The Age of Arthur #1

The Companions

Rate this book
The legends of King Arthur were born in the darkest of ages. After three hundred years of rule, Rome had recalled their legionaries, and ruthless barbarians scoured Britainnia. Three oath-bound young men join forces with a rag tag group of refugees led by an Irish deaconess as they strove to preserve their culture against annihilation. This is the riveting first book of an action-packed historical fiction series set in the Dark Ages, the times when the King Arthur actually lived, a tale of how the Arthurian legends were born.

The themes, events, and characters of the Arthurian legend have been retold for centuries, shifting dramatically from one source to the next, with no single version ever standing as definitive. This book embraces that ambiguity and uses it to its advantage, weaving legend with history to create a grounded and compelling interpretation of the Arthurian world.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of the British Isles in the 5th–6th century A.D., the story brings the post-Roman era vividly to life. Rather than leaning on myth alone, it thoughtfully incorporates what we know of the historical context, politics, and cultural tensions of the time, making the world feel authentic and lived-in. At the center of it all is a young Arturius, not yet the legendary king, but a flawed, determined, and deeply human figure finding his place in a fractured land.

What stands out most is the focus on the becoming of Arthur. This is not a tale of instant greatness, but of hard choices, loyalty, loss, and leadership forged under pressure. The characters feel real, their motivations believable, and their relationships earned. The result is a story that feels less like myth on a pedestal and more like history you can step into.

If you enjoy historical fiction, medieval adventure, or fresh takes on classic legends, this first installment is a strong and engaging entry point. It sets the foundation for an ambitious trilogy and offers a richly imagined answer to the question of what King Arthur’s rise to power might truly have looked like.

Really loved how real the history felt in this. It didn’t feel like a typical Arthur story — more like actually being in Britain after Rome left. Great characters and a really interesting world.

I was never a fan of medieval writings but this book has made me a follower. It is well written with fiction and non-fictional details. Excellent read!!! Can’t wait to dive into the remaining books.
