No one wants to buy your product!

What they want to buy is a solution to their problems. How do I grow revenue? How do I improve productivity? How do I increase our security?......

So if you want to help your customer achieve their outcomes, you need to understand how to help them address those problems WITH your product. That is the basis for Kevin Cope and Ben Cook's new book Business Acumen for Sales Success.

The authors break down the five key areas that every business has to address:
Cash, Profit, Assets, Growth and People. In each of these areas, they break down how you need to understand your customer's business to align with how you can help them. In each section they use real world financials, quarterly earnings calls and situations so that you can understand exactly how to look at these points to create your alignment.

My favorite example is the ever present soda 12 pack. You might think this form of packaging came from Pepsi or Coke but it didn't, it came from Alcoa the maker of aluminum cans. They looked at how you can best place packaging in the refrigerator and then they went back to Coke and introduced this idea to them. The result, a 10% increase in sales in the first year. Did Alcoa sell soda? NO. Did Alcoa sell cardboard packaging? NO. But did this increase their sales to Coke and eventually Pepsi and other beverage companies, ABSOLUTLEY!

And to me, this isn't just a sales book. If you are working in ANY department in a company you can use the ideas in this book to sell your ideas internally. In IT an want to buy software, position it around the 5 keys. Want to increase headcount in your department, postion it around the 5 keys. Want to implement changes to your delivery strategy, position it around the 5 keys.

In this age of AI, our ability to be creative and align to business outcomes may well be the difference between thriving or being displaced.

I like keeping this on my desk as a reminder to stay curious. Even a quick skim before a call helps reset my thinking. It works.
