His First Deep Snow

Lance wanted to pass - but first he had to prove that Reece was a perfect catch for a gay man. You don’t need a girlfriend to have a good time.

They weren’t the only ones studying. Pressed against the glass, hand on his mouth, Reece wasn’t going to last.

It's your fault… baby boy, 'cause you're the one that sparked this / Shine a light… with your eyes onto me in the darkness (I Didn’t Just Come Here to Dance – Carly Rae Jepsen).

Hey there, it’s been a minute since I’ve read gay pornography and proudly announced that I did to the world (Goodreads). Time to rectify that issue, I guess? Man, what is there to even talk about here? First, let me just get this out of the way and let you know that I hate the term “straight to gay” because it only ever highlights a very ignorant and limited view on sexuality, but don’t worry, I’m not here to preach because this isn’t the kind of book that’s supposed to inspire discussion. Readers of this thing are doing something to the text, and it’s sure as hell not talking to it! Besides, the only thing deep about His First Deep Snow was Lance burying himself in Reece’s guts. Badum tss! Sorry if that was a bit graphic, but hey, being crass and casually disinterested is the only way I can talk honestly about erotica out loud without crumbling into a ball of awkwardness. I remember when I first started reading books with shirtless men on the cover, I was so embarrassed by the content inside that whenever I would review them I wouldn’t even talk about whether or not they were titillating… which is really funny in hindsight because it basically means I was analyzing them with the same kind of distant coolness as a tired scholar. Step aside, I am here to examine the literary merits of the gay porn, this is important work. Really though, the truth is that in my mind, these kinds of books have always operated on a different rating scale than something I genuinely love reading like The Master of Restless Shadows or After Hours at Dooryard Books, and if I’ve ever given a book with a shirtless man on the cover a high rating, then just know it was because I found it sexy above all else. In that regard, I’m sure you’ve already taken notice of my opinion on His First Deep Snow long before I even started talking! So let’s… discuss? Supposed straight guy who watches gay porn Reece (classic straight guy activities) and his best friend/OnlyFans star Lance are hunkering down for an intense study session the day before a dreaded test and decide to sneak into the library after hours to get some extra knowledge poured into their heads. Heh heh... luckily, Reece learns the hard way that Lance gives good brain like he graduated from a good school, if you catch my drift. So yeah, then they have a little competitive jorking match and Lance spends the next few chapters focused on that booty meat and then there’s fucking and sucking. The end.

No but really, I can’t stress enough how much of this book operates on porn logic, and you kind of have to experience it firsthand because otherwise just me talking about it will give you the impression that it’s the biggest pile of shit ever, but it’s actually good, I promise! This is going to sound odd considering, again, how explicit this book is, but I actually really enjoyed the setting and how it takes on this “bottle episode” quality in the way both Lance and Reece (and a few other late night study buddies) are stuck in the library for the entirety of the book. As you probably know already, I’m a big fan of minimalist narratives, and the fact that we get only the barest essentials of Lance and Reece’s personal histories really helped the overall “focus only on the action” vibe that His First Deep Snow was going for. I mean, there’s really only one reason why this book was low on exposition (which I already covered, I reckon), but hey, I can appreciate it nonetheless! It’s similar to when you’re getting bored of the porn you're watching and you start noticing random shit in the background and it’s like, “hey, this room is very tastefully decorated!” Otherwise, I will say that the absence of descriptive language did leave something to be desired every now and then because I kept losing track of where everybody was placed in any given scene. I mean, it’s awkward to say as much considering this entire book is literally one prolonged sex scene, but there were points of confusion where Reece would be kissing Lance while hopping on his Pogo stick one moment and the prose would describe him also turning his head to look back at the dude the next and I’m just sitting here wondering if the dude was built like Mr. Fantastic or something. Neck all doing a full one-eighty like he’s in a fight with Spopovich. Also, I thought it was kind of odd how our resident good guy Lance is supposed to be this liberated and free-spirited gayboy in the way he’s so open about his sex life, but then he also keeps video evidence of all of his sexual exploits as if that weren’t some creepy ass Dennis Reynolds type shit. Look, Reece tries to get ahead of it real quick by letting us know that it’s all consensual “of course.” And it’s like, what do you mean of course? I don’t know this guy, and considering this information is apparently so pertinent to Lance’s personality that it’s literally the first thing we learn about him, I'd say questioning his character is only natural. “143 I la la la love you, 143 I la la la love you!” Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like this is an actual criticism I have towards a book calling itself His First Deep Snow, and I really didn’t mind how little justification there was in the story proper.

There’s nothing problematic here because everybody involved is into everything involved in this book. Does that make any sense? The book trusts the audience enough to understand that His First Deep Snow is a work of fiction that isn't meant to be taken too seriously and isn’t interested in igniting conversation outside of how if you could see it from the front, wait 'til you see it from the back, back, back, back, back. And really, this aspect of the story makes it stand much taller than its peers because it didn’t bother with all the logistics that are important to wrestle with were you in a similar situation in real life. We’re seeing that a lot now, aren’t we? People who criticize shoddy writing and inconsistent logic in a book that obviously only exists for the sole purpose of getting people off. “It doesn’t make sense that Reece would all of a sudden be so submissive,” “It’s problematic that they didn’t have a five hour discussion beforehand discussing what kinks they’re comfortable with” and blah blah blah… sorry, but this just isn’t that kind of story. Fluff it up all you want, but we’re reading gay porn here, a magical place where logic doesn’t have to exist! plot holes? There’s only one hole that matters here, my friend. Maybe two. Two holes. In my opinion, a lot more stories would greatly benefit from being as horny as they clearly want to be. They get so bogged down trying to obtain some underlying wholesomeness that they end up diluting the story that they’re trying to tell. Sorry, but sometimes a filthy imagination goes a long way to making something hot as fuck. There’s this game called Dragon Age: Inquisition with two male love-interests, one is a dainty twink named Dorian and the other is this big hulking man-mountain with his thiddies out who goes by Iron Bull and he’s into tying people up. Sexy, right? Yeah well, his love story is actually really lame because before every sex scene he spends forty minutes explaining the ins-and-outs of fucking fantasy BDSM style in a safe and healthy manner. Like, obviously all of this is incredibly important in real life, but again, this is a fantasy story and having a character whip out an itinerary of rules instead of a real whip totally ruins the mood. But who knows, maybe I just don’t like being designated a bottom by a video game. Anyway, I liked this book, and I liked how it actually felt gay in a way that was actually catered to queer readers… because damn, I’ve read some gay books that were straighter than a Jonas Brothers song! But most importantly, His First Deep Snow was hot and it doesn’t need to get any deeper than that.

“Wouldn’t that ruin everything?”
“I’ll ruin you, yeah.”
“No. I mean. Can we still be friends, after.”

Reece wasn’t about to jeopardize their friendship for a quick fuck. … if he repeated it to himself enough times, he might just believe it.

Ridiculous. Sexy. Short. Delivered exactly what I was expecting. Zero complaints.

“Oh yeah Babe, stroke that cock, show me how badly you want to come.”

“Fuck Reece, please, say yes. Say I can fuck this perfect ass again.”

“Best. Fuck buddy. Ever.”

This one was ok. These guys honestly just seemed very pent up and not a whole lot of romance only spice which is fine but wanted more.
