Snowed in With You

Eli

There was a time when I thought my new stepbrother, Nathan Bailey, and I could be friends. Best friends, even. But then I walked past his room and hear his friends make fun of me. Instead of defending me, he laughs with them. And his clueless act when I give him the cold shoulder? That just seals the deal. I hate Nathan Bailey.

The only thing that can be worse than being forced to drive to our family’s annual Christmas retreat with him is being caught in a snowstorm and trapped in a different cabin. Alone.

Nathan

When my dad married Eli Madison’s mom, I was excited about the possibility of having a brother. We seemed to be on our way to a great friendship when Eli suddenly stopped speaking to me. He’s been a cute, angry kitten for years now, and I don’t know why. It would help if he talked to me, but when he isn’t ignoring me, his words drip with disdain. What I do know is that Eli Madison hates me.

The only good thing about being trapped in this cabin with him is that he can finally tell me what I did wrong all those years ago… and maybe I can figure out why cute is the first word that comes to mind when I think of him. My stepbrother.

Snowed in With You is a standalone MM Christmas story featuring grumpy-only-to-you/sunshine stepbrothers, a bi-awakening, only one fireplace, and a couple of Corio Heights cameos.

if you cut all the incessant and unnecessary repetition, this turns into a very nice, quick 60-page novella.

also, the line 'is his hot rod as velvety as the rest of his skin' will haunt me forever thanks for that 🫠

Eli has hated his stepbrother Nathan ever since he overheard his friends making fun of him and Nathan did nothing to defend him. The fact that Nathan acts clueless about the entire thing just grinds Eli's gears even more!

Worst of all, Nathan is his ride to their family's Christmas retreat—a fate worse than death in Eli's eyes. & if being forced to spend time with him wasn’t bad enough, thanks to a little detour along the way, he and Nathan are stuck weathering out a snowstorm in Nathan's uncle's empty cabin.

The crappy situation has tensions rising between them, and things finally come to a breaking point. When the truth outs, Nathan claims that it was all a misunderstanding, and Eli’s feelings for his stepbrother become even more confusing. Especially when he and Nathan start acting not so brotherly.

Snowed In With You was so cute! I'm not usually a fan of the miscommunication trope, but I was so glad when Nathan and Eli finally cleared the air between them. I loved all the snarky banter and sizzling chemistry between them prior to them realizing their feelings for one another, and how Nathan didn't even flinch when things started heating up between the two of them.

Overall, this was super cozy and fun, and all around a good time!

Audiobook is narrated by Zachary Zaba - excellent as always! I love ZZ's voice especially for twink MCs and so of course he does an especially good job with Eli. The voices for the characters are distinct and I always knew which MC was talking. Really enjoyed listening!

Eli and Nathan are stepbrothers, but soon after the family started living together, Eli overheard something from Nathan and his friends that was homophobic. Ever since then, Eli has been very snarky and prickly to Nathan, despite Nathan trying to be friendly with him. However, things come to a head when they are both forced to ride together - just the two of them - to a holiday family event and they get snowed in. I love how all this time together gives them a chance to clear up misunderstandings and truly get to know one another. Their chemistry is hot and their banter is fun/funny! I loved the cozy, holiday background and how they not only discover who the other is, but Eli figures out what he wants to do with his life. Their family is an involved one and I love how supportive they end up being. This is a cute holiday romance with feels and spice - just perfect when the weather is bad outside.

What to Expect:
*MM holiday romance
*one-sided enemies to lovers
*stepbrothers
*forced proximity
*snowed in
*black cat/golden retriever
*queer awakening
*lots of feels
*low angst
*supportive family

Nothing was necessarily wrong, I was entertained at first. I’m just so done with the smaller-skinny-shy-blushing-bottom-virgin and the bigger-sporty-muscular-smirking-top. There is nothing more unoriginal out there!!!! Like I’ve seen this film before…. about 150 times literally. So to make it clear: THIS IS A ME ISSUE, NOT BOOK ISSUE.

You kissed him and now you can’t look at him without blushing? GIVE ME A BREAK

Not gonna lie this MM holiday romance novella between stepbrothers was pretty cringe for me. They get snowed in together, there are grudges from a bullying incident in the past, one is a virgin and they become serious super fast. It was all just ick and only ok on audio. Very skippable and not one i would go out of my way to recommend.

This was a super sweet and cozy Christmas Story.
There is also the fact that Eli and Nathan are stepbrothers, and that adds that extra kick and element of forbidden and confusion to the mix, as does the fact that Nathan has (apparently) never been attracted to men.
I adored Eli’s cut grumpiness. Which is exclusively directed towards Nathan, as he is a big ol’ ray of sunshine with everyone else. As soon as they get snowed in together and Eli is forced to be in Nathan’s presence long enough to clear the air of something that happened years prior, all the hatred and his walls crumble pretty quickly.
I also loved Nathan: he’s steadfast and sure of himself enough not to freak out when he finds himself attracted to another man, who also just happens to be his stepbrother. Growly, possessive Nathan was quite funny, too.
I loved Zachary Zaba’s performance; I don’t know why he is not mentioned more when beloved narrators are listed, because he always does a great job portraying different characters and emotions, in my opinion.

What a great festive read! It has a hint of enemies to lovers, though it's only Eli who 'hates' his stepbrother, Nathan. Nathan wishes they had the friendship that started when they first met but something Eli overheard put an instant stop to that.
Now they're forced to share a car ride to head up to the cabin for their family Christmas vacation, with a little pitstop that has them snowed in together as well!
Eli is hilarious in his strong dislike and comments towards Nathan, whereas Nathan just tries to get along, and even become friends. Though, maybe the physical help he offered was a step over that line! It's sweet, hot, funny and heartwarming as these two come together Christmas (pun intended!) and have to figure out what comes next!
A highly recommended festive romance that has all the warm feels and a HEA that both men want, and need. Eli is so sweet in what he offers Nathan towards the end and I enjoyed the lack of angst in regards to the bi-awakening and a certain conversation with their parents.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Step brother dynamics, a touch of enemies to lovers, forced proximity in a cosy cabin, the bi awakening thread, the grumpy sunshine contrast. On paper, it should have worked beautifully for me. In practice, it was a mixed experience.

The premise was promising. The execution wobbled for me in two main areas.

My first struggle was with the writing style, especially the inner monologues. Eli occasionally addresses the reader directly or frames his thoughts in a way that feels performative. It distances me from the character rather than pulling me closer, and I had the same reaction in a few of Nathan’s inner moments as well. It is not quite breaking the fourth wall, but it brushes against that feeling in a way I find distracting in books.

The second issue is the bi awakening, or gay for you, aspect. Even though Nathan later mentions he may have always been drawn to Eli, the first intimate moment arrives without any groundwork in either point of view. There is no real hesitation, no confusion, no guilt, no build up. Considering the situation involves stepbrothers who were never close and one of them openly dislikes the other, the scene needed a firmer emotional bridge. The later chapters do more to establish that connection, and their dynamic becomes more coherent, but in the particular moment it happened I found myself thinking this leap does feel pretty rushed. Not icky, not uncomfortable, just not organic.

Despite these issues, there are still warm, engaging moments in the story, and I can see why many readers will enjoy the snowed in, opposites attract atmosphere with the forbidden touch. For me, it simply didn’t come together as smoothly as I hoped, which is why it sits at a solid three stars.

Snowed in with You by Rye Cox is part of the Corio Heights universe. Nathan and Eli have been stepbrothers for years. They had a falling out after Eli heard Nathan’s friends talking about him in a derogatory way. While traveling to the family’s cabin for Christmas break, they get stranded at Nathan’s uncle’s cabin. I really enjoyed this one. Eli was so prickly and Nathan was captivated by that. It made me laugh. I loved how into Eli Nathan was. Everything about him was intriguing. The romance was sweet and the family pretty understanding. I just really enjoyed reading this one. I think I had a smile on my face the whole time. I am going to need to go back and read the two books from the Corio Heights series to get the backstories of a few of the characters mentioned here. This was the perfect holiday read!

I received an ARC from the author for my honest review.

This book was everything you want in a stepbrothers holiday romance - an opposites attract, grumpy/sunshine vibe with a past hurt/misunderstanding, a little forced proximity and a whole lot of awakened feelings! I totally vibed off the tension and the bi awakening - and I also love that when their relationship grew, it was explosive and exponential...

If you've read Rye's other stories you'll catch cameos from Corio Heights couples, but even if this is your first read from this author, you'll truly enjoy the experience.

I love this story. Listened to the audiobook. They're adorable. I love how much of a fiery kitten Eli is. And Nathan has no clue why. The way the story goes, with them carpooling to a family christmas away, getting snowed in, power outage, and having to keep Eli warm, and their progression from there.

It's a cute and sweet story. A family that doesn't care that they're stepbrothers. It's always an iffy trope for me. But I like how this one was done. Absolutely adored them.

Ahh, to be young and misunderstood. Well, not exactly. Eli’s mom and Nathan’s dad have gotten married and blended their families. As an only child, Nathan was excited to have siblings, especially a stepbrother in Eli. He thought they could be friends, besties maybe. His mom died, and both he and his dad have struggled since. “It doesn’t help that we’re not as close as we used to be, when Mom was still alive. Dad’s grief had sent him running, both mentally and physically.” Nathan’s dad isn’t a bad person, just was grieving so hard. But now he’s happily remarried, and Nathan can have a new family. Except the stepbrother he’s always wanted started to hate him as soon as they moved in. Eli was also excited to have a stepbrother, but then he overheard something (this is where it’s really not a misunderstanding but sort of is), and that was it for him. He thinks Nathan is fake, and “…my default coping mechanism is to just ignore the man entirely.”
For his part, Nathan is confused. “I don’t get it. What did I do to make him hate me so much? I can’t remember offending him in any way.” Sometimes I call BS on that, but in this case I think it was true. He doesn’t remember it because it was a case of initial reaction (which Eli witnessed) and aftermath (which Eli didn’t).
Either way, the family is spending the holidays at a cabin and Nathan is Eli’s ride, even thought he absolutely does not want to be. They spend part of the drive with Nathan trying to have a conversation, while Eli glares and grunts. And hugging the pillow he stole from his parents’ house. I thought the siblings' pillow thievery was so cute! Nathan unexpectedly takes a detour, which makes Eli furious, and even more so when they blow a tire, have no spare, and can’t get a tow truck. So they are stuck walking to Nathan’s uncle’s cabin (the detour), a mile in the snow, and Eli is not happy. He is worse when he realizes they can’t get out of there, and takes off. He ends up nearly with hypothermia and Nathan has to take care of him.
The reason for the detour was a sweet one and they end up talking about Nathan’s mom. “She believed the world is a better place if you treat everyone with kindness and respect.” That starts the conversation about why Eli hates Nathan. “He sounds heartbroken, so small, and I’m the one who caused it.” And now Nathan understands and thinks of how disappointed his mom would be. It really was a heartbreaking moment for both of them.
This one is all on me, but I was irritated at how many times someone in here smirked. 24 if we are counting. I know it’s one of those “only me” things, but every time the word came across, I found myself rolling my eyes. Smirking is not cute; it just comes across as annoying (to me!).
They end up back at the family’s cabin (and the pillow comes up again and I loved that). I laughed when Eli sees Nathan naked. “I don’t know how he doesn’t have back problems carrying that anaconda between his legs every day.” They start kissing (and a bit more) in secret during this vacation and you just know something is going to happen. There are some difficulties, especially that Nathan is straight.
The family members are lovely, especially Eli’s sister, Ava. She is so supportive and isn’t buying it when Eli tries to pretend he’s not getting along with Nathan. “I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if she told me she actually had mind-reading abilities.” The whole family is strong and solid, as families should be. But how will stepbrothers crushing on each other go over?

This is an entertaining tale with misunderstanding and miscommunication, a long-term grudge, snowed in together, bi-awakening, and a family Christmas gathering, featuring step-brothers Nathan and Eli, two young men with a rocky relationship due to overheard comments which hurt Eli five years ago, comments he cannot forget or forgive. Because of that event, Eli has hated Nathan, uncomfortable around him at family gatherings, reading looks and words through his own lens, regardless of Nathan’s meaning. When Eli needs to ride with Nathan to the family Christmas holiday at a cabin in the woods, he is surly and resentful, not wanting to be stuck in a car with Nathan. Things get worse when they have car trouble during a snowstorm while on a short detour to Nathan’s uncle’s cabin. Stuck overnight, Eli gets himself in some trouble and Nathan ends up taking care of him, confusing Eli and not fitting in with the picture he has held of Nathan for so long. Things between them start to thaw, and once they get to the family cabin, they thaw even more, with Nathan finding he is attracted to Eli in more than a brotherly way, until Eli gives Nathan a kiss, and suddenly there are feelings which get out of hand, leading to late night conversations, cuddles and more. Returning home, Eli and Nathan must decide where the relationship can/will go from here or will it come to a stop. Navigating Nathan’s work schedule and whether to admit to family how the relationship has changed becomes the next hurdle, one which resolves itself in its own way, leading them to a HEA in the future.

The characters are believable and relatable, the situation based on misreading an event with incomplete information is realistic, discovering a side to Nathan that Eli never let himself see, and giving into what has obviously been a long term attraction kept me engaged all the way through. Eli went from grumpy to seeing Nathan in a totally different light, Nathan discovered /realized things about himself he had never considered before, both engaged in communication and learned more about each other, correcting a situation which had gone on far too long, and both found the one that they needed all along. It is a sweet, low-angst read with humor and seriousness, short enough for an entertaining afternoon read.

I read the book while listening to the audiobook at the same time, something I had never done before. It was interesting to have the different voices rather than the ones I would create in my head, taking the story to a different dimension. I also deliberately turned off the audio at times to compare the length of time to read a chapter without the audio versus the length of the chapter with the audio, wondering if one way was faster than another. I found that for me, I read faster without the audio, but got more enjoyment with the various voices with the audio, so I will probably try this method again. However you choose to read the book, it is a sweet story, one I think many readers would like, and a definite yes if you are a Rye Cox fan.

I received an ARC and audiobook from the author and this is my voluntary review.

Holy Fuck Eli's immaturity drove me nuts! He was 21 but acted 16. Nathan better fucking run because he won't change. My brain hurts after this one. Eli hated Nathan because he overheard something, but he didn't stick around long enough to hear the rest. He just ignored and treated Nathan like shit for YEARS over it. Nathan was sweet he took Eli's shit in stride and tried to make things better. I started writing a long review, but I could care less about the book so Ill summarize with bullet points.

SPOILERS:
** Eli is a never been kissed virgin/ Nathan is "straight" but started questioning his sexuality when he met Eli.

**Eli overheard Nathans friends say, " It must be so funny watching your new gay stepbrother circling around you like a puppy,"
He ignored and/or treated Nathan like shit for years after that.

**Nathan tried to explain that he did laugh because he wanted to fit in (new school) but immediately felt bad. He cussed them and kicked them out of his life. Eli noticed they never came around again but didnt put the two situations together.

** Eli fell into a lake after standing in a blizzard for hours wearing sneakers but no hat, gloves or scarf. Nathan ran to his rescue. ***There is no way you would last outside in a blizzard for hours with no protection, fall into the lake and walk back to the cabin.***

**Nathan warmed Eli up and then gave him his first hand job. (Eli fought his help the whole time but graciously accepted the hand job.

** Eli spooning with his older sister, Ava, on the couch watching movies.
(I only like my siblings cuddling when they are going to fuck.)

** After they made it to the family cabin, Nathan noticed Eli hair was wet so he took him to the bathroom and dried it. Eli kissed Nathan after. (first kiss)

** The fool around the rest of the time at the cabin. Nathan NEVER received a handy or blowy while at the cabin. He focused on Elis pleasure.

** Eli continued talking to the dating app guy while fooling around with Nathan. (He got daily goodnight texts)

** After leaving the cabin Nathan was thrown back into his thankless job. He barely had time to eat and sleep but did text Eli the first night that he missed him.

** A few days after they got back Eli was upset, he hadn't heard from Nathan but refused to be the first to text. He hung out with friends and made date plans with app guy. The shitty part was he had been tracking Nathan's location. He knew how many hours he was putting in at work yet still expected Nathan to make the first move.
The only thing that saved Eli was him realizing he was being a shitty person. He canceled the date and went to Nathan.

** There families caught them fooling around and didn't care. They live HEA.

Cringy Quotes/Actions/ thoughts
Eli glared at Nathan 32 times throughout the book.

"Is his hot rod as velvety as the rest of his skin?"

"Ive already seen him and his fucking giant schlong."

Eli squeals when he sees his second sister, Zoe.

I know he's not the evil villain I painted in my head.

I never though having your ear slobbered on would feel good......

A memory surfaces, causing a lightbulb moment. Eli notices, too.

"Shocked that I heard you guys? What did you expect when your friends came over to my house just to talk shit about me?"

I know some aren't a fan of such tropes, but I just love love love misunderstandings. It can be miscommunication, it can be hidden feelings and insecurities. It's the angst then comfort that just has me feeling all the feelings. Pair that with Eli being the grumpy to Nathan's sunshine as well as stepbrothers had me for a doozy!

"Who's the real you?" he asks softly.

...

"I...I don't know," I answer honestly.

It was an easy read, a cute holiday romance that features the good ol' forced proximity because they are snowed in together at Nathan's uncle's cabin. It makes them finally confront eachother about the bad blood they have and why it even exists. Really, it's a one-sided enemies-to-lovers because Eli has this view of Nathan that Nathan has no idea he partially witnessed!

Emotions wash over me, and my eyes sting as I try to blink tears. It's fainter now, but Mom's voice rings in my ears the way it used to when she told me she loved me.

"I know it's not the same, but I'll be the one to shower you with love now. I'm going to make you so happy that you'll never know what hit you," Eli says and pulls me into a hug. He's full on cradling my head to his chest and holding on to it tightly.

I'll iterate that while it is low angst, we get to see the characters grow through the book, reaching for what they want and need in life, struggling with their own insecruities and second guessing. It's their revealed chemistry together filled with snarky/witty banter that has them bouncing off each other. They share first kisses and first times, they become possessive of each other off the bat even when they start the ball rolling into the confusing territory of being stepbrothers but clearing up what had caused them to not ever become friends in the first place.

It's a cozy winter read that had me rooting for them the entire way through.

This book is loosely connected with the author’s Corio Heights series and features stepbrothers, Eli and Nathan.

As the baby of three siblings and coddled by all, Eli was a royal brat even at twenty one and in his senior year of college. Usually that’s a turnoff for me and, if I’m honest, I guess it was a little here too in the beginning but it wasn’t long before I was too wrapped up in the back and forth between Eli and his stepbrother Nathan who he claimed to despise.

I’ve loved every book so far in the Corio Heights series and this one is no exception. The reason for that is because of our two MCs. If I had to describe Eli, I think I’d have to say he reminds me of a chihuahua, cute as a button but all snappy and snarly except without what it takes to really back it up. Nathan, on the other hand, is this big hulking former high school (maybe college too, it wasn’t really clear) football player, with the ability to toss Eli around all over the place if he wanted (and believe me, he wanted) but was actually a teddy bear at heart. And the more Eli snapped and snarled at him, the sweeter and more patient Nathan became—acting like he thought Eli was just so adorable.

I didn’t quite think Eli was all that adorable but I did love him and think the story wouldn’t have been near as good without him. Nathan though, he was my favorite. A little insecure, maybe, after moving from place to place so often as a child, he wanted nothing more than to be liked and to fit in but he was also genuinely nice and kind… not to mention he had all those gorgeous muscles.

This was a one-sided enemies to lovers romance but still, it was pretty much angst and drama free which I particularly loved. It had a pretty good bit of heat (though Eli was NOT happy about being betrayed by his own body!) and so much sweetness I promise you’ll catch yourself awww-ing by the end of the book. Although it occurred around the Christmas holidays, it’s not really a Christmas book so I think anyone would enjoy it, whether or not you celebrate so I hope you’ll check it out. Personally, I thought it was an awesome read. 4.5 stars

Stepbrothers Fall In Love, it's complicated

Eli Madison lost his father during his childhood, while Nathan Bailey was deprived of his mother. Subsequently, the remaining spouses entered into marriage, thereby uniting their families.

Nathan Bailey is considered strikingly handsome and exudes the aura of a former athlete. Eli Madison is slender, petite, and shorter than Nathan. Both individuals hoped to establish a positive stepbrother relationship; however, Eli overheard Nathan’s friends disparaging him, and Nathan failed to defend him. Consequently, Nathan became the subject of animosity for allowing such remarks to persist. Their relationship has become strained, yet Nathan remains unaware of the underlying reasons.

Nathan is tasked with driving Eli to the location where the fractured family will convene for Christmas. During a snowstorm, they become stranded in a cabin owned by a relative of Nathan. It is in this remote setting that the true nature of their relationship is revealed. Nathan, having previously rejected his friends who insulted Eli, did not disclose this to Eli until they were in the isolated cabin. Eli, feeling upset, isolates himself, only to be found by Nathan soaked from falling into a nearly frozen lake.

Eventually, the two converse and seek reconciliation. To Eli's surprise, Nathan demonstrates a caring and consoling attitude. When Eli exhibits signs of hypothermia, Nathan disrobes and transfers heat through skin-to-skin contact, providing warmth. Nathan's continued concern and care for Eli diminish emotional barriers, fostering a stronger bond between them.

This narrative is engaging and features emotional tension that enhances the story. Author Rye Cox skillfully employs descriptive language to evoke mood efficiently, avoiding unnecessary elaboration and guiding the story toward resolution not merely on the final page but at a pivotal moment when the two characters begin to understand each other.

There is some ambiguity about the appropriateness of a romantic relationship between the two stepbrothers; however, Ms. Cox concludes the narrative on an optimistic note. By the following Christmas, their relationship reaches a joyful resolution, benefiting both individuals.

Well, this was just a cute grumpy-at-you/sunshine story, with a step brothers twist, and I was here for it.

Eli hates Nathan. Nathan doesn't know why. Both really liked the other until whatever happened.

Now we are years down the track, snowed in and nothing to do but talk, and, we, you know.

I loved that the miscommunication is in the past, and we are getting the older, wiser Eli and Nathan, sorting it out. With a lot of snark and banter.

Their family is great, supportive and fun.

This is a fun, quick read to get you into that Christmas spirit.

“Even after four and a half years of knowing him, I can’t figure him out. I probably never will. I just have to accept the fact and move on. But for whatever reason, I can’t. Eli’s dislike of me bothers me more than I want to admit.”

Snowed in with You by Rye Cox is a standalone cosy Christmas read in the universe of Corio Heights. At the beginning I thought it would be another forced-proximity romance with some miscommunication, but Eli and Nathan soon captivated me.

Eli is only grumpy and moody when Nathan’s around. He can’t stand him and acts like he’s got a personal vendetta. Nathan just gets on his nerves, even though he’s somewhat stuck with him because they’re stepbrothers.

The butterflies in my stomach flutter harder, and I attribute it to how irrationally annoyed he makes me.

Nathan, on the other hand, is just this steady, serene, sunny guy who is completely perplexed as to why Eli hates him. He actually likes Eli and has no clue why he’s so cold and distant with him.

“Maybe it’s because I’ve never had anyone hate me so openly. I was lucky to be born with conventional good looks, and that’s already enough to get most people to like you. Being athletic helps too…. I think it’s part of the reason Eli’s distaste for me stings so much. I treat everyone I meet with an open and kind heart, and people are always receptive to it. The only exception being Eli.”

When they end up trapped together in the cabin (because of the snowstorm) everything finally comes out. I really liked how Eli didn’t stay mad and was willing to forgive Nathan. And Nathan doesn’t waste any time owning up to his mistake admitting he messed up and explaining why he did what he did.

“I have no clue why he has such a low opinion of me, but I’m getting tired of being hated on without even knowing why… Eli, whatever you think I did—” “Think? I don’t think anything. I know exactly what you did. A memory surfaces, causing a lightbulb moment. Eli notices, too.”

I liked how Eli gradually lowered his guard and how Nathan quickly embraced his emotions rather than freaking out. They have a nice balance of cute and “ohhh okay, we’re doing this” chemistry.

“Our being there for each other, taking care of one another? I really like the sound of that as well.”

Snowed in with You was a charming and sweet holiday read.

The audiobook is even better with the excellent narration by Zachary Zaba.

I received an eARC from the author for free, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
