This is a really sweet, homespun story about a mama and baby piping plover, appropriately enough—written & illustrated by a mother-and-daughter team. I love that! Pip the Plover and the Dune Grass Path is a perfect shore-house read, especially if you live or vacation near beaches where sections are roped off to protect nesting birds. It’s a lovely way to show children why it’s important that we all share the shore—and, come to think of it, the entire planet—with the many other creatures who call Earth home too.

It may not be the sleekest children’s book production you’ll ever see, but therein lies much of its charm. It feels like a genuine labor of love from its creators, with plenty of additional resources in the back for curious kids and grown-ups. By the end, everyone can become an expert on the piping plover protection campaign and understand why these tiny shorebirds deserve a little beach real estate of their own alongside us shoobies. Sweet, earnest, educational—a perfect boardwalk bookstore purchase.

Protecting the plovers

This book is wonderful for children as well as adults. I had no idea what the name of the birds on the beach were called and this book did a freer job of informing me on how to care for them while at the beach.

The book or self had great visuals of the birds and painted a nice scenery at the beach. I also appreciate the author depicting the children being kind to the Plovers environment. I find that some kids can be cruel and being empathic to another environment is a good lesson in learning.

The book was very easy to read and straight to the point and I loved that she drew inspiration from her real family’s beach cottage.

This is a beautifully illustrated piece of natural fiction. I thought the message was clear and good. I also thought the illustrations were beautiful. I just wanted both a little hmph to the story (it was a little bland in the telling) and a little color to the illustrations (I think the sea of beige in the illustrations hurt the appeal and hide the beauty of the subject). This could reach a larger audience with just a little bit more contrast and style.

“Pip the Plover” is an excellent story to make our little ones aware of environmental protection. The book is also well crafted, featuring great artwork. Thank you to NetGalley and Kate Powers Publishing | Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Members' Titles for the e-ARC of this title to read and review. I am already very interested in plovers and live near areas that occasionally shut down sections of the beach to accommodate their nesting and hatching cycles. This book explains that process really well, and introduces the sweet birds to young readers who may not have heard about them. It's a cute story about a nest hatching too, with some poetic flow to the beauty of the process.

The book's back matter, featuring real photographs of plovers and more in-depth scientific info + ways for kids to get involved, is really wonderful. It allows you to learn more if you're interested and find even more info about plovers, and contextualizes why they are important to our ecosystem.

For the illustrations: I was delighted to learn that they are done by the author's daughter. The illustrations of the birds are SO impressive and detailed, all of the rest are less detailed: but it keeps the focus on the plovers!

Powers did an excellent job using the English language to describe this story in fantastic detail! From building suspense (just wait until you get to the feet pounding!), to the onomatopoeia, and finally Pip's birth! And that's just on page 2. From there, Powers brings in every sense to help readers fall right into the moment, feeling like we're right there with Pip and he learns to co-exist (and obey his mama) in this big, scary world.

While the illustrations are great (wooo Abigail!), the real pictures and explanation at the end of the book were even better if possible. It is incredible to read and see their habitat and the protection humans give these tiny, adorable creatures. My kids loved learning how to be a beach hero and are already brainstorming how those principles can be applied in other ecosystems!

Pip the Plover and the Dune Grass Path is beautifully reminds young readers the importance of conservation, and the importance of protecting local wildlife. I love everything about this book! There is cozy storytelling of the beach and it's inhabitants, as well as real pictures and facts about Piping Plovers, which can lead to fruitful conversations about being mindful of our local environments. The illustrations are so wonderfully done, I was so pleased to read that the illustrator and author are a mother and daughter team.

A wonderful book about conservation! I have a soft spot for Piping Plovers after doing field studies on them with the Massachusetts Audubon. I loved how this story demonstrated what kids should do and say if they see anyone getting too close to the fenced areas. Many people don't know what they're for or choose to ignore the signs. Hopefully increased awareness through books like this one will change that. The illustrations are adorable, and I love that the author and illustrator are a mother daughter team. This book is a perfect read-aloud for nature camps, field trips, and science classes!

This story is cute---I love Pip. The illustrations fit the story very well.

I think this is a very good story to read to kids before you go to the beach or even after you go to the beach if your kid had questions about any signs or blocked off areas. It's good to help make people conscientious about birds like Pip living in delicate areas that shouldn't be trampled on. This is a good lesson.

Pip the Plover by Kate Powers is such a soothing children’s book. The visuals are calm and not too distracting, which makes the story feel very gentle and focused. I loved how the people visually contrast with nature and Pip the bird, making the environment feel like the real heart of the book.

I also absolutely loved the ending, where Pip’s cousins are shown in real life. That little detail made the book feel even more meaningful and educational.
The message is beautiful: we must preserve nature.

This is such a cute book. The illustrations are adorable, and the message is great. I think this is a great book to read to a child before you take them to the beach to explain the roped-off areas. It reminded me a lot of the Disney animated short Piper, so if you loved that, you should read this book (or vice-versa)!

I read this book with my 3 year old granddaughter to give the book a fair review.

I thought the artwork was visually beautiful.

The story was not enough to grab mine or my granddaughter's attention. I loved the reason behind the book, and highlighting it for others, however it did not hold our attention.

I would have liked the pages to have busier designs so there is more to point out to toddlers - but like I said, they were very beautiful without.

Adorably sweet Children's Book that I would love to have a copy for my Little Free Library. As we live on the Nature Coast of Florida, this is a great book to teach children how to enjoy nature while respecting the local wildlife. The illustrations are cute, the story sweet and educational and the resources at the end add real value.

This was very cute! I appreciate the simple, yet heart-felt, story, charming illustrations, and the soothing color scheme. This is an adorable book with a great message (and behavior modeling!) for children. While I like the muted colors and think they are realistic and calming, I do think that a bit more color would be more visually engaging for younger children.
