This is a Harlequin Historical Romance published in 2002. This is a regency period romance and is written by Nicola Cornick. This is the sequel to "Lady Allerton's Wager ". If you missed the first novel it won't effect your enjoyment of this one. It can be read as a stand alone.
Eleanor eloped with Kit to avoid an arranged marriage her mother was adamant to see happen. Kit and Eleanor have feelings for each other, but their families are locked in a feud. Only days after the marriage, Kit abandons his new bride. Five months later he returns to find his wife in a compromising situation.
They immediately began to hurl accusations at each other. They eventually agree to a marriage of convenience. Gradually the story begins to unfold about Kit's sudden disappearance and sudden return. Eleanor and Kit become friends again, but Kit is determined to win Eleanor back and have a real marriage. Even though they make great progress, Eleanor is still holding back a secret that she can't come to terms with. Until she can make peace with herself and overcome her fears, she may never find happiness.
I haven't read a Harlequin historical yet that I didn't like. I always try to put myself in the position of the character and so I could see and feel Eleanor's pain and distrust of Kit. Kit learns of his wife's hardship during his absense and has to be the one to work at making the marriage valid. I didn't understand why Eleanor didn't confess her fears when she learned the truth about Kit's reasons for being gone so long. That was a little puzzling to me.
All the secondary characters were probably familiar if you read the first book, which I haven't. But, I did enjoy their contribution to the story. A nice easy entertaining read. Overall this one gets a B.

In this story, the hero is too perfect and the heroine is too flawed (as well as an immature coward - I didn't like her).

The heroines' major problem was her fear of having another miscarriage, but the fact that she'd had one was brought up far too late in the story for me to sympahtize with her behavior towards the hero.

Mostly, I felt as if the book was drawn out to make word count and would have faired better as a novella or a short story.

This is one of Nicola Cornick's earlier books. It was a typical story with a few twists to make it interesting. I wasn’t very engaged with the hero or heroine. The other characters seemed more interesting. The story of Kit and Eleanor Mostyn was just okay.

The lack of communication between the hero and heroine does not bode well for a happy future. This story has a ridiculous beginning, but wasn't a bad read.
