proximity.

Short and spicy, although way too easy but enjoyable enough and the epilogue was very cute. I wish we got more insight into their backgrounds though rather than the snippets here and there.

- No OP drama
- No third act breakup
- HEA

Oops. I accidentally slept with the new boss. Now I have to pretend I don’t know him. Spoiler, it does NOT go fine. 😏🔥

Tage moves across the country to hit reset, no money, no plan, no confidence. One reckless night in a bar with a gorgeous, commanding stranger feels like exactly the kind of mistake he needed. until he walks into his interview the next morning and Lane Anderson is sitting behind the desk. Awkward? Try catastrophic. Now they’re stuck, Tage trying desperately to play it cool and act like strangers, Lane absolutely refusing to let him forget a single second of that night.

This is workplace tension turned all the way up. Lane lives for one and done, no attachments, total control, until Tage walks in and completely unravels every single rule he lives by. The bickering, the teasing, the stolen glances across the desk! Chef’s kiss. Lane loves pushing his buttons; Tage is equal parts flustered and furious, and so, so into it. The power play is delicious, the banter is sharp, and the chemistry is so hot it should come with a workplace safety warning.

What starts as a secret they’re both trying to keep quickly becomes something neither of them can walk away from, and watching them drop the act and finally admit they’re in too deep! Perfection. It’s cheeky, steamy, packed with that delicious “we shouldn’t be doing this” tension, and so much fun from start to finish.

If you love boss/employee, one night stand to more, and two stubborn men who try so hard to resist each other and fail spectacularly, this is it! 🖤🔥

This book this book was absolutely captivating and such an endearing read. I was hooked from page one. I read it far quicker than I should probably admit out loud. Tage is so real and relatable. My heart broke more than once for him. And I honestly just wanted to wrap him in a hug and tell him it’s okay to want love and support. And getting that doesn’t make you dependent or weak. Lane despite being filthy rich is such a grounded and genuinely good individual. He dotes on Tage, or tried is generous with everyone. Tage and Lane were so intriguing together. I couldn’t get enough of their banter or playful interactions. The way they connect and bond had my heart melting. Their story is so sweet and filled with heat. It was amazing. UNTIL YOU SHATTERED MY HEART INTO A MILLION TINY LITTLE PIECES!!!! Oh my freaking lord I was gripping this book so tightly towards the end I thought I would crack my screen. Thank you sweet deities above for that turn in the last few chapters. Cause I was wrecked for a hot minute. But honestly that ending made all the hurt and confusion and devastation and pain 100% worth it. I would gladly take that on again for the way their story wrapped up. It was exactly what I wanted for them and everything they deserved. If it hadn’t have gone that way I may have thrown the book. But all is safe and well.

Tage moved across the country to start a fresh life for himself away from the past he didn’t want to be apart of anymore. He wanted to be able to stand on his two feet and not have the weight of the world around him on his shoulders just because of his upbringing. He wanted to know who he was on his own to feet and find his happy place. Lane is a business owner that gets what he wants and does the finances to make things happen. After one night together they both get the shock of Tage showing up to interview for a new job. After the interview, both of their worlds were turned upside down. Lane was ready to push buttons to see how far he could take Tage because he’s all he can think about but Tage’s walls took some time to break down. This is a very quiet story that keeps you feeling like their feelings are very hot and the walls keep you on the edge of your seat until you really find out Tage’s why. Fast paced novella.

This book is part of the Business & Pleasure series. I believe there will be 4 books in total (but don’t quote me on that). Each book can be read as a stand-alone. I love that because if I miss a book, I don’t feel like I missed parts of the story.
This story captured my heart. The story was so beautifully written. It was sweet and sad at the same time. I loved seeing how the situationship developed between the MMCs. Witnessing how they deal with each other and the outside world. Breaking down self-imposed barriers to explore what might be. This was a beautiful love story.
Thank you, Penny Fox, for this sweet, romantic and steamy story. It was truly an amazing read. I have recently been introduced to your books and I have to say I am loving what I have read so far! I look forward to reading more of your works of art!!

Lane is a millionaire CEO and hooks up with Tage in a bar. The next day, he hires Tage as his personal assistant. Tage tries to be professional and super efficient but Lane pushes and pursues him constantly, teasing but also agreeing it was a one night stand. Lane is prideful, throws his money around and goads Tage all the time yet Tage and he are fire together. I loved this couple! Lane really grows on you and only wants to be with and take care of Tage. Tage has his reasons, wants to be independent but really loves Lane and doesn't care about his money. It's steamy and also sweet. I received a copy of this and this is my voluntary opinion.

I enjoyed Penny Fox’s newest book, Lying to the Boss. This one had a slightly different feel from her other books, but I still really liked it. Tage and Lane’s story starts with a chance encounter that becomes complicated when Tage discovers the stranger from last night is now his new boss. I enjoyed watching their relationship develop as Lane struggles with wanting more than he usually allows himself, while Tage adjusts to his new job and relishes his newfound independence and ability to take care of himself. There’s plenty of chemistry between them, and I liked seeing Lane enjoy pushing Tage’s buttons. Overall, this was another enjoyable read from Penny Fox.

Short, quick read. This is a romance between a millionaire CEO and his new assistant.

Tage comes to Chicago, desperate to be on his own and needs a new job. His interview for personal office assistant to the CEO just happens to be his one night stand from the night before. He gets the job anyway and spends the rest of the book figuring out that Lane (CEO) is not a bad person because he has money, and that they are really good together.

Medium spice. Most of the side characters don't have much to do with the story line - this book is pretty much just about Tage and Lane.

Tage and and Lane are so perfect together! I loved this story. A one night stand to a new career and falling in love. This book was so fun to read. I enjoyed how Lane teased Tage. Tage tried his best to fight his attraction based on trying to make it on his own and not being handed something to him from someone with money.

The characters, the story, everything was great! The author is a one click for me! I love all that she writes! So much heart felt emotions in her writing that I can’t get enough!

Lying to the Boss is about Tage and Lane. They meet at a bar without knowing each other, and they end up spending the night together. Tage is new to Chicago and is trying to find a job. After his one-night stand with a mysterious man, he goes to a job interview, only to discover that his interviewer is the same man he slept with..

This was a really good story, I liked both of the characters.

This is a part of the Business & Pleasure series, but can read as a standalone.

Lying To The Boss is part of the Business & Pleasure Series.

Lane and Tage have intense chemistry together. I loved Lane in this story. He seems to be a one and done kind of person, but there is something about Tage that keeps him coming back and wanting more. Tage tries to keep his distance, as Lane is now his new boss. However, there is something about Lane that keeps Tage coming back. Loved these two together.

I loved the chemistry and banter between Tage and Lane. Meeting at a bar, both only wanted one night. So when Tage shows up for his interview, he's surprised Lane is the CEO. Tage wants to forget about their night but Lane can't, something keeps drawing him to Tage. Tage is secretive about his life and why he moved from Boston to Chicago. He hates Lane spending money on him. Lane shows him that he's more than a cocky billionaire, that Lane truly just wants to be with him.

What happens when your one night stand turns out to be your new boss? Tage is starting over, including a new job. But after he learns his one night stand is now his new boss after he shows up for his interview, things are about to get messy. Lane strives on control and no strings attached. And now his new employee is causing him to lose both of those things. The story has so much angst and tension, teasing and banter. First book in the Business and Pleasure shared world. Highly recommend.

I loved Tage and Lane! The interactions between the two were so much fun. Tage is a stubborn, witty and strong guy and it was so much fun watching him get the upper hand and try to resist Lane. The scene when they meet for the second time had me cackling. I was solidly rooting for Lane and his advances but the slow burn of Tage's resistance was so much fun. These two had so much chemistry and this story was so much fun to read!

ARC Review

I really devoured this boss, Age-Gap, workplace romance. Lane and Tage's story caught my attention from the beginning and I couldn't help but finished this in one sitting. Their story was fast paced, witty dialogue, steamy scenes, great and relatable characters I found myself really liking. As their storyline unfolds I was flipping those pages to find out what else dilemmas poor Tage would have to sort out...🤭highly recommend this book!!

A short, concise, and fast-paced story.

It is a shame that the supporting characters play such a minor, insignificant role; I think that could have added more depth to the story.

cute

This was a sweet and cute novella. The troupe of boss/employee is in it but there is no drama because of it. There are a decent amount of spice scenes but overall the story is well done with only a bit of drama.

Tage moved to a new town with the hopes of a fresh start. Looking for a job was top priority until Tage meets Lane in a bar. After an amazing one night stand, or so he thought, Tage goes to a job interview the next morning and comes face to face with Lane.

Trying to keep it professional doesn’t last long because these two just can’t stay away from one another.

This is a quick read with instant attraction and lots of snark. Has a little mystery about Tage, that we learn more about towards the end.

Penny Fox, darling, at this point I think you're personally responsible for my ever-growing obsession with MM romance. And honestly? I'm not even remotely interested in recovery.

Part of the Business & Pleasure shared universe, Lying to the Boss is another delicious reminder of why I keep coming back to this author. She takes familiar tropes, sprinkles them with her signature brand of spice, and somehow manages to deliver a story that feels wonderfully fresh and emotionally satisfying. The woman knows her audience, and she clearly has no intention of letting us go anytime soon.

What caught me off guard was just how much this story tugged at my heartstrings. Beneath the heat and the romantic tension lies a tender, bittersweet love story about two men navigating a connection that becomes increasingly difficult to dismiss. Watching their situationship evolve, seeing them wrestle with their own carefully constructed barriers, and witnessing them confront the expectations of the world around them made their journey all the more rewarding.

There is sweetness here, but also vulnerability and a touch of sadness that gives the romance real depth. The emotional progression feels natural, making every step forward and every moment of hesitation matter.

Penny has once again found that delicious balance between chemistry, smut, and genuine emotional connection. Because let's be honest, spice is wonderful, but when an author makes you care deeply about the people getting naked, that's when the magic happens.

Another gorgeous addition to the Business & Pleasure universe, and another reason Penny Fox remains firmly on my must-read list.
