What the flying fuck is going on in this book?! Cover to cover angsty fuckups and shitshows, unhinged drama and a cliffie.

I don't recommend starting this series until you've got time to binge all 5.

3.5 stars, rounded up.

I had been discussing with a reading buddy after finishing book III, and before the release of book IV that I would cry if anything happened to Ihsan.

So, needless to say, I was really not happy about Ihsan not just having been killed, but that this book opens months after the events when everything has already settled back down at the castle, the only thing amiss being Nissai still hiding away.

It felt like such a nothing burger of a plot. Just trauma porn. Justice for Ihsan. His absence was really a huge loss to the series. I know it’s a romance, but Nissai’s relationship with Ihsan was a much stronger relationship that what Nissai had/has with Valadrin.

So, yeah. Not happy.

Also, very little Dara this time around. Even though Dara is now directly assigned to Nissai. I guess my hopes of a Dara x Ihsan romance are squashed. And the Dara x Nissai (one sided) romance seems to have fallen to the wayside to.

I did enjoy the whole heartbroken & lonesome Nissai during the whole Sierra arc. That was great.

And of course some more one step forward, two steps back with Valadrin.

And the twist at the end? Did not see that coming. Partially because I thought the message from The Rat was going to be just brushed aside, partially because I forgot about Rossa. Though, I can’t say I’m surprised about the baron. Always been shady, that one.

I will say, I thought this would be angstier, considering the high angst warning in the front matter. Ihsan’s death was handled too casually for it to deliver much angst, and I was more annoyed with how ithe author handled his death than I was distraught by his actual death. And while the whole Sierra thing was angsty, I don’t think the angst was really any higher than any other book in the series so far.

But, angst is subjective. I was hoping for emotional devastation that lingered for days, and I didn’t get that from this book.

Overall, I enjoyed it, just as much as the other books in the series and will be eagerly awaiting the 5th and final book. But I definitely took off that half star because of Ihsan, and even debated taking off an entire star. I don’t enjoy trauma porn masquerading as angst.

This was a series of five books and each book
somehow kept getting better. I honestly wish she had 50 more books because I don’t want to run out of Nissai and Valadrins story.

This story was so beautiful and so intriguing that I kept finding excuses to pick it back up. What really stood out to me, though, was how true every character stayed from beginning to end. No one suddenly became someone else just to fit the story. Every reaction, every decision, every emotion felt exactly like a real person would respond. The way she writes human emotions and relationships is just incredible. Nothing felt exaggerated or fake.

By the time I finished, I just sat there thinking, “Wow.” Not many books do that to me anymore.

If you’re on the fence about reading this one, just do it. You’re seriously missing out if you pass on it. This author is beyond talented, and I am desperate for Zorans books. I can’t wait to return to Nissa’s world. The push and pull, the angst at times and the delicious reconciliations. I only wished Val was a tad more asshole-ish at times because he forgave his Nissa too quickly. Oh sweet Dara! The wise warrior! That’s all I am going to say. I have never managed to not be bored or not skip a few pages in a series this long but this book you will not be able to blink! Ugh I wish I could reread it for the first time again. Ok Silencio, here I come for all your other books. I see you have written my fav genre the mafia series and 90% of books with mob themes disappoint me since most authors can’t capture the real dark brutality of that world and end up writing fluff silly pieces that make me want to gag. So far very few have done it with among them Voinov on top! But I have a feeling I am going to add to my list of FAV authors for the genre. 💕

For whatever reason the last book isn’t on goodreads so I am including it in this review as well.

These last two books were messy and I wasn’t thrilled with the ending. There wasn’t even an attempt at a happy ending in my opinion.

I’m also going to say that Dara deserved better.

I really was getting frustrated with Nissai and Valadrin fighting again right at the end, BUT the author does know how to make great cliffhangers so onto the next one!
