A cozy mystery series set on Madrona Island, a fictional island within the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State. As a fourth generation islander, Caitlin Hart is struggling to make her way as the economy and culture of the island evolves toward a tourism based industry. Cait lives in a cabin on her aunt's oceanfront estate where she helps her aunt run Harthaven Cat Sanctuary. When she isn't working with the cats, she helps best friend Tara, operate the coffee bar/bookstore/cat lounge they own, named Coffee Cat Books. In the third book in the series, Cait’s friend Cody buys the old newspaper and discovers a previously unpublished edition that details a murder that occurred decades ago. The fact that the story was written but never published piques the curiosity of the friends, who decide to delve into a cold case that reaches back fifty years. When the truth is discovered they struggle with the ramifications of what they have uncovered. They know that revealing it will rock the small island community to its core.
Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home. Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

I love the cover of this one the best of all three books out in this series so far. Its just darling!!
I felt the story line really picked up in this one again. I love the descriptions of the island, the way the author describes the water, the beach, the cabins, the town, just the beauty of it all in general.
The end of this book had a huge BOMB shell. I sat with my mouth open for a couple of minutes, couldn't believe what our main character Cait put together.
I love how the cats are magical in each story as well, they seem to point Cait in the right direction every time. I DO look forward to a book 4, as of yet, one has not been published. So, I am going to start the Zoe Donovan series by the same author, Kathi Daley, and I hate to say this but I find even better than this series of books and thats saying something huge, as I loved Whales and Tails.. I recommend any book by Kathi Daley. You will NOT be disappointed.
Caitlin Hart is back again in this third installment of the Whales and Tails mysteries. Poor Caitlin again stumbles across another body, and her and her friend Cody get themselves involved in trying to uncover what happened. Cait also gets some help from a kitten named Emily, that Tansy sent over. Emily is very helpful in her clues to Cait. There is also a cold case involved in this mystery, can Cait get to the bottom of it? You must read it to find out! I love the characters in this series, they are very likable, and I love how they are developing in each book. There is also a touch of romance that I hope continues. I look forward to the next in the series.
This is the third book in Kathi Daley's Whales and Tails Mystery series. With great creativity and an imagination that flows smoothly on to every page, Kathi Daley brings us a continuation of the adventures of Caitlin Hart and her friends in the Madrona Islands. Each adventure introduces a cat or kitten sent by Tansy and Bella to assist Cait in solving a mystery and/or addressing unanswered questions from earlier books in the series. In Grimm’s Furry Tail, a kitten named Emily enters Cait’s life. This story begins the day after the events in "The Mad Catter" concluded. Cody is buying the old newspaper office from the former editor who has retired and moved to the mainland. While sorting through the detritus he finds a journal and an old newspaper from 26 years ago that was never published. The front page article in that paper was written about a murder. Another newspaper with the same date was printed and distributed but it did NOT have the article about a murder! Cody and Caitlyn are curious, of course, and want to figure out what happened and why it was not published. Caitlin stumbles upon another body after solving a recent murder. The victim is the former owner of the local newspaper who was supposed to meet with her friend Cody who is buying the old newspaper office from him. Orson, the former editor, was investigating an old story. While sorting through the boxes left in the newspaper storage Cody finds a journal and 2 old newspaper stories from 26 years ago one published and one unpublished. Did a murder occur or didn’t one? Orson is returning to the island to pack up his stuff. Before he makes it to his former office, or meets with Cody, he was murdered.
Typical of small town living, as questions are asked and lead to answers, the gossip mill is active, as well as scandal(s), making room for more questions, that lead to answers. There are twists and turns to the plot and mysteries abound together with the revelation of many secrets. Perhaps they should not be shared. Vivid descriptions of the beauty of the Islands, the ocean, the sunrises and the sunsets make me wish I could live there with Cait, Aunt Maggie, and all their friends. A hint of romance between Cait and Cody makes me happy. I can’t wait to read how their relationship grows!
Once I started, I couldn’t stop reading this book until it was finished. Kathi Daley amazes me. She currently writes four series, including the "Whales & Tails Mystery Series.", "Zoe Donovan Series", "TJ Jensen Paradise Lake Series" and her newest series is the "Seacliff High" written for teen and adults. I highly recommend any and all of Kathi's books to anyone of any age who enjoys a good, clean mystery. As with all of Kathi Daley’s books, “Grimm’s Furry Tail” can be enjoyed without reading the earlier books in the series. However, I prefer to read the series in order. I like the continuity, as well as the setting for the novel, the small town on the island. And, of course, the cats! I highly recommend this novel for readers of all ages who enjoy cozy mysteries with a potential to include romance, in which the sleuth is a feisty young woman. There are delicious recipes included in the book, and I am looking forward to sampling a number of them.
It always seems that Cait always finds herself in these situations where she finds a dead body and this time there's is no exception. Cait and her friend Cody, whom also shares a romantic past with Cait are on the case of a mysterious murder that occured twenty six years ago. Cody just purchased the town newspaper, Madrona Island News from the current owner, Orson. While in the newspaper office Cody came across the unpublished article and wonders why it was never published and soon along with Cait starts to investigate and all the pieces start falling together.
Cody wants to find out why this article was never published and decides to ask Orson about it so he calls him and Orson's son tells him that is already on his way to the Island. Cody then wonders why but it will all soon start to unravel.
While riding her bike on the bike trail along the beach, Cait comes across a body buried in the sand that is not moving she then calls the police to report it. Cait finds it so hard to believe that there could be yet another murder after the two previous ones on her beloved Island home.
They were all surprised to find that it was the previous owner of the news paper, Madrona Island News, Orson. But was he really murdered or was it just a terrible accident? and Cait is wondering if the reason why he is dead is because of Cait and Cody investigating the unpublished Orson wrote so many years ago. It is discovered that Orson was in fact murdered now Cait and Cody want to find the truth about this article and it's story and why Orson was murdered and what his connection could possibly.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention a cute, adorable kitten named Emily that shows up at Cait's door. Cait once again wonders if she is here to help her solve the mystery of the article and Orson's murder, Emily's hidden clues could unlock the mystery and solve the murder if only Cait will connect the dots.
A Brilliantly written cozy mystery with charming characters with a homey setting on Madrona Island it really makes you want to be there. A favorite for me is Cait's aunt Maggie's cat Sanctuary where she takes in abandoned and helps solve the over population of feral cats on the island by providing them good homes and hope that her character is brought more to the forefront and developed in future books considering her past and what she has been through. Kathi Daley never fails with the telling of this tail and of the mystery and murder solving adventures of Cait and her friends and residents of Madrona Island. Looking forward to reading and reviewing the next in this series.
Cait is out riding her bike when she stumbles across another dead body. This murdered victim is the former owner of the newspaper who has returned to tie up loose ends. But Cait and her friend, Cody, are afraid he has been murdered because of an unpublished newspaper article that they have uncovered. They fear that the victim was murdered because of them and they feel responsible to find the killer. Besides trying to solve that mystery, they are also curious about the unpublished article that also involves a murder years ago. Why was it never published and how come that case was never solved? Cait and her friends will be kept extremely busy trying to find the answers to all their questions.
As is the case in the other books in the series, there is a cat (actually in this book a kitten) that is instrumental in helping to solve the murder. I really enjoy that the cats help in pointing Cait in the right direction in her investigation. It adds a touch of paranormal and whimsy to these books, and I love that. I think that’s one of the things that set this cozy series apart from many others.
Another thing that makes these cozies some of the best ones that I have read is the way Kathi Daley creates the settings and her characters. All of the characters are well developed, well rounded and realistic and are people you would like to be friends with. I enjoy catching up with what is happening in their lives. It is great to watch romances developing and I look forward to seeing where they will eventually end up. Some of the characters are a little quirky and others are a little mysterious but they are all worth getting to know. And the small town setting is a place I would love to visit.
The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy clean read. This book is appropriate for all ages and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I would suggest reading the first two books in the series first just so that you can see the characters developing, although this book could be read as a stand alone. Do yourself a favor and check out this series as well as Kathi Daley’s other series. You are sure to find a new favorite author.
This third book in the series takes place immediately following The Mad Catter. If you need to be caught up, there is a refresher at chapter 6.
It is June, and tourists are returning to the island. Progress is being made on Coffee Cat Books and Caitlin Hart, her brother and friends get together quite often. Mysteriously Caitlin hears a dripping faucet in the middle of the night. This allows her to discover a kitten at her door. She instinctively knows Tansy, a local witch must have sent her. In each book a cat of some sort helps figure out the clues. Previously, Cait and her good friend Cody discovered information on a murder from 26 years prior. More information suggests that a woman from that story is a missing heiress. Similar to Koko, the famous cat from the popular Cat Who mysteries, Emily, the kitten, knocks down a book of fairy tales leading Caitlin to wonder what this clue means.
As secrets are exposed and mysteries appear to be solved, facts come to light that raise more questions, more things that need investigating. Pay attention and you may even learn some life lessons as you read. "Just remember, with knowing comes a burden that, at times,is best carried alone."
The book ends before the July 4th parade. I am loving this new series from Kathi Daley. The town and all its interesting characters draw me in.
I did receive this book in exchange for my honest review
The second book in the Whales & Tails series left the reader with a number of questions & mysteries to be solved. This book, the third in the series, continues the "tails" of Caitlyn Hart & the inhabitants of Madrona Island, a fictional island in the San Juan chain. Will the contentious condo development proceed? Will Cait's aunt Maggie fully recover and win a seat on the island council? What was the decades old unsolved murder & will it affect the present day? Will Cait & her friend Tara finish their redevelopment of the cannery? Will Cody stay on the island & will his friendship with Cait proceed to a relationship? Unfortunately, or fortunately depending upon your perspective, the reader is still left with some unsolved questions at the end of the book. Apparently there will be a sequel! I like the main characters in these books, the setting and the premise. That said, I did not like the hurried denouement in this book. I also thought that the story left the reader with too many loose ends. This is a fast, light and enjoyable cozy mystery.
In the third book in the series, Kathi Daley brings us the adventures of Caitlin Hart and her friends in the Madrona Islands as they solve another case.
Caitlin once again stumbles across another body after solving another killing. The victim is the former owner of the local newspaper who was supposed to meet with her friend Cody who is investigating an old story.
Cody finds an unpublished edition while going through the old newspaper that reports of a murder fifty years ago that was never solved. As Cait and her friends find themselves going deeper into the former owner murder they are drawn in the past as secrets are revealed, Some secrets that are better not revealed.
Once again Kathi Daley brings us another riveting read that flows.
Book 3 of the Whales and Tails Cozy series more than met my expectations with the astonishing results unveiled to several unsolved mysteries on the beautiful San Juan island of Madrona. Emily, a tiny kitten, finds her way to Caitlin, and magically helps her with her sleuthing. There is surprise after surprise revealed as this story progresses. I enjoy the fact that Cait and Cody have become good friends before taking their relationship further. All the regular secondary characters are likeable, and I can see them as my own friends and family, and of course, I love all the pets. I don't want to give much of the story away so that each reader can fully enjoy it on their own!!
I received a complimentary ebook copy from the author. My review is my own personal opinion.
The third book in the Whales and Tail seCries is the best book. Cait is awakened at night by faucet dripping. It seems to be saying Em ily over and over again. When goes she goes to fix the faucet she find a yellow kitten at her door. Tamsy tells the kitten will help solve a mystery and when she finds the answer my not like it. Cody is buying the island's paper and he finds some in the back issues (26 years) that was never used. This intrigues Cait and Cody. They start to explore the issue. Another body was found by Cait and it turns out to be the owner of the newspaper. The next book is on my MBR list
Cody has bought the local newspaper and moved back to the island permanently. He has discovered a cold case murder mystery in the newspaper morgue's files and he and Caitlin are working to solve it. Before they get a chance to talk to the former owner and editor who wrote the piece, Caitlin discovers his body on a bike trail. This was a fascinating adventure that keeps you on the edge until you finish it. A complex and well plotted story that blends yesterday's events with the current events and inhabitants of the island. We end as Cody takes over the paper and Caitlin and Tara prepare to open their new business. I can't wait to read the next book in this entertaining series.
It's going to be a little hard trying to review this without giving too much away, because there is so much to this book. There is an old murder mystery, does it tie into a new one? The mystery had plenty of twists and turns and side stories. I found it interesting that this story picks up where the last book left off, however if you haven't read the last book, I don't think that you will have any trouble reading it as a stand alone. I love the characters and their interaction with each other, young, old and quirky. I definitely will continue on with this series.
Once again Kathi has written another winning mystery. It amazes me with all the ideas she comes up with on such a little island. So full of twists and turns, I never did figure it out until she revealed the conclusion, through I did figure out the secret that she would need to keep hidden a little while earlier in the story. Looking forward to the next book.
Kindle Unlimited liked it but didn't love it hence 4 stars. Wasn't anything stupid such as typos or anything like that, just didn't love this.

Caitlin solves another mystery with a little help from her furry friends. I love the way Kathi Daley includes the animals in solving the crimes. In Grimm's Furry Tail, there are not only mysteries solved, but secrets uncovered. Some secrets are shared and some have to be kept. Caitlin isn't always the best at keeping quite, but this time she must. The romances are very slow to bloom, but it's the mystery we came for, the romance is a bonus. The books are tied together so nicely, don't miss this series. Gotta read them all! Starting the next in the series now.
If you enjoy old-time soap operas, then give this series a try. You will find interesting characters with entertaining interactions. Any violence takes place "offscreen" and so does any sexual activity. Don't expect all of the strings to be tied up in a neat bow. One or more of them is probably going to turn up in the next book/episode in the series. The more interesting you find the small time antics of the characters, the more you will enjoy the series.
Ms Daley's books (all except the H.S. series and I might start*) have been keeping me alive at an extremely low point in my life. I just finished #19 in Whales and Tails and I've read all her other series. All the series give me a mood lift, but now I'm done. * Wish it was possible for her to write faster. I'm sure I'm not the only reader who enjoys the mysteries, but also her ability to aptly describe relationships. Thank you Kathi Daley.

Another hit from Kathi Daley! I just love the characters and the warmth of the island. It genuinely feels cozy and kept me turning page after page. It was great to take an old mystery and bring it back into the light and tie it in with the present. Such a great story that held several twists I did not see coming. The last page had my jaw dropping! I am definitely going to continue on with the series.
The 3rd book in the cozy mystery series from Kathi Daley, Cait is helped by Emily, the black cat who appears when she and Cody look into the mystery of a murder of a wealthy couple and subsequent disappearance of their daughter.
Cody has bought the local paper, and in sorting through old issues he finds a report of the murder, written by the old owner of the paper which was never published. Hen the old owner of the paper turns up dead on the island, Cody and Cait feel they are being warned off looking into the mystery.
I'm really enjoying these books, easy to read and lose yourself in. Best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and series.
Frequently if there are a lot of things going on...
If there are so ma t twists and complications I start needing a graph. But with this series, I do not have that issue. They are all interesting and well developed and everyone has his or her secrets, and things are always hopping and yet i have stayed focused.
There is just so much to enjoy in this series. This time I really took in the love of beach life. As someone in the middle of th U.S., I have not had the experience of sea side life, the details in this tale fill in the gap nicely. The mystery is unique, and not over played. Truly a enjoyable read.
I love a Good Cozy Mystery and this book is high on my list. I loved the plot, and the interesting cast of characters , old and new. I know cozy mystery fans will grab each book in this series.
Caitlin is at it again! The cats who help her solve mysteries are my favorite parts of this series. This one stands out because we all are let in on the secret that must stay a secret——at least part of it. Very enjoyable and satisfying.
This book was really good , the story kept me imagining the way the canary was being transformed into an awesome book , coffee, cat scoping store , it was getting me excited how it was coming to life. The mystery in this book was really good too.
Little kitten Emily helps to solve several mysteries twined up together in the curious murder case of a local man, a missing heiress, and other things. Great read.
I especially like the background for this story. Makes me want to live in a little cabin on a beach somewhere. Looking for ward to reading more of this series by Kathi Daley. !!!
I so did not see that coming! Wow- this is the third book of the series and they just keep getting better and better. It's a winner! I'm glad there are plenty more to go. Must read book and series.
