A fashionable new sanatorium is attracting London’s elite with the promise of curing many ills but whispers soon emerge of questionable practices. Do they offer miracle treatments...or something far more sinister?
Amelia Greystone is alarmed by the rumors as a friend currently resides within the sanatorium’s walls. She turns to Scotland Yard Inspector Henry Field, and together they begin to track down patients and scrutinize supposed cures.
Before they can press further, disaster strikes. A bomb detonates at Scotland Yard, and Henry is caught in the blast, leaving Amelia shaken. Seeing Henry injured stirs the grief she’s tried to put behind her after the deaths of her husband and daughter. She can’t bear the thought of losing another loved one. And she detests that science has been twisted into a weapon against the man who’s become so dear to her.
Henry is unaccustomed to being the victim of a crime, and he struggles knowing his growing affection for Amelia has placed her in danger yet again.
As ominous truths about both the sanatorium and the bombing emerge, Henry and Amelia must rely on each other to expose a sinister deception.

I am enjoying this series and I was happy to read that Amelia and Henry’s relationship has taken a big step forward. However, some dramatic events may make a difference to how Amelia feels about it. There is a mystery surrounding a new clinic that claims to heal people. There have been a number of deaths there and last minute changes in their wills. The clinic is surrounded by secrecy and visitors are not allowed. There is also trouble involving the Fenians and which has consequences for both Henry and Amelia. I enjoy the way that Amelia gets involved in the investigations and also how she is encouraging younger ones to have an interest in science. There are a good mix of very likeable characters. I’m looking forward to the next book. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Another excellent book in the series. Amelia and Henry are drawn into investigating a sanitarium that has unorthodox practices and has come to the attention of the authorities. Against the backdrop of the Fenian bombings of the time that both are caught in they realise, after a dangerous event, that their feelings for each other are true. The investigation leads to the uncovering of conspirators and the criminal dealings of the doctor involved. As the truth is uncovered and the dominoes fall Amelia receives news that sets the scene for the next instalment. I highly recommend these books as they are hard to put down with well drawn plots and characters.
Once again Henry Field and Amelia Greystone find themselves embroiled in a new mystery, this one involving a close friend of Amelia’s Aunt and her stay at Hollowgate Heights, an exclusive clinic that boasts alternative treatments and possible cures for people that traditional medicine has deemed hopeless. But Amelia’s friend is not the only reason Henry has taken an interest in this case. His good friend Arthur Taylor, the surgeon who performs the postmortems for Scotland Yard has also brought up some concerns about a recent postmortem he performed on a former guest of the clinic. Unfortunately, their visit to the clinic does nothing to relieve their concerns and only raises more questions.
As usual, Henry also has other cases and while following up with an informant, he is caught in an explosion that results in serious injuries to not only his body, but to his memory. He is concerned that he can’t remember why he was speaking to his informant and wonders what else he has forgotten. Upon learning of his injury, Amelia is beside herself with fear, and wonders about the future of their relationship, as she has already known loss and isn’t sure she can endure losing another person she loves. Thankfully, Henry does recover his memories, but his investigations don’t seem to be progressing, and even more concerns arise about the clinic as well as the increasing number of bombings around London, especially when Amelia is unwittingly caught up in the investigation.
This was another well-written, nicely paced story with a great mystery and a bit of intrigue. I love the relationship between Amelia and Henry is progressing and giving them both a well-deserved chance at a happy life. This book has more than one mystery, a very slow burn romance, interesting historical facts, wonderful secondary characters, a satisfying resolution to at least one case and the promise of more intrigue to follow. Overall, I highly recommend this series and am looking forward to the next installment. This is the sixth book in the series and while it could be read as a standalone title, I would recommend reading the series in order for the best reader experience.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that I requested and was provided to me by the publisher/author. All opinions in this review are my own. *

The sixth book in this brilliant series – it goes from strength to strength. Wonderful characters, a well paced story, an intriguing mystery & a slow burn romance. I love both Henry & Amelia, they work so well together & they’ve gradually fallen in love. I love how they actually talk to each other & shares thoughts & theories. The case is disquieting, the treatments offered at the sanitorium sound awful. There’s also the bombings in London & Henry & Fletcher unofficially look into them. Henry & Amelia are also growing closer. I like how the author sets up the next book too I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
Another edge-of-your-seat mystery with Amelia Greystone and Inspector Henry Field!
Ms Williams always shines a light on such interesting aspects of Victorian life with this series--this time it's "miracle cures" at a private sanitarium that specializes in starving its "guests" and giving them hour-long enemas hydropathy treatments. Yikes. As per usual, there is actual historical basis for this--revealed in her author's note at the end--which once again makes me so very glad to be alive in the 21st century rather than the 19th.
HOUR-LONG ENEMAS. I can't even.
Besides the mysterious sanitarium, Amelia and Henry are also navigating their new relationship status (a conversation about which may have made me squeal at one point) and dealing with a frightening series of bombings in London (this last plot point may continue? I've got my suspicions about the law enforcement group that's supposedly investigating). Time is spent with Henry's parents and under the watchful eye of Amelia's overlord cat. And also as usual, the ending of this novel leaves us hanging for what will be the plot of the next as our MCs learn that a friend of Amelia's family is suspected of murder. Fingers crossed we won't be waiting too long for the next book!
Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
To say this story is unique is an understatement! It's definitely on the dark side, nasty deeds are off page. You will not be able to stop reading, so allow time to fully immerse yourself. I love the cover and you get a feel for what the story is about.
Our MC finally say I love you to each other. There was one blimp in the story where something happens to the H. I thought for sure we were going down a cookie cutter hole, but alias, nope! That's why this author is a joy to read.
There are 3 different stories going on, but you will not get lost. Great pacing. characters written with depth - main and secondary. I think you would enjoy this series, by starting with book 1. Characters build on each story. I can be a standalone, but your enjoyment would be enhanced by staring at the beginning.
Clean story with only kisses, no cheating, no cliffhanger, nice set up for the next story, and some romance. All 3 stories had resolution, so nothing left dangling.
I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase.
I received ARC and all opinions are my own and freely given. (ljb)
Another thrilling mystery that is a bit personal for Amelia! Her friend Miss Louisa Elmcroft decides to visit a Sanatorium for health reasons but there are reports of some very strange events there at Hollowgate Heights. When no one is allowed to visit the “guests” there that raises additional concerns! As always there are multiple events and cases simultaneously but this time they do not tie into each other. Inspector Henry was already involved in solving a theft jewelry heist that appears to be an inside job. But tgat is the very least of Henry and Amelia’s concerns! This story has several moving parts! I was beyond thrilled to know their relationship/courtship was finally on firm ground! But there are two exploding bombs set off separately that affect them both! When more clues and victims show up as part of the Sanatorium investigation the clues finally make sense. Can these two ever catch a break for themselves? No when there is other sinister people that are too willing to commit a crime! Bravo loved the intrigue and romantic factor finally for this couple! I received an ARC copy for my unbiased opinion!
Another great addition to the Field & Greystone series! These Victorian Historical murder mysteries have Scotland Yard Inspector Henry Field solving murders with the aid of widower Mrs. Amelia Greystone, who was the wife of one of Henry’s murder victims and has since become a dear friend and as this book opens maybe much more. Their sweet romance is truly endearing. The murder mystery in this one involves the Hollowgate Heights sanitarium which specializes in hydropathy and the use of enemas to cure illnesses but there seems to have been some questionable deaths. Also within the story is a subplot of bombings occurring around London thought to be done by the Fenians, Irish rebels, which will injure our beloved Henry and frighten sweet Amelia. Another investigation involves a jewelry heist. Plenty of crime to solve and plenty of sweet romantic moments kept this book a page turner for me. I truly cannot get enough of Amelia and Henry and when they are solving crimes together I’m in awe. Oh, I do enjoy Sgt. Fletcher as well. I received an Advance Review Copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This has been a wonderful series, I’m glad to see more stories being added. This time Inspector Henry Field and Amelia Greystone are called to assist at the fashionable new sanatorium where promises are made of curing many ills. But the regime is strict and the results don’t come for everyone. Also, some of the patients are passing away for no apparent reason and their families are wondering what is happening at the sanatorium. When Henry and Amelia start their investigation, they start to run across red flags. Plus, a friend of Amelia’s aunt is at the sanatorium. Will she be safe there or is she in danger?
I also enjoyed seeing Henry and Amelia’s relationship progress to the next level. They are such a nice couple and blend well together. If you have started this series, you should consider it. You will enjoy each story.
Henry and Amelia are at it again. Amelia’s Aunt has a friend who signed herself in to a sanatorium that has come across as possibly nefarious . Their concern brings about an investigation that causes them both a lot of leg work. I adored how the author wraps many investigations in Henry’s storyline-it brings a “realness” to the tale. It was frightening how she even put some true issues in the mix and gave each of them a chance to explore their feelings from their point of view. Their relationship is blooming and I could feel their excitement as well as anguish about it all. This author does a stunning job of writing well plotted mysteries that keep you turning pages relentlessly - very difficult to put down! I received this story for free and these are my own views.
The narration and dialogue seemed stilted to me. The pacing was laborious. Field and Greystone continue to treat each other like strangers, although they are courting.
The mystery was challenging; the pacing definitely picked up toward the end. And I was thankful that this book came out promptly before I could forget the characters.
It felt like the story crawled, and I did not connect with the main characters; it was a disappointment. Perhaps the next one will be better.
Now this was a book a just couldn't put down at all, book 6 of this duo and honestly I cannot wait to see if there will be anymore books coming out for this series. This murder mystery was really good thinking, was put together well and it did have me guessing from when we first met the doctor but wow all the guessing and I think there was a twist to now that was something. Honestly love this field and greystone duo, so hard not to fault this couple. I really can't wait for more books to come out in the future, just don't want this series to end.
Another solid entry in a series I am enjoying. I enjoy the growing relationships between the characters in this series. I hope some of the “teasers” that have been dropped in this book and others eventually get addressed in a meaningful way. I am hopeful they will. The main investigation is solid and look forward to seeing how the bombing investigation comes back in the future. I sense we are not done with that yet.
There is something so uniquely unsettling about a 'miracle cure' turning into a nightmare. Lana Williams does a fantastic job of making the sanatorium feel both glamorous and ghoulish. What really got to me, though, was the 'twisted science' element. As a reader, you feel Amelia’s frustration and fear as she fights to protect Henry. The stakes felt so personal this time around, making the final reveal even more powerful. A hauntingly good read!
Book six of the series is as enthralling as the prior five. It's always a huge challenge for an author to keep a series fresh and innovative when the main characters are featured in each story. That said, this author does it with seemingly little difficulty as each story brings new perspectives, creativity and enjoyment. I strongly recommend this series to anyone who likes mystery mixed with history.
The Sinister Deception is a great addition to the Field & Greystone series! I love returning to Amelia & Henry's lives and finding out what mysteries they are working on this time. I'm a nurse so it was fascinating and terrifying to read about the sanatorium and everything going on there. It was hard to have Henry injured but it added a complexity to the situation. I love the banter with the other characters throughout the story. Wonderful novel and I look forward to the next one!
Yet another brilliant addition to the Field & Grey stone series. I loved how we see the further development of the relationship between Henry & Amelia. This mystery delves into the medical realm with so grossly interesting practices to treat illnesses. Amelia has a tie to this case through her aunt. I enjoy how this author adds her own feelings into the story about man's inhumanity. I also greatly admire how she gives snippets into her character's feelings. The way she describes the feeling of not wanting to rush the other into a relationship is exquisite. The reader feels the tension, but also the desire which is so true. The clues and reasoning were easier to follow, but she also lays the foundation for the next story while also adding side issues that Henry is working on for the Yard. Another must read!
A Page Turner. Several cases for Inspector Henry Field in this story - a troubling sanitorium, a jewellery theft and Fenian bombings (the latter of which both Henry and Amelia get caught in). Just as good as the previous books and Henry and Amelia’s relationship is deepening. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I love this series. Amelia and Henry make a great pair as she assists him with cases from Scotland Yard. It was so nice seeing how their relationship grew and that the finally admit there love for one another. Their investigation into a sanitorium is fraught with road locks but the will get to the bottom of it. Looking forward to more adventures with this pair.
This was an outstanding book to read. This instalment had me on the edge of my seat all the way through. It is wonderful to see the characters grow as investigators together and as individuals. I can’t wait for the next book.
So, I'm extremely pleased with this series. Henry and Amelia not only make a perfect couple but also a wonderful investigating duo. It is also good to see that Yvette has become a helpful sidekick to Amelia. I look forward to the 7th book in this series. Highly recommend them all.
I adore this series. I love the progression of Amelia and Henry's relationship, although I'll admit I would have liked to see more of it in the second half of the book. The crime was interesting. Overall very enjoyable!
Book 6 in the series takes a uniquely dark and unsettling twist - in the best way. The mystery is gripping, the atmosphere is eerie, and both the main and secondary characters remain as likable as ever. Henry and Amelia continue to shine as partners; their teamwork is seamless, their instincts complement each other beautifully, and now that they’ve finally admitted their feelings, their slow‑burn romance adds an extra layer of warmth to the shadows. One of my favorite parts? They actually talk to each other. They share ideas, challenge assumptions, and pick up clues the other misses. It’s refreshing, smart, and makes their partnership feel real.
The case itself is deeply disconcerting. The so‑called “treatments” for the "guests" at the sanitorium are downright ghastly, and the string of bombings across London adds even more tension as Henry and Fletcher investigate the crime "unofficially, off the books".
This can be read as a stand‑alone, but I highly recommend starting from the beginning to fully appreciate the couple’s journey and the returning cast of characters. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
The sanatorium, Hollowgate Heights, comes under suspicion when the son of a patient doesn't understand why his father changed his will before his death. Amelia's aunt is concerned about a friend who went there for her health, but there has been no word since she arrived at the sanatorium. Scotland Yard Inspector Henry Field and Mrs. Amelia Greystone must investigate. As there are more interviews, there are more unanswered questions. It's even more suspicious. At the same time, bombings in London are becoming more problematic. Solving two interesting cases bring Henry and Amelia closer together. I recommend reading the series in order. Kisses only. Some violence. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book gifted by the author.
I found this instalment in the series to be an easy and enjoyable read. While it contained less mystery than some of the previous stories, it was often quite clear what was happening, this was balanced nicely by the development in the central couple’s relationship. Alongside a couple of secondary cases, the narrative flows smoothly and keeps you invested throughout.
It was also lovely to see the return of familiar side characters, along with updates on how former victims are doing.
