New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author, Susan Stoker has a heart as big as the state of Tennessee where she lives, but this all American girl has also spent the last fourteen years living in Missouri, California, Colorado, Indiana, and Tennessee. She's married to a retired Army man who now gets to follow her around the country.
I especially love the women in Ms. Stoker's Rescue Angels (Nightstalker helicopter pilots) series. The men aren't slouches, either, but the female protagonists are especially strong and supportive of each other in this series. Kara Guthrie was no exception. And little Bowie. ❤
A good story told in a clear, straightforward manner. We are nearing the end of this series and Stoker focused on wrapping things up and preparing for the last book. Great bad guy!
Heroes Fly. Heroines Rise. Susan Stoker Does the Rest.
"She was no damsel in distress. No, she was a heroine in peril. And her luck would hold out." — Keeping Kara, p. 282; Susan Stoker; July 7, 2026.
Keeping Kara, book five in Susan Stoker's Rescue Angels series, is another shining example of Stoker's gift for creating characters readers can't help but fall in love with. Her heroes and heroines are members of the Army's elite Night Stalkers helicopter unit—and the women strong enough to love them.
The Night Stalkers are probably the last Special Operations unit I'd expect to call if I needed a white knight. Night Stalkers FLY—Not Fight! But in Susan Stoker's world, a hero isn't defined by his job description. He's the man who puts someone else's life before his own, who walks through fire without hesitation...or throws himself out of a helicopter into raging floodwaters during a hurricane to rescue a complete stranger clinging to a tree.
Enter Kara Guthrie and her white knight, Arrow "Chaos" Porter.
Even after his team is ordered back to base as the storm worsens, Chaos refuses to leave Kara behind. Letting her drown simply isn't an option. That breathtaking opening rescue sets the pace for the entire novel. From that moment on, my heart was forever Team Chaos!
Kara, meanwhile, is the very definition of a Susan Stoker heroine.
Stoker has a remarkable talent for creating women who may be bent, but are never broken. Too tall, too short, too thin, or too curvy—it doesn't matter. She reminds both her characters and her readers that beauty isn't about perfection. It's about courage, resilience, and refusing to give up.
Before long, even the most cynical among us begins to believe that every woman can become the heroine of her own story.
Kara herself says it best when she realizes she isn't a damsel in distress. She's a heroine in peril...and she's determined to survive.
She begins the story as an introvert caught in the crosshairs of a crazed serial killer. Convinced she is cursed with bad luck, she spends her life waiting for the other shoe to drop. By the final chapter, she has become a confident woman who finally believes in herself...and an indie thriller author to boot.
But Chaos isn't the only catalyst for Kara's transformation.
The true turning point is the sisterhood she finds among the women of the Night Stalkers. They welcome Kara from the moment Chaos introduces her, surrounding her with friendship, understanding, and unwavering support. Their shared trauma binds them together, but it is watching these women not only survive—but truly thrive—that gives Kara the courage to change her own life.
Bent but not broken.
That message of hope runs through every Susan Stoker novel I've read. No matter what her characters endure, they refuse to let tragedy define them. They survive. They heal. And eventually, they thrive.
Heroes rescue people every day. Great authors remind us that sometimes the hardest rescue is learning to believe in ourselves. That's exactly what Susan Stoker delivers in Keeping Kara.
This was another phenomenal story in the Rescue Angels’ series. I loved, loved Arrow and Kara’s romance. This heartwarming and suspenseful storyline with real, relatable characters had the perfect balance of humor, love, real life issues, danger, big feels, and spice. Kara is an accountant and an Indie published author. She had the bad luck to date a psycho who abducted her when she broke up with him. Then a hurricane and flash flood swept her “prison” away leaving her clinging to a tree for safety. Arrow/Chaos is a Night Stalker pilot who, along with his teammates, is sent to rescue flood victims. He sees Kara in the tree and his world tilts so of course he jumps in the water after her. They survive the flood together and think her kidnapping abuser is dead so Kara agrees to move to Norfolk. Unfortunately, because this book is set in the Stoker universe, all is not rainbows and unicorns because the bad guy is still out there. Despite knowing the bad thing is definitely coming, it does not detract from the suspenseful buildup and how captivating the story was including the wondering how the bad thing was going to happen. Expect to feel all the things while reading this love story - fear, love, anger, tears, joy, and so much all encompassing, nurturing, protective love. While most of us will never be in the dangerous situations the main characters are a part of, the author nevertheless makes who they are as people so relatable and real that it is easy to fall in love with them. I cannot wait to read Edge and Jen’s book next. 4.5 stars.
Arrow has earned the name Chaos many times over, but leaping out of the helo to get to Kara may just be his craziest move yet. Kara's story has so many elements, many of which are juxtaposed, horrifically bad luck and evil people, but then touches of good luck and amazingly good people that are so unlikely the odds are incalculable....the biggest of these? Chaos launching himself out of the helo after her! The Rescue Angels already own my heart, but as we see each of them find their soul mate, I find myself falling for their women too. Kara is far stronger than she thinks she is, which she proves as she helps rescue herself and Chaos when the flash flood almost claims them. I love seeing her fight return and when she finds herself in danger again, she uses their love to keep her strong because she knows....Arrow will always come for her, always find her. Edge and Jen's book is next and I am torn, I cannot wait to see Edge help Jen find her strength once more. But I am terrified to imagine the horrors they will face before getting their HEA. I listened to this on Audible
Arrow (aka Chaos) has a sixth sense & has learned to trust it. Good thing, too, bc as soon as he locks eyes on Kara, he knows she's important. From the raging river created by a hurricane to the woods surrounding it, these two rescue each other while waiting for a full rescue by our Night Stalkers. And that's just the beginning!! 😁
I love the way Arrow becomes Kara's safe space. He's half in love with her from the jump (haha, pun intended) but knows she's gonna need time bc of the trauma she just escaped. He's there for her in whatever capacity she needs. And Kara! Love her strength & heart! She folds into the group pretty seamlessly & quickly forms bonds with everyone. Especially Jen. Their friendship is especially ❤️.
As Arrow & Kara's friendship grows into more, her abusive stalker is busy being a major pain - even if they don't know how close he might be. We get humor & steam & suspense & love in this story AND a great final chapter with a different kind of tease for Jen & Edge (aka Roman). 😉
Love Chaos and Kara. What a great story. I loved how he does whatever he can to make her feel safe
Kara has been abused and assaulted and held captive by her ex. When a hurricane floods the area and she is able to escape only to cling to a tree hoping to survive the flooding, she has no idea if she will live. Chaos and his team are sent to look for survivors in the middle of a hurricane, Chaos jumps into the raging waters when he sees her and then the tree is uprooted and she is then in the water. When he finds her and tells him her story while the are waiting to be rescued by his teammates, he is pissed for what she had been through. Now the don't k ow what happened to her ex, but everyone thinks he died in his car in a fire not far from where she was held. DNA is inconclusive but they won't believe it until it is proven to be him. When he kidnaps her again, will Chaos be able to find her in time?
Keeping Kara is So Much Fun! It’s another heartwarming, standalone, happily ever after, romantic suspense tale by Susan Stoker.
The book begins with Chaos and his team on a rescue mission. Chaos spots a stranded woman, Kara, clinging to a tree in the middle of a raging river. What’s he going to do? Maybe jump out of his helicopter? Kara and Chaos’ journey is pretty wild.
Keeping Kara is super fun, full of smart, independent, kind, caring, cooperative characters (not TSTL), instalove, and instafamilies of friends and pets, partner-relationships, it’s full of heat, heart and staying alive while solving a suspenseful conflict.
Keeping Kara, has all the above, and more, and I loved every second of Kara and Arrow/Chaos’ happily ever after tale.
Kara and Arrow are an amazing couple! Wow, this story really blew me away. First, when you learn about everything that Kara went through at the hands of her ex, she just amazed me. That woman might think she has bad luck, but to see her still fighting shows you her true spirit. Then when Arrow finds her clinging to that tree and he has a moment where he knows she going to be special to him, gave me goosebumps. I cannot believe that he jumped out of a helicopter to save Kara. That’s a true hero right there. This story had so many emotional ups and downs that I didn’t want to put it down. I loved watching Arrow help Kara over come her PTSD and anxiety and just be her safe space. These two were really meant for each other. Another Great Story!!
This is book 5 in the Rescue Angels series and it features Arrow “Chaos” Porter and Kara Guthrie. He’s always had a sixth sense about things. When he sees a woman holding onto a tree, in the middle of a hurrricane, he knows she’s going to mean something to his future. When he sees said tree fall over into the raging flood waters, all he knows is that he HAS to save her and jumps out of the helicopter.
This story is full of Chaos’ woo woo instincts, which turns out to be correct a majority of the time. I love that despite all that Kara has been through, she’s still a strong person. This is a fantastic story full of family, love, tragedy and learning to live and trust again. I can’t wait for Edge and Jen’s book!
As ever a wonderful story with lots going on to keep the reader interested. Great to catch up with previous characters and allow others to develop. This is Arrow’s chance, alias Chaos. Whilst on a mission he literally takes a leap of faith to rescue Kara whilst stuck up a tree whilst in the middle of a raging flood. Lots of action and some totally revolting characters called Nolan Collins, who is not the nice guy he seems. Arrow after rescuing Kara becomes very attached and a very chemicallly charged interest starts. Unfortunately fate has another idea. There is a fabulous HEA, and lead into the next and last in this series, Edge and Jennifer, who has already had a very bad experience. A great novel.
Wow, that was intense!!! Kara has been through a horrifying experience, and it takes her a while to learn how to process it all. That will come in very handy in the next book in the series, as you will soon see. Also, I did have to jump ahead, because while I knew the authour would never hurt Fred, I had to find out what happened to him, which wasn’t that bad. If you don’t know who Fred is, you will learn, and you will want him safe, trust me. Our couple though, they build trust, they build feelings, they build love, and it is what carries them when all seems lost, and gets them to their HEA <3
I always enjoy a Susan stoker story and this one was no exception. I’ve loved all the Rescue Angels books and this one is my new favorite. Kara had been thru hell being held captive. She meets “Chaos” when his rescue helicopter finds her hanging onto a tree during a hurricane rescue operation. He dives in to save her. They then save each other. But the evildoer isn’t finished.
Loved this story. All of the Night Stalker pilots and their women are back with previous plots continuing here. There’s suspense. Romance. Rescues. Everything. This can be read as a standalone but I recommend every book in this series, in order, to get the most enjoyment out of this story.
She went through hell and that God he found and saved her in that flooding. There's sumthing seriously wrong with that asshole that thinks he has any rights 2 any women and they r just supposed 2 fall at his feet. He's dreaming!! He is a narcissist and thinks he has any rights 2 beat on women like he did on Kara. Arrow will always follow his gut that helps with everything on missions and every day things 2. When that asshole uses her friend Jennifer 2 get 2 her this 2nd x what will happen? Hopefully with my favorite man's help (Tex) they will find her b4 anything goes 2 far. I really enjoyed it, loved it.
Downloaded the audiobook as soon as it was released. I always appreciate Susan's narrators- I don't know how that works but everyone who narrates her books always has a great voice that I like listening too. I know that is quite an expense for authors, but I would say it's well worth it. As usual, I really enjoyed this latest title from Susan. I especially enjoyed the character development of Kara and her overcoming fear and obstacles and her relationship with the entire Rescue Angels crew. Looking forward to Jen's story next.
Wow… Kara & Arrow… LOVE THEM! Susan did it again with another great couple, story, and keeping the themes. The suspense was perfect, the romance was great, just the right amount of adult fun, and the segway for Jen’s story was beautifully executed. I’ve already pre-ordered it and can’t wait!
10/10 recommend reading either as a standalone or park of the series; but if read as a series, the characters mentions not only make more sense but also allow you as the reader to connect more.
Hooked from the first sentence — truly. Keeping Kara is Book 5 in the Rescue Angel Series, and it delivers everything I love about Susan Stoker’s writing. The MMC’s love‑at‑first‑sight moment is swoony, immediate, and exactly the kind of protective devotion that makes this series so addictive.
Kara is strong, smart, and easy to cheer for, and the plot keeps the tension high without ever losing the emotional core. By the time I finished, I was already itching for Edge and Jen’s story — their setup in this book has me counting the days.
I loved this story of Kara and Arrow!! Arrow rescued Kara from a flood in a hurricane. From the moment he saw her, he sensed she was the one. He finds out what she's been through and offers to bring her to Norfolk to stay. Kara ends up moving into Arrow's house. As time goes on, they get closer and closer. But danger is lurking around the corner. Her captor comes back to finish the job. Arrow and the team stop him and save Kara. I love this book and series. I highly recommend!! I can't wait for Jen and Roman's story!
This book hurt my heart with how much trauma that both Kara and Jen have suffered. You gotta love a strong willed and stubborn man. I love Arrow's stories about his mom and his openness about his 6th sense. I am really happy that there is a happy ending. I don't think I could have handled something more sinister. I love that both Kara and Arrow have the support of their friends. Can't wait for the next installment of Rescue Angels.
I devoured Arrow and Kara’s story and loved seeing these two together. I enjoyed the friendships between all the women and how supportive they were of one another. Susan Stoker does a great job balancing romance, action and suspense and I love knowing what I will get when reading her books. I’m loving the Rescue Angels series and cannot wait for Edge and Jen’s story next.
This is an absolute thriller of a story, nonstop action from beginning to end. The baddy is truly evil and very clever but the good guys are fabulous and, naturally, involve Tex again! The final book is beautifully set up and hopefully we’ll meet the twins, Bowie was her amazing self and loved having the dogs involved. Highly recommend this book.
There is only 1 problem with a book by Susan Stoker-when I receive a new book I can put it down! I spend a my free time reading until I finish the book. This book was very interesting and I loved the slow love story that it contained. When you finish one of her books you feel as if you are saying goodbye to friends until the next time you see them.
This is a very intense story of Kara and all that she had gone through before rescue from raging flood waters had how her life changes after meeting Chaos and the whole team. Can she spot another issue when its right in front of her?
If you are a top gun fan this series is for you. Susan writes a heroine in peril not a damsel in distress. Hot pilots check. Flooding check. Kidnapping check check. Susan is a great storyteller and I am never disappointed. So snuggle in with your fav beverage and fav seat because its time for another bestseller
From their death-defying first meeting, Chaos and Kara have had a special connection. The care he takes with her and of her is beautiful. I knew these men were special and Chaos definitely proves it yet again. I love these men and these women. Yet again, they have beat the evil that lives in this world. Loved their story so much! And now I’m anxiously awaiting Edge and Jen’s story!
The first sighting Chaos (Arrow) has of Kara is her out on a limb. Jumping into the water to try and rescue her starts their getting to know each other. I enjoyed this story immensely. Getting to see their story unfold and seeing the whole gang as the solidify their relationships. Great story!!
A brilliantly written suspense love story that will keep you on your toes through out this book!! This book has high drama and suspense from start to finish!! Kara and Arrow (Chaos) are the perfect couple! Revisit with the rest of the team and get ready because this book sets you up for a fabulous finale with Jen and Roman (Edge). Loved this book and can't wait for the next book to come out!!
I love that Susan Stoker creates strong, resilent women who are great matches for the equally strong men they fall in love wth. Kara and Chaos are two such people. They meet in a highly unusual and unique way but the very moment he first looked ino her eyes, he knew. The rest of his Nightstalker team and their women play equally important roles as this love story unfolds. Great read!
Kara had been kidnapped by an x boyfriend. He beat and rapped her and tied her up. There was a flood and she managed to escape the house and got in a tree. Chaos was flying a helicopter with his teammates when he spotted Kara. Chaos ended up jumping in the water to save her. I loved this story.
These are so boring...I just skim for the most part. I keep waiting for one of Stoker's new books to be as good as her older stuff, but it's just not happening. There is zero tension or angst or mystery - she tells you who the bad guy is from the get-go! And the couples are pretty much insta-love a few chapters in.
