Het geheim

Rate this book
Three storylines run through The Secret, like themes in a symphony, sometimes merging, sometimes overlapping, and sometimes going in different directions: this is the story of Wanda Wierickhe, the story of her past and the story of Bouw, the man she left.

Concert pianist Wanda Wiericke sees music as a way of escaping reality. It is her answer to questions about her place in the world. When forced to choose, she leaves her husband for it. But when her mother literally spits up "the secret" on her deathbed, Wanda is no longer able to withdraw into her music. A rheumatic disorder prevents her from playing: she does not touch a piano again until she has come to terms with her past.

Enquist offers no easy solutions. The book's climax does not come with the revelation of the secret, but in the process of coming to terms with it.

Second novel by Dutch author Anna Enquist (1945). This is clearly one for music aficionados. The main character, Wanda Wiericke, is a celebrated pianist (at least at one point in her life), and music is a central theme throughout the story. Yet it's certainly not the only theme. We follow Wanda through ever-changing timelines: from her youth in the 1930s to the narrator's present, perhaps the 1990s. The Holocaust is involved, as is a Mongoloid brother, a successful career as a pianist, a marriage and divorce, and finally, an illness that drives Wanda to retreat to the French Pyrenees.

An entire life in just over 200 pages, with a marked air of 'tristesse'. And with secrets. Not one, but several (the most important of which is actually quite predictable). Enquist is a very skilled writer, certainly, but the story's pace is a bit too fast, causing some passages and characters to not truly shine. For example, I found the brother's role rather pathetically passive, and Wanda’s ex-husband Bouw remains really superficial. With more pages, this story could have gained the depth it deserves. But it's certainly commendable. (Rating 2.5 stars).

From my Dutch collection I've chosen this time this lovely book by Anna Enquist.

This story is told by the author in a very excellent manner, with believable and lifelike characters, and the Netherlands from 1930s until 1990s are wonderfully described and pictured.

This book is about, Wanda Wiericke, a virtuoso on the piano playing classical music, inherited from her musical mother, but especially by het music teacher, Mr Max De Leon.

Very influential for Wanda will be her music teacher, Max De Leon, who will bring her into classical music with all its beauties and secrecies, before Max De Leon is deported during WWII by the Nazis to Auschwitz, never to be seen again, and this is witnessed by Wanda as a very young girl.

Between her parents, Egbert and Emma, everything will be in turmoil, especially after the deportation of Max De Leon, and their marriage will turn into hatred for each other after the birth of their mongol son, named, Frank.

For Wanda there's only music to live for and an important output of her talents, making it everything in her life, all the more so when personal relationships get stranded because of her inability to commune with people, followed by her marriage with Bouw Kraggenburg that will finally collapse after her miscarriage, she retreats to a life of music until her fingers and hands won't allow her to play anymore professionally.

At the end, after the cremation of her mother, Emma, Wanda will hear and learn from her aunt, Ida, who truly her biological father is and thus her inheritance of all that is called music.

Very much recommended to all who like a wonderful novel about someone obsession and love for classical music, which is also published in English (The Secret), in French (Le Secret) and in German (Die Erbschaft Des Herrn De Leon), and so I would like to call this very touching book: "A Remarkable Secret"!

Verschenen in 1997.

I re-read this one every couple of years. Very moving and easy to identify with if you play the piano yourself, but I think it's probably just as enjoyable even if you don't play music. There's different layers to this story that I continue to enjoy: the love for music and not being able to live without, the love story between the main character Wanda and her husband, the mentor-pupil relationship between her and her teacher, the war and its unimaginable cruelties, etc. Describing it like this just makes me want to read it again.

I really liked the way she built up tension and made me feel like I was on the edge of my seat, even though this isnt a thriller or an action novel. But, Bouw's perspective was boring and the ending let me down a little. Other than that: great story and writing style

ECHT EEN MOOI BOEK MAN.
