I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I want to start with what works here, because there is potential. Keirsh is a fun character — she’s nosy, curious, and her snooping gives the story personality and a reason to keep reading. The relationships between the characters have a warmth to them that’s genuinely sweet, and the magic system is solid enough to build something interesting on.
But I struggled to connect emotionally. The writing feels flat in places where I wanted to feel something — excitement, tension, wonder, fear. Those moments were being set up, I could see the intention, but the prose didn’t give them the weight to land. The five senses are largely missing, and without them, scenes read like events being reported rather than experiences being lived. I wanted to be inside this world, not watching it through a window.
The world-building sits in a similar space. The bones are there, but they’re vague. I kept waiting for the details that would make this world feel textured and real — the sounds, the smells, the small strange things that make a fantasy setting stick in your memory. It has potential, but it needs fleshing out.
I also want to mention the genre. This is labeled Young Adult, but it reads closer to Middle Grade — Keirsh’s age, the sentence structure, the emotional complexity all point in that direction. That’s not a criticism, just an observation. Leaning into Middle Grade could actually help this book find the readers who would love it most.
What would have earned 5 stars from me? More emotional depth in the writing — let me feel what Keirsh feels. Richer sensory detail that pulls me into the world rather than telling me it exists. And more weight behind the exciting moments so they hit instead of skim. The story, characters, and magic are a strong foundation. It’s the execution that needs to catch up to the potential.
I’m landing at 3 stars because I think this series could grow into something. The ingredients are there. I’d be interested to see how the second book develops, especially if the prose deepens alongside the story.
The Spellcaster is an enchanting and emotionally grounded fantasy that blends magic, friendship, and self-discovery. Danielle Kinderknecht creates a vivid world in Fireridge, where mystery and danger lurk beneath everyday life. Keirsh’s journey from outsider to emerging spellcaster is both empowering and relatable, strengthened by a heartfelt bond with her friend Alex. With strong characters, growing tension, and a sense of wonder throughout, this is a compelling start to a magical series that invites readers to keep turning the pages.
THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING!! The Spellcaster is an amazing blend of Fourth Wing, Throne of Glass, and Harry Potter, that any fan will love! The main character, Keirsh, is sweet, relatable, and a great heroine for young girls! It was so cool getting to finally read the book I've been hearing about for so long. I am lucky enough to know Danielle and Emma and have gotten to hear updates about The Spellcaster throughout the writing and editing process, which was so cool! I can't wait to get my hands on the physical copy! Thank you, Danielle, for the ARC copy!
