The plot holes! The stupid decisions!

I was really excited for this book but I just was not live laugh loving it. The initial vibe of this book was silly goofy rom com and then things became insanely melodramatic. The addition of the blackmail/stalker plot just felt out of place and I was not a fan. The insane melodrama was basically the last straw for me since I found Oli’s POV kinda poorly written in comparison to Niko. I was also baffled by the illogical nature of the set up. If Oli has spent like a year doing promo for this film from the book publishers end there is no way he wouldn’t recognize Niko. It’s just an insane set up that could have easily been remedied if you had Oli work for the publisher but not on this specific movie. I think that because this book was self published it just really needed a developmental editor to smooth out all the problem spots.
I was super bummed that this didn’t work for me because Laura’s first book, The Sins on Their Bones, is one of my fave books of the year. Maybe I’ll try to finish this book again another time, but for now this is a DNF.
Also authors PLEASE stop comparing your books to Red, White and Royal Blue when they are not tonally similar. RWRB is a rom com through and through and all the books I’ve read recently that have comped it are high melodrama. The only accurate comp I’ve read is The Prospects which has the same POV/tense, has a rivals to lovers element, and is a rom com with a self actualization element. If your book isn’t doing one of those three things STOP COMPING IT! Just because your book is M/M that doesn’t mean that it’s similar to RWRB.

Notting Hill but make it VERY GAY and add more drama. I absolutely devoured this book, could not put it down. Hooked from start to finish, I already know this book is going to go down a TREAT!!! Another one for the priority tbr guys!
Also did not expect to have tears in my eyes at one point towards the end? AHHH just so gooood. Equal parts entertaining and heartfelt.

This was my first read from Ben Alderson and Laura R Samotin, their debut into contemporary romance and it was spot on. They really have created something amazing together.
Another first for me as this was my first read with two male main characters and let me tell you, I was all in!
Oli is such a kind and caring character with a lot of love to give. He is very likeable and relatable so when he gets his heart broken you feel it right in your core.
Nikos' has a complicated past and this causes some inner turmoil leaving him with social anxiety and causing him panic attacks. There's certainly a lot of demons in his closet and a sadness that is covered up with his ability to act.
From the first chapter I was hooked and wanting more. The character development from the first meet and throughout was beautifully executed and had me giddy and excited. it definitely feels like they can conquer anything as long as they are together.
There is mystery and suspense with some very comedic moments which brings the right amount of light and shade. The spice hit perfectly and at times I felt like a voyeur getting a front row seat to the show.
I would definitely recommend this book and want to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this before it goes out into the world.

Full of spicy goodness and topped with cheese -- just like the best kind of comfort food!
Perfect for holidays, lazy days in bed, or when curled up on the couch sick like I've been. Oli and Nikos captured my heart and took me through all the same fun, drama and swoon-worthy escapades you'll find in your favourite rom-coms.

First of all, thank you so much, authors Ben Alderson and Laura R. Samotin, for the ARC if your new novel! It's such an honour to be one of the people who get to read your book before its release!
For the first 2 or 3 chapters, I was really trying to figure out who write which character's POV, and I thought I'd found several clues (linguistics, vocabulary mostly, but also mentions of The Little Mermaid as well as the phrase "a sin I'd happily have worn into my bones", undoubtedly a reference to Samotin's upcoming book), but then I got so focused on the story that I completely forgot to keep looking! I found both Oli and Nikos to be fascinating characters that I instantly cared about and I just couldn't focus on anything else other than the story in front of me!
Oli is such a darling character. He loves to read and works with a publisher and gets to be surrounded by other people who love books all day long—honestly he's living my dream life. He's also so kind and caring, even towards strangers, and I love him for that! And I absolutely hated Geoff for hurting Oli and how that messed him up!
Nikos' struggles with anxiety and panic attacks is all too relatable for me. I couldn't help but thinking about that time a kind stranger helped me through a panic attack in a very public place, and I was so happy to see that depicted in literature. It's clear he's got lots of trauma in his past and that's really messed him up—but despite that, I loved how Nikos was able to completely be himself–to become himself–around Oli. It was beautiful to witness!
From the moment they met, I loved the chemistry between the characters and how they just work together. They have incredible banter too—on multiple occasions, they made me laugh out loud! The spicy scenes were really well written and not at all cringy; I was just sat here wanting all good things for the characters for the rest of forever because it's so clear that they're just meant to be together!
All in all, this is a delightful contemporary romance, with comedic and dramatic elements. There was some amazing suspense, and despite knowing there would be a "happily ever after" (just from it being a romance novel), I was so tense and screaming internally every time it seemed like the characters wouldn't end up with each other!!
I loved everything about The Actor and His Secret, and I read it in one sitting, finishing it at 2:30am. This is definitely a must-read for fans of MM contemporary romance novels!
I annotated a lot as I read this story, so I'll leave you with a quote that I absolutely loved:
"If there's something I can offer you, it's a safe space. Somewhere for you to put your secrets."

Unfortunately this book didn’t work for me because:
- kinda insta love/obsession
- the unbelievable meet-cute (no way did he not recognize him)
- the worst nickname ever (I actually cringed every time I had to read it)
- stupid stupid decisions made because clear thinking was apparently not available (why communicate when you can lie?)
- too much sex (that’s just my ace a**)
After 50% I had enough because I’m tired of stupid MCs for the sake of drama.
I don’t wanna deal with this kind of stupidity anymore in my books because it just makes me mad. And the melodrama was just unnecessary.
Skimmed the rest.

Like many of the books I read I picked this one up on a whim. I like going into books not knowing a single thing about them. When I pick a new book on my e-reader the only thing I'll check if it's not part of a series, cause again... I know nothing of the books going in. I have, however, read other books by Ben Alderson and have always liked those. It's fascinating to me when I'm only familiar with an author in a certain genre and then get presented with another. I've only read fantasy books written by Ben Alderson, so the contemporary spin was a surprise. Not a bad one, just to be clear.
I'm not familiar with Laura R. Samotin's work nor do I know how the writing was divided between the two but the writing style felt very natural and familiar. It was a relatively quick read. I think the characters were interesting and complex, and the main plot didn't hinge on miscommunication. We love to see that. People who have read my reviews before know that miscommunication is on my "bad tropes that need to die" list and I'll say it loud and proud. Sadly it's also a crutch of many contemporary romance books. So no worries, it's not present. There's a bit of lack of communication but for valid reasons to a point when you take into account the trauma the characters have been through and their general personalities. It's not a "We don't talk about it because the plot needs this to be a secret a bit longer" and those kinds of non-communications I can respect.
I do have an issue with the book and it's a bit of a doozy. If you read the content warnings I label on my reviews, you might have noticed the "addiction" tag and it never gets addressed or resolved or talked about on a deeper level. It's something we have to assume gets resolved after the final chapter (before the time-skip) and that just doesn't sit right to me. We have a main character who is drinking A LOT, who openly talks to his manager about being addicted and non-sober, and yet... And we could say "Oh, it's to show later on how far he has come when he's in a relationship, to show the growth of our main protagonist." But it's not. Quite late in the books when things are unraveling, there's a scene where he has drunken 6 whisky glasses. Six. That to me shows very clearly that even with all the love in the world, this addiction is serious and it needs to be addressed better than it was in the book. When Oli and Nikos are fighting so Nikos can't rely on Oli to calm him down, what do you think will happen?
I don't think the authors put too much thought in this addiction character trait and that's sad. It's such a common addiction, a lot of people struggle with it and I wish it was handled better in the book.

This is review is for the audio version of the book.
I listened to The Actor and His Secret in chunks of time instead of my usual straight through experience for two reasons. One is that I knew heartbreak was ahead and can only handle so much angst and sadness at a time (that's on me) and Two, Jay Alder's narration drove me crazy! I think Jay Alder was the voice actor for Niko Ridge. If it I mixed up the two voice actors I sincerely apologize! I think it's fabulous to have two human voice actors tell a story.
I love Alder's gravely sexy Niko voice - absolutely perfect for a Greek 'Adonis' of a man. However, when Alder voiced Stephanie, his agent and friend, or Oliver, the narrator's voice became really loud, stilted, and stuffy and just awful! I had to constantly adjust the volume on my headphones because Alder's voice got so loud and strident for anyone but Niko or his father that it actually hurt my ears!!! Here's an example of the stilted quality to listen for: when Niko took Oliver to his childhood home in Greece and shared the traumatic story of his mother's death, Oliver's voice was not comforting or loving at all. It was stilted and smug and arrogant. Talk about ruining the scene!! In addition to being strident for other characters, Alder's volume dropped really low for Niko's deep gravel, so low that I had to turn the volume UP to hear what Niko was saying!! Actually had to rewind for goodness sake! Very frustrating to say the least. I actually blame part of the problem on the editors. Don't they put on headphones and listen to the narration??
So between angst and bitter frustration at the constant need to adjust volume and the discordant voices, I had to break up my listening to an otherwise very good book in order to finish. No complaints about Derek Duvall's voices. His Oliver was perfect and decent for the other characters.
I recommend the story but just be prepared to change volume constantly.

I received an E-ARC from the authors, and this is my honest review
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of "The Actor and His Secret" by Ben Alderson and Laura R. Samotin, and let me tell you, it was a total delight. From the beginning, I completely devoured the story of Oli and Nikos. Their tale was so captivating that I couldn't put my Kindle down.
Oli's love for books had me liking him right away, given my own love for books, especially Romances. And Nikos, with his struggles and past trauma, felt so real and I just wanted to hug him and say it's okay. Their connection was instant from the moment they met, and seeing their relationship grow was beautiful. The banter and the humor between them kept things light, while their intimate moments were beautifully written and added depth to their bond.
I saw myself go through a rollercoaster of emotions as I spent staying up, way past my bedtime just to find out what would happen next. Even though with the premise of a happy ending, the authors managed to make me feel more and more curious as the pages flipped, rooting for Oli and Nikos every step of the way.
Overall, "The Actor and His Secret" is a wonderful blend of humor, drama, and romance and of course spicy as hell. It's the kind of book that sticks with you long after you've finished it, and I couldn't recommend it enough, especially if you're a fan of secret romances.

A Joyfully Jay review.

The plot for The Actor and His Secret felt disjointed, and depended a LOT on the characters never having a real conversation. Nikos is, by all accounts, a sloppy drunk. Yet, he’s able to be fully functional without any alcohol when he’s around Oli. Sorry folks, substance abuse is a real thing that requires actual treatment. Instead, it’s treated like temporary body odor that can be resolved with a good shower. The jetting off to Greece was right out of left field–and staying in Nikos’ abandoned homestead without any recognition from the locals felt untenable.
I don’t usually say this, but I think I would have liked this one marginally better as a book, versus the audio. But, even without considering the audio, I wasn’t really keen on the story. It was okay, but not one I’d choose to listen to often or again.

As soon as I got the link for the ARC, I DEVOURED this book.
Nikos. Seeing him, this hot rich movie star, have anxiety and hate crowds… I felt so much for him, how broken he seemed to be. Able to put on a smile and never truly be himself was disheartening.
Oli. Oh man, he is my kinda guy! Book lover, getting his dream job. Only to be hurt by his horrible long term boyfriend. The amount of hate I have for his ex is ridiculous. But Oli can sure take care of himself!
These two. Their meeting was absolutely brilliant, perfect for them. Once they were together, you just know they’re meant for each other. Even though it was only “for a night,” as readers, we know what that means ha!
I loved their dynamic and their banter. Ugh and those names?!? Don’t get me started!
I think what I loved the most was even though Nikos had secrets and a difficult past, he allowed Oli to SEE him, truly see him. They just worked. Plain and simple.
I’m sorry I’m not very good at writing reviews, so just know this. I highly recommend this book if you love watching an honest to goodness beautiful man be shattered and put back together again by the love of his life- even when they don’t want to admit it. I loved it 🥰

The Actor and His Secret is THE ultimate summer read!

The only thing I wish is that I was on that same beach in Greece while reading this delightful story.

idk what’s wrong with me but i got more annoyed with every chapter. i found both main characters pathetic and unlikable.
i don’t like when main characters have a partner in the beginning of the book who’s clearly not a final love interest. i love them more with a “clean slate”. and it was so typical that they “got rid of” said partner by making him cheat on mmc.
i didn’t like nikos. all he did was whine and feel sorry for himself.

Overall I enjoyed this co-written mm contemporary romance from Laura and Ben!
You definitely need to suspend some of your beliefs to buy into the premise that Oli doesn’t recognize Nikos on their first evening together. But once we get past that, it’s a lovely read.
I really loved the two of them spending time together. Especially on their Greek getaway.
And that ending and declarations and how sweeet?? I loved it!
I am looking forward to what these two will bring us next!!

I am so happy I had the opportunity to read this book. It was phenomenal. I thought the characters were so fun and overall a super fun read! I really hope to see more collaborations between these two authors because they truly did do an amazing job together!!

The Actor and His Secret ⭐️⭐️⭐️
the mcs were kinda dumb and unlikeable for me, but it was cute at times and I love the dynamic of movie actor x book publisher that was really fun to read, I just did not care for either of these men sorry!!

This book really crushed me! One moment I was having all these happy thoughts about what they could be and then the next minute it’s ripped right out from under me because of how forbidden everything was. This was such a heart throb to read and I would do it all over again! Somehow I was picturing Ben Alderson himself as Oli because that’s just how I imagined he would be like IRL? If that makes sense? Although there were dark themes to this book, it was lightened with cute and tender moments that really made me swoon. With all of Adonis’s demons haunting him, I just love how he came out on top in the end, and on top of Oli 🤭 Bahaha! Loved this book!

I was given an ARC of this book, this is my honest review:
As a fan of Ben Alderson's I went into this book expecting to like it, I loved it. I haven't read anything else of Laura's but am looking forward to diving in to her work now. This book was a departure from Ben's usual genre but I was excited to see how he handled a contemporary romance and co-writing with another author. I couldn't tell who wrote which part and I love that about a good co-written book.
The book itself... Please, please check the trigger & content warnings before reading this book. There are darker passages and things that could be hard for people to read. However the authors provide a comprehensive list of triggers and content warnings and I felt safe and prepared to read the book.
The characters:
Nikos... you beautiful, grumpy disaster. Watching you struggle with your past, with your present, with your need for love but feelings of being unworthy of it broke my heart for you. But watching you fall for Oli was an absolute delight even when you did things, thinking you were protecting him, that made me want give you hard shake. Your growth though not linear or easy was lovely.
Oli, you sweet adorable sunshine of a man. How could Nikos not fall for you? You're beautiful soul and willingness to fight for Nikos, to see him for who he was and love him anyway was absolutely beautiful. I loved watching you fall for him even knowing it might lead to heartbreak. Watching your pain and anguish over how things went in your life hurt but in the end it was worth it, wasn't it?
The side characters: I love, love, love Megan and Selina, the way both of them were there for Oli & Nikos respectively while also navigating their own budding background relationship was amazing. Nikos's father... I despise this man but I also pity him. I don't know who or what hurt this man to the point that he became the monster he is but it's sad and a little pathetic. Geoff, a pox on your house dude. You were such a horrible boyfriend and Oli is so much better off without you!
The Story itself - Oli is a book publicist working on the movie adaption of a book that sounds a bit like Fourth Wing meets Witcher and on opening night meets a man having a panic attack in the bathroom. They leave together and have a steamy night with Oli completely unaware that the man is actually Nikos, the star of the movie! After their night together neither can stop thinking about each other and start a rather whirlwind romance that is hot and spicy and also achingly sweet at times. But Nikos is hiding deep, dark secrets, ones he is certain will ruin his life, his career, and put Oli in danger.
The story is amazing, Nikos's struggles and guilt are heart wrenching, and Oli's fear and worry are painful to experience but both of them fight for each other, or do their best to fight to protect each other even at their own expense. The resolution happens a breakneck speeds but so does their romance really and when the actor his secret truly earns its name by revealing said secrets? Absolutely incredible.
This book was an emotional roller coaster dotted with intense emotions, incredibly hot sex scenes and a resolution that left me with tears of joy. I hope Ben & Laura collaborate again soon. Cannot wait to see what's next from both of them separately and together (if they decide to keep writing together).

A contemporary M/M romance between Oliver (Oli), a publicist for a publishing company, and Nikos, lead actor in the movie adaptation of one of that publisher's books.
I've really only been reading romance for less than a year, so I'm someone who's still exploring which authors I enjoy, which tropes are my favorite, etc. This book mixes celebrity romance, secret romance, and adds mystery/intrigue as the plot goes on. The mystery aspect partly hinges on Oli and Nikos not knowing details about each others' pasts, but I don't think this veers into miscommunication trope territory, which I know is unpopular with some readers They just aren't mind readers and the relationship is too new for it to be reasonable to have shared everything.
Oli and Nikos each have some emotional baggage from past romantic or family relationships. Added to that is the complication that Nikos is not out about his orientation because he feels it may impact his career, a situation I wish was well in the past for actors, but sadly I'm sure still comes into play for many. The book sensitively deals with mental health issues, from panic attacks, one of which is how Oli and Nikos meet, to dealing with past trauma. The characters were both likeable enough that I was rooting for their happy ending, not wondering what they saw in each other. The settings were also a plus in this book, with Nikos living in New York, Oli in London, and an idyllic sun-drenched trip to Greece. From the romances I've read so far, I'd put this at the spicier end of the spectrum. Plenty of sexy interludes but not at the expense of having an actual plot. There's a nice balance.
If I had to quibble with anything, I'd say it's a bit insta-love. I'm fine with insta-lust, but most of the romances I've read and enjoyed so far have been enemies-to-lovers or fake dating, which take longer for characters to move from attraction to love. Also, I don't think social media would ever be as overwhelmingly positive as it appears at one point in the book. A scene with Nikos's agent, Selina, fiercely dealing with online trolls could have added just a touch of realistic grit before the happy ending and given her another chance to shine as a protective and supportive friend, something I love to see...the characters' relationships beyond THE relationship. Nikos has his agent/friend Selina; Oli has coworker/friend Megan.
I definitely enjoyed this book enough that I will check out both authors' other books and am grateful I got a chance to read this before publication.

By the end, I was fully invested, rooting for their HEA. The ending at the TV studio was a tear-jerker, nearly bringing a couple of tears to my eyes with its emotional payoff.
That said, my copy had noticeable spelling, punctuation errors, and missing words, which pulled me out occasionally. The side plot driving the latter half—Nikos’s blackmail ordeal—felt a tad contrived; it seemed like something his high-powered lawyers could resolve swiftly. And Oli not recognizing a superstar like Nikos initially required some suspension of disbelief. Still, these minor gripes didn’t overshadow the book’s charm.
Overall, it’s a hot, engaging romance perfect for fans of forbidden love and redemption arcs. Highly recommend for a steamy escape!
