Red-hot writer Saladin Ahmed continues to shake up Daredevil's status quo in Hell’s Kitchen and beyond!
Hell’s Kitchen is rotting! Still reeling after his recent harrowing nightmares, Matt Murdock has managed to find some comfort in the arms of a long-lost love! Meanwhile, a dangerous new enemy threatens to attack Hell's Kitchen…FROM THE INSIDE OUT! Matt may be surrounded by familiar faces, friends and foes, but something’s wrong. He can smell it! Nothing can escape the Man Without Fear — and even amid all the chaos and commotion of the city, something is festering inside Hell’s Kitchen and eating its inhabitants alive, including Daredevil!
Saladin Ahmed was born in Detroit and raised in a working-class, Arab American enclave in Dearborn, MI.
His short stories have been nominated for the Nebula and Campbell awards, and have appeared in Year's Best Fantasy and numerous other magazines, anthologies, and podcasts, as well as being translated into five foreign languages. He is represented by Jennifer Jackson of the Donald Maass Literary Agency. THRONE OF THE CRESCENT MOON is his first novel.
Saladin lives near Detroit with his wife and twin children.
Ahmed's run up to this conclusion will not be remembered, but the initial idea was quite good, despite a somewhat clumsy execution.
But then... The editor probably decided to cut his losses and asked him to wrap it up quickly. Which he does here in two subplots, both equally bad for different reasons. The first one wants to be "The Last of Us" but is just the pathetic downfall of the D-list "Cordyceps Man" whom you've never heard of and won't hear of again. He also reintroduces Nyla Skin, an ultra-secondary character from almost 40 years ago, as a new love interest. Never heard of her? No matter, she's gone in two issues.
As for the second arc... I'd say it's a first-degree murder of the Kingpin.
I was frankly sceptical about Ahmed's talent until now. Now I know.
I kind of felt like Ahmed's Daredevil had ended after the last volume. The overarching Deadly Sins plot was over, and Matt had been left in a bad place, which was usually how DD writers leave the poor guy for the new team to pick up.
This final volume therefore feels a bit tacked on as a result, shifting focus entirely. Matt's still dealing with the trauma of the last arc, but the Deadly Sins are gone, drawing him into battle with a mushroom man, and the return of the Kingpin.
The mushroom story is fine - the reveal of who the villain actually is was unexpected, but nothing overly special, and the Kingpin story feels more like set-up for something bigger than a story unto itself.
The artwork is what really shines here. Jose Luis Soares, who draws most of the volume aside from a few fill-in pages by Carlos Nieto, does a stellar job, reminding me of old-school Mark Bagley, with lots of detail, plenty of backgrounds, and some very dynamic poses. The only thing I found a bit off-putting was the big grin he kept giving the Kingpin, but it works within the confines of the story given how nutso Fisk is acting.
A bit of a strange ending, but at least it looked pretty, and we got to see the old black & red armour for a bit too.
Feels like DD is just left holding the bag after the last volume...
The Deadly Sins have all been battled and...now what?
Well... (somebody watched 'The Last Of Us' and thought mushrooms/spores make a good villain) AND? AND?! Kingpin goes all acolyte. He's tasted Godly might and wants some of that good good.
*sigh* Same old Daredevil stories. Can't even leave the black and red armor behind.
been a daredevil fan forever and this was honestly the worst
Been a fan of daredevil since Frank Miller and this is honestly the worst volume I’ve read since before Kevin Smith was on the book (Kevin Smith being the start or a great run through bendis, brakes, diggle, soule, and zdarksy). But why did we need a Last of Us knock off in Daredevil. And bringing back the armor and the worst stories didn’t help. Very much a skip.
I've had a really open mind during this run. Like honestly the 7DS arc wasn't THAT bad, it dragged a bit but I kinda dug it. As soon as I started this trade I felt like I had missed a chunk of story in between the previous storyline and this one. And the reasoning for bringing the black armour back??? Lol, lmao even.
Ahmed ends his mid run on daredevil on a dull note with the last few issues not making up for any of the eh stuff he’s done before. Hopefully a good writer and team can pick up the story with putting it into a better direction.
Nothing important happens here.. Just the filler issues for the last volume of Saladin Ahmed's run. However, i do quite enjoyed the fight & action scenes. That is Saladin Ahmed is really good at! Action-packed stories!
LOVED this first part of this so much!! zombie apocalypse vibes and I am here for it. second half felt like it was just redoing old themes from earlier in this run, but was fun nonetheless
