Tknęła moje serce. Złamała je. Miłość ojca do córki była bardziej wzruszająca niżeli wątek romantyczny Wacława i Marii, choć wciąż niesamowicie poruszający.

Nadal nie wiem, w którym momencie pojawił się Pan Wojewoda, ale to nie aż tak istotne…

Well.. That was an interesting experience.

Polish Romanticism is, and always will be, my favorite literary movement. I love all the motifs, the atmosphere and the time period. I’ve read a lot of Romantic dramas, poems and novels in my school years, but Maria was not one of them. Now I can say that I’m glad I’ve read it now when I’m little older.

Let me begin with the plot. It feels like you’re reading a book in a movie frames. First, Malczewski paints the picture of a Cossack galloping on black stallion through the Ukrainian steppe, then he writes about some castle (unknown to a reader, ofc) and then, on top of that, there is a description of some feast. The whole plot is so chaotic and fragmentary that it is almost impossible to formulate a chronological plan of events upon first reading.

I’ve read this book twice and still was not able to correctly analyze and interpret some parts. You may say that maybe I’m not smart enough or maybe the language was too difficult for me.. Well, I had no trouble with Mickiewicz, Słowacki or Krasiński.

If I were to read this book purely for pleasure I would be hugely disappointed, but I’ve read it for my lit class, and I have to say, that discussing it with my professor was w lot of fun (and made some passages a lot clearer)!

In my opinion, the biggest advantage of this novel is its dualism.
We have the historical meaning in which author depicts customs of Polish noble class in XVII century. In addition to that, there is deeper, existential meaning to this story.

If there were no Mickiewicz, Maria would represent the dawn of Polish Romantisism. It would be a different beginning, nevertheless still great.

Ja dałabym chętnie i 4⭐️ bo sama historia i jej pesymizm wydają się naprawdę spoko, ale jak to było nieczytelnie napisane… rany.. XDD naprawdę bardzooo mało z tego zrozumiałam - okropny styl (wiem, że takie czasy, ale mamy przykłady, że nawet wcześniejsze utwory mogły być dobrze napisane!). 🥴🥲

Omówienie było ciekawsze niż sama książka, ale są gorsze lektury.

ok, za drugim razem podobała mi się dużo bardziej. Są fragmenty, gdzie Malczewski naprawdę przegina z tym patetyzmem i sakralizacją, ale overall to jest bardzo ciekawe. I przy kilku fragmentach faktycznie byłam zachwycona stylem.
