Grimtome - Quest of the Book Goblin

Rate this book
Grimtome was a Book Goblin for the Followers of the Black Flame, the arcane hand of the Brotherhood of Shadow, until a wish made by his master and fulfilled by a genie with a sick sense of humor, altered him forever. Now, self-aware to the point that he knows that he is in a story, Grimtome sets off on a mission to become a hero if he wishes to escape the book he is in. Being granted a magic device that will allow him to tunnel into other storybooks, Grimtome sets off to infiltrate fairytales to steal the items he needs to complete his quest.

Aware of the reader who he conveniently calls Bob, Grimtome ravages one fictional world after another, while giving his take on the folly of the individuals that the fairy tales are about, and how everyone in them...deserves exactly what they get.

As Bob, follow Grimtome as he tears apart your favorite fairy tales in this dark fantasy where nothing is safe and little is sacred, all the while narrating his own origin story as the only self-aware, foul-mouthed hilarious Book Goblin that he is can.

I don’t even know where to begin. Grimtome is unlike anything I’ve ever read. It’s chaotic, clever, and heartbreakingly human, all wrapped inside the mind of a self-aware book goblin who breaks every rule of storytelling while somehow teaching you more about life than a dozen philosophy classes could.

Will Grey doesn’t just write a story. He summons one. Every page feels alive. Grimtome isn’t a character; he’s an experience. He talks to you, argues with you, and makes you question what’s real, what’s written, and what it means to exist when your story is being told by someone else. I laughed until I cried. Then I cried for real. The humor is razor-sharp, the heart is devastating, and the way Grey weaves myth, fable, and self-awareness together is nothing short of genius. This isn’t just a book; it’s a mirror that smirks back at you and dares you to look deeper. There’s something alive in these pages, something that laughs and bleeds and thinks beside you. It’s rare for a story to mirror your soul and mock it at the same time, but Grimtome manages both, and makes you grateful for it.Grimtome - Quest of the Book Goblin

Grimtome is the surprisingly endearing story about a book goblin who gains sentience and his quest to become a hero and escape his fictional world. Grimtome invades many beloved stories and fairytales on his adventure, providing thoughtful commentary on these stories while providing a fresh twist and perspective on each tale. While it is thoughtful, this book is also hilarious. The way Grimtome breaks the fourth wall, and his relationship with Bob (what he calls the reader of his story) provides many laughs, but it is also genuinely heartfelt. I found myself rooting for Grimtome and getting emotionally attached to his quest more than I expected to. It is a quick read, so pick it up if you are in the mood to think, laugh, and maybe cry. I can't recommend it enough.

This book slapped me in the face—and I liked it.
Imagine if a goblin broke into your favorite fairytales, stole the plot-critical objects, mocked the protagonists, and then narrated the whole thing with the sass of a caffeinated Deadpool. That’s Grimtome. Our narrator isn’t here to be wholesome. He’s here to steal your sacred relics, roast your childhood nostalgia, and wink at you while doing it. The fourth wall? Obliterated. The banter? Sharper than grandma’s cursed knitting needles. It’s clever, chaotic, and weirdly heartfelt beneath all the snark. I enjoyed it and am concerned he’s coming to my book next!

Grimtome transports into our most well-known stories and fairy tales, searching for magical items as he quests for his own freedom. This book is funny, irreverent, and clever. Imagine a character with the mouth and mind of Deadpool, fairy tales turned sideways like in the comic book Fables, and add a dash of adventurous artifact collecting from Warehouse 13. On the surface, this could be the tale of a foul-mouthed, villainous character, but the book has a lot of heart and soul, helping one understand that we are all the writers of our own stories and none of our paths are mapped out for us.

Grimtome is funny, witty and an amazing adventure. This book had me laughing hysterically, scratching my head and even learned some new stuff about fairy tales I grew up with. Will is a phenomenal writer that keeps you engaged from the very beginning all the way to the end.
