Seldom do I find a book that I cannot put down. Still was one of those books. This is a debut novel by Susan Jacobs Dehler. It follows the lives of three women in the Midwest during three different decades. The story is so well written and the author’s research is so very apparent in her descriptions of life, occupations and hardships. Women’s issues are particularly highlighted, but men’s are not slighted. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but wanted more when it ended.
Not often have I encountered a narrative so detailed, so descriptive, so flowing, so authentic, as this one. This is the story of a woman who has never quite known how she fits into the world, but after a tragic event in her community, begins a transformational journey. Going forward and backward in history, the time line unfolds around Mildred and the characters Cora and Jessy, who are bound up in her story. The settings include rural Kansas and the farms, factories, and coal mines of small-town Indiana. I will be reading this one again and hoping for a second novel by this very talented writer.
