Yoon Ha Lee is an American science fiction writer born on January 26, 1979 in Houston, Texas. His first published story, “The Hundredth Question,” appeared in Fantasy & Science Fiction in 1999; since then, over two dozen further stories have appeared. He lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The story: When Doctor Doom becomes Earth's new sorcerer supreme and somehow manages to convince all the world's leaders to make him our planet's ruler, Tiger Division, South Korea's superhuman response team, gets roped into being a part of a pan-Asian initiative called Doom's Division. People are doubtful, and reactions are mixed with some wanting to give Doom the benefit of the doubt, others less so. Luna Snow is assigned to make propaganda songs for the new world order, and Sunfire starts a violent resistance movement, which the newly formed Doom's Division is assigned to put a stop to.
Should you read this?: If you're reading the main One World story and wondering "Is it worth it to read a side story from another part of the world? Side stories on events like this tend to get a bad rap, so is it even going to be any good?" I'd say it's an unqualified yes from me to both those questions. In fact, I'd say almost all the side stories for One World have been remarkably high quality compared to a lot of other Marvel events. The author of this, Yoon Ha Lee, is a pretty well-known and highly regarded sci-fi novelist, and it really shows (very awesome Marvel managed to snag him to write this imo). The story, while it does start out maybe just a little slow, it really picks up and had me fully hooked by the end of the first issue. The story's got a lot of twists and turns, and does such a good job developing these characters.
The art: Pretty darn good really. It won't knock your socks off maybe, but it's very solid above average quality, I'd say.
3.5 Good art, and I like how it started. Some really interesting characters I'm less familiar with, too. There was potential, but the story started to grow stale and the end was a little to Hallmark movie ending. And the connection up One World Under Doom was disappointing (I wanted this series to matter more the the overarching story).
I really want to give the pan asian characters a chance but they lack any personality and this story adds nothing to the ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM story and it isn't a story on it's own. I wish someone saw more potential here.
