He is a former Research Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) and Director of the World Development Movement. He is currently an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Strathclyde and has been Visiting Research Fellow at the Institut Francais des Relations Internationales, Paris and the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Auswartige Politik, Bonn.
Mark has written six books and numerous articles on British and US foreign policies and international development and trade issues.
Alongside his work as an analyst of British foreign policy, Mark has worked in the field of international development for 18 years, including as Head of Global Advocacy and Policy at Christian Aid and Head of Policy at ActionAid. He is a graduate of Goldsmiths’ College, University of London and the London School of Economics and Political Science.

اگرچه بریتانیا برای پیشبرد سیاست خارجیاش بیشتر با جریانهای سنی همکاری کرده، از همدستی مقطعی با نیروهای شیعه نیز ابایی نداشته است؛ نیروهایی همچون شیعیان رادیکال ایران در دههی 1950 و در قبل و بعد انقلاب اسلامی 1979

يعرض الكاتب لفصول مما أسماه التآمر السري بين بريطانيا والأصوليين والذي يرصد حدوثه في القرن الماضي ومطلع القرن الحالي ، كما يلقي الضوء على نمط مألوف تستخدمه القوى الكبرى وهو استعدادها للعمل مع العناصر الرجعية و المتطرفة التي لا يجمعها معها الا عدو مشترك بوصفها عنصر ازعاج تساهم في تقويض مكانة ذلك العدو ثم يتم اسقاطها عندما تفقد جدواها .
أسجل في هذا السياق تحفظي على كلمتي (نآمر و سري ) في عنوان الكتاب فالتآمر يحتاج الى طرفين ، وفي الحالة التي يرصدها الكتاب لا يوجد سوى طرف واحد بينما الآخرون ما هم إلا أدوات يتم توظيفها والتلاعب بها ، أما عن وصف ما احتواه الكتاب بالسري فهذا يصح فقط اذا ما تم تغيير استعمال كلمة سري وعكسنا معناها لتطلق على الأمر الذي يعرفه الجميع .
اتبعت بريطانيا (ينطبق هذا على تعامل أغلب الدول الكبرى ) في تعاملها مع الحركات الاسلامية سياسة نفعية تجلت في الاعتماد على ابرام صفقات مع المتأسلمين والحركات الجهادية لتحقيق أهداف قصيرة الأمد وبغض النظر عن التداعيات طويلة الأجل الى جانب الاستخدام البراجماتي للاخوان المسلمين .
وبالحديث عن الاخوان فالفكرة السائدة عنهم بأنهم يتمتعون ببراغماتية وانتهازية شديدة اتضح انها من الأفكار المعلبة التي تفتقد الدقة ، فعندي أن هؤلاء القوم تم استخدامهم من جميع أهل الأرض ( الغرب ، الأنظمة الشمولية ،الثورات ، الثورات المضادة ، الحركات المتطرفة... الخ ) وعندما تم توظيفهم في سياق براغماتي من بعض هذه الجهات ظهروا كبراغماتيين وانتهازيين والحق انهم قوم على (باب الله ) تجري الرياح فتجريهم معها . .
عموماً يمكن اعتبار الكتاب وثيقة هامة لتعرية سياسات الحكومات الغربية وتوضيح دورها في نشوء وتقوية التطرف الاسلامي والارهاب العالمي أو كما جاء في محاججة أحمد مطر الشهيرة لهم ..

نَسّـاجاً بِمِنـوالِكْ
و َمعـتاشا بأمـوالِكْ
وَمَحْمِيّـاً بأبطالِكْ .

This is a well-researched and well-documented account of British foreign policy and its connections to groups of the likes of al-Qaida. It is only regrettable that he did not make it a longer work and intertwine US foreign policy into the mix because the connections are demonstrable and very clear. This is not a comfortable read, but it is one that unveils a lot of the problems that confront the world today.

أما بريطانيا تواطأت عقوداً طويلة مع القوى الإسلامية المتطرفة، بما في ذلك التنظيمات الإرهابية، فقد تسترت عليها، وعملت إلى جانبها وأحياناً دربتها وموّلتها، بغية الترويج لأهداف محددة للسياسة الخارجية.
وصلت هذه الاستراتيجية البريطانية لسياسة فرّق تسد الاستعمارية، فبعض المسؤولين البريطانيين إبان الحرب وفيما بعدها كانوا يخشون أيضاً من أن الخلافة يمكن استخدامها نقطة تجمع وحشد للحركات المعادية للاستعمار، وكانوا بصفة خاصة يخشون من احتمال نشوب حرب إسلامية مقدسة ضد بريطانيا، إلى أن القادة البريطانيين كانوا يعتقدون أن الإسلام يمكن التلاعب به واستغلاله بشراء قيادته الدينية أو الاحتيال عليها..
ويرى سياسيو بريطانيا أن مصالحهم تتحقق على نحو أفضل بواسطة نظام استبدادي يحافظ على الاستقرار والارتباط بالغرب بأكثر مما تحققه ديمقراطية طليقة العنان تندفع منحدرة إلى الشيوعية والفوضى.
كان ذلك ملخصا رائعاً لتفضيل بريطانيا لأنظمة القمع التي يساندها اليمين الإسلامي، بدلاً من حكومات أكثر شعبية أو ديمقراطية وتلك سمة دائمة في سياسة بريطانيا في الماضي وفي الحاضر، تساعد في تفسير اللجوء المنتظم إلى التواطؤ مع القوى المتأسلمة.
وقد كانت لندن في التسعينيات من مراكز العالم الكبرى بالنسبة للجماعات الإسلامية المتطرفة على غرار الجماعة الاسلامية المسلحة الجزائرية، والجماعة الإسلامية الليبية المقاتلة، وجماعة الجهاد المصرية والقاعدة نفسها من خلال مكتبها، لجنة الشورى والإصلاح، وكانت كلها قد انشأت قواعد في لندن. كانت القاعدة تعتبر لندن المركز العصبي لعملياتها في أوروبا، وكان كثيرون من معاوني بن لادن الرئيسيين يعملون من هناك.

The only reason God tolerates historians is because they can do what he cant, alter the past.
This is precisely the reason why this book is so important when trying to fathom the ongoing relationship between Anglo-Britain and the Muslim world.
The narrative adopted by the British (circa 1914) to convince the Arabs, who had been ruled by the Ottoman Caliphate for around 400 years was simple.
You had been ruled only because we supported the Ottomans, but now if you help us take the Turks down, we will put you in-charge of a new Arab Caliphate to do as you please. With our support, you will reclaim your lost glory and establish a true Arab Caliphate with Madina as its capitol.
Any sane Arab might have asked the obvious fallacy in the argument. If the British were really the reason behind the Turk power then why did they need the help of a renegade Arab battalion to take them down? But I guess the Arabs were desperate to throw off Turk yoke and saw this invitation as God sent. And maybe the latest desire of some Arabs to establish an Islamic state (ISIS) is a continuation of the same unfulfilled dream?
Check out the conquest of modern Saudi Arabia by Ibn Saud. Roughly 400,000 people killed, while a million fled across neighboring lands as Ibn Saud did not take prisoners. Furthermore, in various uprisings against his tyrannous regime 35000 were publicly hanged while around 350,000 amputated. And guess which country was the first to recognize this new nation? Britain.
The other state created solely by the British to serve its purposes is Pakistan, which was to serve as a bit of Britain in India after the independence was given to India. According to the author both Saudi Arabia and Pakistan were created on the Islamic premise and therefore cannot avoid Islamic fundamentalism. I find it difficult to disagree with his analysis, although I am desperate to prove this theory wrong :(
Britain, in its desperation to hold on to its rapidly receding world influence after the Great Wars, has managed to some create ethically compromising relationships with the likes of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, Israel, Kuwait, Pakistan. The enormous amount of Capitol invested into Britain by the cash rich Saudis leaves no room for Britain to reprimand Saudis over its medieval policies of punishments like public be headings and limb cuttings. How can Britain castigate Pakistan over Islamisation with its own home based Jihadi issue with so many British Muslims choosing to fight in Iraq and Syria?
Affect reading the book I was surprised at the low level of terrorists actively operating in the world today when you consider the hundreds of thousands trained and supported by the British government alone. The support given to Islamic fundamentalists by TE Lawrence is a legacy which seems to percolate not only in the British Policy but has also been adopted by lackey states like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan with great enthusiasm.

عرفنا في الفترة الأخيرة أن تنظيمات مثل القاعدة وحديثا داعش تنظيمات صناعة غربية، كانوا يقولون لنا أنها لتشويه الإسلام ولا نعرف أي إسلام يقومون هم بتشويهه رغم أن أعضاء هذه التنظيمات كلها مسلمون تربوا علي أيدي الشيوخ الذين يدعون هذا الادعاء.
الكتاب يوضح الكثير جدا مما خفي، كنا اعتقدنا أن هذه التنظيمات الإسلامية المسلحة تعمل لصالح الغرب بجهل منها ومن قادتها، كنا نظن أنهم يعملون دون وعي منهم لصالح غيرهم، لكن الفاجعة أنهم كانوا يتعاونون معهم ويتلقون منهم المال والسلاح لتحقيق أغراضهم.

Fascinating exploration of the unintended consequences of working on the basis of my-enemy's enemies are my friends. Britain appears to have been merrily backing fundamentalist Islam against the Soviets for years and now has a serious problem with well armed and trained jihadists.

انا اعتقد ان الاسم الصحيح للكتاب كان لابد ان يكون "التاريخ السري لاستغلال الاسلاميين لسحق الديمقراطية"
ان استغلال الاسلاميين في الصراع الانجليزي الامريكي في بداية القرن العشرين ثم استخدامهم في مواجهة الاتحاد السوفيتي و في النهاية الوقوف في وجه الدول القومية و سحق القوى الوطنية و الديمقراطية.
انا لا أدري اهذا خلل في المنهج ام غياب في المنهج.
فخلق قوى اسلامية اقليمية تعمل كقواعد لنشر نسخة من الاسلام المقاتل الذي يخدم مصالح الدول الاستعمارية باستغلال الحاجات الروحية للشباب و الدوافع النبيلة في حين ان الانظمة الحاكمة لتلك القوى هي كلية العمالة للقوى العالمية.
يقول المفكر المصري محمد فتحي عثمان:
ان اخشى ما اخشاه ان نكسب معركة الدعاية و الجدال بشان صلاحية الاسلام حتى اذا اتت مرحلة التطبيق و التقنيين
اذا بالايدي خواء، و اذا بالقلوب و الافكار هواء.
فنفشل.
ان استغلال الاسلاميين في الصراع الانجليزي الامريكي في بداية القرن العشرين ثم استخدامهم في مواجهة الاتحاد السوفيتي و في النهاية الوقوف في وجه الدول القومية و سحق القوى الوطنية و الديمقراطية.

An explorative and thorough account of British Foreign policy and its shockwaves into the world of Islamic terrorism. Though the narrative is clear it does suffer occasionally from being too densely packed with information, often rendering the conclusions less impactful than they should be. Nevertheless, a powerful polemic against the conventional themes of overseas interventions and their stability producing promises.

Secret Affairs details the British exploits in the Middle East over the last 100 years and the British history of supporting radical Islam as a bulwark against Russia and Eurasia. That's all well and good, but the book never mentions communism or Sovietism as a threat, nor other governments using terror or supporting terror groups.

For an ordinary arab reader, this book might make him fall easily as a victim of conspiracy theory. The arab mind is fully engaged to the fake tales of masonism and world conspiracies and the myths generated by well known books like the protocols of the elders of zion. The latter book has occupied a significant space in the mentality of the general arab reader. no matter how rational the criticism by various arab intellectuals regarding the invalidity of this book (the protocls), it will always remain as a cornerstone in the thinking of the ordinary arab reader.
However, one can not deny that as far as I am concerned that the majority of the facts mentioned in this book are quite valid. the British involvement in middle eastern policy is quite scandalous. If we can put a single word to sum up the attitude of the British policy makers towards the Arab countries we can use the word (Hypocrisy).
British politicians were fully cognizant of the detrimental effects of siding with Islamic radicalism. Islamic radicalism is not only anathemas to the western economic interests, they are against the entire core values which not only represents the product of the western civilization, but it is considered a human heritage devoid of all the traits of chauvinism. the western civilization might be credited with unleashing the human mind from the shackles of the medieval mind, however it was based on the intellectual work of previous civilizations including the arab civilization.
British politicians deliberately allied themselves with the devils thinking that they are serving their own interests only. Nicollo Michaivelli would have been so proud of them, however, what they failed to grasp is that islamic radicalism will eventually backfire upon their own homelands. the modern world is like a single village. this is the consequence of globalization. you have deliberately smashed the aspirations of the middle eastern peoples for democratic and secular governments with human rights as their guiding light, in exchange for your economical interest.
The bright side of all these catastrophes is that history will never omit these eternal crimes.
I wish such a book be read by a wider section of young men and women in the middle east. such a book might change something for the better i hope.

The narrative in this book, doesn't come as surprise, that west has been cultivating and supporting extremism through out the world, no matter what, shape, region, religion & ethnicity it belongs to, just to save guard their own interests ruthlessly. To gain their dominance & to safeguard their financial interests, west never considered how many lives are on stake.
Through out the history, foes turned into friends and again foes.
The oil is the key factor in all the trouble Middle East is facing.
Several facts about the situation in Pakistan & Afghanistan are reported false in this book, and are either based on false assumptions or not taking into account the ground realities.
Overall a good read to see the naked game of power, greed & dominance being played by west, spearheaded by US & Britain, throughout the history and all over the world!

This isn't my favorite reading genre And this author writes mostly about what's "been said" about the relations of the British and the elements of "Radical" Islam (is there any other?). Both of which made this book a less than likeable book for me. I could have given it just an OK but thought about the review readers looking for exactly this book. Also, its recommended by the Promethean women when talking about how the British Monarchy really are Still Messing with the World Political Systems.

It really is all about the oil .
Superb book ,expertly researched and written ,..makes you realise that Britain has been hugely responsible for Islamic Terrorist groups and Extremism .We are led to believe that those ruling class men [and women] in their suits and ties that "work for us " [lol] in the Houses of Parliament who like to oppitomize clean cut "British honesty and fair play" are in reality often up to their necks in death and destruction in the Middle East and their words are so carefully chosen it means that they are actually expert manipulators at best and at worse downright liars ,[we know when our PM's and their governments lie because their lips move]. And almost all of our rulers are from the same expensive schools and university's as their forebears ,who raped the same land in the name of the British Empire a 100 years ago .
Apparently Saudi Arabia has spent 50 billion pounds on exporting Wahhabism around the world and clearly much of this has gone straight to the likes of AQ and ISIS ,and Saudi Arabia is our "best friend" we are also great mates with Pakistan ,these are the second biggest exporters of Terrorism its hardly a surprise that Britain was utterly humiliated in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars with "friends" like these ,and Londistan was the world wide hub of Jihadism throughout the 90's up until the mid 00's the deal was don't hurt us and well leave you alone ,clearly this idiocy failed spectacularly .This book makes me ashamed to be British .

Apparently Saudi Arabia has spent 50 billion pounds on exporting Wahhabism around the world and clearly much of this has gone straight to the likes of AQ and ISIS ,and Saudi Arabia is our "best friend" we are also great mates with Pakistan ,these are the second biggest exporters of Terrorism its hardly a surprise that Britain was utterly humiliated in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars with "friends" like these ,and Londistan was the world wide hub of Jihadism throughout the 90's up until the mid 00's the deal was don't hurt us and well leave you alone ,clearly this idiocy failed spectacularly .This book makes me ashamed to be British .
