In Trump’s Ten Commandments, Yale leadership scholar Jeffrey Sonnenfeld pulls back the curtain on Donald Trump’s rulebook for power—revealing the ten ruthless, repeatable strategies that explain how he conquers chaos, commands loyalty, and bends every arena to his will.
Trump’s Ten Strategic Lessons from the Trump Leadership Toolbox offers a provocative and penetrating look inside the mind of one of history’s most controversial leaders. Written by Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, celebrated Yale leadership scholar and advisor to five U.S. presidents, this book reveals the ten guiding principles—or “commandments”—that define Donald Trump’s decision-making across business, media, and politics.
Drawing from decades of personal interactions with Trump as advisor, critic, and confidant, Sonnenfeld moves beyond gossip and ideology to decode the predictable patterns behind Trump’s seemingly chaotic style. There are critiques and salutes through history of the impact of the imperial presidency but no existing current or past analysis of how such leadership operates until this deep dive into Trump’s toolkit. Sonnenfeld exposes how Trump’s playbook—built on domination, disruption, and relentless self-promotion—breaks every conventional rule of leadership yet often achieves results through sheer force of will.
From the boardroom to the Oval Office, Sonnenfeld distills lessons in power, persuasion, and performance—lessons that illuminate not only Trump’s successes and failures but also timeless truths about human ambition, influence, and control. Whether you admire or abhor him, understanding Trump’s Ten Commandments reveals how he built empires, dismantled institutions, and redefined leadership in his own image.
Part insider analysis, part leadership case study, Trump’s Ten Commandments helps readers grasp how Trump thinks, how he leads, and what his methods teach us—about both the dangers and the undeniable magnetism of power used without restraint.
For anyone seeking to understand America’s most unpredictable leader, this is the definitive guide to Trump’s strategy, psychology, and legacy.
Exceptional work of nonfiction on current events. Bottom line for me is that this consistently Explains Trump's words and actions better than anything else I'm aware of. I may be missing some exceptions to his thesis (excluded from the book), but this makes a strong case that Trump does not need the 25th amendment due to changes in his mentation or cognitive ability. It is ALL him and his style of doing business. The author is a Leadership authority who has had many interactions with Trump (friend and foe), and advised other politicians & business leaders. I only read 1-2 of the business/leadership books he mentioned, and have some Psychology background, but he writes at a level ANYONE could fully understand, without any academic knowledge in either of those fields. I found it a surprising fast read (maybe becuase it was so compelling). While my views, and much of this book, will likely bring negative backlash from MAGA proponents, some of what he presents I consider Positive aspects for Trump. In my opinion, I am very grateful to Trump for the Abraham Accords (paradoxically, a consequence of his 'Divide & Conquer' style, which unfortunately didnt have time to include Saudi Arabia in Trump I), and for freeing the surviving Israeli hostages. The author also describes Trump's impressive personal charm in personal meetings (with caveats for further connection/involvement/employment questions). Trump's expertise in business/leadership/psychology was apparently all 'street-learned' from experience, rather than from formal education or reading, and it's actually impressive how he put it together over many years of business deal experience. I am personally impressed at Trump's cumulative hybrid expertise from Business/Salesmanship, Show Business/Entertainment (yes, Barnum is mentioned), as well as his new Politics adventure. For MAGAphiles, as well as members of the Resistance, this is an incredible guide to HOW TRUMP THINKs. That's the bottom line. A relatively quick read, and it may ALL MAKE SENSE of what Trump has done. I think you can extrapolate to recent events including 'Trump Jesus" (that one didnt stick to the wall), and interactions with Lebanon. More challenging, but it may even enable some prediction of decisions, actions, methods, side-acts to come. I recommend this to everyone (Both sides of the fence) with any interest in current events, politics, America, or the world.
