Great for fixing past mistakes, but a bit light on the future
I wish someone had sat me down twenty years ago and explained half the things in this book before I learned them the hard way. As a father watching my own teenagers get ready to face the real world, I appreciate that this guide focuses on fixing past mistakes rather than just scaring you about them. The sections on repairing credit and having tough money talks are actually very practical for anyone trying to get back on their feet without feeling judged. I decided on four stars because while it is great for getting out of a hole, I found myself wanting a bit more depth on the long term investing side of things since I am looking at retirement sooner than I would like to admit. It is a solid roadmap for beginners or restarts, just do not expect it to replace a dedicated financial planner for the big picture stuff.
I generally don't read personal finance books, last one i read was I ll teach you to be rich by Ramit, but adulting your money felt very close to real life for me. The author knows how it feels when salary comes, bills eat everything, and you feel stupid for not “knowing money” by now. I liked how the book is built as 10 small steps. The scripts for salary negotiation and awkward money talks were gold. The idea of starting investing with very small amounts also made it feel doable, not scary. As an Indian reader, some things are very American 401(k), credit scores, insurance names, certain apps. You have to mentally convert it to EPF, mutual funds, Rupees, etc. Also, if you already know basics of investing, you may find that part a bit light. but that is also the case with Ramit's book. Still, for someone who has made mistakes and feels behind, this book is kind, practical, and gives you a proper plan instead of just guilt.
It is a good start if readers have no experience in investing and personal money management. Book walks you through those basics and helps you understand terms and actions. This can be your starting point to learn something extra in personal finance. You might want to explore more after reading this book because knowing how money works you can completely change your life.
