The Very Best of Friends: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
A friendship begun in honesty may prove the truest love of all. When Elizabeth Bennet travels to Netherfield to care for her sister, she expects nothing more than civility from the proud Mr. Darcy. But in a few honest, unguarded moments, she discovers a man of warmth, integrity, and surprising gentleness.

What begins as mutual respect soon deepens into a genuine friendship that neither anticipated. Yet not everyone is pleased by their growing closeness, and when interference threatens to divide them, Elizabeth and Darcy must decide whether the bond they’ve built can withstand the weight of expectation—and become something far greater.

The Very Best of Friends is a heartfelt Pride and Prejudice variation celebrating trust, understanding, and the quiet strength of a love that begins with friendship.

4.5* rounded up

The title of this engaging story reflects a dichotomy in the feelings of its antagonists. Darcy begins with a perspective of passionate love, whereas Elizabeth's stance is the opposite (who can blame a girl who is deemed only tolerable). From these opposing emotions, they quickly correct their conflict and misunderstanding, and a deep friendship develops between them to fight together against enemies and obstacles.

I particularly enjoy this characterization of Jane, who is shown to be human rather than the serene and dispassionate angel of canon.

I recommend this book to those looking for a unique variation, well-written with low angst.

Once they got to be friends...

This is an enchanting story where our beloved couple develops a great friendship. The narrative about how their relationship grows is very well written and involves us readers, making us feel like we are present, watching everything from nearby. I surely recommend it!

In this variation, while staying at Netherfield Park, Elizabeth Bennet helps a maid, injured by broken porcelain.

The haughty Fitzwilliam Darcy, arranges to pay for medical assistance, when Miss Bingley refuses. Elizabeth is surprised to discover that Darcy is always kind to the servants.

With her typical impertinence, Elizabeth asks why a man who is so kind, treats the people of Meryton with such distain.

Thus begins a conversation, that leads to friendship and then to love.

We have the usual obstacles, Lady Catherine, Caroline Bingley, George Wickham and others.

I particularly enjoyed seeing both Caroline and Wickham receiving their just desserts!

The relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth is sweet, tender and grounded in both love and friendship.

Excellent book.

When Jane is ill at Netherfield Elizabeth rushes to her side to care for her. She expects no pleasure from this visit but is surprised to soon discover another side of the proud Mr Darcy. After his insult she expects nothing more than politeness but is pleasantly surprised when she discovers that he genuinely cares for the people dependent on him and that he is also a loving brother. After a frank conversation a mutual respect builds and soon a genuine friendship develops and eventually they both feel the first flatters of love. But not everyone is glad to see their better understanding and deepening regard.
Will Darcy and Elizabeth care enough for each other to fight for their love despite the expectations of others. Will they be able to withstand the outward intruders? And will they be able to protect their love despite the machinations of others?

The story was very well written by the author Melissa Anne. I always like her stories very much because Darcy and Elizabeth normally come to an early understanding and fight together against obstacles. Therefore this story is totally to my liking. Darcy and Elizabeth, with the help of a frank and honest conversation, get a better understanding of one another early in the book and therefore decide that they want to know each other better and on a deeper level. Because they talk with one another (yeah, I like it when they do it, it makes everything soooo much easier for them) they suffer nearly no misunderstandings but come to truly love and value each other.

I really liked the development of Darcy’s and Elizabeth’s relationship in this variation. I always like it when they are friends because they come to realize that they have many things in common like their loyalty to those they love or their love of books and being outdoors. In this variation they fortunately have no problems that their friendship develops to love and that this may mean the end of their friendship. They decide that they can be friends and lovers. In my opinion, with this decision, they have built a powerful base for a satisfying and prosperous union. And it feels most natural that they come to this conclusion.

Jane’s behaviour vexed me most of the time very much. In this variation Jane is not too good for the world, she rather let her own feelings and fears dictate her behaviour and influence her relationship with her sister. She also tries to interfere where she has no right to do so and this causes a change in her relationship with Elizabeth. I will not tell too much because Jane's reasons for her change in behaviour and attitude are a development and an important part of the story but, in my opinion, Jane is rather selfish in this variation. She is not mean but she puts her own comfort above that of her sister. She definitely acts not like the angel everyone sees in her.

I really like that Elizabeth and Mary become closer in this variation because of Jane’s changed manners. I always enjoy it when Mary is a sensible young woman who is not sufficiently valued only because she is simply overlooked. This is also the case here. Only after her bond with Jane is no longer that close due to Jane’s actions Elizabeth comes to value Mary’s company and her insides on various topics. I really like this new sisterly bond and the companionship they develop.

I also enjoyed the development of Bingley. In the beginning he, as always, relies on his sisters and friend Darcy to guide him. Naturally what they want is not always what he wants in his heart. He therefore nearly loses his chance of happiness because he lets his life be dictated by others. Fortunately he becomes aware of this, ends his dependence and works to improve himself to finally become a man he can be proud of. With his development he matures and can also better comprehend those around him which leads to his eventual happiness.

As always Caroline and Wickham, each with their own goals and schemes, try to intervene in Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship. Fortunately they are not successful in the end and, mostly, get what they deserve.

If you like to know how an honest conversation between Darcy and Elizabeth can first lead to friendship and eventually to love you should read this excellent book.

I highly recommend it.

Melissa Anne has become an automatic read for me. This book follows a favorite formula of mine where Elizabeth and Darcy become a team early and work together through whatever strife comes their way.

This book is aptly named. Early on both Elizabeth and Darcy transfer the very best of their friendship, from Jane and Bingley, to each other. From there friendship blossoms into love. A most interesting aspect of this book is what happens between Elizabeth and Jane once she becomes friends with Darcy. This is not a typical Jane character. I’ll be honest with you, you will probably want to slap her for her behavior and naivety more than once when you read this.

This Jane is a curious mixture of naivety, jealousy, superiority and insecurity. She begins a rift in the sisters’ relationship by rebuking Elizabeth and being jealous of the relationship she sees blooming between Elizabeth and Darcy. She is unable to reconcile that Elizabeth can not only forgive Darcy, but that Darcy is mature and dedicated to his courtship with Elizabeth while Bingley languishes in his efforts at forging a relationship with herself. She is further disconcerted when she disregards Elizabeth’s warnings and heeds the lies of Caroline Bingley and Wickham, believing their stories over the explanations of her sister who has been her life-long friend.

The split between Jane and Elizabeth is the main conflict in the story. Between Jane’s own personal issues and interference with other bad actors a schism develops that, while dividing Jane and Elizabeth, causes Elizabeth to draw closer to Darcy.

Although it begins with friendship Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship evolves into the deepest of love. It is a beautiful journey.

Melissa Anne covers a lot of issues in this book. I couldn’t put it down. It is a wonderful tale where all the main characters play key parts as the story unfolds.

The backdrop of the entire story is the romance between Darcy and Elizabeth because they achieve open and honest communication early in the book which enables their love to flourish. It is against this backdrop that we watch the antics of all the other characters.

I enjoyed seeing what might happen if Jane Bennet’s beauty and serene nature fell second to Elizabeth’s vivacious personality and her intellect. Fuelled by the ‘seeds of doubt’ deliberately planted by Caroline Bingley and George Wickham, Jane’s jealousy and spitefulness creates a serious rupture in a sisterly bond that all take for granted when we read these P&P variations. It usually seems that the affection between Jane and Elizabeth is unshakeable. I found it both refreshing and a little sad as I wondered how it could possibly be resolved. The author managed it beautifully. The bad feelings between the sisters made them seem more like real people in a real-life situation and trouble does not last too long before lessons are learned and love and humility save the day.

The character who has the most to achieve is Charles Bingley. His efforts to deal with his sister, Caroline’s delusions and poor behaviour take him away from Hertfordshire for a protracted period snd his constancy is questioned by both Jane Bennet and her father. Bingley actually has to put in some hard work to earn their esteem. THAT was a very good storyline.

A lot happens in this book. All the main characters like Lady Catherine, the Matlocks, Georgiana Darcy, all the Bennets have key parts to play but we follow each story knowing that Darcy and Elizabeth are committed to each other.

This is a very readable, very enjoyable book. I loved it.

Mrs Nicholls strikes the match

The story begins with Elizabeth nursing Jane at Netherfield. Darcy comes upon Elizabeth and Mrs Nicholls tending to an injured maid. Despite Miss Bingley’s refusal to call for the apothecary, Darcy asks that one be called. Then Mrs. Nicholls let it slip (or was it a slip? Hmm) that Darcy also kindly assisted a tenant family in need. While Elizabeth tries to reconcile such kindnesses and generosity coming from the disagreeable man she knows, Mrs. Nicholls calls attention to the kindnesses Elizabeth performs for tenants not her own.

The tinder

Elizabeth baldly tells Darcy that he is an enigma. An honest conversation between them sparks the flame of friendship. That’s just the first chapter. By chapter two, they agree to a courtship. I personally love stories where Darcy and Elizabeth join forces at the beginning to stand against all obstacles presented throughout the rest of the story. That’s why Melissa Anne is one of my favorite authors whose books go straight into my Read Again collection.

The Very Best of Friends gives us a troublesome Collins, manipulative Miss Bingley and Wickham, and a marriage-minded Mrs Bennet. The twist surrounds Jane, who vacillates between jealousy and big sister protector. As a result, Mary plays a larger role. That’s another trope I really like.

Despite others trying to douse the fire of romance, Darcy and Elizabeth’s courtship keeps adding fuel until it burns with the best kind of love. When the couple are lovers and the very best of friends.

The Very Best of Friends now resides in my Read Again collections. I read this as an Advanced Reader.

This story is a really sweet, refreshing take on Darcy and Elizabeth, and I loved how naturally their relationship grows. Instead of getting stuck in misunderstandings, they actually talk to each other early on, and that honesty sets the tone for everything that follows. Watching them become true friends first makes their romance feel deeper and more believable.
I also liked how the book shows the difference between their relationship and Jane and Bingley’s. Darcy and Elizabeth do the hard work—sharing truths, facing uncomfortable moments, and choosing to understand each other. It gives their love a solid foundation that feels earned.
Even though the story is low‑angst, there’s still plenty going on. Miss Bingley, Lady Catherine, Wickham, and even Jane stir up trouble in their own ways, but nothing ever feels over the top. And for readers who enjoy lots of Darcy‑and‑Elizabeth time on the page, this book definitely delivers.
The side characters get nice moments too—Georgiana, Mary, Bingley, and even Mrs. Bennet have scenes that add humor and heart. The Wickham solution is clever and satisfying, and the whole story moves at a pace that feels right for a friendship‑to‑love arc.
In the end, this variation is all about trust, communication, and the kind of love that grows because two people choose to be honest with each other. It’s warm, easy to read, and full of charm. Melissa Anne continues to be a must‑read author for JAFF fans, and this is one I’d happily pick up again.
I read this book in installments as it was being written and then received an ARC. This is my honest review.

What is real friendship?
Thinking about my review after having read a copy in advance several ideas popped up in my mind and I had the headline: “A guide for couples” and all relationships. And then appeared the questions: What exactly is friendship? How does one get there? When do I know if am a real friend to someone? And other rather “philosophical” (or everyday?) questions – each of the readers can go more into the depth of it herself/himself.
I’ll mention some ideas all the same 😊 The famous “to get to know you better” is giving a hint - and yet is dancing, flirting, small-talk, shyly or boldly fluttering with the eyes or flattering enough? I guess real conversation is the better way, perhaps also the more challenging! Real conversation contains honesty, respect, truthfulness, an open mind, the courage to ask and to listen and also to speak and to answer.
Sometimes we fear to ask or to answer because of former bad experiences or because we don’t want to hurt the other person, and we might also feel shame or lack of self-worth. Whatever the reason, something is lacking to build a very solid foundation and it is not sure if the friendship can survive commotions.
Elizabeth and Darcy had the courage to ask and to listen, to speak and to answer and these open conversations led to real friendship and then to a deep and unwavering love.
I loved this book and I also loved/hated the side-story involving “old acquaintances” – amusing and annoying😊 Well done!

Friendship & communication are the central themes

We open the story at Netherfield with Elizabeth helping a maid who was hurt. Darcy steps in to assist, thus begins Elizabeth's reevaluation of his character. Elizabeth boldly grabs the bull by the horns and ends up having a very deep, honest, and open conversation with him. This sets the solid foundation for their growing friendship, which leads to more.

Overall, it is a low angst story, but we still have to deal with jealousy, envy, revenge, greed, and more. For those who love lots of Darcy and Elizabeth time together on the page, this will make you happy. Their relationship from start to marriage may feel rushed (a few months), but it felt appropriate for this context, especially for the amount of time they took building their friendship and communication. I liked seeing Bingley, Georgiana, Jane, and Mary's characters were portrayed and the growth in each. Oh, a shout-out for Mrs Bennet when a certain uninvited individual shows up.

I read some of this as the author was sharing it via her posts and the I was privileged to do an ARC read but then borrowed the final product via KU and liked the few subtle changes. Clearly, this is one I will gladly read again!

Delightful!

Melissa Anne has done it again! Her take on P&P variations is very unique! This book was dear to my heart, as Darcy and Elizabeth started their journey to love as best friends — as did I and my husband. To have the special love of a spouse who is also your best friend is wonderful, especially as it doesn’t always happen.

This story built itself on this premise and it was an interesting comparison against Bingley and Jane. I’ve always felt that there is so much growth in the relationship of Elizabeth and Darcy that is absent with Jane and Bingley. The author explores that idea, shows the original shallowness in their relationship and shows the actual growth of respect, understanding, and eventual love.

One other item to point out is the truths shared between Elizabeth and Darcy, even those most painful and how that cemented even more their respect and love. An excellent book.

Really enjoyed this lovely read from Melissa Anne.

The focus on the importance of friendship and trust in romantic relationships was really lovely to read, especially given in Austen’s world there are plenty of marriages based on far shakier ground.
It was very realistic in showing that where trust had been damaged it took time for that to be repaired as well.

I also really liked Jane’s characterisation in this story. Normally she’s either a saint or a devil, and it was really refreshing to have a more rounded, human character, who could falter and make mistakes but still essentially be a good person.

Also witnessing Lizzy read Darcy the riot act is always an excellent time.

Would recommend!

I received this book for as an ARC reader but also purchased a copy of the book to have the final version and because I loved it.
The story starts with an honest conversation between Elizabeth and Darcy where misunderstandings and mistaken assumptions are laid to rest and they determine to begin again. Through the course of the first half of the book Darcy woos Elizabeth and they become the best of friends and romantic partners. Their path to a happily ever after is not entirely smooth, though, as Miss Bingley, Lady Catherine, Wickham, and even to a small extent, Jane, try to disrupt their romance. In the end, all issues are overcome and ODC reach their well deserved HEA.
I highly recommend this book as well as the others written by Melissa Anne, as she is a talented author of JAFF.

I enjoyed The Very Best of Friends immensely. The development of Darcy and Elizabeth's relationship from friendship to love is moving. I found the scene of their converation and his declaration of love at Netherfield wonderful and one of the most romantic I have recently read. The tenderness and caring in their relationship is heartmelting. Jane in this variation has more depth of character. She is jealous and insecure and allows people with dishonorable intentions to poison her mind and almost ruin her courtship with Bingley. I was secretly hoping that Mary and Colonel Fitzwilliam would fall in love, but alas, it was not to be. I very much recommend this story. It is delightful and romantic and the satisfaction at Caroline and Wickham getting what they deserve is great.

Excellent story

While attending Jane at Netherfield, Elizabeth comes to realize that Darcy isn’t the man she thought he was. After some frank discussions, they become more comfortable together. While they grow closer, others scheme to interfere. Unlike in most variations, much of this scheming targets Jane’s kindness and willingness to trust in an effort to poison her against Darcy and even Bingley. The schemers hope to induce Jane to “protect” Elizabeth even if Elizabeth doesn’t want that protection.

The Very Best of Friends is largely low angst. As usual, Melissa Anne’s writing is excellent and flows smoothly. If you enjoy variations where ODC develop an early understanding and work together, I recommend this for your reading pleasure. I received an advanced reader copy.

This is one of my "Favourite Pride and Prejudice Variations" till now! I have loved the work of Melissa Anne before, and she does not disappoint now either!
I really love when you get Elizabeth and Darcy to talk honestly early on and change their perspective of things! I love the way they interact and care for one another (and others). And we also get to know them through troubles and challenges.
I did not like Jane all the time here, but she alters when she starts to understand how things stand and manage to cope with her jealousy.
I highly recommend this story to all lovers of Elizabeth and Darcy!

I received an ARC and I am leaving this review of my own will.

This clean and uplifting JAFF novel stuck pretty close to the original story, and I noticed and loved how the characters grew and developed, both in their romance and in their family relationships! There was discussion about prostitution, mistresses, and what happens on the wedding night… nothing explicit, but they were there. I believe they were in the book to showcase the characters of Elizabeth, Darcy & Mrs. Bennett, and to provide context for the time period. I received an ARC copy and this is my review.

A wonderful read

This was a wonderful book. I read this as it was being written and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is very low angst, but its plot catches you and keeps you. I got both a paper copy and the Kindle copy for my personal library. I will only give a slight spoiler....it starts right after Jane gets sick. So, it diverges from cannon at that point. To me this author is a must buy. She writes well and her writing is smooth.

Sweet and loving

Several interesting change ups from canon, which allow Elizabeth and Darcy to remove enough of their misunderstandings to become friends and more. Jane develops more human and challenging characteristics while Caroline is even more devious and difficult despite Bingley being firm with her. Wickham causes problems, the Colonel helps out, Mr. Bennet is quirky and Mrs. Bennet is stressful. A good time is had by all. Very nicely written.

What a fabulous read. Very little angst but lots of twists and turns.

Elizabeth and Darcy resolve their misunderstandings as the story unfolds whilst characters try to manipulate the outcome.

I have already ordered a physical copy and can’t wait for it to be on audible so I can have the complete set.

Highly recommend.

Charming story

What a fresh beginning for ODC to bring friendship before courtship. This idea separates the story from canon by a truly insignificant degree. They still indur misunderstandings and some trials. Facing life with a friend or companion is how God intended. This is a very satisfying read that I would highly recommend .

Very Enjoyable!!

I love it when Darcy and Elizabeth get past the insult and become friends and then lovers. I also love a mildly bad Jane, and Lydia never getting the chance to ruin herself or the family. I give it 5 stars very happily.
