The Breathe Study Journal includes 5 sessions of teaching by Priscilla Shirer with 4 weeks of homework in a reflective, journaling format. One of the greatest challenges among women in our culture is taking time to stop and cease from all the activities and busyness and just breathe. We are in bondage to busyness. We constantly strive to complete the limitless to-do lists that hinder us from experiencing all that God has for us. We miss the moments because we rush ahead to the next thing. By neglecting time for tranquility, serenity, and repose, we limit our Christlikeness and miss out on some of God's greatest gifts. It is time for us to breathe and build margin into our lives for God. In the Old Testament, God instituted principles and laws that would transform the Israelites' mindset. He didn't just want them legally free; He wanted them to be able to walk in the freedom and enjoy it. So God gave them many gifts, including boundaries in which to enjoy those gifts. Sabbath was intended as a gift, and it is still a gift to us today. If you are weary, worn out, and exhausted the concept of Sabbath will change your life.
Priscilla Shirer is a wife and a mom first. But put a Bible in her hand and a message in her heart and you’ll see why thousands flock to her conferences and dive into her Bible study series’ and books each year.
A graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary, Priscilla holds a Master’s degree in Biblical Studies and considers it a privilege to serve believers from every denomination and culture by helping them to know the truths of Scripture intellectually and encouraging them to experience these truths practically by the power of the Holy Spirit.
In addition to Priscilla’s participation in many church and para-church conferences across the globe each year, Going Beyond Ministries hosts AWAKEN – an outreach event in their hometown designed to encourage and mobilize women locally. This free gathering brings together thousands of women from different denominations and backgrounds several times a year in an effort to stir revival.
Going Beyond Ministries also equips believers through books and Bible study resources. Priscilla has authored over a dozen video driven studies for women and teens on a myriad of Biblical characters and topics including Jonah, Gideon, the Exodus, discerning God’s voice, The Armor of God.
Her books include Discerning the Voice of God, God is Able, and two New York Times Bestsellers – The Resolution for Women and Fervent: A Woman’s Battle Plan for Serious, Specific and Strategic Prayer, which was named the 2016 Christian Book of the Year. Her latest offering is a 365-day devotional called Awaken: 90 Days with the God Who Speaks. In 2016, Priscilla ventured into the world of children’s publishing with The Prince Warriors, a fiction 4-book series and accompanying 365-day devotional (Unseen) designed to equip tween boys and girls for victory in spiritual warfare.
Priscilla has been married to Jerry for 20 years. Between studying and writing, she spends most of her time cleaning up after (and trying to satisfy the appetites of) their three growing boys – Jackson, Jerry Jr. and Jude.
When I first started reading this I thought it was too vague and didn't give a lot of clear direction. As I continued, I began to think that my first impression was wrong, and I really came to enjoy that I wasn't babied through this study. I liked how the questions really made me consider my own life through the Truth being shared. It kept me from thinking of all the other people who needed to hear it and made me ask God what transformation would look like in my life. The Truth itself was hard to take in. God wants freedom for me, but do I want it for myself? I so often want to pick my version of freedom... it is always so much less than true freedom. Sabbath Freedom. What a wonderful gift.
What a perfect time in my life to go through this study. Coupled with Grace for the Good Girl - God knew what He was doing, didn't he?
One of my favorite quotes was actually from another book within it by Richard Swenson, Margin/The Overload Syndrome, "God does not depend on human exhaustion to get His work done. God is not so desperate for resources to accomplish His purposes that we have to abandon the raising of our children in order to accommodate Him. God is not so despairing of where to turn next that He has to ask us to go without sleep five nights in a row. CHRONIC overloading is not a spiritual prerequisite for authentic Christianity. Quite the contrary, overloading is often what we do when we forget who God is."
From Shirer, "Living free requires firm resolve to continue walking in it, resisting the attempts of this world and our Enemy to put chains back onto us again." We must be deliberate and intentional.
Read this as a part of a Bible study at church. It completely missed the mark for me. I am a big proponent of Sabbath and all that implies but this book did not line up with my beliefs. Which is OK, I'm not the authority on anything, including Sabbathing.
I disagreed with pretty much everything in the book except for the need for Sabbath. The approach, the biblical passages chosen, the interpretations of those passages, the examples used. None of it worked for me. For example, Shirer uses hoarding as an example of the need for Sabbath, seemingly unaware and insensitive to the fact that hoarding is a serious mental illness that isn't cured with a simple "pick up your room" approach.
I would skip this and move on to one of her other books.
Wow... who knew I was so tired? God did and used this book and study guide to help me to remember that REST is ok and that He is the One who says it is a command.
Remember the Sabbath.
Priscilla gives clear insight and encouragement as well as how to incorporate the Sabbath into our busy lives. MUST READ!! and then put into practice. If we are to be a people of God, we can't be too stressed, busy, tired and sick to be about His business!
Tough to rate this one. As a study on the idea of Sabbath, this was mostly well done and very much what I need at this moment in my life. As a Bible study, I can't say it was Jesus-centered, and it was far more introspection than actually studying Scripture.
Breathe by Priscilla Shirer is the latest online Bible study program in which I participated with Proverbs 31 Ministries. In the past, I've reaped great benefits from 5 Habits of a Woman Who Doesn't Quit by Nicki Koziarz, Unglued by Lysa Terkeurst, Wait and See by Wendy Pope, Listen, Love, Repeat by Karen Ehman, and Seamless by Angie Smith. Prior to reading her book, I'd only heard of Ms. Shirer through her father, who is a paster in the Dallas/Fort Worth area - Tony Evans. The things I had heard about her were very positive, so I was quite excited to dig into this study. And I'm not going to lie, I was happy it was a short one since we are in the midst of the busy holiday season.
The overall premise of Breathe is we are overly busy. We don't slow down and smell the roses. Shirer posits that God designed us and the world in such a way that we must take time to rest and remember - remember our purpose, remember to love, remember to spend time with Him. She calls this the #SabbathMargin - creating space for God to enter in. She further explains, after six days of creating, He saw that it was good and rested on the seventh day. In doing this, He illustrates the importance of us taking that same time. It may be difficult to carve out an entire Saturday or Sunday. But what if we took a few minutes each day to stop and meditate on His goodness?
The book is written in a relatable and practical way for both women and men. There are several areas and pages to jot down notes of your own and from Shirer's video presentations that can be purchased via LifeWay. I wish there was a little more written content and less questions. Some of the questions tended to be repetitive, and some of them were not relevant to me. However, it was helpful to reflect and commit to some Sabbath practices by memorializing them in writing.
My biggest takeaway from this book was that people who tend to hoard (things, time, etc.) live with a slave mentality, and "Slaves live from a position of deficiency. Free people live from a place of holy expectation." After completing this study, I have a renewed commitment to thinking, walking, and living in freedom. Rather than hold on to the temporary things of this world, I hope to hold on to things that contribute to my eternal life. I will not always be perfect, but the goal is to be better. And I hope God blesses my progress (and yours too!).
Recommendation: Priscilla Shirer is a powerful writer and speaker. This short book is packed with motivational messages, and it's the perfect antidote this time of year when we all tend to be more busy than usual.
Regardless of whether I purchase a book, borrow a book, or receive a book in exchange for review, my ultimate goal is to be honest, fair, and constructive. I hope you've found this review helpful.
I elected to go through this study at a much slower pace than I would normally, and it has been incredible. At first, I did not know how I would respond to it, but I can honestly say that it has been one of the best courses of study that I've taken. Certainly, it is one of my favorites. It is unique and different, but oh so relevant.
it was a good topic, well presented and laid out. I would've liked more actual writing and teaching though, and a great deal fewer questions, as they became rather redundant after awhile and caused me to lose interest in studying
I really appreciated both this book and the video sessions I watched while reading it and completing the homework. Priscilla breathed a lot of truth and heart into both the book and the videos. I learned a lot, let go of a lot of things I needed to say no to, and am now repeating the study with a friend. I definitely recommend this, no matter what stage of life you are in. We all need help in learning how to say yes to what is important and no to what may drag us down from God's best. Even good things in life can become a burden or slavery if we allow them to. Priscilla was open, sincere, and passionate, things I greatly admire in a teacher/writer. Definitely recommended.
I know what you are thinking. I am supposed to take a ton of time out to read, journal, and small group about a sabbath, ON MY SABBATH DAY? You probably don't have time to add one more thing. Trust me, this is worth it. This study is so much more than just about a sabbath. It taught me things like, I can't enjoy the gifts God is giving me if I am addicted to them. I learned that I am not responsible for anyone's happiness. I am valuable without things and commitments to doing things. That is not what makes me valuable, God is. This study spoke to me so much. I really loved it. The videos, the small groups, the daily readings, and journaling. I definitely recommend it!
A group at church started this study during the Lenten season this year and watched the matching video. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in this study. I have done other P. Shirer studies that I absolutely loved but this one fell short. Shirer gave many good points to honoring the Sabbath and following that "law". However, the video was a recording at a women's retreat/seminar where she was talking to thousands of people and she was shouting the entire time. This was a big complaint from the group that we all felt like she was yelling at us. Not sure I would recommend this one, but I will continue to do other P. Shirer studies.
I had the great privilege of working through this Bible study book with a group of women in my small group, and what a refreshing read it was! Not only did I benefit from the community of meeting every other week with like-minded local wives, I relished Priscilla’s walking us through the principle of the Sabbath. I’ve actually never done a small, local Bible study with other women before, and I highly recommend the experience. I think Breathe had a lot to do with that.
With a journaling format, Breathe invites us into different Scripture passages with interactive study questions. Something I and the other women often remarked was that we struggled to move forward after one or two questions; they were just too deep not to dwell on for a day! So if you’re looking for a quick read, keep looking. But if, like me, you’re adjusting to a new schedule and therefore struggling to find a consistent time to have a daily quiet time, pick up Breathe and maybe even invite other new wives to walk through it with you. Having a structure helps keep me accountable to that daily time with God; I hope it does the same for you. There’s no better way to invest in our marriage, after all, than realigning our heart with the truths of the gospel.
This book was read for a bible study and so we had discussion once a week on each chapter. The book includes questions to answer in a way that feels like you're journaling. This book is a great reminder to keep yourself from getting too busy. Probes your reasons for keeping yourself busy and challenges you to establish margin in your life in order to live in God's best for you. Priscilla made a connection between the Israelites receiving a daily provision of manna and our daily provision of time to do what God calls us to do. If we try to "overdo" (even very godly, good things) it is like when the Israelites tried to save their manna for the next day instead of trusting God to supply their daily needs. God promised them enough for two days since he commanded they not collect one day a week in order to worship Him. God provides enough and we receive his full blessing when we honor his call to a Sabbath rest.
This series by Priscilla Shirer is amazing! It helped me to see areas in my life where I wasn't making room for Sabbath. It challenged me to stop and consider what was most important in my life. She is a wonderful teacher. I encourage you to purchase the videos online through Lifeway to better enhance the reading of the book. If you are overworked and need a break but feel guilty about doing so - get this book, read it, and ask God for wisdom to learn to rest in Him.
This was my first Priscilla Shirer bible study. While at first i thought it lacked depth I soon realized that nothing concerning God is without reward. Stated in the book, "When we honor God's margins and the boundaries he has instituted, we endorse his authority, express our continued need for him, invite his favor in our lives, and bring honor to his name." When I take a break from my regular pattern of life I can see God.
This study journal was a great primer for the concept of Sabbath for someone who had never really thought about Sabbath. The author forces the participant to realize it is the junk of worldliness that we are slaves to which keeps us from worship and margin. I coupled this study with other books including Sabbath in the Suburbs by M. Dana and Sabbath Keeping by L. Babb.
Really liked the topic of this book and wish it was a longer study. I also thought it would've been nice if the weekly work was broken up by day. Otherwise, Priscilla Shirer is a great speaker and very engaging.
This was a great book. It made me really stop and think, A LOT! It is a book that I will take the principles from and use them for the rest of my life. Priscilla Shirer really has you reflect on the Sabbath in your life. It was really good!
I really loved this, and obviously I picked it up from the local Christian bookstore (along with a few other bible studies) because I was on a HUNT for something that would speak to me as I start my daily bible study routine. And this was the first/second thing I chose. I don't know Shirer well, but I really love her approach, and the accompanying videos were incredibly powerful (from a conference, instead of a studio-set add on). These sessions are more "themed" around certain ideas of the Sabbath than a more traditional, "Here's one week's topic, here are 5 sessions for that week, and they take 10-20 minutes to complete".
Shirer is a really dynamic speaker, and I loved her prompting questions. It was definitely more reflective than strict bible study, but it's for sure biblically based. And what's interesting is that it's a few years old, pre COVID-19, and I feel like it needs an update, because we need it more than ever!
I loved her "14" challenge (take 14 minutes a day for God, and clear 14 inches of space a few times a week) to really give yourself margin. That was a nice concept for me--sabbath as margin. But oh, how we need it! The days when I give myself time to study, meditate, and ease into my day (around 20 minutes) are the days when I feel like I've given myself a gift.
Highly recommended, especially for today's busy women. Can't wait to check out a few more of her books.
I liked the idea of the topic, and I like the speaking she did on the topic. (It was a speech she gave at a conference that was divided up for the video sessions.) However, the homework itself felt repetitive, like she was looking up synonyms for words in order to ask the same 2 or so questions. Also, I appreciate the idea of the Sabbath principle in our daily lives, but I would have appreciated talk of the actual Sabbath day on one of the weeks at least.
In the end it gave me good food for thought and helped me identify areas I am doing well in and others I can work on. Neither the homework or videos seemed to lend itself well to good group discussion; at least not in our group where we normally have lots to discuss and share. Overall it just was not my favorite study of Priscilla's.
I really enjoyed this bible study, it was "refreshing" to say the least. It is a good reminder to take breaks needed and not feel guilty. This bible study came at the perfect time in my life where I was constantly busy, taking care of kids, trying to keep up with house hold chores while maintaining a good workout regimen (what I called time for myself) and not that it's a bad thing, but I have often found myself overburdened, exhausted with everything and this bible study helped me rethink things in my life, prioritze things/chores and helped me slow down, destress and not feel guilty about missing a day at the gym, or having the dishes cleaned right away. It helped me relax more!
I loved this book, which I completed as part of a Proverbs 31 Online Bible study over the holiday at the end of 2018. This book is for anyone who is currently struggling with or has struggled in the hustle and bustle of today’s overwhelmingly hurried schedule, workload, and mindset. I love the way Priscilla Shirer leads you to step back and evaluate where in your life you need more room to breathe. It may not be your schedule, maybe it’s your over stuffed home, closet or mind. This book is thought provoking and steeped in scripture to help you take a moment to stop and deeply inhale. Highly recommend BREATHE!
I enjoyed and learned a lot from this study. I am new to my journey with God (January 2021 new), so a lot of the terminology is still foreign to me. A friend of mine asked me if I wanted to do this study with her and I jumped at the chance! Priscilla Shirer did IG live videos instead of having to pay/rent the older videos that went with the study so that was fun to watch and interact. I had to do a lot of pausing to look things up to make sure I could understand fully as well as leaving a lot of questions blank because, at this stage, I just don't know how to answer them. This is definitely a study I will come back to and do again.
A great biblical view of taking a sabbath, creating space both in your week and your day but also creating space with your stuff.
4 stars instead of 5 because while its a good outline of why we need Sabbath it doesn’t give many suggestions for how to make that happen. I was also looking at this through the lens of mom with small kids and it feels pretty much impossible to get rest when one is home 24/7 with small kids.
Also, while the videos make it more personal, I don’t think they are necessary. The important parts from the video gets repeated in the book anyway so if you have the book and don’t want to buy the video I think you’ll be fine.
I read Breathe in a Bible Study group, and honestly, I felt like the book was repetitive and not fulfilling in any way, for me. I can see how it would be useful for some people, but if you already have an inkling of knowledge about rest, and how to properly manage your time, this book won't be worth the time. We also watched the video teachings that went along with this book, and I found Shirer to be wonderful when she was softly speaking to a camera, but to have a mildly annoying preaching voice. That's just personal preference though, from someone who's sound sensitive.
Nice and quick Bible Studies. This was not an in-depth study compared to other bibles studies done by Shirer, but the title is "breathe" so the relaxation of this study was fitting. There are so many areas in life that could have some margin or breathing space. Too much time in one thing and/or habits can lead to suffocation and exhaustion that leaves little time and energy for the things that matters. We are meant to enjoy life and creating balance and boundaries is the key. I recommend this study for anyone needing a breather.
Priscilla Shirer is amazing and I loved watching the video portion of this study. The book was a wonderful companion to the videos and offered extra reading and plenty of questions to be completed between sessions. I did find myself overwhelmed by the number of questions and I was ultimately unable to complete them before meeting with my group for the next session. This is something I can always go back and do at a later time, but I did feel as though I couldn't keep up with the book.
