Kerrion “Steel” Dillinger experienced a heartbreak that carried him through the years. Once a lover boy, he’s turned his back on love and settled for temporary pleasures. These days, his sole focus is being a father to his six month old son and running his defense academy. Falling in love isn’t even on his radar until she shows back up.
Neha Malone thought she could run from her past. When a job opportunity lands her in the same city as the man she once considered the love of her life, Neha realizes that the past will always catch up to you and old feelings die hard.
When the two cross paths again, a world of hurt, anger, and betrayal swirls around them. What happens when the love of your life has done the unthinkable? Is forgiveness an option, or can some things not be swept under the rug?
10 years after ghosting her college sweetheart, Neha is back in town for a new job opportunity. She knows Kerrion and his family still live there so, she’s mastered the art of avoiding him. But, when they finally run into each other, it was not like old times and there was definitely no pickin’ up where they left off for these two. Kerrion hasn’t been the same since Neah dipped on him and broke his heart. The man who use to want to be locked down by one woman no longer exists. Kerrion’s time is spent teaching at his self-defense academy, takin’ care of KJ, and gettin’ in the occasional hook up when necessary. When he finds out Neha is back, he’s confused and unsure how to feel about her presence. Kerrion’s story was a lot more intense than I anticipated. KB hit us with a couple of bombs that had my mouth on the floor and had me grabbin’ my wine and my tissues. There were a lot of hurdles to get over before Neha and Kerrion could get to their second chance at love and, baby, those hurdles were hurdling. Buckle up and get ready for a bumpy ride.
This one started off rough for me because I just felt like the reason for Neha’s disappearance was meh. Like I get she experienced some difficulties but how y’all so in love but you ain’t tell him about your trauma?? Once Steel stopped being a jerk it all started to come together. The family provided well timed comedic relief and it was nice to see Steel and Jaeda’s bond. Overall this one was good not over the top great but enough to entertain.
Kerrion was going THRU IT! That man needs to be blessed by a priest, have his house cleaned by a healer and do intensive therapy because my word.
We finally get the ultimate Lover boy of the Dillinger family story and all this man got was pain. This is essentially a 2nd chance romance but is also soooo much more. We're now 5 books into the series and we get updates on all the characters we've grown to love. We get to watch this crazy family be....well wild AF and get to see them support Kerrion unconditionally.
It's truly a fun read just prepare to need a pallette cleanser after.
Trigger warning for death during child birth, recollections of domestic violence and self harm.
Steele and Smoke are neck and neck for me when it comes to favorite brother! This book tackles some heavy emotional territory (definitely check your triggers), but the storytelling was phenomenal. And that plot twist....baybeeee, I almost threw my device.
What really set this one apart for me was Steele himself. His empathy, sensitivity, and deep longing to be a good man—and an even better father—shone through every chapter. Even in the moments where he and Neha were touch-and-go (understandably so), you could feel how much he wanted to do right by the people he loves. I’m happy they found their way back to each other, because the emotional payoff was absolutely worth it.
And as always, a Dillinger book is always coming with perfectly timed comedic relief—much needed and very welcome considering the intensity of the subject matter.
I was most excited read Steel story from the way he moved in previous books. This one tackled some serious stuff so please check trigger warnings.
In my opinion this story brought back the KB I fell In love with! I think she is top tier on writing a beautiful emotionally intelligent man, a powerhouse black family, and although the topic is heavy she weaves it into the story in such a way that builds the plot effortlessly.
I hate what happened to Donna but understood that had to happen to make room for the emotions Steel carried for his long life love. Ms Anita inability to cope was the toughest part to read, but I can say I saw her plan early on in the book and that part was a bit disappointing but I enjoyed how it played out.
Neha reason for doing what she did was meh to me. Although I understood I don’t think it was enough for her To run off and do what she did without explaining herself.
Steel was such a good MMC he had depth and him as a father was sexy AF! His on page emotional breakdowns were so raw and humbling. They built up his character and now he has taken the #1 spot for me amongst the other brothers. I loved all the on page interaction with the kids.
Overall thus was a really good story and I am excited to see what’s next in this series
4.5 Stars! KB put these characters through it! I loved this story but I do wish there had been a little more on page rebuilding of their romantic relationship. Or some happy flashbacks from the past to display how intense their love was back in college. A little more show, maybe less tell. But again, I still (lol) loved it. I can't wait for more from the Dillengers. Hopefully.
If Kimberly have not given us an apology then I would be totally pissed right now. I say that because this book was emotional and tore my soul up. Kerrion has become my favorite Dillinger because he was in tune with his emotion and also a provider just like he was raised to be.
Neha, I understood her but her communication skills should have come into play 10 years prior. The way she stood up for herself and didn't hold back when they came at her top was awesome. Her sister on the other hand is me as a spirit animal. The army of one line was epic. She matches all energy plus some.
Let's not get on the twist because I don't want to do spoilers but be prepared to cry and rage all in one.
Listen.. I get that she was grieving an unimaginable loss but Anita is a mad bumborass woman🫠 I don’t feel anyway about her exit.
Kerrion and Neha deserved their happy ending. Nayelli and Kerrion’s relationship was the cutest. I absolutely love how this family rides for each other. They’re dysfunctional and chaotic but I love them.
Steel is an emotional, character-driven addition to The Dillinger Chronicles series, and Kimberly Brown delivers a story that is equal parts heartfelt, painful, and deeply healing. This installment follows Kerrion “Steel” Dillinger, a man shaped by betrayal and heartbreak—wounds that pushed him from being a devoted lover boy to someone who chose temporary comfort over real connection. Now, Kerrion is a dedicated single father and the disciplined owner of a defense academy, with no intention of inviting love back into his life. That is, until Neha Malone returns. Seeing Kerrion’s layers unfold made this book such a good read. Beneath his tough exterior, he’s truly a teddy bear—gentle, soft-hearted, and incredibly endearing, especially when it comes to his son. Kerrion in full-on daddy mode is honestly the sweetest part of the whole story. His growth, vulnerability, and loyalty really shine through, and it felt so easy to root for him. One of the biggest charms of this series continues to be the family dynamic. The Dillinger family is warm, funny, supportive, and always beautifully woven into the narrative. Adding Neha, Dinah, and Nayelli to the mix made everything even more adorable. Watching their relationships develop—each one unique, delicate, and meaningful—gave the story a richness that went beyond the main romance. Neha’s journey brings its own emotional weight. Running from her past and then being confronted with the man she once loved makes for a powerful and messy reunion. The hurt, anger, betrayal, and unresolved feelings between her and Kerrion create a tension that feels real and earned. Their story raises tough questions: When someone you love does the unforgivable, is forgiveness even possible? Or are some wounds too deep to close? The side arcs also pack a punch. What happened with Donna left me genuinely sad, and Miss Aneita’s grief was portrayed in a way that felt raw and believable. Grief can twist people in unexpected ways, and Brown handled that complexity well. Overall, Steel is a great story—well-paced, emotional, and full of heart. The romance, the family bonds, and the personal growth all work together beautifully. I truly enjoyed this installment, and now I’m even more excited for Mia’s book. Kimberly Brown just keeps delivering.
First things first! When it comes to writing about a family that loves each other hard and that you’ll love just as much. Kimberly Brown is gonna give you that every single time! With this one you’re gonna get all of the things that you love about the Dillingers; action, laughter, and lots of love. Yet, you will also get new topics that are unique to these two particular characters.
Reading their story and going through their journey was an emotional one for sure. Which makes sense because Steel is the emotional Dillinger. Yet, like his father and brothers, he is an amazing father to his own son. Neha is a layered character who has a lot of her own personal things that she has to work through. Their journey is not an easy one! They are two people who are hurt and ultimately trying to pick up the pieces and figure out how it all fits together.
I loved all the moments from the people that we’ve gotten to know and love throughout the series and even some new ones. I definitely recommend it!
At the end of Jaeda’s book I pretty much pegged what trope(s) would be present in Steel’s book. And while one was going to be glaring, there was also a very surprising turn of events. This was an emotional story about second chances, forgiveness, support, grief, and the power of family. Both characters made mistakes in their past but they were able to move forward in their healing and it was like a beat was never missed. Loved Steel as a dad, but seeing as how Senior is with all of his kids, was there ever a doubt? As always the Dillinger clan were up to their same shenanigans (talking shit & poppin out babies😂) but always showing up when it matters.
I enjoyed this book but I have lots of questions and opinions. If Steel and Neha were so in love why didn’t his family that’s so close and her family never meet Steel or Neha? Like I would have expected his siblings to have met her at least. Also I didn’t get how everyone else noticed that Donna and Neha resembled each other but Steel didn’t. Having Steel admit his attraction to Donna because of her close resemblance to Neha would have made their attraction more believable after so many years. I also felt like Steel would have happily been in a relationship with Donna if that’s what she wanted. He mentioned numerous times how she didn’t want to be married. He looked at Donna as a best friend and he loved her but how he treated her gave more than what he was saying. Lastly, how he wore the chain with the D charm that was supposedly for his son gave I’m hers….I don’t know

One thing Miss Kimberly gone do is have me in my feelings!! She been touching me deep with these past few reads…whew… but baby this one right here!!! This was a great read!! She did that!! It was the growth the love the family for me!! I love this family!! Steel yeah he’s that man for real!! I love a man that ain’t afraid to show his emotions!!
I love this family so much ! The Dillingers are the most loving and closest family members.... I love Steel and his need for starting a family unit like the one he came from.... Neha messed it up for me 😤😒😒 Her keeping such a big part of him away from him without any justification, and without any consequences. he did not deserve that.....I wanted to love this....
I’m a sucker for second-chance romance and messy, unresolved history. A former lover boy turned guarded single dad meeting the woman who broke his heart years later sounded like exactly my kind of emotional setup. I wanted to see if love could survive betrayal, if forgiveness was even possible, and how two people with unfinished business would handle seeing each other again. Honestly, I came for the angst and stayed for the feelings.
Childhood trauma should never be ignored. No child should ever be abused by a parent or be subject to watching it. Communication is key to any relationship. Regardless of the situation, never use a child for gain or pain. There’s a reason for everything. Let’s chat!!
Steel was a big teddy bear and I loved him down🥰. He was not one to play with. Them hands are lethal and his first choice if needed 🫣. He was a protector & a provider and ya boy did just that. Past pain has placed ice around his heart and he had no plans of it melting soon. My guys refused to give his heart and all to another woman after Neha😔. She was the love of his life🥰! This man wanted love to give love and to be father. When the opportunity presented itself to have a kid with his best friend Donna nothing could stop or cause him to stop smiling🥰! KJ was everything and more to him 🥰! Their relationship was everything and so beautiful. They understood each other and the assignment 🥰! Oh but that tragedy left me speechless and my heart broke😭. Not only that but Mrs. Anita 🫣😔! One thing he did was stand 10 toes down for his and his family did the same for him. Now what left me peeking at him was when he seen her after 10 yrs - Neha. Listen he just knew he seen a ghost🫣. Then when found out the secret she had-😔. The way this man was mad had me nervous but regardless of the angry he had, the love for her thump all that.
Neha was a woman with a troubled past😔. Her past cause her to remove herself from the love her life - Steel🥰. When I say she loved everything about this man, she did just that. However, she really didn’t know the man she loved fully🫣. When a career opportunity was presented she had to make some changes that cause her, her daughter Nayelli & sister Dinah to move and this caused all her secrets to fall🫣. Though she knew the chances of seeing Steel, what she was expecting was crossing path with him so soon🫣. So many years had passed but her family still tried to advise her to do what was right and she never did😔. Oh but when she had no choice, the wrath she received was like no other. However, one thing she have to admit was that she still loved that man🥰.
Dinah, she was that sister that anybody would want. She stood ten toes down for her sister and niece Nayelli🥰. When I say she didn’t play about them, I mean just that. What I loved about her was she didn’t bite her tongue for no one🤭. If you came for her sister or nieces, you were coming for her too🤣. Now what shock me was she was the type that loved who loved her - man or woman🥰. To see who her sneaky link was, left me speechless but loved it🤭.
Nayelli, you couldn’t do anything but love her🥰. She was that curious 9 year old🤭. She also did bite her tongue and expressed how she felt and what she wanted! Being the new kids at school, it was rough and caused issue🫣. However, after taking self defense classes, things changed for her in a way she never would’ve expecting🤭.
This was a read that will pull at your emotions and mental state but hits on points that’s going in the world today😔. The updates on the other Dillinger clan was the icing on the cake. One of my favorite parts was when the baby mommas was going in on Senior🥰. Their relationship is one that families today can only wish for🫣! Seeing the change & growth within the MMC & FMC was beautiful. I enjoyed this series so much I need the physical books on my self🤭! Can’t wait for Mia books as I know it’s going to be a hot mess🤣.
Let me be clear....when I say we’ve been waiting on this book, by “we” I absolutely mean ME. 😩 I have always been curious about Steel, his past, his choices, his relationship with Donna, and what really shaped him into who he became. And Kimberly Brown did exactly what needed to be done… she gave us the answers and broke our hearts in the process.
I cried at the beginning. I cried at the end. And yes, I probably cried a few more times in between.
The slow-burn aspect of this story? Perfection. Steel was dealing with some deeply heavy things in his life, and watching it unfold piece by piece made every emotional moment hit harder. At first, I was giving Neha the strongest side eye. I mean the FULL judgment. She was catching all the smoke from me for a good chunk of this book. But after a group chat reality check, I had to pause and really think...she was so young when everything happened. Expecting her to have the emotional maturity to unpack and share that level of trauma back then? Yeah… that might’ve been unfair on my part. Perspective really does change everything.
As always, Deuce and Maceo came through with the comic relief right when we needed to catch our breath. And seeing Senior in his retirement era? I absolutely loved that addition. It was such a beautiful way to show the passage of time and the legacy of this family. I truly adore how this family stands behind each other ten toes down, no wavering, no hesitation. And I love that these strong, outspoken, tough men are also deeply in tune with their emotions. That balance always gets me.
BUT LISTEN… that grandmother? From the very start, she was giving OPP behavior. I didn’t trust her spirit for one second, and even with that, I STILL did not see that coming or the way her storyline wrapped up. The shock of it all took me OUT.
The ending, though? It gave exactly what it needed to give. It reminded me that no matter how dark or twisted things may start, there’s always space for things to turn around and transform.
This one was emotional, heavy, healing, and absolutely worth the wait.
I love a man who is in touch with his emotions and isn’t afraid to express them and that was exactly the type of man Kerrion “Steel” Dillinger is. This man wasn’t ashamed to cry when he felt it and wasn’t afraid to show his vulnerability or emotions and I was here for it. Steel loved hard and was a protector so when he crossed paths with his first love and found out the secret she kept from him after all these years, he was rightfully angry and hurt, but he couldn’t deny the love he still had for her. I don’t agree with how Neha handled things but I understand her thought process especially at such a young age and coming from a place of being triggered from childhood trauma. I liked them together and loved that they were able to reconnect and reach the happily ever after they always dreamed of.
After reading about Donna and Steel, I just knew one or both of them would catch feelings and want more than just being coparents but that wasn’t the case. Baby KJ was loved by everyone that came into contact with him and I loved that for him. I wasn’t expecting things to turn out the way they did with Donna’s mother, but I knew something would happen.
This story touched on forgiveness, grief, the loss of a child, maternal death and even suicide. While there was some heavy themes present throughout this story, there were also plenty of times where I was laughing out loud because if you’ve read any of the other Dillinger sibling books, then you know when they get together, there is nothing but constant jokes and roasting each other. The Dillingers love hard and fiercely and I’m looking forward to finally getting Mia’s story.
As I read this series, Smoke was my favorite Dillinger but now I think Steel is my favorite Dillinger. I think he is the most dangerous Dillinger because he had a soft and sensitive side. He wasn’t afraid to show his emotions and I love a man who isn’t afraid to show emotions.
My review: Steel was thrusted into single fatherhood because Donna passed away during childbirth. I was shocked and cried at that part, though Donna and Steel were not in a relationship. He loved her and I believed she loved him as well. I also believe that the reason Donna didn’t do relationships. Because of how her mother handled the death of her father. I believe Ms. Anita was already dealing with some mental health issues and her death pushed her over the edge. Now imagine running a self defense class for kids. This cute little girl comes in with her aunt because she has been bullied at school. Steel looks at her and sees something familiar about her but he can’t put his finger on it. Fast forward to him almost getting into a fender bender with the one woman who broke his heart. He finds out that little girl who favors someone is his daughter. In the beginning he was pissed, but once he finally listened to why Neha did what she did. He understood and they started rebuilding their relationship. Though Neha was wrong for what she did. I understand all about triggers and fears, but Steel deserved to know about his daughter despite her fear. I loved how The father and daughter relationship developed so naturally. She loved her daddy and he loved being a girl dad. KJ and Neha’s relationship was so cute, he took to her and that was his mama.
If you’re looking for a series that will pull you in, make you feel everything, and stay with you long after you finish, The Dillinger Chronicles is it.
The entire series is amazing, but Stanley’s “Deuce’s” (Book 1) and Kerrion “Steel’s” (Book 5) are easily my favorites. Steel especially hit me hard. I knew it was going to be emotional because of the disclaimer at the beginning, but I wasn’t prepared for how deeply it would affect me. Steel is genuinely a good man, and watching him navigate heartbreak, depression, trauma, forgiveness, and learning how to open his heart again was both painful and beautiful. It’s one of those stories that reminds you how much damage miscommunication can cause and how one honest conversation can completely change everything.
What really stuck with me about Steel’s story was how much space it gave him to be vulnerable. It reinforces something we don’t see enough of: men having emotions, expressing them, and learning how to communicate in healthy ways. Nothing draws me closer to a male character than emotional depth, honesty, and softness paired with strength, and Steel embodies all of that. His story felt incredibly real and relatable.
Another thing I loved was the family dynamic. Without giving anything away, seeing Steel lean on his family during his hardest moments was everything. The Dillinger family is honestly the kind of family I hope to create one day..tight-knit, loving, unfiltered, and loyal. They laugh together, joke, call each other out, and still ride for one another through and through. At the end of the day, it’s all love.
And beyond the emotion, it’s so refreshing to read about Black characters building an empire together—running legitimate businesses (most of them 🌚), creating generational wealth, and living well while doing it. It truly screams Black excellence, strong family ties, and intentional living, and it’s genuinely rejuvenating to read. If you’re looking for a series that’s emotional, heart-warming, a little gut-wrenching, and full of love, loyalty, and family, just go ahead & add The Dillinger Chronicles to your TBR list.
What can I say that hasn't been expressed? I loved Kerrion's and Neha's love journey. There were some real issues that impacted them and they were covered delicately & with taste (physical, emotional, & mental abuse plus death giving birth). In addition, it wouldn't be the Dillinger's if the family didn't come together in times of trauma, love, fun, and laughter I'm not gonna point fingers on the demise of their first relationship, but damn, I'm thankful for second chances. It was a roller-coaster of emotions for me.
Their story landed them in different spaces and places but brought them back together. Pops Dillinger gives great advice to his son to find out her reason for keeping his daughter a secret for 10 years to rid himself of anger and hate. Secrets exposed and tuff decisions and conversations to be held. A daughter who connected with a father that she didn't know about, a baby brother that she adored, and a host of grands, uncles, aunts, & cousins who welcomed both her and her mother & aunt to the fold.
The siblings of course continued acting w/each other and now add Aunt Dinah who fit right in. don't know, right now Kerrion and Neha's story is my favorite Dillinger so far.
I don’t normally enjoy second chance romances. There’s normally a reason that characters aren’t together and this book didn’t really change that outlook for me. Neha getting triggered and running away was very understandable to me. However, 10 years is a whole lotta time to hide a baby. Especially when everyone around you is telling you that you’re wrong in doing so. Like not once in the 10 years that Nayelli was alive did she try to reach out so how sorry is she actually. The anger that Steel felt was justified and I think he forgave her too easily in my opinion. Like if she didn’t get the job opportunity and had to move would she have just kept it a secret for the rest of her life?? Probably. Also, them jumping back into a relationship almost immediately without any real resolution left me feeling unsatisfied. Neha had literally no consequences to her actions besides Steel giving her the cold shoulder and I really didn’t like that because the whole time she was making herself out to be some victim. “Oh he won’t let me explain my choices” and then even when she did explain it wasn’t even justified, just an excuse. Loved Steel and always love the other Dillingers, she just didn’t do it for me in regards to an FMC. Can’t wait for Mia (and hopefully Titan 🤞🏾)

First of all, Ms Kimberly knows how to write a close-knit family. Nobody writes family bonds like her. Nobody. She writes slow burns that stay engaging the entire time. I was invested from beginning to end. I have never waited hand and foot for an author the way I waited for this release. I was checking every single day even though she never said a word about when the book was coming. It did not disappoint.
Neha had my blood pressure up for a while with that over-the-top protectiveness. And she kept saying Steel played a part in why she left. Girl, no he didn’t. Neha was on my nerves but if my Steel happy, I guess.
Senior, despite being a hoe, he is such a great example for his boys. They step for their kids. Ain’t no deadbeats in the Dillinger family. I still want Senior to find love because he is such an involved grandpa. The whole blended family dynamic is my favorite of all time. The way all these kids with different moms still love each other, and the way the moms even get along, is unmatched.
Ms Anita’s story broke me. It was sad and heavy. The way her storyline unfolded hit me right in the chest. I teared up. This book gave me all the feels.
I am not forgiving Neha yet, but again, if Steel is happy, I will mind my business.
Ms Kimberly, you are in your bag. The Dillinger family will forever be one of my favorite fictional families. I will always show up for them.
Wow, There is just so much to unpack. When still found out about Nayelli and the Neha kept her a secret...I swear everything he was in his feelings my heart was constricting. I felt so bad for Steel, however I understood where she was coming from running, I don't agree with it but I understood it was a response to trauma and he unintentionally triggered her. His anger and coldness was warranted but I was happy when he finally listened to her. Dinah was def a fav and she was bout her sis, I was happy she found something and with none other than kaylynn. I didn't expect that. Donna mother...well I felt bad for her, she just couldn't process either deaths she suffered. I called what she would do but it was unfortunate. I def was still calling her a bitch for being curt with Neha and the baby napping but I still felt bad for her. If only she was able to get help. Neha bio sperm donor...well may he rest in shit, loved the fam shenanigans as always....and not just about all the women on lock from they husbands...damn fertile. But this was so damn enjoyable...🔥🔥
