His Doll: A Dark Romance Novel

Rate this book
When perfection becomes prison, and submission becomes survival.

Grace

I've spent my life following rules. My parents' rules, society's rules, the suffocating expectations that have shaped every breath I've taken. Sheltered and controlled, I've never known what it means to truly choose. Until choice is ripped away entirely.

I wake up in darkness, bound and helpless, selected for something far worse than my worst nightmares. I'm to become a "Doll". A perfectly trained, utterly obedient companion for the wealthy and depraved. But as terror gives way to something darker, I find myself drawn to the very man breaking me apart. His praise becomes my oxygen, his touch both torment and salvation. In the depths of my captivity, I begin to crave the very submission that should destroy me.

Mikhail

I have perfected the art of breaking beautiful things. As the Morozov syndicate's most skilled trainer, I transform stolen men and women into flawless Dolls, living toys crafted for their masters' darkest desires. I tell myself I'm saving them, that my brutal methods ensure their survival in a world that would otherwise consume them. Each Doll I create is a masterpiece, but none have ever been mine to keep.

Then she arrives, and everything changes. Her natural submission calls to something primal in me, something that remembers the boy who once cherished dolls before the world taught him they could be broken. For the first time, I face an impossible complete the training that will send her to another man's bed, or risk everything to claim the one Doll I can never let go.

Can Grace find freedom in surrender? Will Mikhail choose duty over desire?

When love blooms in the darkest places, who decides what's worth saving?

A pitch-black romance where the line between savior and destroyer disappears, and the most dangerous cage is the one you learn to love.

Coming up 5 weeks without internet! 🛜 it literally feels like the end of the world!!

Ok onto this book, I’d had me eyes on this one, so had preordered it and was happy when it landed on my trusty life saving iPad!!

I had such high hopes for this book, I was hoping it was something in the lines of pepper winters, kidnapped, trafficked, the beginning gave me hope, it was dark, depraved, but then it started to shift, she gave up so easily, maybe she fought towards the end but I gave up over half way. It started off with a bang, then it felt stilted and rushed, I felt no connection with the heroine or her circumstances.

This is how I felt, others enjoyed this.

For me, I need more fight from the victim, she craved a connection and I think it was bound to happen with her trainer, praise seemed to be all it took.

I enjoyed this book overall, it is definitely Stockholm Syndrome all the way. It starts off pretty dark with the Bratva who trains "dolls" to be sold. The trainer Mikhail falls for Grace and she in turns falls for him. While the story still kept darker tones throughout, it had a happy ending with Mikhail burning down the world for her.

I do feel it the darker tone of the book didn't stay throughout, maybe ended up a dark gray :) at the end. BUT, I really enjoyed the book and would recommend if you are looking for a dark book with a HEA.

This book definitely skirts the line. What line you ask? All the the lines! This book and series explores Stockholm syndrome. The first book in the series starts off with a bang. Please read the triggers before starting this one. It is always good for readers to be prepared. Grace Foster is kidnapped on a college campus. She wakes up in a place she has never been. She has been deprived of all her senses and forced to listen and remember rules about being a doll. Grace was kidnapped to be a human doll for someone. She is now in the hands of a trainer.

Mikhail Orlov has worked for the Morozov bratva family as a trainer for years. In fact, he is the one that came up with this program. He takes great pride in training the dolls. He loves each one in some way. Unfortunately, Mikhail is not worthy of a doll. It especially hurts when he meets the new Doll. Grace has been trained to be submissive from a young age. She was taught to obey by her mother. It was like Grace was meant to be a doll. Mikhail knows he cannot have a doll but cannot help hoping he could make Grace his. His doll forever.

That's all I am going to give you. You would not believe me if I told you what else happens in this book. I enjoyed exploring Stockholm syndrome. It has always been interesting to me. Don't let me get you feeling all warm and fuzzy. This book is dark from the beginning to the end. Mikhail puts Grace through a lot. Will Grace finish her training to be the perfect doll? This book is pretty good. Ms. Svoboda makes readers understand both Grace and Mikhail's feelings without looking down on them. Readers will respect the way the characters feel about the things happening. I am excited about this series. I can't wait to read the next book.

I read this book as an ARC reader.

So this book was different from any other books that i have read.

I actually liked the shift that took place in the mindset of the main characters. And how two messed up characters actually find comfort in each other.

You definitely need to read the trigger warnings, because this really is a dark book.

This was an ... interesting book. DEFINITELY dark. I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was interesting to see the obsession develop and the mindest of the characters. I really liked the book. It had more torture-ish things that I dont particularly care for, but nothing to stop me from reading. I've never read a book like this so the concept was interesting! I didnt particularly like the last chapter.. but that's okay. Overall a good book.

Okay, so I just finished this book, and I have THOUGHTS. I have a lot of feelings, and I need to talk about His Doll by Anna Svoboda. Strap in, because this is NOT a casual read.

First, a huge, flashing, neon TRIGGER WARNING sign. This book goes to some dark, dark places. I’m not just talking about a little angst. I’m talking a deep, psychological, gothic rabbit hole where the lines of obsession and possession don’t just blur—they’re completely obliterated. Read the trigger warnings. Seriously. I’m not kidding. Read them. TWICE. Also, fair warning: this book doesn’t leave you when you walk away. It sits in the back of your mind, like a heavy, powerful shadow.

Okay, so… the book. Imagine the worst day of your entire effing life. Now imagine that day never ends. That’s where we meet Grace. She doesn’t just get in a bad situation; she wakes up in a special kind of hell. The story doesn’t give her a way out, just a choice: break or bend.

But Grace? She’s a gee-dee survivor. She’s been broken and remade by life so many times that her first, chilling instinct isn't to fight her new "captor"—it's to bend. To survive. Her immediate, pragmatic, soul-crushing submission is the book's first, and biggest, gut-punch.

Her "captor" is Mikhail. He’s not your mustache-twirling cartoon villain. He’s a collector, a man who finds beauty in breaking things. He’s prepared for a fight from Grace. He expects it, and I think that perhaps he even wants it. What he doesn't expect is her quiet, chilling, and total surrender. It’s a complete curveball that throws his whole plan—and his mind—into chaos.

We get to live inside his head, and it is a deeply unnerving place to be. It’s a slow, methodical, and terrifying look into a very, very dark point of view. It will make your skin crawl in the best (worst?) way.

This isn't a story where a knight in shining armor shows up. It’s not a rescue. It’s a story of endurance. Grace’s spirit is a blade, not a shield. She doesn't break under pressure; she sharpens. And Mikhail, who is used to his "dolls" being, well, breakable, is completely thrown. He’s a connoisseur of suffering, and Grace’s quiet resilience is a puzzle he can't seem to solve. She becomes a mirror held up to his own monstrousness, leaving him both repelled and obsessed.

The alternating, first-person perspectives of Grace and Mikhail are exceptionally well-executed. The dual narrative provides a complex, Rashomon-like view of the same events, revealing the characters' internal contradictions, self-deceptions, and unspoken desires. Their distinct voices are clear and consistent.

That said, my one quibble is a small point of linguistic authenticity. As a native Russian speaker, Mikhail would almost certainly struggle with English articles ('a,' 'an,' 'the'), often omitting or misusing them, as this is a classic marker of the Russian language in English.

The ending is not a fairytale. It’s a raw, disturbing, and strangely perfect resolution for these two characters. It’s the only ending that could possibly make sense after the journey they’ve been on.

Overall, I’d have to say that His Doll is a VERY erotic and dark, psychological labyrinth. It’s brutal, intense, and it pushes every boundary imaginable. You’re not just reading about this messed-up, twisted dance between captor and captive—you are bearing witness. It’s a showcase that demonstrates how a human spirit can be bent but not shattered, and how that, in itself, can be a powerful, terrifying force.

I read an advance copy of this book, and this is my totally honest, completely unsettled opinion. If you’ve got the stomach for an intense, psychological, and masterfully disturbing story, this one will stick with you. I absolutely LOVED it. Just mind the trigger warnings. I mean it.

This is an extremely dark romance with heavy themes and is not for all readers. Grace wakes up in a deeply dark situation with only two choices: panic or submit. Because of her past, Grace understands that sometimes acceptance is the safest option, and that realization was absolutely heartbreaking. She lived a life so cruel that submitting to what was happening felt normal to her.

Mikhail is accustomed to watching these “dolls” go through the process, but Grace’s immediate submission fascinates him. His thought process and actions are deeply disturbing. While I understand that some people are drawn to pain, the way he repeatedly inflicts it until someone breaks felt truly masochistic and unsettling.

Although I have read darker books, what Grace goes through here is not for the lighthearted. Several scenarios are intense and genuinely made me squirm. Mikhail puts her through unimaginable trials, yet that very resilience is what ultimately draws him to her. Grace never backs down and constantly strives to please him, even under horrific circumstances.

I did not expect the story to go where it ultimately went, but I loved that it did. For many reasons, the ending felt right for Mikhail. There were moments where I felt deeply for Grace, especially when she felt lost and alone, but everything came full circle in the end. This is an extremely dark read, emotionally heavy and disturbing, but also surprisingly impactful. I received this book as an ARC and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

I want to consume you whole so that we could never be separated again.

“During your training, compliance will be rewarded. Rewards may vary.”

Grace- has always been controlled and sheltered by her parents. Suddenly wakes up after being taken and is a "doll" for the rich and powerful 😳

Mikhail- one of the trainers of the men and women who have have been
k!dnapped to become the "dolls." His job is to prepare and mold them.

If you enjoy Stockholm syndrome then this is for you! Or if you're interested in dipping your toe into the pitch black ish genre I also recommend this one! This is mixed with unhinged, eye popping, jaw dropping, and morbid moments but still filled with the awww, cuddly, tender (well kinda 🤣) moments too. Nice balance.

I thought the author did a great job with the mindset of both characters and having us really able to understand why they are the way they are. I found myself nodding a lot and saying yea, I get why you think that 🤣 I'm also glad Mikhail stayed authentic throughout this entire book.

I personally loved everything about this one. Pacing was excellent, premise was awesome, well balanced. I even found myself rooting for Mikhail (I prob need a therapist for that but I'll unpack that later) overall, I devoured this and LOVED it. I'm totally looking forward to Cams story! And I will also add I'm so freaking happy this didn't end on a cliffhanger!!! It wrapped up nicely 🖤

Thank you for my ARC! I'm leaving this review voluntarily

His Doll is a dark romance story with dark, heavy themes. You need to check the trigger warning with this one before getting into it. That being said, this was an intense ride!
Grace wakes up feeling tied down, unable to move or see. She can hear rules though, or instructions of some sort explaining to her that she is now in training as a doll. Not following the rules will result in discipline and the best thing for her to do is comply.
Grace becomes one of the most obedient dolls Mikhail has had and through his tenderness during training, Grace seems to develop a severe case of Stockholm. Mikhail starts to fall for her too, but he tries to hold his feelings back but he knows, dolls are not for him. His job is to train them and send them off. But he wants this one and decides e will do whatever it takes to keep her.
I really enjoyed this story. It shows how twisted Stockholm really can be. But also, Grace's home life wasn't much to miss either. Her parents made me so angry, I almost wished Mikhail would have taken care of them too.
If you like your stories dark and twist, this is definitely one to check out!!

This book was really hard to decide on a star rating for. This might not be too dark for some people who are really into dark romance books, but for me it was DARK and I discovered I don't want to read anything darker than this. I don't know what I was expecting for a story about a sadist human trafficker and his victim, but I really liked the author's other books in her Stockholm Syndrome for the Win series so I guess I thought this would be similar.

However, all of the spicy scenes felt more like torture scenes, the characters decided they needed each other before they knew anything about each other including their names. I really really didn't like how the MMC liked to hurt the FMC; he wanted her pain, tears, and screams. I definitely prefer stories where the MMC is dark for everyone but the FMC and won't hurt her; this is definitely not that type of story.

Considering a majority of the story was just the two main characters in an underground room together, I was never bored. Although I would run screaming from the MMC, I'm glad the main characters managed to find what they needed in each other.

I absolutely loved the way this was written. So dark and twisted, actually batshit honestly. You can tell both MC’s are so brainwashed that their situation makes the most perfect sense for them. The MMC is the most sadist MMC I’ve ever encountered so far. The MMC is also not that morally grey, don’t get me wrong he is. The situation itself is more morally grey than he is. He’s just a product of his environment. On the FMC, her character and this book only works because of how she was raised. Had she not been raised the way she was the book would have felt much darker, because it would have felt more forced. Overall, loved. It was done well. Tasteful for the topic it’s about.

My @smutfiles rating:
Spice scenes - 5 Language- 5 Kinks- 4-5 Taboo- 5 (idk honestly)

This one certainly packs a punch from the first chapter. A dark book, at least per my definition, so ensure you are okay with the TWs and read to your comfort level. Very interesting concept -- Doll, Grace, and her Doll Trainer, Mikhail. He has the Doll making process down to an art form and has contingency plans in place for the different Dolls' responses when released from orientation. I'm not sure if it is Stockholm Syndrome that frames her outlook, strategic compliance, or that she actually relishes the outcome and sinks into the submission persona naturally. A very interesting read with very detailed scenarios that even I could not imagine if left to my own creative mind.

Loved it

This book is about as fucked up as it gets and that’s exactly why I fucking loved it. If you’re not into non-con, do not read this. You’ll hate it. But if you’re a freak like me who lives for this kind of depraved darkness, you’ll be soaking your panties.

I love the torture mixed with cuddles (fake, obviously). Real spanking is one of my favorite tropes, and I hate books where they spank once and suddenly everyone’s coming. This is definitely not that kind of book. It’s hardcore BDSM non-con. I only wish it last longer. Read the trigger warnings and love every second of it.

If you love weak pathetic women, this book is definitely for you. I’ve DNF’d this at 21%, the story line seemed like it could be really good but it’s just so unrealistic I don’t even want to carry on reading. FMC is kidnapped, wakes up tied down with sex toys in her and gets electrocuted. She is told she is going to be trained to be the perfect doll for her master which, let’s be real, would scare the shit out of even the toughest person but no, no no no - this FMC gives into her captor after just a little bit of praise. Very disappointing book.

*I read this book as an ARC reader*

This book starts with a boom and it just keeps on going. I had a hard time putting it down and all I wanted was to keep reading it.
You know when your mind goes "oh, it doesn't get better than this!"? Well, it does.
I love the length of each chapter, making "just one more chapter" possible.
Grab your blanket, a cup of something nice to drink, check the trigger warnings and remember... you're never too old to play with Dolls.

His Doll is a VERY dark book romanticizing Stockholm Syndrome. It was written so well, kept my attention and made me want more all while thinking “Should I be reading this”. Mikhail and Grace seemed to be a perfect fit. He trained her to be the perfect sex doll, though she didn’t need much. I ended up very much enjoying this book.

Super awkward and stilted language, strange switching of character’s personalities and motives really quickly. For such a long book it was strange to have the characters change so abruptly and completely. Almost a dnf, but I kept going but I have some regrets on that. I had seriously considered stopping at 47% because I didn’t think I would enjoy it any more and I was right, but stubborn.

I have read a few books from this author, and this is my favourite to date. Listed as a dark romance, it is dark, but not pitch black (for me anyway). Certainly need to check your triggers warnings. My mind is just warped.
The fmc loses her whole identity when she is captured and turned into a living doll. The mmc has psychopathic tendencies dating back to a young age, but somehow, through it all falls in love with his captive. It's twisted, it's Stockholm adjacent and probably not true love in the respect of a normal romance, but it works, and I loved every moment of it. But seriously, check your triggers if you are someone who needs them.
