To hide her darkest secret, a woman must submit to a killer’s twisted demands in a shocking novel of psychological suspense from bestselling author Elle Marr.

Body broker Penny Lin keeps her distance from the past as she transports donated cadavers in Portland, Oregon, to laboratories, universities―anyone who can justly benefit from the dead. Then, among the deceased, Penny finds murder victim Cesar Velasquez, her ex-lover and a major figure in medical research, whose body comes with an anonymous Don’t tell a soul.

The sender knows too much about Penny and the traumas she’s fled from. The grifting family members she left behind. The dark and devastating secrets she carries. To keep them hidden, Penny must comply with a killer and dispose of the dead, laundering their remains. When the blackmailer begins delivering more bodies to Penny’s shop, she’s torn between wanting justice for the victims and fearing her complicity in murder. Then, Penny is attacked, shattering any illusion of safety she once held.

As the maddening game continues, Penny begins to question her memories, her sanity, and how to escape a killer’s twisted revenge―without becoming another body in her inventory.

A dark, atmospheric psychological mystery with an unusual premise and a slightly unsettling edge. This was my first Elle Marr book, and I was really intrigued by the storyline because I haven’t read anything quite like it before.

It was a little slow to start and I had a hard time connecting with the characters at first, but the premise kept me wanting to see where everything was going. It never really picked up like I hoped it would, but I really liked the psychological side of the story and how Marr explored why the characters behave the way they do, especially when trauma, secrets and identity come into play. You can definitely tell psychology plays a big part in how she develops her characters. Dark and foreboding is probably the best way I can describe the overall feel of this one.

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed Mirai’s narration. She had a balanced tone that fit the character’s personality well.

Not one of my psychological mysteries, but I am grateful to have had the opportunity to read this in advance. Thank you Brilliance Audio for the advance audiobook. I was excited to receive my first read/listen of Elle Marr’s work. These opinions are my own.

I am so thankful to have received an ARC from Elle Marr, and just finished reading. I planned on taking the long holiday weekend, but ended up finishing a day faster than expected. The first 50-60% moved pretty slowly to me, but it picked up as others have said. There are three storytelling methods in the book, the main story from Penny’s POV, then a “Manifesto” POV and a recording transcript. I found that a bit hard to follow. I’m a big hockey fan, and having Penny refer to the donor bodies as “Stanleys” had me laughing…inappropriate 😂 While the story didn’t really resonate with me, I will try again - Elle seems like such a kind, cool person, definitely someone I’d like to support.

Elle Marr’s newest novel She Dies In The End comes out this Tuesday!! If you like books that are all tied up with a pretty bow at the end, then this one will be for you!

This slow-burn thriller is blackmail and suspense at it’s finest!
How far would you go to keep a secret you had been holding since you were 8 years old?!?
Body broker, Penny Lin is being blackmailed with dead bodies and if she doesn’t comply with this killer’s demands, her secret will be revealed and SHE will be blamed for all of the murders.
But what do all these bodies have in common? Who could be blackmailing a girl with new friends or close contacts? And Why?

I will say, the first majority of this book is pretty slow. There were times where I was confused, but I think that is the point. This novel is written with three unique perspective styles:
Penny’s
A manifesto (from the killer)
Recording Transcripts
and a narrator you don’t really know if you can trust or not….

There were a few times the premise was so slow and I thought about putting it down, but about that time, something would happen to peak my interest and make me keep pushing through to find out what exactly was going on! I am glad I did because the ending explained everything so well making it all come together with perfection! The ending also had a HUGE twist, you won’t see coming! 😱

👀Triggers:
This dark and twisted novel explores some deep psychological traits including disassociate identity disorder, childhood trauma, and body dismemberment.

While this one didn’t resonate with me as much as I had hoped, I am glad I gave it a try and I am beyond honored to read a copy of She Dies In The End, before it’s pub day, Tuesday, October 20th!

Elle Marr’s She Dies in the End delivers a masterclass in psychological suspense, weaving a web of buried secrets, fraught relationships, and the desperate measures individuals take to safeguard their loved ones. From the very first page, a palpable sense of intrigue hooks the reader, practically forcing you to flip the pages to uncover the truth.

The pacing of the suspense is easily the book's greatest asset. Marr is exceptionally skilled at drip-feeding information, allowing you to piece together theories just before throwing a wrench in them with fresh complications. Equally compelling is the cast of characters; their opaque motives and unpredictable choices amplify the story's underlying tension, leaving you questioning everyone's innocence.

Underneath the thrilling plot lies a poignant exploration of betrayal, fear, and the heavy toll of deception. These emotional undercurrents elevate the mystery, ensuring the stakes feel deeply personal. Packed with well-timed revelations, the narrative maintains a tight grip on the reader's attention from start to finish.

Ultimately, She Dies in the End is a gripping read tailored for anyone who craves an atmospheric, twisty thriller. Marr effortlessly sustains a mood of paranoia that keeps you locked in. If you love complex characters and dark secrets, this one deserves a spot on your reading list.

Thank you to NetGalley, Elle Marr, and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I had a bit of a hard time getting into this book.
I did complete it because I wanted to give an honest review. It did get a little more fast paced after the 60% mark of the book, but then the ending seemed anti-climactic.
This was my first read by Marr, and I’d still be interested in reading others.

Thank you to Kathleen Carter Communications and Amazon Publishing for the gifted ARC, and to Brilliance Publishing and NetGalley for the gifted early listen.

In She Dies in the End by Elle Marr, Penny Lin matches donated bodies with the labs that need them, and she treats the dead with respect. When her ex turns a body into a party spectacle, her furious rant goes viral. Then he turns up dead in her morgue, and Penny is suspect number one.

A truly original premise, steady tension, and lots of twists. Mirai's audio narration is fantastic. I started out reading the ARC and switched to the audiobook for the majority of the book.

If you love mysteries with a premise you've never seen before, add this one to your list.

*I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher*

While the story started off a little slow for me, it quickly became incredibly addictive. Once I was invested, I couldn't put it down and found myself eager to uncover more with every chapter. This is a powerful story about childhood trauma, healing, and discovering that your past does not define who you are. The author seamlessly incorporates meaningful life lessons without feeling heavy-handed, making them all the more impactful. Combined with a compelling plot and beautiful writing, this was a memorable and emotionally resonant read.
