What Could Go Wrong?

Rate this book
After a disastrous one-night stand, a last-minute destination wedding seems like the perfect escape. Until she sees the sleeping arrangements…

Wedding photographer Mira Maxwell thought hooking up with Hudson Hayes—the charming bartender who’s been making her laugh for weeks—was the perfect escape from her imploding career. But when she wakes up in the morning, she discovers he isn’t quite as strings-free as he appeared…

Desperate to get away, Mira accepts a last-minute invitation to shoot a friend’s wedding in the Grand Tetons. But Hudson is one of the guests. And to make it even more awkward? She has to share a room with him…and his girlfriend.

Hudson thought dealing with his clingy ex-girlfriend would be the worst part of his stepbrother’s wedding. But after Mira turns up in his room, even disastrous boat trips, bear spray incidents, and escalating family drama can’t hold a candle to his biggest proving himself to Mira.

At a wedding where everything’s gone wrong, the question is: can anything go right?

A rollicking romcom of misunderstandings, mishaps and emotional revelations, this debut is perfect for fans of Meghan Quinn, Christina Lauren and Emily Henry.

A North Carolina native, Jessica Fowler fell in love with storytelling from a young age, from writing ghost stories in historic cemeteries, devouring gritty YA novels faster than she could buy them, and watching every indie movie she could get her hands on. After earning degrees in Creative Writing and Film Studies from NC State University, she began writing romantic comedies inspired by her favorite vacations.

Jessica lives in Raleigh with her two supervillain dogs, her bio-chemist partner, and an exorbitant amount of leather jackets. When she’s not shooting weddings for her photography business, Three Region, she’s probably sipping a mocktail at one of her favorite dive bars or hanging at the library.

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC

I am literally never going to shut up about this book. I could not physically put it down from the moment I started reading. This is one of, if not the best book I have read so far this year. What Could Go Wrong? Absolutely everything. This book has it ALL. All of the characters were so well written, the storyline never once felt like it was dragging, the descriptions of where they are were perfect. I will be reading anything and everything else I can from this author.

Jei reikėtų apibūdinti knygą vienu tropu, tai būtų: miscommunication on steroids.

Pradžioje man net patiko.

Vienas sakinys. Ir staiga „aš pasikeičiau“. Sir, that’s not how character development works.

What Could Go Wrong by Jessica Fowler
Contemporary romance, romantic comedy.
Mira Maxwell accepts a friend’s last minute begging for Mira’s professional expertise, and gets a surprise reconnect with one-night stand gone wrong. A horrible review has her rethinking her career choices, but Hudson Hayes is firmly in her corner, over and over.
A destination wedding in the wilderness instead of an island beach. What could go wrong?

Lack of communication is a least favorite troupe for me. This is partially lack but more misunderstanding a case of something going wrong when they should have talked.
I loved Hudson’s continual surprising reveals. From the nerd to the secret admirer and brother, he is simply adorable, over and over again. From the DoorDash eggs, to Gilmore Girls and Princess Bride references, the drive time for the camera…loved him. All the way through and including the epilogue.

A little bit slapstick, but in ways that could easily happen from bad timing or life getting in the way.
And no third act breakup, though they definitely have to work for it.

Swooning in love with the love from this romcom.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley.

Coming from someone who almost never reads romance, I found this absolutely adorable, quirky, and wholesome as hell, especially when it came to the friendships. That’s a huge win in my book.

Then you throw in some bears, some weird-ass snacks, and a love of LOTR, and suddenly you’ve got a little extra magic sprinkled on top.

I had the opportunity to beta read this one, and getting a behind-the-scenes look at how much work Jessica poured into it was honestly incredible. I’m so excited that everyone finally gets to experience this story! Plus, I’m even more excited for Book 2. 🖤

Thank you to the author and publisher for this ARC of What Could Go Wrong? by Jessica Fowler!!

What Could Go Wrong? is a chaotic and fun book in the best way!! I didn’t know what to expect going into this one, but I ended up enjoying it. Very fast-paced and perfect for the summer!

This book follows Mira, a wedding photographer, and Hudson, a bartender who isn’t exactly who he says he is. After many misunderstandings and miscommunications Mira wants nothing to do with Hudson, but he still chases after her. As they both attend the same wedding things constantly go wrong and they end up trying to understand each other.

What Could Go Wrong? is a fun and emotional read. Although frustrating at times due to the characters actions and miscommunication. However, I really loved this one and would definitely check out more from this author!

What could go wrong when Mira escapes to film a wedding in the Grand Tetons and the guy whose condo she fled from the morning after a drunken hookup is there with his girlfriend? A lot, actually. Really a lot lol.
And it was so fun reading how it all played out in incredibly messy and dramatic fashion.

Jessica's debut is voicy, funny, and juicy with just the right amount of heart and spice (that lake scene though!
🔥 🔥 ). Jessica is a wedding photographer in real life and I can only imagine how many real life wedding hijinks served as inspiration for this novel. I loved all the NC references and the Wyoming setting- the Grand Tetons are now high on my travel list! If you're a fan of romcoms, miscommunication trope, destination-based stories, and spice, I think you'd love this novel!

And can we take a minute to appreciate this cover?! I'm obsessed!

Congratulations to Jessica Fowler on a fantastic debut!

This was SUCH a cute book, and it came at the perfect time. I was in between reads with nothing really speaking to me and I saw a friend of mine that also happens to be one of the BEST English Teachers on the planet, post on FB that someone that went to MY high school...WROTE A BOOK!! After reading the blurb, I immediately downloaded it to my kindle and started reading!

Jessica wrote the perfect little Rom-Com with Spice. It had Gilmore Girls refs, Lord of the Rings refs plus so many more cute additions. I loved Mira and Hudson, as well as Meredith & Vanessa. All in all, I am excited to see where Jessica goes on this writing journey!

This book combined so many of my favourite things that it genuinely felt like it had been written specifically for me. We’ve got Lord of the Rings references, Gilmore Girls vibes, movie quotes sprinkled throughout… I was SOLD. Every little pop culture moment felt fun rather than forced, and it gave the whole story this cosy, comforting energy that made it ridiculously easy to fly through.
And the vibes? Very Unhoneymooners in the best possible way, which immediately worked in its favour because anyone who knows me knows that book owns a little piece of my soul. Like it wasn’t fake dating in the same way that The Unhoneymooners is, but the fact its set in a destination wedding… idk, I cant describe it but the vibes felt similar but different. Don’t question me okay!
What I appreciated most was the way the miscommunication trope was handled. Yes, there’s tension and misunderstanding, but it never completely hijacks the plot to the point where you want to throw the book across the room. It felt realistic enough to create conflict without making the characters unbearable, which is a rare balance.
But the real winner for me was the rekindling friendship aspect. Something about two people finding their way back to each other emotionally will always get me. There’s such a softness to it. The familiarity, the history, the comfort of already knowing someone deeply while rediscovering them at the same time… inject it directly into my veins.
This book was warm, funny, nostalgic, and genuinely charming without trying too hard. It gave me comfort read energy while still keeping me emotionally invested the whole way through.
Absolutely adored it and feel like its helped a little with my slump. Will defo recommend.

This debut was such a fun surprise. I picked it up through the Prime May First Reads selection, and I’m really glad I did.

From the beginning, I found Mira incredibly easy to connect with. Her worries about her business, her career uncertainty, and the self-doubt she carries all felt very grounded and relatable. Even amongst the chaos and humour, there’s an emotional honesty to her character that gave the story a lot of heart.

Hudson ended up surprising me in the best way. I initially expected more of the charming bartender energy, but I really loved how down-to-earth and outdoorsy he was. There’s a steadiness to him beneath the humour and awkward situations, and I especially loved seeing the ways he cared for Mira throughout the story.

The setting was also such a standout. Between the wedding chaos and all the mishaps, the Grand Tetons backdrop added so much atmosphere to the story, and there were multiple moments where I genuinely wished I could be there myself.

The romance itself was fun, messy, and full of misunderstandings in that classic romcom way, but what I appreciated most was that this isn’t a third-act-breakup romance. Instead, the emotional tension comes more from the characters learning how to communicate honestly, work through their insecurities, and decide whether they’re willing to let someone truly show up for them. It made the relationship feel more grounded, and the ending feel all the more rewarding, without relying on unnecessary separation.

Final Thoughts:
A charming and entertaining debut with a gorgeous setting, lovable characters, and little sprinkles of humour woven throughout alongside emotional vulnerability. I’ll definitely be interested to see what Jessica Fowler writes next.

Wedding photographer Mira and Hudson have danced around each other for some time, but the morning after they finally hook up, Mira is shocked to see another woman's things strewn around his apartment. After what happened at the last wedding she attended, that is a complication she doesn't want. When an old college friend asks her for help at her destination wedding, it seems an ideal escape.
Oh, this was so good. We are drip-fed Mira's issues, which go a long way to explaining her attitudes. And we see aspects of Hudson and his family which explains his.
Lots of fun, plenty of angst and an evil ex, who maybe isn't quite that evil after all.
Really good.

This book was an adventure! I enjoyed the destination wedding in Wyoming, complete with family drama and secrets. I loved all of the crazy fun pre-wedding activities 🌼 🏞

Mira and Hudson were great main characters and their slow burn relationship was perfect! Life can be confusing, but I love how Mira found herself along the way.

This is a really cute and enjoyable book. It's funny, romantic, and has a great plot ❤️

What Could Go Wrong? is a lighthearted romance between a wedding photographer and the groom’s brother….who also happens to be the cute bartender she just had a one-night stand with.

Mira and Hudson are super likeable characters. The book is easygoing, and most of the plot really just revolves around the wedding weekend. I like books that can make a small timeline/setting feel much richer, and this fits the bill.

I was a little surprised by the pace of their relationship and how soon the two said the L-word—not that their feelings were unrealistic, but I felt like it came up abruptly. Likely because most of their slow burn is off the page, so their early relationship development leans more towards telling instead of showing. Also, Hudson’s soon-to-be outdoorsman CEO subplot didn’t woo me. I just found it uninteresting.

Regardless, the third act is where the entire cast of characters shines, and the epilogue had me grinning and giggling; it was so fun!

If you’d enjoy a lighthearted listen with wedding antics, found family, LOTR lore, he falls first, and 2/5 spice, you’ll like this audio 🏕️💍📸

cute, funny, unexpected

Thank you NetGalley and Amazon publishing for the early copy of this book.

This was ok, I didn’t love it because there were a bunch of things I just didn’t like. it took me a lot longer than I expected but I did enjoy it. It was cute and funny but some of the characters were just infuriating.

Susan was something else but then again so were Grant and Katherine. None of them got what was coming to them. It just wasn’t a satisfying conclusion to all the drama.

The couple themselves were good, Mira and Hudson were funny. The epilogue was silly.

It was a cute, quick little romance!

A short and sweet romance that is perfect for summer!

This was such a fun romcom that I didn’t want to stop listening to!

I really enjoyed the characters, plot, and pacing. I didn’t find myself getting bored once throughout and was invested in the characters and the outcome. I really loved the forced proximity and the yearning.

The only reason this lost a star for me was that I felt that the miscommunication could have been cleared up way more quickly and easily.

The narrators did a fantastic job and I highly recommend the audiobook.

What Could Go Wrong was such a cute and enjoyable read! I absolutely loved the romance and found myself rooting for Mira from the very beginning. She has such strong FMC energy and was determined, relatable, and easy to cheer for throughout the story.

Hudson was just the loveliest. Truly the kind of book boyfriend everyone needs in their lives. His unwavering support, kindness, and loyalty made him impossible not to love. He's the sort of person who will be on your team no matter what, and that made every interaction between him and Mira even more special.

This book delivered the perfect blend of heart, romance, and characters I genuinely cared about. If you're looking for a sweet romance with a strong heroine and a hero who will completely steal your heart, I highly recommend this one!

This is kind of like a handful of tropes in a trench coat masquerading as a book.
The characters felt paper-thin. We’ve got Mira, a pair of sentient Doc Martins with a camera. And Hudson, whose entire personality is “threadbare Lord of the Rings t-shirt.” The whole thing is stapled together with a miscommunication that was solved in 30 seconds but took about 2/3 of the book to happen.

Favorite part of the book was this quote: “How hard can it be? Men do it.” 10/10

Sorry, I hate to be a downer, but these characters suck. I can’t stand a single one of them except maybe our FMC Mira and a fun sidekick Lyla. The MMC has sooooo many red flags, like I would not let my friend talk to him again until he went to therapy for a while and it was 5 years later. Maybe the book gets better but I couldn’t hang with the silly tension of an immature, insecure MMC who let everyone else run his life. There might be character growth coming, but it was so bad that by chapter 5 I couldn’t stand him! I would recommend in the future, if we’re trying to represent the less confident guy, don’t give him ALL the worst traits. It was too much to overcome! I would never ever give Hudson a chance after his initial f*** up, and honestly…I would probably judge a woman who did. I’ve met and dated plenty of red flag guys in my days and I do NOT want to read about one who we “just need to hear out!” Give me a story of a man who survived some rough sh** and came out better for it…but don’t expect me to hang out for his journey to self-fulfillment. Been there, done that, got the divorce papers to show it.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

This book was EXACTLY what I needed. I've been in a major reading slump for weeks. I feel like I needed a change of scenery so I bumped this to the top of my list.

I have been trying to write this review for a couple of hours and just can't put into words how I loved everything about this book. It had everything I didn't realize I needed right now. Fun MCs, personal growth, complicated friends and family dynamics, and of course a HEA.

I generally DESPISE a miscommunication trope, but this was well done. It was clear that it was going to be a central theme from very early on, but it wasn't crazy dramatic. In the circumstances in which they were, it was easy to believe that the course taken could be natural and not overly convoluted for the sake of plot.

Mira and Hudson's story grabbed me right away and I was so invested in both of them. I loved not only both of the MCs, but I felt like all of the characters were pretty well developed. There were many side stories that intertwined with theirs, but all played out really well and didn't detract from the overall story. Every "side quest" enhanced the plot overall and really worked to flesh out the whole story into something that felt very real.

Hudson was an absolute NERD of a golden retriever and I love him. (I mean, he doordashed eggs to his apartment in the middle of the night because he wanted to cook her breakfast that first morning after their spontaneous night together. How freaking cute.)

The complications with their respective personal lives and careers were so very relatable and my heart ached for both throughout this book. All of the subtle layers that were pulled back on Mira's story about her loss of friendship with her best friend each added a crack in my heart for her. And that loss was so intricately interwoven into her self worth as a person, that it turned her completely upside down. I really enjoyed watching Hudson help her tear down her walls and the way they supported each other.

Overall, a fun book with some serious topics (family drama, career drama, etc), but nothing triggering. I went through all the emotions including a few teary moments, but was smiling through most of it because they were just too cute.

Some quotes from the ARC (final published version may differ)>:

"People can understand romantic breakups, the soul-crushing depths of losing a person you that you'd be with forever. But losing a friend could feel the same way. The only difference is that an apartment could be replaced as easily as swiping right on an app, but replacing a best friend, especially as a woman pushing thirty, feels like an impossibility."
---

"That's the thing... without my camera, I'm nothing to these people. And now that it's gone, what use am I now?"
---

"I can't believe I get to see all of her. The sour and the sweet. The subtle and the strong."

What Could Go Wrong? Well, in fact, what didn’t go wrong more like!

This debut was as described - full of misunderstandings, mishaps and emotional revelations….and in a nutshell… ‘after a disastrous one-night stand, a last-minute destination wedding seems like the perfect escape. Until she sees the sleeping arrangements…’

So, our FMC, Mira, is a wedding photographer questioning everything including her career. Spending most of her evenings at the local bar, where we meet Hudson our MMC. The charming bartender. Who has been making Mira laugh relentlessly for weeks. So, she thought why not… waking up the next morning, all isn’t as it seems.
In a mad dash to get away, a last-minute invitation from an old friend to save her wedding in the Grand Tetons (where is this, please?!), saves Mira’s day. Or does it.
Turns out, Hudson is one of the guests. In fact, he’s not just a guest, he is the groom’s stepbrother.
And of course, as with any typical romcom, nothing is straightforward and somehow, they end up sharing a room, together, alongside Hudson’s girlfriend… or so Mira believes…. In fact, Hudson’s very clingy EX girlfriend.
Hudson, none the wiser at this point, thought dealing with his clingy ex was the worst part of this wedding. But after bumping into Mira and all that follows, with any romcom you’d expect humour and disaster to boot, he sets out on a mission to prove himself to her.

And this is where I have some issue. Don’t get me wrong - no pun intended - this was a fun, cute romance for the most part. Who doesn’t enjoy forced proximity, and slow burn romances. I sure do. But the biggest element for me here was miscommunication. That is something I don’t enjoy. Whilst the lack of communication and constant misunderstanding are what drives the plot, from the not wanting to share his new job at the start to everything that happens whilst they’re away, it did leave things feeling a little lacklustre at times. I just wanted to scream at Hudson, send a text, just open your mouth and explain, it’s not that difficult!!!
But this is most definitely a me thing rather than a book thing!

However, alongside this, the chemistry and relationship development between Mira and Hudson was sweet and worked really well.
Watching their journey unfold across the pages, was refreshing to read, and showed that there was hope and growth no matter what gets in your way.

This was a fast, fun, uplifting read, and absolutely chaotic read. We have boat trips, we have bears, all the family drama, a mother-in-law from hell, frat boy energy, you name it, it’s thrown in. And all of this adds to the humour and nature of this book and kept it light-hearted and entertaining.

Whilst the miscommunication trope did grate a little, there was enough humour, chemistry, and wedding chaos to keep me entertained. If you love romances packed with drama, forced proximity, and a healthy dose of disaster, then you'll probably have a lot of fun with this one.

Thank you to Jessica Fowler and Tandem Collective UK for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

this was such a fun, chaotic little palate cleanser—exactly the kind of one-sitting read you pick up when you want something light, messy, and entertaining 💚✨
Mira and Hudson’s setup is so romcom-coded from the start: flirty bartender x regular customer, slow build of tension… and then everything immediately spirals the second they act on it 😅
the misunderstanding that kicks off the plot definitely leans into classic miscommunication territory. Mira waking up, seeing what looks like clear evidence of another woman, and bolting? completely understandable. Hudson… not clearing things up quickly? deeply frustrating 😂
like truly—this man had so many opportunities to fix things and just… didn’t. if miscommunication tropes aren’t your thing, this might test your patience a bit.
that said, once they’re thrown back together at the wedding (with forced proximity, shared spaces, and very awkward circumstances), the story really finds its rhythm 💫
the destination wedding setting was such a highlight. the national park backdrop and outdoorsy vibe added a fresh layer to the usual wedding chaos—everything feels a little more cinematic and unhinged in the best way 🌲💍
and chaos is the right word here—because everything that can go wrong at this wedding pretty much does. it leans into that zany, over-the-top energy, which makes it a fun ride even when things feel a bit crowded (there are a lot of characters to keep track of 👀).
Hudson ended up being a standout for me despite his communication issues. he’s soft, a little awkward, clearly down bad for Mira, and very much an acts-of-service kind of guy—which always works 🥹 also… the nerdy side? the Lord of the Rings references? we love to see it 🤍
Mira’s storyline added more emotional depth than I expected, especially with the fallout from a broken friendship affecting her career and confidence. that thread grounded the story nicely amidst all the chaos.
the romance itself is on the lighter side spice-wise—think warm, flirty, with just enough heat to keep things interesting without overpowering the story 🔥
overall, this is a quick, entertaining romcom with messy miscommunication, wedding chaos, and a sweet (if slightly frustrating) love story at its core 💚
read if you love:
💚 destination wedding drama
💚 forced proximity
💚 fake dating complications
💚 bartender x photographer
💚 awkward, acts-of-service MMCs
