Getting a break was a pipe dream, something that Desmond McLaughlin realized in short order. Fate had her favorite squeaky toy, and its name was McLaughlin. But at least he had his girls to support him and the friends he’d made aboard the Fist of Defiance, as well as the relationships that continue to grow, both into friendships and something more.
In addition to looking after his girls, Desmond is now faced with the unexpected addition of a trio of innocent, trusting lives in the form of the three sevrax they rescued during the final raid against a major base of the Heralds of Whispers. His relationship with the quester in charge ensured they were released to him, but what the hell is he supposed to do with pets like these while he’s fighting to recover from his own injuries?
Deciding to make the best of it, Arsenal heads back to a planetary base to ensure Desmond gets the attention he needs, which will give him the best chance at recovery in the wake of the battle against the upper echelons of the Heralds of Whispers. All the while, the universe continues to spin around him, the gears of time grinding away without a care for those caught within their spokes.
How much of a difference can one man make against the horrors that haunt the spaces between stars? No one is sure, but that isn’t going to stop Desmond, nor will it slow down Clan McLaughlin as they loyally follow in his wake.
*** Monster Girls In Space is a Sci-Fi, fantasy, semi-military, men’s romance, progression fantasy about a man becoming a space-wizard amongst a universe full of monster girls (it’s in the title, you should have expected that part). Expect adventure, mischief, magic, fighting, and unconventional relationships in a galaxy that is curious what sort of mischief Humanity will get up to.
For this series, this book was just ok. It's what I call a "setup" book. As in, nothing of note happens in the book except for little tidbits that set things up for future books. All that really happens is the MC plays with this space puppies, and he goes to officer school and graduates. Outside of that, it's a big pile of Slice of Life that didn't entertain.
First off this book doesn’t have as much action as the others in the series and that is perfectly OKAY. The book is still FANTASTIC . Des is recovering after his injury thus the less action oriented. In this book we get more character, world, universe, government and technology development. Even though this book is more slice of life than the others for practical reasons it is by no means boring. We still get some action, more adorableness from the three new bundles of chaos that were adopted last book, and just as much immersive storytelling as all the other books. Very much looking forward to the next few books, and still my favorite series by far.
Well most series I've read that good past 4 or 5 books start to loose something by book 5. They generally fall off in quality or the story starts to either get rushed or drawn out with little substance. In those instances it feel like the author is just adding unnecessary filler to keep the series going but the books get boring. This series though being at book 7 has in my opinion not only maintained but surpassed the level of writing since book 1. This story just keeps getting more interesting there's no unnecessary filler and there's no rush, just a steady and interesting story. My only complaint would be the way this book ended. I can't believe the author cut it off with such a tease. Anyway I'm very much looking forward to book 8. Hopefully it won't be as long a wait as it seemed book 7 was.
Big fan of this series. The best things about these books are the comedy, and this book has some hilarious moments and the interpersonal character relationships, both romantic and non-romantic, which exist in spades in this book. Also the empire building is really good and although there is some in this book it's a little toned down. The funny thing about this particular book is there is no real story. While the MC is recovering the author is able to maintain a fun and entertaining book without a "barely save the world" scenario or long drug out angst fight. Heck there's not even a villain in this book (other than a grumpy professor). There are hints to the future serious arcs but this one is a relaxed fun read. Highly recommended.
A likeable entry in the series, definitely good to have a step back after the last couple of books have been more petal to the metal type of vibe culminating with the ending of the last book. Coming right from the end of this book, looking back, it does give off the feeling of filler imo. It is meaningful progression for the characters and their lives but I was sorta hoping for more but I think that's just me being hungry for what's next in this world that the author has created.
I have loved every moment of reading this entire series and it's mostly the same for his other IPs though with slightly more variance on level of enthusiasm depending upon the series in question! That said, this was definitely the most leisurely stroll of a read I've experienced since book 1. While I know that some will dislike the change of pace I don't mind it, especially since there were at least a couple of stretches where things kicked up a notch or three. My biggest and probably ONLY gripe is "SERIOUSLY Tress, a d4#π CLIFFHANGER?!?!"
Desmond spend the novel between healing and attending OCS (Officer Candidate School) to become an mage adept officer. His guards also obtain further training to improve their versatility and enhance their ability to protect Desmond. Rather low key while giving more insight into the military of the Hegemony. Excellent editing. Love the series.
Another great book in this series. I really liked how this book turned out. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. In this book, it is a beginning of a new arc. It kind of reminds me of the first book in this series. Now he’s an officer with a whole new set of problems and a whole new set of magic he can look into. Spoilers, I wonder what the path of the sage will give him in magic
This was a very nice slowdown in pace from the previous few entries in the series. A good unwind for the clan to refresh and recharge but as soon as things are set up fate rears her head to munch on her favorite squeeky toy. I'd feel bad for him, but he lives to spite fear so I can't wait to see what mess he gets up to when he has to strike down the past of one of his sweet girls with extreme prejudice.
M. Tress paces things more slowly than many other authors in this genre. This is both good and bad. It allows for a slow and realistic build up and slice of life moments that last longer than 1 chapter. Not every book has a big fight scene and a bunch of stuff going wrong. That's ok.
All this to say I like their writing style since it's different and the story is good.
Love the series and only have a couple tiny critiques that aren't big enough to dock points. The first is that it feels like Lila's only truly in this book for a handful of chapters. The second is that some of the quotes at the start of chapters spoil more than I think is intended. An example is a chapter ending with the sevrax's catching a scent and running off and the next chapter starts with the quote being a witness statement saying they called security as soon as they heard gunshots.

Absolutely the best blend of hard and soft science fiction, I have ever read!!! Fantastic characters and world building in this series has died to make it incredibly enjoyable. This book let us get to know the characters better as the individuals they are as well as prepare us for the return to the mystery and conflict of this world! I can't wait for what happens next!!!
Great book, loved that it stayed true to the series even while being a more day in the life book. It had wonderful character development, and seems to be a beautiful installment dedicated to getting the reader ready for a new chapter in the lives of our favorite characters. Can’t wait for the next book as usual!
This series is just good fun. The characters are varied and enjoyable. The main protagonist is always entertaining and the group dynamics lead to many chuckles and chortles. The only frustrating parts of this book is there isn't more of it and the author out in several devious plot hooks that I can't wait to see how they pan out.
I don’t have much to say other than as usual, M.Tress hit it out of the ballpark with his book. This was a much more tame and calm book in the series but still a nice read. It stayed true to the title and now I’m really excited to see what’s next in McLaughlins escapades
Not much going on this volume in turms of action. Setting up some stuff and getting through the officer training however a couple very interesting world building scenes leave a wetted appetite for future books. I do like how the book did the simulator training here also.
Somewhat lacking in the action of the prior releases this novel clearly focuses on developing the characters skills and story background that will likely involve a more action packed or objective driven new release can’t wait for the announcement of the next book and despite the change in style its continued to exceed expectations
I still love this series but this book felt kind of pointless, like one of those montage episodes im shows that everyone hates. Just as it was getting good it ended
It was definitely a much slower pace than any other in the series, so it was kind of like a relaxing read. The pups were a bit too much and every single thing in the story but that’s more of a personal preference thing. greatly look forward to
A great read, the characters are well developed and the world is growing nicely. I am looking forward to seeing many more books in this world. The work is amazing and I just wait for more audio books.in this series
Outstanding tale with characters growing and developing. Plus puppers getting a wriggle into your heart and making you go, aaawwweee. Yes, it has ups and downs and is a good tale. I look forward to seeing where it leads.
Can't wait for 8 this Good change let res cool out. No big bad this one but the sister is going to be trouble. Love this series great character development and can't wait to see the 3 puppies have fun in a rift
Delicious like the ones before this, but enough build up to a cliffhanger that has one anxiously awaiting the next book. Not all prefer a simple slice of life that gives a bit of build up, but this series is worth it.
Honestly I know I keep saying this but loved the book and each one is better than the last.cant wait for the next one to be released so I can read it and complain about having to wait yet again. Haha
Another great book It was good to see him slow down and actually heal some I'm hoping in the next book that he grows more of a spine and starts telling people no Like the The baroness
