Rate this book
Santa's secret turns deadly—who murdered the man in red?

Welcome to North Falls, a postcard-perfect village where the snow glistens, the gossip flows, and the holiday season is in full swing until murder arrives wrapped in a red Christmas scarf.

Elizabeth Evans, a sharp-witted retired schoolteacher and one of four fiercely proud Welsh sisters, is fighting to keep North Falls from being swallowed by greedy developers and luxury condos. With tensions rising in the community, the last thing the village needs is scandal… or murder!

But when the sisters leave the annual Holly Hill Christmas Gala, they stumble upon a body dressed as Santa with Elizabeth’s missing scarf wrapped tightly around his neck. The peaceful holiday village turns into a crime scene. With suspicion falling squarely on Elizabeth, the Morgan sisters (Elizabeth, Beryl, Peg, and Grace) form the Morgan Sisters Sleuthing Club to clear her name and uncover the truth.

A web of deceit begins to unfold, from a suspiciously charming newcomer to a jewelry theft that could shatter the village’s carefully crafted reputation. The Morgan Sisters must unravel a deadly mystery before the holiday cheer is buried under a blanket of lies and murder.

Grab yourself a peppermint hot chocolate and curl up for a twist-filled, edge-of-your-seat cozy mystery, where dark secrets simmer beneath the holiday cheer, and mounting suspicions and dangerous truths lurk beneath the festive surface.

I didn’t expect this book to grab me the way it did—but by the time I reached the last page, I was absolutely in. It’s cozy, yes. Campy, yes. Absolutely full of puns, small-town drama, and colorful characters. But it also has so much heart 🩷

The premise is super cute: a murder mystery set during the Christmas season in a small town village (think: Hallmark cozy mystery meets Knives Out). And while it has all the trappings of a light holiday whodunit, it managed to pull off some truly lovely emotional beats—especially around family, grief, trust, and quiet resilience.

The characters were my favorite part of this book. I was 1,000% invested, and cared about each one of them. Elizabeth and Grace are total MVPs, and the whole ensemble cast—Peg, Finch, Officer Ruff (I love him, and I can never not picture him as an anthropomorphic Bloodhound cop in my head) felt distinct, warm, and fully realized. The dialogue was snappy, the banter delightful, and the story had a strong sense of place. As someone who lives in a small town, the regional feel felt just right. It had just enough flavor without overdoing it.

Now, my only real qualm—and it’s tiny was a moment that could have been a deeper emotional beat between Grace and Finch. Not even in a romantic way necessarily, just trust-building, which would’ve meant a lot given her background. The author chose to keep the plot moving instead of pausing for a moment of character depth, and I get it. But it felt like a little bit of a missed opportunity. That said, I also think she might be saving that depth for a later book, and if that’s the case, I support it.

As for the mystery in question, I didn’t solve it immediately, which I appreciate. The reveal came at just the right time, and once it clicked it all made sense.

This book knows exactly what it is. It’s festive, smart, a little silly, and stronger than you’d expect in its character writing & dialogue. The mystery itself is fun, but it’s the emotional core—the subtle grief arcs, the women supporting each other, the strength of character—that kept me unable to put this one down

I can’t wait to read the next Morgan Sisters Sleuthing Club book!
