Saving Ella: A Contract Killer, Forbidden Love Romance

Rate this book
He’s a killer.

I’m his target.

I’ve fallen for him, anyway.

My cosy, quiet life has been turned upside down. Two handsome contract killer brothers, one cruel, one kind, have me in their sights and now I’m next to die.

But then one of them falls for me.

Thrust into a world of assassins, lies and betrayal, I’m torn between my feelings for the man meant to kill me and my need to survive.

The question is, what will kill me first—a bullet or heartbreak?

This is a standalone multi-POV romantic suspense contract killer romance with dark, triggering themes. Trigger warnings are listed at the front of the book and on Kayla Kyng’s website. This novel is part of the Luxe Universe and while it’s recommended you read the Denver Trilogy first, it isn’t required to understand the story.

ooh goodness, this book is a rollercoaster of a plot. it started off super funny and then led into a weird plot filler. the ending tied the whole book really nicely. there were times throughout the book, i wanted to dnf. i’m glad i pushed through, because the ending made me happy. i think maybe i would love the plot more if i read the trilogy that is interconnected with this book. overall, a pretty quick read!

thank you to Ever After PR and the author for the digital ARC.

Firstly, a big thank you to the author, Kayla Kyng & Never After PR for an advanced copy of ‘Saving Ella’

‘Saving Ella’ by Kayla Kyng 🥀

Dark romance, touch her and die, assassin x target, love triangle, forced proximity, dual/multi pov, slow burn to high heat.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I smashed this out in a day and struggled to put it down - if this doesn’t sum it up for all of you, then I’m not sure what will!

We meet Ella Gibson an Author who finds herself caught in the middle of an assassination ring thanks to her creepy neighbour, her lucky red pen and her unfortunate amount of sass that has her unable to be aware of her surroundings or who she may be in contact with. But what happens when she comes across the Flynn brothers who are trained assassins, what happens when one brother spends plenty of time with Ella while the other continues to despise her, and what happens when a bounty is placed on Ella’s head? Whose feelings will flare, who will get hurt and what ultimately will be the biggest price to pay?

I really loved this book. I laughed, I chewed my nails for a bit, I felt sad, I felt happy, I felt a little lost at some point because the book did NOT go where I thought it was heading which I am almost glad about! I loved the little twists in between and overall, I fucking loved Ella as an FMC! She is one bad ass bitch. I loved everyone in the story (apart from a couple, but if you read then you’ll know what I’m meaning 😉)

This was my first Kayla Kyng novel (and certainly not my last) and I was not disappointed at all. I felt there was character depth, I loved the back stories, although it was a little predictable towards the end I still absolutely ATE it up, I loved the character development, I loved the love, the spice and the drama.

If you are wanting an easy, quick paced and fun read then I highly suggest getting your butts over to KU and downloading this YESTERDAY.

Happy release weekend, Kayla. You should be so very proud of yourself and you have personally gained me as a BIG fan! ❣️

i like how she's not a doormat and doesn't do what gable tells her and has to challenge him every single time. it was cute that we get to hear her inner voice "todd"

⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧• gable flynn
he's so grumpy and broody in the beginning and literally HATING on ella was so funny. i literally LIVE for their back and forth arguing. and then the way he protects her even though he hates her?! screaming—

⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧• asher flynn
ughh he's such a sweeet guy, and the fact it HAD TO HAPPEN TO HIM, what the fuck??! i cried so much loll

⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧• monty

Rcvd an ARC from the author.

This book had me going thru all the emotions....laughing out loud to yelling to crying to sweating.

we meet author Ella, who is currently writing her next great book and living in her besties apt, when her lucky pen decides it needed a plot twist and land on the balcony below. we then meet Asher and Gable, hit men extraordinaire, who are in Ellas downstairs neighbors apt when Ella comes barging in demanding her pen! Their job is done but there is smtg about Ella that had Asher take notice. Gable cant stand the lil firecracker and wants her gone. however their job isnt done yet....they get a notice that Ella is the next target. Asher needs to protect Ella. but when other hitmen come for Ella while Gable grumbles. all bets are off. things are not what they seem and Ellas life is going to get even more complicated. what's the worst thing that can happen?

Drama, deceit, OMG moments and wanting to throat punch a few characters makes this a great read. It keeps you sitting on the edge of your chair anticipating what happens next.

Catch feelings - Survive chapter 21

First time reading this author, loved, LOVED, L.O.V.E.D. the book!
I highlighted quotes, SO MANY quotes, the writing was just that *chef's kiss*.

But chapter 21 nearly broke me... 💔

Kayla Kyng, I salute you! 🫡
It’s been a while since I got emotional over a plot twist.
Well done ma’am, well done… 👏

Also: the word fuck is mentioned 470 times 😏

My favorite quotes:
My dad's been lonely since divorcing my stepmom (ding-dong, that witch is dead), and he doesn't like me living in the city.

"Sundays are supposed to be peaceful." She raises her hands to the sky. "It's God's day. Why is the Devil following me?"

Her back is now almost completely against my chest, and so is her body heat, and I wish I'd spooned the dog instead.

I. Hate. Her. And now the last of my Oreos are gone. Fuck this. I slam the cabinet door closed. "Gibson, you die today!"

What it is about:
Ella, a sassy and accident‑prone author, stumbles into the aftermath of her neighbor’s murder - committed by brothers Asher and Gable, professional hitmen who now see her as a loose end. Asher falls head over heels for her and questions her guilt, while Gable insists the safest option is killing her. When rival assassins close in, the brothers must choose between saving Ella or saving themselves.

What I loved:
📝the dedication "To the readers who resonate with this: "Fuck me like you hate me. Love me like you'll die with me."
✒️she is a writer and it all starts with her losing her pen, THE pen
🙃her little quirks
✅the MMCs are in their thirties
📚he builds her a bookshelf
🎄that they agree that Die Hard is a Christmas movie!
🥵the "fuck it" scene
🔥the writing, oh my god, the writing *DELISH*

What I struggled with:
🙂‍↔️A.B.S.O.-F.U.C.K.I.N.G.-L.U.T.E.L.Y. N.O.T.H.I.N.G.

Saving Ella is a standalone within the Luxe Universe, blending romantic suspense with dark undertones, humour, heat, and emotional gut-punches — all told through multiple POVs.

Ella is a brilliantly funny, small-time author who just happens to be the Chief of Police’s daughter. She’s sharp, warm, and refreshingly real — the kind of FMC who makes you laugh out loud one minute and ache for her the next.

Asher and Gable are brothers in everything but blood. Survivors of the foster system, bonded by trauma and loyalty, they now work as contract killers. They’re hired to eliminate Ella’s downstairs neighbour… and Ella herself.

It should have been a straightforward double job, but then one of them sees her — really sees her — and hands over his heart without hesitation.

From that moment on, the mission is no longer simple. Lines blur. Loyalties shift. Instinct battles emotion. And what begins as a job spirals into something far more dangerous and deeply personal.

Kayla Kyng takes readers on a rollercoaster of peaks and valleys, racing pulses and sucker punches of emotion. The suspense is tightly woven, the chemistry intense, and the angst hits hard. I genuinely felt the full A–Z of emotions while reading this — tension, fear, laughter, longing, heartbreak, hope.

The dynamic between the brothers adds an extra layer of complexity, and the moral conflict running beneath the romance keeps the stakes high throughout.

And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Gable’s dog, Motor — who completely stole my heart and provided some of the most grounding moments in the story.

Saving Ella is passionate, suspenseful, and emotionally layered. If you enjoy romantic suspense with morally grey MMCs, found-family bonds, and high emotional stakes, this one is worth the ride.

A huge thank you to Kayla Kyng and Ever After PR for the early copy.

All opinions are my own.

I picked this up expecting chaos, banter, and danger… and ended up getting a full emotional rollercoaster. We meet Ella, an author who accidentally crashes into a world she definitely didn’t sign up for… and enter Asher & Gable, two morally grey men with very different vibes but equally dangerous energy.

Ella is the kind of FMC you can’t help but root for, witty, stubborn, creative, and way stronger than she realizes. And Asher and Gable, the contrast between them is chef’s kiss. The tension, the banter, the protective energy, the moral grayness… it all just works. What I loved most is how this story balances sharp humour with genuine suspense. Every time I thought I had the plot figured out, it said nope and pulled me right back in.

💫 Expect:
💥 edge-of-your-seat suspense
🔥 chemistry that simmers then explodes
🖤 found-family feels hidden inside the chaos
😱 moments that made me gasp out loud

If you love dark romance with tension, layered characters, and a plot that keeps escalating, add this one to your TBR immediately. I'm excited to read more books by Kayla Kyng.

Many thanks to Ever After PR and the author for the ARC.

I'm absolutely speechless. This was such a wild ride. Totally wasn't what I anticipated going in, but in the absolute best way!
The writing style was phenomenal and really drew me in. I laughed. I cried. I wiggled my feet gleefully. I had my heart broken. And fixed. And broken again.

The book simply is a masterpiece and I would give it 10 stars if I could.
This will be one of the few books I'll truly remember every line for a long time if not forever.

Thankyou to Kayla for letting me be a part of her ARC team. My goodness I absolutely loved this book, I also love that she’s a writer I’ve never read a book before where the main character has this hobby. Also Gable I love his how hot headed he is. This book took me on a rollercoaster but a great one definitely recommend if you love a good enemies to lovers and next door neighbour trope.

❤️ World Building: The world building in this was so well done! This is going to be a series of stand alone novels in the same world, so having a good foundation is important, and this has a great foundation!

❤️ The Characters: I really like Ella, she was likable and just adorable, yet strong in that silent way that a lot of women are familiar with. Asher, oh sweet, Asher, he was wonderful to read about. So sweet, always nice, everyone likes him - your total guy next door! Gable was dark and angry, and I loved him for his darkness. He was unapologetic and I was there for it!

❤️ The Story: The story was really really good! It had betrayals, bribes, intrigue, and all the things that make a good story good. I cried, I laughed, and I loved right beside Ella. I also really loved the relationship between Ella and her father, Guy. It’s what I imagine a good father/parent should be, always putting your child first.

❤️‍🔥Overall: This was well worth the read! I’m excited to read more of Kayla King’s books now, and I highly recommend checking this book out!

🌺Orchid Fact Inspired by the flowers in the book: There are around 28,000 known species of orchid. This makes the orchid family second only to the daisy family, Asteraceae, in number of known species. It is thought that there could be many rainforest species yet to be discovered.

Orchids are also highly promiscuous, readily hybridising with each other to create novel plants. Though there are 28,000 accepted species, there are a further 192,000 different hybrids listed in the International Orchid Register

OMG! This book WRECKED ME! Then today in my email I get a bonus scene that wrecked me even more! Eeeeek! Girl. Like GIRRRRRRL. Girl. This is definitely a reread times 100! Holy hell. Okay, as for the book itself, it is violent, messy, and magnetic in the best possible ways! Exactly the kind of ruin your life romance I live for! Ella is peak chaotic heroine! She fights back, fakes her own death, and somehow makes surviving feel like seduction. The Flynn brothers are absolute disaster men and I am HERE for it 💯! Asher’s desperate, obsessed tenderness will shred you, and Gable? That gruff, savage soft on the inside monster actually gets the girl and I am not okay! The betrayals land like gut punches, the stakes never let up, and Kyng writes violence and loyalty with teeth. This is dark, angsty, reread-core chaos with scenes that make you cry and then cuss for an hour. As for the bonus scene? Yes, a filthy brain melt cherry on top that’s peak fantasy chaos. If you want morally ruined men, brutal angst, and unhinged devotion, drop everything and read this! I’ll be rereading until my brain rots and I don’t regret a single second!

If he can’t carry me with one arm, I don’t want him. Luckily, Gable can carry Ella bridal style in Kayla Kyng’s newest Luxe Universe book, Saving Ella ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I have always been down bad for the bodyguard type, and a reluctant grumpy bodyguard is even better 😏

The angst and tension adds fuel to the slow burn 🔥 Gable and Ella get off on the wrong foot, and Ella gets along better with Gable’s foster brother, Asher, the golden retriever. The brothers are hired to kill Ella...but Asher falls head over heels for the target 🎯

This forbidden romance has one of the best “F*CK IT” moments. I live for Gable’s overprotectiveness and his touch her and die demeanor. This man secretly protects Ella for six months, removing 27 assassins 🗡️

Kayla made me 😭 when it got closer to the end, but don’t worry, the happily ever after is a guarantee! You’ll just have to survive the plot twist and the tears first. I may or may not have highlighted the whole book 🙆🏻‍♀️

Gable, a true romantic at heart, will have you falling for him in Saving Ella:
“I love you,” he whispers.
I smile into the dark.
“But do you wish for me?”
His soft laugh warms me, and his answer does, too. “Every damn day.”

Thank you, Ever After PR and Kayla, for my digital ARC in exchange for an honest review!

3.5 I read all this authors other books and really liked those. This one has a totally different tone. The actual mmc has the big epiphany of why he acted the way he did in chapter 34 but it wasn’t successful to me as there was already the scene with Monty earlier on who is the fmc of next book so ick. Then he told her he needed to get laid before they left on top of all that his internal thoughts until a few chapters before this are not positive about the fmc. So it just wasn’t successful to rewrite history in a sense about his falling love the whole time with even Asher realizing it. I mean he was easily leaving without a backwards thought before what happened to Asher so yeah rewriting history.

It was a missed opportunity to not have the intimacy develop more organically while at the cabin. Dang this was a slowwww burn.

Now the last part of the book all the “action” happens and that part of the love story is so much better. I should have not been surprised with who the betrayal would be from but glad I didn’t guess this time. Again I do wish we got more background as to why but it was surface level so I’ll accept it.

I can always tell which characters an author likes more than others. In the trilogy it was Ranger lol in this book Monty got to outshine Ella. And I just wish we didn’t have that scene with her and Gable especially when it seems her and Ella are going to friend-ish especially with Monty and Ray getting together in the next book. I mean she had Ella literally smell Monty pussy on his fingers which was the ick I couldn’t get over.

I was really hoping this would be a why choose

This ARC was such a big surprise for me.
I applied impulsively after seing a prompt about it. Give me brothers, a girl and two completely different opinions on whether to like her or not and I'm game.

This book has made me laugh but also cry.
Kayla says she likes high stakes and it absolutely shows, because noone is safe and noone strays from their convictions, which I absolutely love. If there's one thing to be said about the characters in this book then it's that they stay true to themselves to the T.

I look forward to basically reading everything she writes from now on.

This was my first time reading Kayla Kyng, and I enjoyed it overall. The beginning hooked me, especially Ella’s connection with Asher early on and the tension that followed with Gable. I really liked how the story started with a strong emotional pull.

The middle did slow down for me a bit, but once everything started to click, the story became really interesting again. I loved how Ella and Gable’s relationship developed from dislike to love, and the conclusion was very satisfying. The characters were a highlight overall, and Monty especially caught my attention. I’d definitely be interested in reading her story.

Oh so you want to write a book…. Thats engaging, spicy, twisting, emotional, shocking, full of yearning and heart ache?! THIS👏 IS 👏HOW 👏YOU 👏DO 👏IT 👏

This was INSANELY good. Every plot point every element of the story line was so perfectly balanced, I didn’t get fed up i didn’t get bored, nothing was over done, IT WAS PACED PERFECTLY.

I love nothing more than a bit of a plot climb when I’m reading, nothing too steep but enough that I want to keep going keep going and then suddenly Im pushed over the edge everything’s happening, the twists are all over the place, Im losing my mind, it’s 10/10.

Favourite read of the year happening in March? Can’t see anything beating this frankly.

Go and read it and I’m going to go read everything else Kayla has written ok deal good. 🖤

I received this book as an ARC and now Kayla Kyng is an auto-buy author. Like it was THAT GOOD. This story has EVERYTHING you need in a good one; action, plot twists that got me flabbergasted, love, spicy sex, hot killer brothers, side characters you love as much as the main characters, grief and a lot of trigger warnings 😎

I don't think I've ever highlighted so many sentences in an ARC before. The only reason I didn't read this faster is because life got way too much in the way, but at the same time, I wanted more and could've kept reading forever. Lucky for me, there's a whole trilogy in this world that Kayla already wrote and a lot of books planned 😍

On the second page, you get to read a few spoiler free of my favorite quotes 👀❤️

Kayla Kyng, you'll see my profile popping for all your upcoming ARC releases and I'm definitely getting some trophy books 🏆

This book is chaotic, funny, and emotionally unpredictable in the best way. Ella is a witty, headstrong protagonist you can’t help but root for, and the contrast between Asher and Gable makes for a dynamic that crackles throughout.

The middle loses some steam, and there were moments I nearly put it down, but pushing through is worth it. The ending ties everything together beautifully and left me genuinely satisfied.

Full of sharp banter, moral greyness, and twists I didn’t see coming, this is a quick read that delivers. If you’ve read the connected trilogy, I imagine it hits even harder.
Messy, charismatic, and thoroughly entertaining — rough edges and all.

Asher, Gable, Ella, Guy, Monty are fantastic characters. I can’t get enough!

Barnaby- what a freaking creep. I can’t decide if I’m mad or happy that he got them into this mess!

This book!!! I loved every damn minute of it and simply want more.

More banter, more tension, more comedic relief. More Ella and the Flynn brothers.

The way this book burrowed into my heart and soul and stayed put. It was better than my imagination!

Kayla once again immersed me in a world I did not want to leave with characters that pulled out a wide range of emotions in me. I can’t say much without major spoilers, but let’s just say I felt it all. Laughter, tears, heartbreaking devastation, redemption, healing, revenge, betrayal, and so much love between Asher, Gable, and Ella!

The ties ins with the Denver Trilogy were pure gold, especially since we already know how that story ends! Add in a cast of side characters that I’m desperate to know more about (I’m talking about you Monty, Guy, and Mr. Passenger Prince himself!), and it’s official, I never want to leave the Luxe Universe.

Saving Ella was everything I wished for, and so much more. If you love multi- POV, romantic suspense filled with all the angst, banter, tension and spice you could crave, then this book is for you!!!

Title: Saving Ella (The Luxe Universe: Book 4) - ARC
Author: Kayla Kyng

Review: This novel is part of the Luxe Universe (book 4), and while it’s recommended you read the Denver Trilogy first, it isn’t required to understand the story, as this is a standalone.

This is the first book I’ve read by author Kayla Kyng, and I’m pretty sure it’s just made my top 5 for the year! This book was everything I didn’t know I needed or wanted.

I was one of the lucky ones to receive this amazing ARC, and I was all in baby, from the very first chapter.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it became very clear that I was absolutely hooked. I devoured this book in a day, and I’m still thinking about it.

Right off the bat we meet Ella Gibson. A young author who lives alone, doesn’t have many friends, is introverted but has an amazing personality, quick wit and a touch of sass to go with it.

Queue assassins, Asher and Gable Flynn. Total opposites but brothers nonetheless.
Asher Flynn has his good looks, charm, wit but is also kind, caring and a gentleman. No wonder Ella falls for him pretty quickly, what’s not to love…
Gable Flynn is sexy, broody, quick-witted and can only stand two people in his life, Asher and his adoptive father, Hunter DeLuca.
Gable and Ella have a love/hate relationship, focusing more on the dislike side. They constantly bicker and throw insults every chance they get.

After Ella stumbles upon Gable and Asher, she unknowingly inserts herself right into the lion’s den. With a bounty on her head, she’s just made the brother’s lives easy to eliminate their target. But after spending just a few minutes with Ella, Asher falls instantly, and there’s no way he can go through with the hit.

Asher convinces Gable to stick around for a while until they find the missing hard drive, but as the days pass, it becomes clear that Asher is in love with Ella and wants to protect her instead. Gable tries to change Asher’s mind, but he can see how happy she makes him. Gable would do anything for Asher, so he agrees to help keep her safe and find out who put the hit on her and why.

This book has so many twists and turns you didn’t know what was coming next. And let me tell you, I ugly cried so hard at 2am (Chapter 20 & 21, IYKYK!) Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, IT DID! You broke my heart, Kayla Kyng and I’m still mad about it.

So much heartache but a second chance at love, and boy oh boy did you bring it back. Reading Ella struggle for over six months, stuck in limbo and not really having a purpose was hard to read. But the whole time, (THE WHOLE TIME) her second chance was hiding in the shadows, keeping her safe until the time was right.

With so many questions, secrets, lies and loss, it’s hard for the group to come back together. But in the end, Love prevails, and Ella gets her HEA.

I loved all the characters in this book, even Monty (can’t wait to read her book). This book really did have it all, and it delivered. What a rollercoaster of a ride! The conclusion was wrapped up nicely, and even though I did feel like the main characters came across a little juvenile at times, I still loved every minute of it.

“I walk by the characters I don’t know yet, but it isn’t them I’m looking for.
I’m looking for him. It feels so real, seeing him standing there. He smiles, and my heart does all the things it always did around him. Too fast. Too slow. Just right.
He pulls me close and I swear I can feel him. I can smell him. Feel the warmth of his chest, his arms around me, the kiss he places on my head.
I squeeze my eyes closed, holding onto him for as long as I can, because I know the moment I speak, the dream will end, and he’ll be gone.”

“I love her, even though I shouldn’t. I need her, even though it might not work. I’ll keep her, even though she deserves more. The moment is everything. It’s a rush I thought I could never feel, a kind of hope I’ve only ever experienced as a kid dreaming of more. Anything feels possible. Everything feels possible. With her.
“You really love me?” She sobs out the words.
“I don’t just love you, Gibson. I wish for you.”

“There is nothing in this world more important than her. Nothing I wouldn’t do to keep Ella safe and happy, because she may be twenty-five, but to me she’ll always be that little girl who ran to me with scraped knees and broken hearts.
I’ll do anything and everything for her.”
