What just happened?! That ending just put a terrifying pit in my stomach as they all started to pop up, what did Carmine just do and will Selina be able to get away?! People are sleeping on this series, for real. But as we jump into this series we once again focus on Selina’s past. We jump back to this again later in the issue so I am going to talk about all of it here. The issue opens with Selina sneaking into the orphanage/convent where her sister resides. She snuck in to see her and bring her some sweet treats she isn’t allowed to have, she also finds out about their father and how he is currently in the hospital and not doing well. Selina can’t help but look back and reflect on the resentment she had for her sister. How easily she was able to find safety in the convent and fit right in, she resented her for not wanting more…but reflecting on what Selina sees today at the party she understands her sister about more. Maybe she just didn’t want more because she knew when to stop…Selina could never get the hang of that, lol. The second time we dive into Selina’s past we find her slipping into the hospital to see her father and giving some cash to the night nurse to look away. He doesn’t have long left, liver failure and even if they could get a donor the doctor isn’t sure he would survive it. A life of painkillers and booze will do that to you. Once again I love the self reflection Selina has in these moments. This time she can’t help but think about her desire to have a real dad, not a tv version but just a proper person to be there for her. But that’s not what she had, she has a ma who hurt her mom and drank himself away. He could have taken a step to be a better person each and every day…he chose not to. When he saw Selina he didn’t even ask how she was or how Maggie is…instead he asked if she brought anything to drink.

And now we join Selina back in the present day, she has infiltrated the ball where the Palermo pearl will be sold, the last remnant of a nice memory she has of her mother. But at the moment she has discovered she is being followed by a hooded figure with a half white mask. She isn’t sure what they know or if they have found Aldo from last issue but once Selina spots the reporter she sees a chance to stop and talk to him and see what they do. The entire time she is talking to the reporter about the fight ring and fights occurring next to them, she can tell that the person following her has not taken their eyes off of Selina. So in a flash Selina slips into the crowds and away from the eyes of her tail, only to slip right back around and grab her from behind! Selina takes her by surprise and finds a phone on the person, taking it and slipping away into another room where she discovers the only thing on the phone is a file on Selina. But Selina’s tail isn’t giving there, following her into the room and immediately attacking her. But this is Catwoman we are talking about, she immediately shifts the attack and gets the upper hand. The woman trying to attack Selina isn’t talking and once she pulls a blade Selina puts it into the ground and breaks the woman’s ankle. This finally gets her to talk, she just needs the device back or they will do unspeakable things. Selina promises to leave it in a flower pot in a specific room by the end of the night, but first a costume change is in order and now Selina has the outfit she needs to slip right into the auction room undetected. The auction is in full swing, a place where sacred items are secretly sold, or museums sell things that are problematic, or as what’s about to come up…crime lords sell family heirlooms. It’s revealed that Carmine keeps the pearl in a timed safe. He uses the silver pig, with a very specific weight, to open the locked box holding it and it takes at least five seconds for the delay to kick in and open it. The pearl draws a crowd and the opening big starts at 28 million, this is immediately marched by Zervas who raises it to 29 million and wins the bid. The pearl is then brought back to the lock box Selina is currently holding and she is ordered to bring it with them as they process the payment. Selina came prepared, and is currently wearing a necklace with the same weight as the silver pig. She is able to put it on the lockbox and open it while everyone is distracted with the payment details. As the process the details Carmine has a moment where he hesitates and thinks about what he is doing as irreversible…he pushes through anyway, with a thought in the back of his mind telling him this is enough money to disappear and live in peace. As the transfer goes through and completes a woman immediately walks up in an owl nomad with deep black eyes. They are suddenly surrounded by a bunch of other people with white eyes, almost being mind controlled. Selina is attempting to slip through the crowds and out of the event, but she feels the entire vibe shift…something is going wrong and Zervas is too drunk to even notice. Suddenly Selina sees them everywhere, individuals in owl masks blocking all the exits. Zervas goes to open the case and her the pearl, but the. He notices them as well. Suddenly an executioner costumed man walks up to him with a large axe as the main owl announces that Zervas has been measured and found wanting…and the four of owls has sentenced him to die!! WHAT did Carmine just do?! Selina get out!

Very slow and methodical. The party borders on the weird yet understandable. The last few pages were quite intriguing and I am very curious to see where this goes. The flashback sequences continue to be good.
