Curse you, kind old cat smuggler! Drupada quickly finds himself on the wrong side of the law when an outbreak of man-eating space lice in his building would see him quarantined for the rest of his known life. Barely escaping with the help of a polar bear, he finds his evil twin has already spent his life savings on a rickety death-trap she calls a ship. His only hope of reclaiming what he can of his life is a piratical adventure wrought with peril! Buxom space marshals! Accidental kidnapping! Murderous AI! (Technically) Not cannibals! The mysterious existential threat that ended the age of space piracy! Can Drupada pull together the shards of a shattered childhood dream to become a space pirate and maybe, just maybe, get a snog from the girl of his dreams? If the adventure doesn’t kill him first…
I just happened upon this book, and I'm glad that I did. It turned out to be one of those diamonds in the rough, that you hope to, but rarely find randomly.
This is a humorous space opera about a washed-up 30-something desk worker who gets propelled into following his long-lost dream of becoming a space pirate. This is a well-paced action adventure, with plenty of comedy and a little bit of romance thrown in. Space battles, rogue AI, retired space pirates, talking polar bears, primitive alien cannibals that aren't technically cannibals... this book really has it all.
It is fast-paced, and before you know it, you'll be done and hoping (along with me) that there will be a sequel.
The only thing holding this book back is its fairly generic title, which I almost gave it a pass, but thankfully did not, and the confusing pen name of the author. But those are minor issues compared to the wonderful story you'll find within.
I had so much fun following Drupada as his life spins into total chaos across the galaxy. The humor is bold and strange in the best way, mixing danger with laugh out loud moments. Every twist raises the stakes while keeping the tone light and playful. I enjoyed how the story balances absurd situations with real emotion and hope. The cast of characters is unforgettable and adds constant surprises. This book delivers a clever and energetic take on space piracy that kept me smiling to the end.
Poor Drupada is getting the short end of the stick in life. Then they try to kill him thinking he is infested with space lice. It's a good thing his evil twin sister buys a pirate ship for him and his polar bear friend to escape in. This was a funny sci fi adventure with lots of twists and turns.
I loved this book! It was a fun read with everything you need for a great space pirate book, a dashing heroes, technically not cannibals, exciting adventures, and a buxom babe.
