It was Sunday 13th August, 1961. At 1.11 a.m. the East Berlin radio service interrupted their "Night-time Melodies" for a special announcement:
"The governments of the States of the Warsaw Pact appeal to the parliament and government of the GDR and suggest that they ensure that the subversion against the countries of the Socialist Bloc is effectively barred and that a reliable guard is set up around the whole area of West Berlin." This pretentious declaration could only mean one thing: the sector border was to be closed and West Berlin sealed off.

Using a wealth of fascinating photographs and documents, this book tells the full story of the Berlin Wall; from the first barbed wire barriers in August 1961 to the 3.6 metre "Fourth Generation Wall" and the electronic "High-Tech-Border" planned for the future. It describes the feelings and reactions of the people of East and West Berlin from the day the Wall went up until the events of 9th November 1989, which led to the collapse of what had been the most closely-guarded border in the world.

Boken var intressant och givande. Syftet med boken är i min mening att belysa historien och för att väcka förståelsen till hur konflikter alltid kommer med långsiktiga konsekvenser i efterhand och lämnar sina spår in i vår nutid. Boken är prefekt för att få en liten djupare insikt av den grundläggande faktan av muren vilket är anledningen till varför jag valde att läsa denna bok. Dock måste jag säga att jag personligen har lite svårt att läsa mer "fakta" böcker då jag ofta upplever att det blir för mycket att information att bearbeta på en och samma gång. Trots detta rekommenderar jag starkt denna boken! speciellt för dig som söker efter mer förklaringar om muren och dess påverkan inrikes och globalt. Mycket av den information som ges är information som leder till förståelse vilket i sin tur går att inplantera i andra konflikter och tvister. Vilket är det vackra enligt mig med historia (nämligen att ger en pusselbit till att förstå världen)

En tanke som jag fick av denna bok var vem som bär ansvaret. Vem bör stå till svars för denna brutalitet? Är det poliserna från östa sidan som sköt ner flyende? Är det politikerna? Är det regeringen? Är det politiken som bedrevs? Lagarna?.....

med dessa obesvarade frågor vill jag peka på att vi gärna ser saker i svart och vitt, onda eller goda, Bra eller dåliga....men i verkligheten är det långt ifrån detta, och det är något som boken verkligen visar på tycker jag. Vi är slutgiltigt människor som har en bra förmåga att förstöra men en lika utmärkt förmåga att bygga upp. Kanske just därför blir denna boken så lärorikt för den blir en påminnelse om vår mänskliga sida som är fyllt av våld och skräck men också ödmjukhet och kärlek.

Interesting, but really needed editing.

For those wanting to learn more about the Berlin Wall, this is a terrific place to start. The brevity of the book belies its tremendous scope. The book covers the Wall's overall history but also manages to delve into intriguing details such as the propaganda training of the Border Troops and the ghost stations underneath the Wall. Diagrams show the layout of the Wall--a carefully constructed death zone--as well as high-tech plans for its improvement that were never realized. Two of the most intriguing and important inclusions are the actual documents that ordered the Wall's construction and (somewhat accidentally) its end.

Hagen Koch, who was a longtime Stasi officer and has one of the largest privately-owned archives of Berlin Wall material, provided much of the book's resources. Serious researchers will find the book too brief to contain much depth on any topic, but the average reader should find this to be a resourceful overview both in text and illustrations. Schoolchildren would find this to be one of the best resources for any project on the Berlin Wall.

Interesting short book about the Berlin Wall. Unfortunately there are a number of errors due to either typos or poor translation. Never-the-less, it’s a good introduction to the history of the wall.
The book contains many excellent historical photos, an appendix with a chronology of major events around the construction and destruction of the wall, and a map showing the location of the wall.

Ciao amici lettori!
Oggi porto nuovamente un ulteriore libro sul Muro di Berlino. Perdonatemi ma appena mia laureerò la smetterò😂. Comunque la ricerca continua e in questo libro si approfondisce in modo preciso le varie fasi della costruzione del Muro. Sapevate che si sono susseguite 4 generazioni di Muro? No? Allora questo è il libro giusto per capire di cosa erano fatte e come erano svolte e da chi. Ragazzi in questo libro ci sono immagini suggestive che sembrano farti rivivere il periodo della divisione della città (1961-1989). Il libro segue tutta la vita del Muro, dalla sua nascita avvenuta in piena notte, sino alla sua caduta avvenuta sempre nella notte e realizzata dalla sua stessa popolazione.
