The period of peace long enjoyed by the realm of Delandaar is nearly at an end. A mysterious assassin works its way into Silverpeak's castle, setting into motion a perilous quest to the Vale - a sanctuary run by the elusive Masters of the Glyphs.
On the far side of the world, an apothecary's apprentice sets off seeking knowledge on the rising shadows plaguing her village. Spurred by dreams of a Shattered Throne, her path takes her to Lakeside, where an ancient evil is roused from slumber.
Fates collide as delicate balances topple and the true source of power reaches from beyond the borders of any known kingdom.
"A fast paced modern fantasy with all the charm of the classics." The Literary Post
Jason Russell is the Editor in Chief of science fiction publishing house Starry Eyed Press and has over twenty novels to his credit including entries set in the Doctor Who, GI Joe and Foreworld Saga universes. He is perhaps best known for his expansive 224-Verse space opera series.
although the story is split into several meandering fantasy tales, i was able to follow all the winding paths through each of the shadowy realms, albeit with my sword ready by my side. Plenty to enjoy here and i'm sure we'll all pick our favourite ensemble team ups within the pages. for me' i found i was drawn to Elara, a very likeable character, on a very intriguing adventure. Go girl- you slay!
A fast and enjoyable read, the story was entertaining and kept me interested and wanting to know more! I highly recommend reading this book and looking forward to the 2nd installment.
Russell and Charly's novel is an absolute delight. "In Shadow Spawned" takes the reader into a fantasy realm through the eyes of several different people and groups, all on separate journeys on the outset, but destined to intersect in unexpected ways.
Some portions reminded me a bit of Star Wars, such as a novice practitioner of a mystic art discovering his order had been betrayed and murdered by one of their own. He is charged by a dying master to pursue their foe, even though he is vastly stronger than the novice.
Several different groups, including an apothecary apprentice and her warrior companion and two mercenaries diverted from their task as assassins find themselves confronting a menace not seen for centuries, a dragon.
But that's only the beginning.
It's an easy read but includes a rich use of language. The narrative is smooth and progressing through the pages almost seamless.
There were just a few editing errors but they're hardly worth mentioning.
I'm giving this one five stars and must say that I am truly impressed.
