The mystery and suspense kept me listening from start to finish. The biggest struggle for me was the mother's voice. I understand the character had suffered a stroke, but she sounded so robotic that I kept wondering if I'd missed an explanation for why she seemed to be speaking through a computer-generated device.The narrator did amazing on all the other character voices.
Thankfully, the twists, family secrets, and investigation kept me invested enough to push through. A solid mystery thriller with plenty of suspense and revelations along the way. If you enjoyed, " Listen for the Lie" or "Local Woman Missing" you'll enjoy this read.

Messy, chaotic, dangerous- and that's just the first part! This novel has so many elements that it is juggling, it's almost a three ring circus in itself. While I love the chaos and Dani, I found myself wanting to yell at her a lot. Dani is spiralling after being found out undercover and takes on a whole PI case while still working undercover- but in secret. I loved her, but I wanted to throttle her sometimes too. I hope the author continues this into a series because I need to know what category of hurricane Dani evolves into.

Marketing Danny Boyd as the next Lisbeth Salander feels incredibly forced. While both are investigative heroines, Against Their Will lacks the raw adrenaline and gritty, visceral combat that defined The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Instead, the novel drags through its first half, prioritizing the domestic drama and slow character building of the Wilson siblings over real momentum. By the time the physical altercations do happen, they feel too understated to salvage the book's sluggish pacing.

I liked this and would read more if this became a series. Terrific narrator. I wasn’t surprised by any of the reveals but think others might be.
I read this while doing chores and it passed the time. There are two stories and I’m not sure why the second was needed. I also found myself interested in two other stories that happened at the beginning but went nowhere. I wanted to stay with those stories. Instead I ended up with a family drama which was fine but not nearly as interesting or enticing

Book also opens with a guy waking up in a woman’s bed. He thinks she’s passed out and goes to leave. Later finds out she died when the police come knocking. He turns out to be one of the children of the dead guy (his sister calls while the police are there to tell him he’s died).
I wanted to know what happened to the little kid and I also wanted more on the dead lady story but they were both dropped like a sack of potatoes.
The bulk of the story is the MC investigating, doing her hobby, and finding out the family secrets including who/why rich daddy was killed.

This thriller was so good! I was sucked in after the first several chapters and the suspense kept me captivated. At the end I felt anxiety like I was right next to the character Danny. I will highly recommend this book to my book club when it’s released.

Danny Boyd is supposed to be laying low after blowing her cover with this terrifying syndicate, Kronos. Instead, she’s like, I will simply not do that, and takes on a PI case involving a dead real estate mogul and a family that has more secrets than emotional stability. The will drops, the hidden son shows up, everyone starts acting suspicious, and Danny decides this is the perfect time to also keep chasing a global crime network. Multitasking queen, but at what cost.
The first chunk is very much rich family drama simmering at a polite boil, and I won’t lie, I was waiting for someone to flip a table. But the second Danny steps in, the whole thing tightens up and suddenly it’s stress city. The tension ramps, people start watching her, and you get that creeping feeling that she is in way over her head and also refuses to acknowledge that as a concept.
Danny is one of those characters where you’re rooting for her while also wanting to gently take her by the shoulders and say, stop doing reckless spy-adjacent nonsense on unsecured phone lines. She’s smart, driven, deeply stubborn, and completely unwilling to let the trafficking case go, which is admirable and also the reason her life is constantly on fire.
The Wilson family is exactly as messy as you want them to be. Money, betrayal, buried secrets, everyone acting like they’re in a different version of the same story. Some of it leans a little dramatic, but the dysfunction hits because nobody is handling anything well and the tension just keeps stacking.

3.5 ⭐️ this book was entertaining but left some loose threads and was a bit more convoluted (storyline-wise, not twist-wise) than I would’ve liked. There are multiple storylines—Dani undercover and investigating child trafficking (even after being told to stand down), Dani investigating the details surrounding the death and inheritance after a wealthy man dies, and then also someone stalking / tailing / following / investigating Dani?? It was a lot. I think this book would’ve been stronger with fewer storylines, but I was intrigued by the story nonetheless. I just would’ve liked MORE detail one one or two facets of it (especially her time as a journalist or more detail about her work with The Open / more backstory on how all that came about). I would LOVE more stories from this author with this main character or other characters in similar roles with The Open. There are secret children, family secrets, a disputed will, rich people who don’t like to share, and maybe an ordered execution rather than an accident??? Who can know for sure 👀👀
🎧 The narrator Saskia Maarleveld absolutely NAILED it with this narration.. the fact that all of those voices were done by one person rather than with duet or multicast narration blew my mind, as I absolutely assumed it was at least 2 narrators prior to looking it up. My only complaint is that the mom/matriarch’s voice was super robotic and I don’t think we ever got an explanation on WHY she seemed to be speaking through some sort of device or something? I assume this was intentional as there was a comment made that acknowledged her sounding different when she speaks/someone being surprised by it when she opened her mouth which was a somewhat rare occurrence, but her voice definitely took me out of the story in the brief times when she spoke. Otherwise, though, the narration was great imo.

Against Their Will grabbed my attention right from the start. The undercover child trafficking investigation created immediate tension and gave the story a strong, compelling opening. The stakes felt high, and I was quickly invested in seeing how the case would unfold.
One of the highlights for me was Danny. I found her investigative work and PI skills especially interesting, and honestly, I'd be excited to read more stories centered around her and her cases. She brought a level of determination and expertise that kept me engaged whenever she was on the page.

I read this book because they said it was like the work of Stieg Larsson would write. Not quite. Things seemed to be a little more complicated in Stieg's writing, but I can see when Danny gave her findings to the Wilson's it had bit of Stieg's influence. It was to like a detective novel and not a journalistic process to get the bad guys. It was simpler answer to finding out what happened to her characters. Stieg played with his characters much more and included a lot of research into it and at the same time he involved each person with what had become their personality's. I was willing to read much more than I did in this case. But back to the book, it had a nice rhythm and it would become interesting as it came to a fruition but not like Stieg's.

For the first 100 or so pages, the reader is waiting for the two completely separate stories to come together - one of which this reader felt was completely boring and the other involving the family dynamics in connection with the will of the deceased father was fascinating. With the assistance of his attorney, the father has continued to control his family through the terms of the will. As secrets are revealed, the reader will be astonished as to how one family can be so screwed up. If one can ignore the other theme of the story, the reader is in for an unexpected and enjoyable experience. I thank NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this novel prior to its publication.

A solid thriller with a dark edge—worth picking up if you enjoy suspenseful reads

This felt like a wild mix of thrillers thrown together to see what sticks (an unknown heir with a claim to the uber wealthy family business/estate proceeds, murder, sex trafficking, family drama). It was a lot.

A slow-burn thriller that had me engrossed until the final reveal. Danny was an interesting character. Though at times she was so frustrating with her inability to focus on her main assignment, putting herself and her colleagues at risk over the child trafficking case. Yet I understood why she was determined. It took a while for me to get invested in the Wilson family machinations. I wonder if it would've been stronger removing their chapters and just seeing Danny investigating them, as I really didn't care about them. Also I'm confused about Josh's mercury ball - it was never really explained and came off as science fiction.

Decent story and enjoyed the deception unfolding of the Wilson family. The orphanage farms portion muddled the plot of the story and the book likely would have been better without it.

Wasn't sure I would like this book, but it grew on me and near the end had a lot of twists and turns to make the book very enjoyable.

Thought it was pretty good. Will look forward to sequel (there will have to be one as trafficking network is still out there and after Danny), and any other subsequent books.

I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway. I thought it was a great thriller - so much going on but yet easy to follow. Recommend!

Really 3 1/2. Beginning was too slow. The last 100 pages were great.
