A haunting past. A deadly obsession. A race to unmask a killer before he strikes again.
England, 14th century. The brutal double murder of Lady Vivienne Harlowe’s parents has haunted her for seven years. When a new series of killings terrorizes Mablethorpe—each body marked by a white goose feather and a gold florin—Vivienne fears the murderer who destroyed her family has returned.
When Sheriff Zachariah Fitch’s sister, Cassandra, and her friend, Fanny, arrive from the brothels of Southwark, Zachariah’s anger turns to horror when Fanny’s dead body is found in a horse trough—wearing Lady Vivienne’s cloak. A killer has struck Mablethorpe yet again, and this time, Vivienne may have been the intended victim.
As panic spreads and suspicion poisons even the closest bonds, Vivienne and Zachariah must navigate a labyrinth of secrets, vengeance, and betrayal. But as the truth begins to surface, one horrifying realization becomes clear—the monster they hunt may be closer than they ever imagined.
Justice has waited seven years. Now, the hunter becomes the hunted.

I have enjoyed the 14th Century Harlowe and Fitch series thus far but this last novel just didn’t quite match the previous titles. Sure there’s plenty of action and mystery. I was totally fascinated by the Winchester Goose origins and meanings. In this novel, last in the series, Lady Vivienne Harlowe and Sheriff Zachariah Fitch’s world is interrupted by murder and dark doings. Fitch’s sister Cassandra, who’d chosen legal prostitution as a living, being a “goose”, had always rankled Zachariah. Now she’s turned up in Maplethorpe, accompanied by her friend Fanny. Cassandra is looking for Zachariah’s forgiveness. When Fanny is found dead in a horse’s trough wearing Vivienne’s cloak, Zachariah fears the worst. He is fearful, distressed and angry. Murders afoot and it doesn’t stop here. I was driven crazy by Zachariah’s brother Issac’s constant inability to try to do his job. His laziness threw me. Hopefully he grows up. This is a tale of murder, vengeance and long held tensions. The person I’d suspected all along of being behind the assassination of Lady Vivienne’s parents bore fruit in an unexpected manner.
An Oliver Herber ARC via Booksprout Many thanks to the author and publisher.
“Murder of a Winchester Goose” by Elizabeth Rose serves as an excellent conclusion to this captivating series. The investigative duo of Harlowe and Fitch emerges as formidable characters, their escapades compelling readers to turn the pages in anticipation of their discoveries or potential conflicts. The diverse and intriguing cast of characters enriches the narrative, adding depth and vibrancy. The meticulously crafted plot unfolds at a steady pace, ensuring a satisfying resolution for those who have followed the series. This conclusion satisfactorily addresses numerous lingering questions, leaving readers with a sense of fulfillment and closure.
Murder of a Winchester Goose is the latest entry in the Harlowe & Fitch Historical Mystery series, and it’s a brilliant addition to the saga. Each installment has steadily drawn us closer to the truth behind the long-unsolved murder of Lady Vivienne Harlowe’s parents, a crime that has haunted her for seven years.
Set against the backdrop of 14th-century England, this story follows Lady Vivienne Harlowe and Sheriff Zachariah Fitch as they confront a terrifying new series of murders in Mablethorpe. Each victim is marked with the killer’s chilling signature: a white goose feather and a gold florin. For Vivienne, these murders awaken the nightmare of her parents brutal deaths, and she fears the killer may have returned.
When Zachariah’s estranged sister, Cassandra, arrives from the Southwark brothels with her friend Fanny, tragedy soon follows. Fanny is discovered dead in a horse trough, draped in Lady Vivienne’s cloak, raising the terrifying possibility that Vivienne herself was the intended target.
As Vivienne and Zachariah delve into the investigation, they encounter buried secrets, hidden motives, and growing instability within Vivienne’s family—particularly her increasingly unhinged uncle. The closer they come to the truth, the more horrifying the revelations, as the killer may be far closer than they ever imagined.
I absolutely loved this installment of the Harlowe & Fitch Historical Mystery series. Vivienne’s personal journey—reuniting with her long-lost brother and son—and her deepening bond with Zachariah have been highlights of the series. Her determination, willingness to sneak about when necessary, and her efforts to mend strained relationships make her an incredibly endearing heroine.
The shocking twist revealing the perpetrator behind her parents murder was brilliantly executed. Zachariah’s fear of losing Vivienne, culminating in his heartfelt declaration, provided a deeply satisfying emotional payoff. This book is a thrilling, unforgettable addition to the series. Elizabeth Rose delivers once again, and I can only hope the adventures of Harlowe & Fitch will continue!

If you have not read any of the previous books in this series, it will make the stories so much better if you read them in order. Each book has clues to the mystery that runs through all the books. Ah, this book is the one I’ve been waiting for where we get a lot of our questions answered. It was not what I thought it would be, but much better. Sheriff Zachariah has a very interesting family tree. His brother, Isaac, used to be a mercenary but has changed his life and is now working with Zachariah as a deputy in training. His older sister, Magdalena is a nun. Now we meet his younger sister who is a legalized prostitute or Goose! Her best friend has been murdered on rotten row the worst slums. Zachariah is furious thinking his friend Lady Vivien would be stupid to stay in that part of town. Her Uncle and Aunt are Lord, and Lady Mablethorpe rulers of this area. She lives in a Castle! She has been helping him investigate murder cases. Now she may be the one in danger. With a wonderful cast of characters, these books are a great read of mystery, danger, suspense, and a touch of romance too. Vivien and Zachariah have known each other since childhood. Both have lost their mates and are raising children alone. Her dog, Grunt finds dead bodies, add a rat catching cat, Midnight along with a couple of mischievous ferrets, and it is a wild read. Grab a copy or get started on the series. All the books are great. It ending was a great surprise too. I received and ARC from the author and would like to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

A Twisted Tale of Greed and Betrayal When a murdered woman is found wearing Lady Vivienne’s cloak, the question isn’t just who killed her — but who the real target was meant to be. Was it a tragic coincidence, or was Vivienne the one meant to die? Vivienne and Zachariah are pulled into another investigation, but this one feels especially personal. With the past resurfacing and a possible connection to the murder of Vivienne’s parents, the danger feels closer than before. Zachariah worries about how often Vivienne places herself at risk, and this time his concern makes sense. This installment finally answers the long-standing question surrounding Vivienne’s family, and the truth is tied to greed, betrayal, and buried motives. I changed my mind more than once about where things were heading, which always makes a mystery more fun for me. I’ve enjoyed the way Vivienne and Zachariah’s relationship develops across the series. The romance never takes over the story, but it’s always there in the background. Noblewoman and commoner — should that matter as much as everyone thinks it does? This is one you really should read in order, or you’ll miss a lot of the bigger threads. If you like historical mystery with suspense, a touch of humor, and a light romantic thread, this series is worth the ride.
We have a grand Finale about the mystery of Lady Vivienne Harlowe murder of her parents and finally a little romance between Vivienne and Sheriff Zachariah Fitch! We have a murder victim of a Winchester Goose Aka Lady of the evening! She was wearing Lady Vivienne clock and pushed out if a window with another injury! This injury happens again later to another victim so you have to read the book! Well of course there are additional murders because there is a madman on the loose! Vivienne wants Zachariah to reconcile with his sister Cassandra and forgive her for the foolish live choices made to become a lady of the evening. Of course he resists but when the body count steadily rises well he definitely gives it thought! When the clues add up much too close to homes Vivienne suspects her uncle and aunt! The truth is even more horrifying! Well there is laughter and a lot of emotions running high as Vivienne still has nightmares! Zachariah has no choice but to face his feelings as each step closer to the villain also brings more attempts on Vivienne’s life! This next one hits way too close to home! Bravo so very well done! I received an ARC copy for my unbiased review on Booksprout!
When his sister Cassandra and her friend, both Winchester Geese, unexpectedly arrived in town, Zachariah never thought it would lead to the next murder investigation for Harlowe and Fitch. The day after Zachariah refused to let them stay at his home, Fanny is found dead in the horse trough outside a Rotten Row Inn, wearing Vivienne’s cloak. Could it be that someone is after Lady Viviene? Could this murder be connected to the attack and murder of her parents seven years ago? This is a well-crafted tale with a complex plot that keeps you turning pages and guessing at the guilty party. There is murder, mystery, suspense, tension, family upset (to put it mildly), humor, and a possibility of romance(s). All our favorite characters are here along with some new ones. An excellent story that brings a conclusion to the running mystery that I certainly didn’t see coming, and surprises and happy endings for Zachariah and Vivienne and a large group of friends and family. I am looking forward to more Harlowe and Fitch in the future. I received an ARC of this book via BookSprout and voluntarily reviewed it.
This is a 3-3.5/5 stars for me. For someone who rails against any and all authority being pushed upon her Lady Vivienne is incredibly self righteous and likes to impose her will on others whenever she can. I mean the sheriff not wanting two Winchester geese in his home with a young daughter makes sense for many reasons but nooo that’s not good enough for Vivienne because one happens to be his sister he must make up with her and accept her no matter what his feelings are or what the consequences may be. It’s grating. Also the whole thing with her uncle came out of left field. In fact in came from behind left field. Like what was that? I have read all the books and idk where that was coming from. I like this series but I really had a hard time with this particular book. Not my fav, your mileage may vary.
This is the last in the series. I have not read the books before. It is easy enough to read as a standalone. I read almost exclusively murder mysteries, and I found this one a little lacking in adventure. I think for those who have read the series, it makes an excellent conclusion. I did enjoy the read, though and was anxious to get to the conclusion to see the results, and then it was quite a surprise. It was also the end of a romance that had been going through all the books. If you read this book before the others in the series, you will spoil the mystery. It is best to read the series from book one. Although most of the past books by Ms Rose I have read have a few sex scenes in them, this one did not. I received it as an ARC from Booksprout and freely give my review.
An Ongoing Mystery Comes to an End This mystery series has been quite intriguing. The characters are interesting with a hint of underlying romance that doesn't go anywhere but together they accomplish their challenge and solve the mystery which brought this series to a surprising conclusion. This last book brings the unknown answers to the many questions left for the end. I usually do not read mystery stories, but Ms. Rose writing skills are wonderful. I am glad to have read the entire series. This review is my honest opinion.
This was an intriguing mystery, but I found it very strange about the person being held captive for 7 years in a cave and not having more health problems. I have always felt that the FMC should have a little more common sense than what she has displayed in this series. I do like the MMC and of course the children are sweet. There are several villains to unravel their connections to the murder.

This book is so awesome, Zachariah endures so much from his family, but it’s all worth it in the end. I loved how he and Vivienne work together gathering evidence and trusting each other. This book is unpredictable and you won’t be able to put it down with all the wonderful characters. I know this is the last of the series but I’m going back to read the others.

This is another entertaining read in this series. While there is a murder mystery to solve, there is another ongoing mystery. Lady Vivienne and Sheriff Zachariah Flint are the main characters. They have known each other since childhood. Vivienne is no ordinary lady, she has a caring heart but also loves to help Zach solving mysteries. She doesn’t take kindly to anyone telling her what to do. In this latest mystery, various events makes her wonder who she can trust. There are a number of surprises, danger and a little romance. Zach and Vivienne have feelings for each other but other factors stop them from declaring their true feelings. I was very surprised at the conclusion. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a historical murder mystery of a whore who comes to a town where she's not wanted. Along with her is her friend who is from the town. The town sheriff is her brother but he doesn't claim her because of her profession.

This was so good. It was hard to put down. I love how everything came together. It really kept me thinking of who the killer was. It was such a surprise. Through the sadness and hardships Vivienne and Zechariah remain steadfast friends but it is getting harder and harder to stay in the friend zone. The conclusion was very satisfying.

A murderer strikes again this time they strike at the wrong person instead of the victim being Lady Vivienne the victim is the sister of sheriff Zachariah Fitch. Working together can Zachariah and Vivienne find the killer terrorising Mablethorpe before they strike again.
Harlowe and Fitch are back in this exciting mystery! This is a super series that will take you on adventure after adventure keeping you guessing until the end.

I wasn't expecting this ending, but it made a lot of sense. Vivienne is a lot more scattered here, with a lot happening at the castle, and murders piling up. Zachariah is trying to do his job, but with his family all coming back home and Vivienne in danger, it's not easy.
