So sit back and enjoy it." -- Lee Trevino "Every golfer should come to the first tee with fourteen clubs, a dozen balls, a handful of tees, and at least one great golf story. In honor of the tradition unlike any other @themasters , even the bookstagram this week honored what has been dubbed “the greatest game ever played.” This weekend also marks my five year anniversary of watching golf at all (kudos to @kody.with.a.k for forcing me to watch The Masters in 2017 as a “rite of passage” in the depths of wedding planning). If you know me well, you know I love sports more than the typical human… golf just took a little longer for me to enjoy. 😉
This alphabetically-ordered book walks through “locker room stories” of some of golf’s greatest players, and provides an inside scoop into players, caddies, courses, the media, and of course, President Eisenhower himself. It also gave me a deeper appreciation for some of the sport’s greatest players, focusing on the prior generation of golf. Lots of chuckles, and a few heartbreaking stories. (I really want to read his newer books on this generation of golfers!)
“Golf is the most human game of them all. You have tremendous highs and the worst lows — sometimes in the same round. The game isn’t fair, but then life isn’t always fair either. You get your share of bad bounces and good luck in both. Maybe that’s why golf fans can relate so well to the pros. They can’t hit the ball as far or putt as well, but they’ve been through the same good times and bad times on the course.”
My dad had all these books (it is a series of 7 books). He gave them to me a few years before he died. THe stories are entertaining, but the first one (this one) has the best stories.
This was a really fun book to read. I love to read insider type stories about athletes and sports. I can't help but wonder what a newer version would be like as the game has become more diversified. I started watching and playing golf because of Tiger Woods, this book was well before his time. Thanks Jake for throwing this in!
this is a great book of golf stories containing anecdotes from and about all the legendary players and golf courses up to about 1991, can't wait to read the second book 'and then arnie said to chi chi'
If you love golf and good stories, then you have to read this book. Fascinating look at golf's glory days from the insiders who are the stars of that day and age.
