The Pet

Rate this book
Young William Hunter, only hours away from turning 13, never thought he’d live to see the day. For as long as he can remember he’s wanted a pet to love and call his own, but until recently his parents felt he was simply too irresponsible to meet the complex challenges of pet
ownership. But things have changed and Willy gets his hearts desire. Is it a nightmare or the realization of his fondest wish? Part dog, part cat, part fish, part fowl, the amazing and mysterious creature that enters Willy’s life proves to be at lease a dozen pets rolled into one.

As a bookstore manager, I sometimes break down and read a young reader book so I can recommend something other than King of the Wind (one of the favorites from my youth) to parents and grandparents looking for that special book. Maybe they are trying to get their children and/or grandchildren interested in reading. The Pet, aka TP is the perfect character to accomplish this. What is he exactly? I don't think it's necessary for us to know. He grows on the reader just as he grows on Willy Hunter and their escapades are flat out fun to read. Kids will love this book and if you're an adult who used to fantasize about your very own pet to share adventures with, you'll love it as well.
