Blue Awakening: A Nickey Monroe Legal Mystery

Rate this book
Sawgrass was supposed to be a peaceful retreat...

The Colorado mountain town of Sawgrass was supposed to bring peace to career trial attorney and judge Nickey Monroe, who had recently been widowed. But when a judge calls in a favor, she finds herself defending Blue Daniels, a woman whose past is entangled with the state's Governor and a shocking scandal. As Nickey digs deeper, she uncovers a conspiracy far more dangerous than a simple theft, with powerful enemies willing to manufacture evidence and silence anyone who gets in their way. Can this reluctant retiree navigate a treacherous legal battle and protect her client from forces that play for keeps?

With fabricated evidence, a client who knows too much, and powerful officials desperate to keep a lid on a three-year-old affair, Nickey must unearth the truth before it buries her client—and perhaps, herself. "Blue Awakening" is a gripping legal thriller where nothing is as it seems, and the price of justice might just be more than anyone bargained for.

With a sexist, arrogant prosecutor on her heels and a loyal dog by her side, Nickey and her legal team, consisting of Barton Griggs, her long-time investigator and cowboy poet, and Dr. Will David, an old friend and forensics expert, must fight for justice before the powerful win out. And in the midst of the court case, Nickey might awaken to a new love.

Small towns harbor dark secrets, and some people will do anything to keep them buried.

What a fun, interesting group of characters from this small town. Colorado is beautiful and this place would be a wonderful place to be. Talk about life transitions as you get older is so spot on. I’m there and Nickey, the main character, is so real. In fact, I’d like to know more about all of these folks and this place. I attribute this feeling to reading it in one sitting and wishing it continued. The story helped me to be settled in and be curious about life for these people in this small town. They are quite capable of having their own unique take but seem to live and let live gracefully. I want more people like them in my life. Oh, wait, they’re in my life now and some are a lot more real than some of the characters who fill the news cycle every day. I highly recommend this book and hope the next installment comes out very soon.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It kept my interest.
Being from Colorado, I found the descriptions of Sawgrass true to what I remember of small mountain towns.
The story flows well and is very realistic in its portrayal of the justice system.
I also appreciated the fact that Nickey was portrayed as an "older" woman who has the chutzpah to be true to herself and to her heart.
I am looking forward to the next installment.

This is a wonderful cozy mystery! I found myself captivated by the small town rhythms and the story was intriguing and surprising.
The characters are well drawn and I particularly enjoyed the cowboy poetry that accompanied the sleuthing.
I understand this is the first book in a series and look forward to more mysteries with Nickey, Bart, and of course, Harley the dog!
