Why are the hot guys always straight?

Gus is off men, thanks to his jackass of an ex. He’s put his focus on becoming Boston’s first amputee paramedic and doesn’t care that his new rookie partner wants the same job. Or that the straight, married dad is all wrong for him.

Madoc never imagined having to restart his career. But he’ll do anything to make a better life for his daughter, even if it means reporting to a hotshot who wants the job Madoc deserves. A guy Madoc can’t stop thinking about no matter how hard he tries.

The partners strike up a friendship, supporting each other after Gus is injured and Madoc’s ex-wife abandons the family. But when crushes become real attraction and Gus bonds with Madoc’s child, will Madoc be ready to stop playing it straight?

Why are the hot guys always straight? EMT Gus Dawson is off men, thanks to his jerk of an ex. He’s set his sights on a promotion to paramedic and being the first amputee to hold that title for the city of Boston. Gus doesn’t care that his new rookie partner thinks he’d do the job better. Or that the straight, married dad is all wrong for him.
This is an emotional, slow-burn rivals-to-lovers romance that delivers all the tension, heart, and swoon-worthy moments you could ask for. Gus and Madoc’s journey from wary partners to something deeper is filled with vulnerability, growth, and just the right amount of angst. Their chemistry is undeniable, but it’s the way they support each other—through career struggles, injuries, and the challenges of single parenthood—that makes their love story so compelling.

Madoc’s daughter, Val, is an absolute scene-stealer, bringing warmth and joy to every moment she’s on the page. Watching Gus bond with her while Madoc comes to terms with his feelings is truly heart-melting. The book balances emotional depth with humor, making it impossible to put down.

The only thing that kept this from being *perfect* for me was the resolution of one of the side characters’ arcs—I wanted a little more closure there. But with only 372 pages to work with, it’s understandable that not everything could be fully explored. Still, this book absolutely delivers on its promises of a beautiful journey of self-discovery, found family, and a well-earned happy ever after.

I enjoyed this bi-awakening, rivals-to-lovers romance between two EMTs in Boston.

Gus, a former firefighter who was badly injured on the job and lost part of a leg as a result, is a total sweetheart, and I loved how true to himself he is. His love interest is Madoc, a recent transplant from another station - and almost from the start, they rub each other the wrong way.

Madoc's life is messy; he's divorced and has custody of his precocious, six-year-old daughter, Valerie (who isn't an annoying plot-moppet), and although his ex- is supposed to share some of the parenting duties, she's unreliable and not all that interested in being a mother. Madoc has only ever dated women (he's noticed the occasional guy in the past but his interest has been fleeting and quickly over) - but his interest in Gus doesn't go away.

Madoc can be difficult to like at times, especially when he says or does something that hurts Gus, but I understood his need to take time to sort out what he wants, especially as he doesn't have only himself to consider. He screws up and makes mistakes - but he does admit to them and work to make amends. Overall, the romance is nicely done with lots of moments of cute domesticity and plenty of steam, and even though I wanted to slap Madoc a couple of times, I liked him and Gus and was rooting for them to get together. Recommended.

RECENSIONE A CURA DI BARBARA
Delicatamente toccante!

Overall Color You In was a super sweet, and I loved Gus’s character to pieces. Madoc though… Dude made it really hard to like him, and while I wasn’t completely sold on his character, I’m happy that he and Gus got their HEA.

3.5 stars rounded up for GUS only

One big plus is that this was well written. I was so invested that I had some pretty big opinions about the characters 😆

Color You In by K. Evan Coles is book 2 in the EMS Station 1 series. I had to read this one after I finished Hooked on You because I wasn’t ready to let these characters go. I ADORED Gus. He was such a fascinating character. He was kind, compassionate, funny, and sarcastic and had overcome so much. He deserved the world. He deserved better than Madoc. Madoc is a straight recent transfer to the station who is paired with Gus. Madoc is a single father who has a chip on his shoulder. The way he spoke to Gus crossed the line so many times.

********Spoilers******* Don’t read below if you don’t want to know specifics

The reasons that I dislike Madoc:

1. He treats Gus poorly (for having a prostethic (at the beginning- he does get better about this), for going to school, for being his supervisor even though he doesn’t have as much experience). Madoc was ALWAYS saying shit and then afterwards being like “I know I didn’t mean it. Wish I could take it back.” 🙄

2. He uses Gus to care for Val and sex. Gus agreed but obviously he had feelings for Val and Madoc. Of course he would agree. It disgusted me when Madoc said he could come to Gus’s for sexy times when M said he didn’t want Gus coming around Val for a little bit. Still wanted to get his orgasm but heaven forbid Gus feel like a part of the family.

3. He doesn’t defend Gus when Tarek calls him a f*g and says Gus just wants to get in Madoc’s pants. Tarek is a whole piece of work but this list is about Madoc 😆

4. He accuses Gus of using Val against Tarek (SOOOOOO egregious). Gus was in Val’s corner always.

5. He blames Gus for wanting distance when Gus tells him that casual is not working for him. Madoc is concerned that he’s losing his friend and Gus was like just “give me time”. Madoc was more concerned that he was losing his friend rather than Gus was hurting.

6. The fact that Gus apologized for needing space. I absolutely despise when the person who is in the right is the one doing the apologizing. I understand that Gus is kind and cares about them, but he should not be the one apologizing for the clusterfuck that Madoc created.

7. Oh I forgot one!!! When Madoc accused Gus of accepting the promotion so that could screw around….. I’m like “What?” Gus earned that double promotion and M made it all about himself.

As previously stated, Madoc did not deserve Gus.

I received an ARC from GRR for my honest review

Leggendo capirete a cosa mi riferisco.

Per me 4,5 stelle.

Review of advance copy received from Autore
January 19, 2026
Cit. Bellissimo. «Sembra fantastico. Dove siete andati oggi?» «A giocare a golf.» fine cit.

Leggetelo!

First of all, 1000 massive love hearts for Gus. I ADORE YOU, GUS! I love a disabled MC, and Gus's reality as an amputee with a prosthetic is definitely a PART of him and his story, while not being the whole or even the main focus of the story. Normalize disabled main characters! WOO! I also really love the way K. Evan Coles deals with various characters' reactions to Gus, and how he handles them. There's some gentle education in this book for readers who may not have familiarity with folks who use mobility devices, and I am here for it.

This book suffers from some really uneven pacing. For example, Madoc will be at work and thinking about how much he misses Val, and then the very next second he's at home making her breakfast. No transition, not even a new paragraph. Just "Madoc pulled on his jacket to start his shift, thinking about Val's first day of school and how he hoped she was having fun. He poured Lucky Charms into a blue bowl Val liked as she rubbed her eyes sleepily." No, that's not a direct quote from the book, but it IS an example of how abrupt some of the complete lack of transitions are. And it wasn't just one or two times - the time jumps and sudden scene shifts happen often enough that it repeatedly pulled me out of the story and had me flipping back to see if I'd somehow missed something. It was disruptive enough that it took an entire star's rating off what would have otherwise been a 4.5 or 5 star book, which makes me so sad! Just really needed one more pass by a good editor I think.

Now that the icky stuff is out of the way - I adored this book. I'm not big on the single dad trope and don't usually like kids in my escapism (I have two kids, if I wanted someone to ask me a billion questions about whether grasshoppers eat grass, I'd put the book down haha). But I really fell for Val (though I'll admit, Madoc took me a bit to warm up to, he blows to hot and cold), and her relationship with her daddy and with Gus. Then the relationship (situationship?) with Gus and Madoc was just... great. Gus is amazing, and so patient and wise and kind and and and... <3 Gus <3 I laughed, I cried, and when the book ended I was sad to leave the world of EMS Station 1. You can bet I'll be back for book 3!

This is the second book in the EMS Station 1 series, and can be read as a standalone.

Buona lettura!

Color You In
EMS Station 1, Book 2
By: K. Evan Coles
Narrated by: Kevin Earlywine

K. Evan Coles pens another fabulous novel, a rivals-to-lovers MM romance, set in her wonderful “EMS Station 1” series. This second book in the series is Gus Dawson and Madoc Walters’ story, a story that stands on its own and, like the first book, it captivates your attention and tugs at your heartstrings the entire time. Gus, a former firefighter who lost his leg during a call, never gave up on himself, redirecting his passion for fighting fires and saving people to become a paramedic. Madoc Walters is restarting his career and is the rookie EMT at Station 1, working with Gus, who will watch over him. Madoc makes it known he knows what he is doing and his goal is to become a paramedic, the same job Gus is aiming for. Instant rivals, they do not hit it off well on their first days, but as time goes on, they become friends, a friendship that turns into something so much more. Madoc is a single dad of a wonderful little girl, Valerie, a scene stealer and a stealer of hearts, because she not only stole Gus’ heart but she stole mine too. Both these guys have relationship woes in their past, with Madoc’s more current and complicated relationship with his ex, Val’s mother, who has issues dealing with her own demons. Gus is a complete sweetheart and probably the best thing that happened to Madoc, though it took him a while to figure it all out. This wonderfully written story has multiple layers, great plotting with a perfect balance of drama, angst, heartwarming moments, heartfelt emotions and a slow burn, but worth the wait romance. The world building, character growth and development are fantastic too. K. Evan Coles, thank you for another wonderful story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 Another fabulous listen performed by Kevin Earlywine, who did a wonderful job bringing these characters to life, giving each a voice that was fitting and believable. His portrayal of the characters was spot-on, grasping each of their personalities completely, from the two leads, Gus and Madoc, to the adorable Valerie, perfecting each role. He set the ideal tone for the story, and his expressive performance conveyed all the characters’ emotions, making you feel them all. Earlywine is an entertaining storytellers and his enthralling performance not only hooks you to the story, but it takes the story to another level.

“Don't think twice about what this means…It's just a fantasy spinning like rotisserie
When we first caught eyes … You were a canvas standing in front of me. I wanna color you in. I wanna fill up the empty spaces…” ~ Yam Hous ‘Color You In’

Gus Dawson, a character from 'Color You In' by K. Evan Coles, was once a top firefighter in Boston. However, a tragic accident that cost him his left foot and part of his leg not only forced him to switch to a new role as an EMT but also affected his self-confidence. His new partner, Madoc Walters, initially presents a challenge. His abrasive and unprofessional attitude perplexes Gus, who is unsure how to handle the situation. Despite this, Gus takes the high road, giving Madoc some leeway. Their first call interrupts any chance to resolve the tension between them.

As Gus observes Madoc's skills in action, his perception of his partner profoundly changes. The initial disdain is replaced by a growing respect for Madoc's abilities. However, the issues between the supervisor and the rookie still linger. A serious discussion ensues, during which Madoc assures Gus that his insubordination will not hinder his performance.

After resolving their seniority issues, Gus and Madoc form a close bond, sharing intimate details of their lives and families. Madoc reveals that he and his daughter, Val, moved there after her mother, now his ex-wife, lost custody. She and her brother moved to Boston, too, and live in an apartment above. Despite his attraction to Madoc, Gus knows the risks of falling for a straight man. Madoc, who has always thought of himself as straight, is confused about his strong reaction to Gus.

One of the most crucial aspects of life is staying true to yourself. If you are not, it's time to act and make a change. Be authentic brings a more meaningful life. Gus embodies that spirit; Madoc had to learn it. Thanks, K. Evan Coles, for a thoughtful tale of two men who overcame many obstacles and, finally, learned to make the best of their lives together.

Buon viaggio ❤️

This is book 2 in the series but can be read as a standalone. I enjoyed this book alot more than book 1. I listened to it in one listen and it kept my interest from start to finish. It did not drag at all. It was a light low-med angst, low steam read with a lot of family drama.

I loved both of the MCs. I also loved the little girl. Kids can sometimes ruin the plot but this girl made everything even more enjoyable. The story was well written and was both sensitive and real when it came to Gus disability. There are slurs thrown out by random people but that is real life. As a double Amputee myself I know all about it. I really enjoyed the world the author created and although I hated one side character, in the end I even came to want to hear more about his back story so I would read his book if he gets one.

The couple had great chemisty. I love how they instantly clicked as friends and built a friendship first. It was a nice realistic relationship development and connection. There isn't sparks but I loved their slow built bond even more than instant sparks.

For me the narration was just ok. He sounded younger than the MCs. His voice was pleasant enough to listen to. He expressed all the emotions well and he gave the female side characters a noticeable lighter tone but I really couldn't tell the difference between the 2 MCs voices and that got confusing at times. I've heard way worse though so he gets an average rating from me.

Lovely single dad story (an audio review)

I enjoyed the first EMS Station 1 audiobook so I was happy to grab this second one.

Madoc is having a rough time. He’s moved to Boston from Seattle – essentially starting over - to make a better life for his daughter. He’s balancing a turbulent home life with a very challenging job. His ex-wife is unreliable and his ex-brother-in-law is helpful but not always around. Madoc is struggling to get a handle on everything even as he takes on a new boss who is angling for the same promotion he is.

Oh, and the guy’s damn attractive. Madoc’s never been with a man before, but he’s noticed them. Now Gus has his full attention.

Gus ribs Madoc, but does respect him. However his job is to ensure the ‘rookie’ is up to snuff. Even though Madoc clearly is. Gus’s life-altering injury a few years ago had him changing careers midstream, but he’s settled into EMT nicely. But he wants a paramedic spot on P1. His biggest competition? Madoc.

Then Gus gets injured on the job, Madoc needs help with his daughter and all of a sudden, the men are spending a lot of time together. A damn lot.

The inevitable happens.

But then life complicates things. Things get said. Feelings get hurt. Madoc isn’t willing to come out of the closet and Gus only sees heartache in his future.

Things looked a little bleak.

But that wasn’t the end of the story, of course. Throw in some well-meaning parents, a brother-in-law who sees the light of day, and a matchmaking six-year-old and maybe a happy ending might just happen for Gus and Madoc.

Okay. Lovely story. A little angsty at times, but that worked. Valerie truly stole the show and hats of to K. Evan for writing such a great family dynamic. Also, well done to Kevin Earlywine for his fantastic narration. He’s always a pleasure to listen to. Can’t wait for the next book!

COLOUR YOU IN is the second book in the EMS Station 1 series and it can be read as a standalone. This one features Gus and Madoc. Gus is an amputee with a prosthetic, working hard and studying to better himself and become a paramedic. Madoc is a single dad who has experience as an EMT but is also a 'rookie' under Gus' supervision.

Gus was such a brilliant character and I loved him. That simple. Madoc? Well, he was harder to love. He has good qualities, don't get me wrong, but he is also rather selfish. In the first instance, he sees things in a very black-and-white manner, usually with his mouth opening before he's taken the time to think it through. Their relationship moves quickly from co-workers, to friends, to FWB, and I didn't feel as though Madoc appreciated any of it in the way he should have.

It was good to see Connor and Judah again, even if they were only mentioned briefly. Tarek, nah, I'm good. I didn't feel for him AT ALL and, honestly, wanted to skip over the parts he was in. I'm sure his redemption will be in a future book, but I disliked him so much, I don't know if I could bring myself to read it!

One thing I would have liked to see was a description of the different codes used. I did a search just to confirm what I thought Code 4 actually meant.

Well-written and nicely paced, this was a good addition to the series. If you want a bi-awakening with angst, then this just might be the one for you.

Despite the great audiobook narration, unfortunately this story lacked the charm and proper romance vibes of book one.

*I received an ALC copy of this book, all opinions are my own*

I really liked Gus as a character but wow he really deserved better! He’s been constantly treated like crap by ex-partners & recently gone thru a traumatic financial abuse experience (which annoyingly is not resolved at all during the story). And instead of getting a love interest who worships the ground he walks on, he instead gets Madoc who treats him like a free babysitter & convenient body to hookup with.

Madoc is given SO MANY chances to demonstrate that he cares about Gus, including a time when his ex-brother in law (who is in the closet and I presume will be the focus of the next book) calls Gus the F-slur and Madoc does absolutely nothing about it. This scene had me very close to DNF-ing the book because for me throwing slurs around is a sign of lazy writing & an author that can’t come up with any other conflict for the story. But this story already had a ton of external sources of conflict and it completely was not necessary to include this one.

I kept listening to see if Madoc did a good grovel and it was pretty mediocre. And I ended the book still feeling like Madoc just wanted Gus around to have a second parent for his daughter, and not because he actually loved him.

The story is well-written, and the dialogue is believable. Gus is such a believable character. He's a gay firefighter amputee who's out, proud, and accepted by his fellow Boston firefighters. Madoc is his latest partner who he butts heads with from their first meeting. There is just something closed off about Madoc. Madoc has the most charming daughter, Valerie, who whenever she makes an appearance just steals the show. For a 6YOA she has the maturity way beyond other kids. Madoc has a difficult time being a single father as his ex-wife Noelene, just doesn't accept motherhood over her job. She is the selfish one. Gus and Madoc gravitate from co-workers to FWB to committed lovers. There is strife aplenty contained; especially as Madoc seems to be just taking advantage of Gus but it's Gus who shows Madoc's leaning from straight to bi-sexual to total gay results in a satisfying commitment to each other, their shared life with Val, and their dual much earned jobs with the BFD. An air of authenticity about this story was the use of real terminology in the radio dispatches. This story was a pleasure for this reader and, thus, this review is honest and voluntary for the ARC I received.

Madoc and Gus are perfect for each other. Even as friends first, they just complement each other.

Madoc just transferred from another station and so he is considered probationary but his experience says otherwise. And although he feels a little bad being considered as one, he has to keep it in because it is a process that he needs to accept. He is lucky though because his partner is Gus Dawson who is experienced and is kind and generous in his interactions with Madoc and the patients that they encounter.

Gus and Madoc are both aiming to be promoted to the same position and both are qualified except for the fact that Madoc just transferred. When Gus got hurt in one of their calls, he was forced to lay low and just do desk duties while recuperating. And when Madoc got in a bind when his wife left, he had nobody to ask a favor from but Gus, to help him with his daughter.

What started as a friendship turned into something more the more time they spent together, and who wouldn't love Val, Madoc's daughter, she is smart and just full of life.

I have read both books and they are both beautiful. Thank you Ms. K. Evan Coles and Congratulations!

A presto 😘

There is so much going on in this story. Gus has something to prove, as much to himself as to the outer world. He wants to be the best despite his physical challenges and he works hard to get where he wants to be. Madoc has a lot of responsibility to his family, his daughter Val in particular and he is starting over. Both men are dealing with career related stress and although Madoc is the rookie, they begin a rivalry as each believes he should get the promotion that is on offer. Working together helps them to begin developing a friendship that finds itself on a slippery slope that deepens as they share and become vulnerable with one another. They both grow during the course of the slow burn that ends in their actual romance and it was so neat that along the way Gus and Val, Madoc's daughter, bond. This is a bi-awakening for Madoc so he needs time to sort out how he feels. The author infuses so much good emotion, growth, friendship and then love into this story. Nicely done.
I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.

3.5 stars rounded up for Cus's presentation and the authentic EMT-related content.

Gus Dawson and Madoc Walters are a really unexpected pairing, especially given all of Madoc's hangups and struggles with speaking-without-thinking syndrome. I found Madoc a bit much, really, quite unlikable too often, and generally more difficult to accept as a good match for Gus. Still, they worked well together with Madoc's daughter and Gus's cat providing much of the common ground and consequent glue to keep them working at their relationship. Madoc's character arc is significantly greater than Gus's, and I appreciate the author making the effort to diversify her characters and not make them cookie-cutter people. And above all, aside from the realness of the job-related content, I absolutely loved the way the author presents Gus as a differently-abled person, rather than as someone with a 'disability. That he's also a talented artist further disproves the title of 'disabled' for him and I'm here for that.

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

Kevin Earlywine did a great job performing this audiobook! The story is sweet with a bit of angst but I loved it. Gus has had some hard knocks from life lately – related to his job and also his personal life – but he’s adjusted to his new normal. What he hasn’t really gotten over is the way his ex-boyfriend did him dirty.

Madoc is a single dad who loves his daughter more than anything. He clashes with Gus when he is assigned to work under Gus’s supervision. He’s an experienced EMT but he’s having to start over as a rookie after relocating.

This story sucked me in so hard! I started listening to it later in the evening than I should have and ended up staying up way too late (early? LOL) to finish listening to it. Gus and Madoc have more than a few bumps before they get their HEA but I loved every minute of their story.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

Audiobook is narrated by Kevin Earlywine and he gave a solid performance, if not my fave, of bringing out emotion and the personalities of the mcs.

Overall this is a sweet story about 2 EMTs who meet together through work. Madoc is a single dad and Gus is his supervisor and also a former firefighter who lost his leg in a fire. I very much enjoyed the incorporation of Gus being an amputee into the manuscript without making it all he was, if that makes sense. It's just part of his character but msot definitely not all who he is. Gus is such a wonderful MC! I love how well he took to Valley Girl (Valerie, Madoc's daughter) - single dad is one of my least fave tropes, but I really enjoyed it in this book. I also enjoyed how Madoc and Gus started coming together, first as friends after being rivals, then slowly as a little family with the three of them.

I loved that Gus and Madoc got their HEA after some issues. I do think this book was a little slow in parts and had some pacing issues as well. However, it's definitely worth listening to this good story!

🎧 Audiobook Review 🎧
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Performance: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️️
Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️️

This is the second volume in the EMS Station 1 series, which can also be read as a standalone novel. The writing style is wonderful, and I was quickly drawn into the story.
Despite his amputation, Gus Dawson is determined to achieve his professional goals, and he is ambitious. His rookie partner, Madoc Walters, is starting over so that his daughter Val can have a better life.
The characters are authentic, and both are struggling with problems that life has thrown at them. The beginning of their working relationship is conflict-ridden, but gradually a friendship develops between the two. And the attraction grows, as do the very complicated emotions.
The story is a enemies-to-friends-to-lovers tale with ups and downs and a Val who steals the show. The story has a lot of heart, but self-discovery is also a theme.
Kevin Earlywines brought the story to life with his performance. He captures the emotions well and portrayed the protagonists well.

I enjoyed the first book in this series, I especially appreciated the Station setting and generally like first responder romances. Like the first book, the quality of the writing really stands out, including well crafted dialogue. I also appreciate the characters are layered, even if they are also frustrating or unlikable at times. I loved Gus, Madoc was a challenge though for me. Especially when he is more concerned about hurting Tarek than Gus. For me, this was a lot of kid focus, which I don’t care for in my romance reads. The plot also includes ex wife drama and intrusive family/friends, which also are devices I don’t personally enjoy. The writing is genuinely excellent though, so if you like a slower moving relationship with a lot of kid time and obtrusive family members- this could a good option. Rounding up for the skillful writing.

Audio update: Kevin Earylwine makes a three star read for me an overall four star listen. Even with his beautiful work I still cannot completely get over some of the hang ups that I did have while reading vs listening to the story. Kevin knocked it out of the park with his way of storytelling making it an enjoyable listen.

Gus is one of those characters that you cannot help but root from the getgo. Now Maddoc takes a while to warm up to, his daughter is a scene stealer each and every dang time, loved her! This is one of those romances that felt real, and you could see the events occurring outside of the book world. Even though Maddoc does mess up multiple times, you feel his sincerity when he makes his amends to get back into the good graces of Gus. Gus has his hesitance and oh boy do you get it, he has had a rough go at it but still shows his strength of character in every day and you keep rooting for him to find his deserved happiness.
